Review from Candice G.
Naperville, IL
I was famished. We were desperate. They were near enough that I didn't have to gnaw off any appendages (don't be dirty) to soothe the hunger pangs.
Simple sentence structure style for now. Too busy dreaming of more Adriana's to stress the mind.
It was a gamble. It was kind of a dive. They had very few veggie options that looked like they would satisfy. We were already there, and like I said, I was ready to gnaw the crap out of something, anything really.
My partner and I split a veggie pizza and the Sunny's Veggie sub.
Synopsis.
The pizza cheese was somewhat strange, but good in a way I can't describe. I could've eaten 2 myself.
The sub, made with hot garlic bread and topped with mozzarella and parmesan cheeses, lettuce, tomato, onion, green pepper, artichoke hearts, and pesto dressing, was giant. We were regretting ordering both a little pizza and the sub since the sub looked like more than enough for 2 people... until we tried it. It was the single most delicious hot veggie sub I have ever eaten in my entire life. I could've eaten 3 of them myself... if they weren't so messy and the oil dripping out didn't make me feel like such gross-o glutton. I would drive back to St. Louis just for this sub. If you like Italian subs the way your momma used to make 'em, this is THE place for you.
Service was friendly and appeared to be family owned and operated, less the community college kids that help in back- who were also sweet peaches. They're open 6 days a week, but only for 4.5 hours each day- so get 'em while you can. I recommend a stop in there before or after your botanical gardens visit since it's so close by.
If I had to pick something to gripe about, it'd be the teeny tiny water cups (not conducive to eating salty Italian subs and pizza) and the lack of napkins given. That sub might have been the messiest non-sloppy joe sandwich I've ever eaten and anything short of a beach towel was defo not going to tide me over. I basically took a shower in their sink when I was done and still felt oil & vinegar-y... but it was worth it times a trillion.
For sure, one of my top 5 picks for St. Louis eats. -

Delicious Italian subs in a classic location on the Hill.
The Spicy Mambliano was delicious with phenomenal bread and great deli meats that were just so good. Their sides and salads are quite good as well, and they have a great selection of sandwiches. The service is fast and the prices are reasonable. This is definitely one of my favorite places to get a sandwich in the city. -

I stopped here for my first meal back in the States, following a food and wine-centric trip to Argentina (you must go there!) Sandwiches don't usually fire me up, but a friend suggested this was a def. place to go. I wasn't prepared to be so impressed ;)
DH and I love, love, loved this place. I was a little intimidated at first; there was a large, experienced crowd there, and I feared a Soup Nazi ordering experience. Al contrario! The lady who took our order was so sweet, kind, and patient---which makes me want to return all the more.
We split Joe's special and had the spinach/mushroom soup (counter lady said it's her favorite.) I'd have this sandwich again, except for the fact that there are about 15 other things I feel the need to try.
Magnifico! -

AWESOME everything!!!! I have been there a number of times, trying different items each time and all where delicious!!!! Family owned and operated. The Joe's special is to die for!!! The side salad and the mushroom salad type thing are great.
I would recommend this to everyone. -

We stumbled on this wonderful gem one afternoon after going to the Botanical Gardens. We knew it must be special based on the line out to the door. We ordered a salad and sandwich and were blown away!

One of the best salad and 'half' sandwich combos I've ever had. I got the Hill Boy (if that's half a sandwich, the whole one must be crazy big!) and the house salad. The bread was so flavorful and fresh, and the salad was very awesomely vinaigrette-y without being soggy.
I have family that lives in the neighborhood and Adriana's was a short walk from their house. We got there before 11 on a Saturday and there were already a few groups in line ahead of us. We were told that the place gets packed pretty early. I can definitely see why. I love the family-owned dynamic amongst the employees. The dining area is no frills and it works. The staff is quick to clear your tray and plates when you're done with them
Bonus: I got to make my own Arnold Palmer! The drinks area is self-serve and they had lemonade and unsweetened tea, perfect for mixing.
I can't wait to go back on future visits!Listed in: 20[100]12

