This review is for adoramapix, which prints amazing photos! I wouldn't use this site for your typical 4x6 prints, but it's definitely worth it to get your larger prints here. Their color correction is great and the prints come out beautifully on paper that you choose (matte, lustre, glossy). Their printing system is not a digital ink printer - they use the same system that was used for old fashion color prints and so the prints come out very sharp and true to nature.
The website is easy to use and has large storage space. I actually had my wedding album printed through this site and it was amazing. They make hard cover, bound albums that lie flat. Almost like the professional ones (the pages are a bit thinner) but at a fraction of the price.
I also like this site as it's actually connected to a physical place with real people that you can talk to.
I can't believe I just wasted 25 minutes of my day trying to verify that this place developeds 120mm. The only human I spoke to (Lula?) cut me off and transfered me back to the automated system like I was a jerk for calling.
It was a yes/no question.
Never bothering with this place.
Think twice before choosing Adorama over B&H. My sales person didn't listen well, didn't explain the return policy, and pulled a bait and switch on me so that I didn't really know what I had bought, until I exchanged it a few days later.
The refurbished lens I thought I had bought was really used one. When I returned it (because I decided I wanted to spend the money on a different camera), the serial numbers didn't match and I had to convince them that I wasn't pulling a bait and switch on them. Overall, it left me with a dirty feeling and I decided not to buy the camera I had planned to get. Does "used car sales" conjure any associations?
While I waited for them to verify that I wasn't trying to trick them, I noticed a couple of people having issues with their returns as well. One guy said, "I just should have made the trip over to B&H." I couldn't have agreed more.
(If you do go here, just make sure you know exactly what you are getting. If there is ANY uncertainty about ANYTHING, ask. FYI, it doesn't look like the store takes returns of online purchases.)
For my major photographic needs I still prefer B&H, particularly because of the huge choice. However, I also happened to find at Adorama a specific digital camera for a wedding gift that they did not have at B&H. As far as I can tell, prices and service are similar between the two stores. Adorama is a smaller store, and for many people that also means more manageable.
Where Adorama has a clear edge is in their AdoramaPix printing service: I use it all the time for my digital photo printing, and I am extremely happy with the quality of the prints (I love the Kodak Professional Endura Metallic paper; $3.10 for an 8x10 print, or $2.80 for 10+), how easy it is to upload your pictures, and the fast turnout (I usually get the prints mailed to me, but occasionally I pick them up directly at the store).
Interesting factoid:
Attempting to hide presents from the same significant other that you share a 1BR apt with is essentially impossible (I say "same" for all you playa playas out there on the interwebz). Especially when they arrive in the mail.
Long story short, I needed to have some photos professionally developed for my girlfriend's xmas present, but I couldn't guarantee that she wouldn't see it if I went through http://MPix.com and had them delivered. A friend recommended Adorama to me since you can upload your digital files to their website and then elect to pick them up from their store. Perfect!
As far as the ordering process goes, it was a snap to upload the files and submit the sizes I needed! I was a bit annoyed when the site kept telling me my credit card, which expires in 2014, had expired. I ended up having to use my PayPal account, which I don't think I've used since college. I elected for the metallic finish as well, which costs extra, but it's well worth it. In fact, I imagined that the photo development was going to be the more expensive part of the whole project, but it was getting the frames done that made that cost-meter in all of us go "ow, ow, ow!" But the frames I got somewhere else, so don't judge Adorama by that.
The part that made my anxiety levels increase steadily was the TIME it took to get them developed. I submitted well in advance of the 25th, and their website stated 2-4 business days. No problemo. The 4th business day rolled by and I still hadn't heard from them. I emailed their customer service, and they sent me a reply back akin to "oh hai! Sorry we didn't tell you this but thanks to the holidays it's now gonna take 4-6 business days. K, thx! Bai!" Thanks guys...
Luck of the draw would have it that I was notified three days before the 25th that they were ready, so I zoomed down to pick up the photos, which was a snap. I provided my phone # and then I was out of there!
So, for price and quality? 4-5 stars.
But for time and communication? Definitely 2(ish).
I am specifically commenting on http://Adoramapix.com, their online service. (@adoramapix)
Its awesome! Every time I go there (monthly), it gets better and better!! Last time you could upload your photos and create an order from 1 or more "jobs."
Now it pulls in photos from all popular online sharing services including Flickr, Picasa, Photobucket, etc.
Coupled with Adobe Lightroom, it is a great end to the creation process that begins behind the viewfinder and ends on professional paper. They give you the option to adjust each image and size independently.
That along with the fact that they constantly run deals online at http://www.twitter.com... makes it a great value.
I usually order all my equipment from B&H and never had a problem. After I debated on whether I really wanted to spend the money on a new lens, I tried B&H and dammit, the lens was "Out of Stock." I checked around at other stores and it was the same thing. I thought I'd try Adorama and their site said the lens was "In Stock." Yay! I debated a little longer because I didn't like the way I was treated pre-internet days with Adorama. So much attitude! Sorry for wanting to do business with you! I mulled over that lens long enough to want it and I placed an order. I got an immediate e-mail confirming my order.