Today, I discovered that Adriana's has got it goin' on. Meat like a tender pot roast and herb flavors melding together in the beef romano soup. Italian olive relish, a perfect foil for the salami and roast beef in the "Carlo" sandwich. Some delis prepare sandwiches with average thick-skinned tomatoes, but the slices in the middle of mine had the texture and taste of vine-ripened.
I like the efficiency of Blues City, the beer-and-wine background of Macklind Ave., and the gluten-free options of Nora's. But, when it comes to flavor, I've got a crush on Adriana.Listed in: Suburbanite in STL ..., Lunch Lady Land

Adriana's has surpassed Amighetti's as my favorite sandwich shop on The Hill. Everything I've had there has been amazing, but I have a really hard time NOT ordering the Italian beef, because HOLY CRAP it's that good. The peppers and onions just add enough to send the flavorful, juicy beef over the top as the best roast beef sandwich I've ever had.

Review from Pamela R.
I was pleasantly introduced to Adriana's on a sunny Saturday afternoon as my reward for helping a friend move. I was NOT pleasantly surprised the narrow streets or playing dodge car with oncoming traffic on the Hill.
I digress...anyway, I had one of the best sammiches I've ever had. I got a Beef Philly. Roast beef with cream cheese and a side of pasta with red sauce. I could taste the homemade goodness in each tomato chunk. Delicious. I also taste tested the side salad. Test went well. Very well. Why have I not been to this place before? Why did I not go back the very next day? I'm pacing myself. Adriana's could be addictive. Hey, if you are going to have an addiction, this is the one to have.
Adriana's also does pizzas and cold sandwiches. Cute little place with some seating outside as well. Worth the trip to the Hill for me. Well worth it. -

As good as it gets in STL. Joe Special is fantastic - if you want to go extra healthy, have them put it on garlic cheese bread and add some spicy giardanara. Its a win Chuck Sheen style.
As much as I love Mama Toscano's and Gio's, there is no real space to dine in, and this is right up there with the sando.
Price is a little high, but what can you do........Its a 75 year old woman's deli that is only open from 11-2pm everyday. She loves throwing in free fountain drinks if she sees that you are a regular, so that makes up for her 10-15pct sandwich up-charge. Plus she's a sweetheart, so stop being so cheap. When you factor in that your not tipping - which is what you would be doing if you ordered a sandwich this good, which are usually only served at restaurants - it comes out even.
Agree that the line is a pain, but plan around it. If you come at noon be prepared to wait. I always try and time my Adriana's very early or very late, or be prepared to wait 15 minutes. -

Stop #25 on my "Eating my way through Chicago/St. Louis and possibly doing other things on this trip Summer Tour 2011" took me back to the hill in search of a sandwich I could bring on the plane with me. My host suggested Adriana's and that is where I ended up.
Adriana's has been around since 1992 so it isn't super old, but it certainly isn't new. Upon walking in I felt like I was in for a good experience.
I obviously knew I was going to be getting a sandwich as I wanted to bring food with me on the plane so I would have something good to get me through my flight, but there are salads, pizza and pastas to be had and what I saw other people eating looked really good.
Anyway, I had Ben's Special ($7.50). Turkey Breast, Ham, Roast Beef, Provel Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Pickle, Onion, and our Special Dressing is how it is described on their menu. Again, I chose to skip the Special Dressing (mayo based) and went with oil and vinegar instead. All on a wonderful Italian hoagie.
It was a few hours between the time I bought this and the time I actually ate it, but after the oil and vinegar soaked through a bit, it was wonderful. I ended up having the second half a day later back home in Portland, OR and it still held up.
Beautiful Italian deli. I wish I had one of these near me. -

One of my all-time favorite sandwich spots in St. Louis. Everything is quality, i probably most commonly go with 'Mary's Special'. The salads are good too, so going with a half-sandwich/half-salad combo is a good choice as well (especially considering that half a sandwich is a pretty large portion).

When I think of the best sandwich in the world, I picture Adriana's!
This is a must have when I am in the area, even if I am not hungry, I will stop in and get a sandwich to-go.
There is always a line, but it moves fast and although the place is always full, I never have to wait for a table.
The food is amazing! The portions are generous! It is the kind of place you visit on a regular basis....eating here makes me smile:) -

I'm from Jersey and have been disappointed with quite a few sandwiches on the Hill. Not at Adriana's. I actually skipped the sandwich and ordered a slice of Sicilian pizza, which came with a side of salad or pasta... I don't eat lettuce, so I went with the pasta. Thought this would save us a couple of bucks and I'd share my husband's sandwich, but the slice and pasta came to $9.50! A *cheese* slice, mind you- a big one, but still. Well I never...
I was good and ready to get pissed off (Jersey people are always ready to get pissed off) when I tasted their food. Wait a St. Louis minute! (These minutes are twice as long as a NY minute, FYI...) The crust was nice and crispy on the bottom. Minced onions and peppers flavored the pizza sauce perfectly. I'm not feeling pissed off at all. Now to their pasta sauce- sweet, tangy, hmm... I'm actually feeling happy. Can I get a bite of your huge sandwich, sweet husband? Wow! Bread, meat, pepperoncini... their Hill Boy's special sauce seems like half mayo and half creamy Italian. I think next time we'll share a Hill Boy and ask for oil and vinegar. There will DEFINITELY be a next time for me at Adriana's.
For what it's worth, pizza always costs a lot more here than in Jersey- why I do not know. I'm willing to suck it up and pay more if I can get a good slice, and you probably are too. At least the highways are free here! -

This was the place that I went with the kids after we went to the zoo. This food is so good. And yes we ended up going to the zoo a lot so that we could eat here.
We would go to the zoo and my daughter would tell me, dad we have to go to Adriana's. We all just loved this place. After I moved to San Diego, this is one of the places that we miss in St. Louis.
This places is a must visit. -

I took my mom here on Saturday when she was in town, and we both really enjoyed it! This was a first time experience for the both of us, and I'm definitely going to come back.
I had the Italian Salsiccia sandwich, my mom had the Meatball sandwich, and we both had house salads on the side. Everything was really great. I love Italian salads, and this definitely met my expectations. I'd really like to come back and try some of their sandwiches made with deli meat, like Ben's Special or Teresa.
The place was packed when we got there around 12:30 and did not show any signs of slowing down by the time we left. After we ordered a table opened up and we quickly grabbed it, which was lucky because there were absolutely no tables available up until that point! I don't know where we would have eaten if we hadn't snagged that table!
I would recommend getting your food to go, visiting during the week, or maybe not in the middle of lunch on Saturday! But that almost added to the experience in a way. It definitely had that Italian deli vibe to it. The employees were very friendly too.Listed in: Hangover Cures

I thought they were actually over priced. In my opinion, Gioia's Deli on Mackland is better. -

I've been on a mission to try all the "best" sandwich shops in St. Louis, and Adriana's is the best. The food is great, the service is relatively quick, and it makes a great lunch stop if you are downtown.
It may not be the fanciest joint, but you will not find a better sandwich in this city. -

As an Italian-American who did not grow up in St Louis, I love the Hill's grocery stores, bakeries and other shops. I'm sorry to say, however, that the Italian restaurants have been nothing but a resounding disappointment...EXCEPT for Adriana's!
Super tasty sandwiches! Great soups and sides! Amazingly friendly staff! Total neighborhood feel. I love it there. Just today I saw a staff member burst forth from behind the counter to bear hug a regular customer. Tender moments...I enjoy them.
You know what else I enjoy? Good food. I stopped by today with two friends who had never been. I ordered half of The Hill Boy sandwich (salami, mortadella, ham, pepperoncini, special sauce) and it was delicious. I love soups and the Soup of the Day (Garden Vegetable) did not disappoint. A tomato based soup with big chunks of vegetables, small pasta and even some 'scarole? Italian Grandmas everywhere would approve!
My two friends each got half of a meatball sandwich and a side (pasta salad and a green salad respectively). Both enjoyed their sides and raved about their generous 1/2 a sandwich. At the end of our meal I snuck a taste of their meatballs.
Here's the thing about meatballs: They are easy to mess up and hard to do right. I judge Italian restaurants on their meatballs. Adriana's were light, tender and perfectly seasoned. These weren't good meatballs, these were GREAT meatballs. Color me impressed.
Be advised that these sandwiches are HUGE! Half a sandwich goes a long way.Listed in: World Class Saint Louis, Tasty Lunches

Best sandwich in STL? Perhaps. I'm guessing it's either the second or third, behind Salume Beddu (1st) and Blues City (2 or 3rd). The Mambo Siciliano was great. Their veggie -- Sunny's -- is a proper veggie -- not filled with soy products or eggplant. The Gorgonzola Dip was a little deceptive -- i thought it was a meat sandwich with a Gorgonzola dipping sauce -- NO GO -- it was a little bit of Gorgonzola in a meat sandwich with a regular dipping sauce.
Tips: Cash only and closes at 3p. -

The best Italian sandwiches I have ever tasted. I was never dissapointed
throughout my experience here in Adriana's. Their staff is very friendly. The interiors were simple but classy and stylish. The food, is just perfect. They always see to it that all foods are fresh. I will be coming back here in Adriana's! I am recommending this to those who still have not tried Adriana's. -

For a lunch-time feast, this is it. There are many delicatessens in saint louis and for me, Adrianna's has the best tasting sandwiches around. Portions were enormous, which is not a qualifier for quality, but when it is as good as Adrianna's, the more the better. The bread is fresh and slightly chewy, the meat is quality and the toppings, while far from healthy, solidify the sandwich as the coup de gras of sandwiches in Saint Louis.

Awesome sandwiches. Went there this Saturday and had "Nana's Favorite" AMAZING. It's so good there was a line of about 15 people deep for the entire time we were there - it's that good, seriously... I don't understand about the complaints that it's expensive - a whole order is basically TWO sandwiches. So $8-9 bucks makes this place a steal.

One of my big pet peeves at restaurants is ordering food that I can make at home, so I basically never go to delis; thanks, but I'm pretty sure I have the ability and epicurean creativity to put together meat, cheese, bacon and vegetables with mayonnaise. To be honest, Adriana's on the surface is no exception to the rule.
However, there's something awesome about this small sandwich shop on The Hill. Their spinach and beef soup is only okay, and the only interesting thing about their famed Italian beef sandwich is that it intriguingly got better with each bite (starting from "eh" to "hey, this is pretty good.").
Their Italian grandmother, however, is awesome.
I originally got the large sandwich and soup, and she looked at me and said, 'no." I thought she meant she was out, until she said again "No, its too much food; you'll kill yourself trying to eat it all." I jokingly replied that I was a big boy that could handle it, and she again looked at me and said "No, I'll let you have the small sandwich and soup, or just the large sandwich, but not the large and the soup--that's ridiculous. You're mother would have a fit if she saw you trying to eat that much food."
You know what? Normally I would be mad at a purveyor attempting to tell me what I should and shouldn't do, but then again, I've never had a small Italian G-Ma telling me what to do--I'm Taiwanese people, we're programmed to listen to our grandmothers. Also, in this case, she was trying to save me money, which Taiwanese people are also big fans of; bless you Grandma for trying to save me money in these tough economic times--lord knows we could all use more Italian beef sandwiches.
Anyway, she was right; I finished the small sandwich, but I couldn't finish the soup. I love you, Italian Grandma. -

Truly amazing Italian sandwiches, absolutely worth waiting in a line out the door for. I have never been disappointed with anything here, but for your first visit you can't go wrong with the homemade sausage. Also recommended is the italian roast beef with gardinieri, and the penne pasta side dish.
They often run out of the good desserts midway through lunch hour, but you can always try to make up for it with a cookie. And realistically, you probably won't have room for bread pudding anyway, so cheer up.
The staff here is friendly and helpful, starting with the restaurant's namesake who takes your order, and as often as not, helps you order. I must warn that there is a real danger of becoming addicted to Adriana's sandwiches. Very authentic, very the Hill, very St. Louis. -

OMG if you like sub-style sandwiches, and you have some time, this is YOUR PLACE!!
At Adriana's, everything is homemade, right down to the salciccia & bread. You can tell that luv goes into this mouthwatering food, but be prepared to wait, because this casual little Italian eatery on the Hill is only open for lunch (M-S) and it gets jam packed!!
Adriana will wait on you personally. This is an order at the counter deli. Soups are homemade and they have a few great pasta dishes too. But, in my opinion, you can't get a better sub anywhere else in St. Louis. So, don't leave without trying one (you will only need a 1/2). Check it out!! -

Adriana's is yet another great restaurant on The Hill. I've been here on several different occasions and I've never walked away disappointed. I highly recommend Nana's Favorite, The Hill Boy or the Meatball. For dessert, the gooey-butter cake is awesome. I don't even like butter but I love this cake!
On the occasions that I've stopped by Ms. Adriana is working the register and clearly has a love for her establishment. That shows in the quality of the food - everything from the bread to the sauce used in her sandwiches is top-notch stuff.
It's always a fight between coming to Adriana's or heading over to Gioia's. I would rate the hot-salami at Gioia's a bit better. Though I think overall Adriana's offers a better selection.
There's a reason this place is always packed. Highly recommended! -

First off I will start off by saying their Garlic Cheese Bread was orgasmic. I can't find anything close.
I had their Sicilian Pie (Pizza) which isn't on their everyday menu. It was good, very good. I can't even describe it. It reminded me of pasta not pizza and the crust was like nothing I had before. Very intriguing.
The hubby had the Hill Boy and by watching him eat it I would say LOVED it. (I only got one bite!) Definitely a must come again. The range of people that come here is very interesting to watch. -

When you arrive in St. Louis, the first thing you should do is collect your luggage from the baggage claim, rent a car and drive immediately to Adriana's.
I can think of no other place that represents St. Louis style pizza better than Adriana's. Not that you should ignore the incredible sandwiches, calzones or salads they have to offer, but the pizza is the reason to come here.
I believe you should keep it simple. On our visit we each ordered a small pizza, I had sausage and mushrooms, while my Dining Partner in Crime had the pepperoni. We split a tomato and onion salad.
Embrace the provel! It's odd to be sure. It can be found no where else than STL, but that luscious creamy melty goodness adds something magical to the impossibly thin and crisp crust and the snappy pizza sauce. Like a symphony in your mouth.
Arrive early or you'll wait in line. The line moves fairly quickly and you'll soon be chatting with the other patrons so it's really no bother. Tables are premium real estate so stake a claim as soon as you can. I haven't tried the Hot Beef Sandwich, but I was told by a fellow line waiter that it is divine and the only thing she orders. -

This place is pretty good. I went here while I was in St. Louis for work on labor day weekend. I ordered the veggie sub which was huge and delicious. It was a little crowded inside so I'd recommend getting it to go. The portions are big so don't over order. I also had the cheese garlic bread which wasn't that good in my opinion. The person I was with ordered pasta which had a very good sauce to it. Would definitely recommend it for a lunch that will give you left overs for dinner.

Adriana's is only open for lunch and it's well worth a visit if you are in St. Louis. You may find yourself in a line that wraps around the dining room as you wait for Adriana to take your order. Everything is made fresh here, my only concern is that the portions are too big. Half a sandwich is very filling. The desserts are delicious, I a fantastic piece of chocolate cake on a visit. My favorite sandwich is the Mambo Siciliano.
Parking is on the street, there is no lot but it's all part of the experience. It's a family run place, a lot of the sandwiches are named after Adriana's grandchildren. Hey, go to Adriana's for lunch! -

This is one of my favorite places on the Hill. It is one of the better sandwich places and one of the better lunch spots I've been to.
The service is good. Expect to wait in a line that winds around the restaurant if you go during the lunch rush. At the end of the line sits the owner, smiling and ready to take your order. She always makes you feel like you are family.
The food is amazing. There is a variety of choices, too. The meatball sandwich is a great standard. The marinara sauce and provel cheese really makes it. I also like the hot Beef and Philly (with cream cheese, not like a cheese steak). The specials always make me doubt my initial choice. I had the Sicilian slice on Thursday and it was exactly what Sicilian pizza is supposed to be. The menu pizzas are good, as well. A nice example of what St. Louis style pizza would be like if Imo's got their ingredients from an Italian grocery. I have not tried the desserts yet, but they look great every time I go in. I just never have room for more food when I am done with a sandwich.Listed in: Best Pizza in St. Louis

Was there on 12-18 with family and the line was to the door for over an hour straight. Everyone comes in town for Saturday lunch at Adriana's before going to do their shopping. A lovely weekend tradition. As one crabby man put it, all the tourist crowd The Hill. Of course, my response was you're following me I was here first. My Mother had several questions about some sandwich and as I hinted to Mother we have a line behind us, Ardriana graciously said dont worry take your time and asked my Mother questions to get the answers quicker and offer suggestions on what to order and how she would like it. It was a very nice sentiment and she was very patient with everyone in line. Although it was crowded and everyone was elbow to elbow, no one was crabby and everyone seemed patient. Food was fabulous and I'm craving it ever since I left.
Italian beef is to die for. Skip the combo and get the 12" and eat it all with au jus -

We've been coming to Adrianas for years now. I'm a huge fan of the Gargonzola Dip; probably the best sandwich I've had in St. Louis. I always tell my friends from Chicago to try it out if they like a good Italian Beef. There are tons of sandwiches to choose from and the ones I've tried have all been from good to excellent.
I would have given a 5 star, but the salads are too oily and I don't care for their deep dish pizza. -

Too bad Adriana doesn't swing my way, 'cause I might just get down on one knee and ask that lady to marry me--if only to have her in my kitchen making me my favorite sammiches. The Gorgonzola Dip? I don't think I can even begin to tell you how much I love this place. LOVE IT. Homemade sausage sandwiches. Real homemade italian sausage. My father started taking me here when I was a kid.
The owner is almost always there taking the orders-- and I would guess it was her family working.
Be warned. If you plan to go there for lunch get there early or...well you will be screwed.
A fun story-- a friend of mine and I went-- a man was opening up shop near her and came in to ask if she would be okay with this. She looked gravely serious at first and the guy got nervous-- and then with a huge smile she leaned back and said "Of course! Good luck!"
Great place. Great place. Great place. -

This is a must-stop if on the Hill proper. A quaint, but often full, sandwich/pasta place, only open until about 3 pm. Been here quite a number of times, and the "Mambo" sandwich is probably the best cold sandwich I have ever had. Huge - big enough for two, but with wonderful quality ingredients and bread. Took folks from out of town (CA) here, one proclaimed his sandwich "the best he had ever had". Get the Sicilian potato salad and a dessert if you dare - they are all great.

The Best Sandwich in St. Louis hands down. Get the NaNa's Favorite. It is Italian Sausage and Roast beef. Also, when they have it, get the Sicilian Pizza, it is delicious.
The only drawback is it is a bit pricey, but you pay for quality and this is it.