The next day, I get an e-mail saying it was "Back Ordered." What?!? I really wanted that lens for an up coming basketball tournament I have to photograph. So, I tried to look at the bright side that I still have the older version of that lens and I would have longer a time to raise funds for the lens. I thought about switching to a another less expensive lens that I've been wanting/needing, but decided to not go through the hassle.
Then, a day or two later, I get another e-mail saying my lens was shipped! Yay! A week later, I am in debt with my new lens in hand and anxious to try it out. Would have been awesome if it was a Christmas gift from someone, but unfortunately I don't have any filthy rich relatives or anyone who likes me that much.
B&H is still my first choice. Adorama will be my second.
I bought a basic lens there once and the transaction went smoothly. They talked me into a lens case, but it was dirt cheap.
I'm giving them 2 stars, though, because I was looking for a certain point and shoot camera for a present, and since I'd had a good experience with them, I called to see if they had it. I called three times but I never got through to anyone. I called 17th Street Photo and they answered, and they had the camera, so they got the sale.
this review is about their online store/services only.
i used to shop around for camera stuff, but i found that i always wound up at adorama. customer service is top-notch--it's really easy to get a hold of someone on the phone, and they're really courteous and know what they're talking about. they also get used/refurbished equipment all the time, so i love just browsing their site on the occasion. i can't say anything for the actual store though.
also reviewing adoramapix--possibly the most intuitive, easy-to-use
yet very customizable photo printing service there is. they ship quickly and the prints look great--far better and cheaper than if you were to print yourself (unless you really know what you're doing and have the money to do it--though i mean, if you can afford an ink sublimation printer or something you're probably not reading this)
i love that you can save jobs for later and pull from other services as well. the interface is outstanding, though i could see a few places where i'd improve--for example, you can't see full size previews of the pictures you're printing, so if you accidentally uploaded two prints that look similar but one has some color corrections or something, you can't tell.
i've yet to be disappointed by adorama, though i'm saving five stars for when they really floor me with outstanding deals.
Horrible. Overpriced and the worst customer service ever!
Why do so many people work there? What do they actually do? They all act like zombies and could careless if you need some help! Take a number? For what? They just push the sales of things you actually don't need, but when you ask for a specific product, they pretend like they know nothing about it just because they are too lazy to look it up!
I would of never walked in here if I didn't need to return something. I was thinking about buying another background stand, but the customer service for returns was so horrible that I had to get back in line three times because everyone in there was so unhelpful and ignored me when I asked for direction!
Please don't go there. Parking is a pain. I almost paid $25 dollars to park next door because there was no parking on a Sunday on the street.
Don't waste your time. I rather pay for shipping from a company thats not such a rip off.
After I posted my review of my experience trying to do make a purchase from Adorama, I was contacted on Yelp by someone else from within the company.
I have to say, I was impressed by management's attempts to reach out to me and resolve the situation. I'd taken care of the business I needed to by that point, and couldn't keep getting back to them, but their willingness to go the extra mile and resolve my customer service issue earns them an extra star. Few companies will take that kind of care, and based on that, I'll be giving them another chance in the future.

Wow, Adorama. Just...wow.
I sat on hold waiting for someone to help me forever.

I'm really torn on how to write this review. First off, I'm basing this on my experience of ordering prints online and picking them up in store. Interaction with store employees is minimal.
After using http://MPIX.com for all my printing needs, my coworker suggested Adorama as an alternative. I hoped on and upon seeing their RIDICULOUSLY low prices on prints, decided to give them a try. I ordered a variety of sizes from 8x10 to a massive 16x20. I found their website a little difficult to navigate at times, but nothing to really balk at. A few paper and finish decisions later I hit submit.
Here's where it gets tricky. Seeing that they are essentially an offshoot of B&H, Adorama gets to be closed early on Friday (1pm) and closed all day Saturday. So, if you order prints on Thursday, EVEN though you are planning to pick them up in store (an option for New Yorkers= A+) I still didn't receive my notice that they were done until Monday. So even though MPIX delivers, and Adorama offers pick up, MPIX wins on speed.
In I went to the store to pick up my photos. Went by quite nice. I walked in, headed straight to the back, told the guy I had photos, he asked for my phone number and done. Out I walked with my pictures, anxiously awaiting the return to the office to check them out.
I must say I was very impressed with the quality. Very comparable to MPIX. I'm not 100% sure I'm ready to give up using MPIX, but at least I know I have options. However, when it comes to price, Adorama kicks MPIX in the ass.
Thanks Adorama! (http://www.adoramapix....)
I made a special trip to Adorama's rental store last Sunday only to find that the upstairs rental dept. was closed even though the store was open. When I explained my situation to the manager they were able to help me with my needs, coming through in the clutch just when things were looking pretty grim for me.
I'm very impressed with the customer service and perseverance the employees showed in helping to make sure that I was satisfied.
A great experience and now a loyal customer.
after calling a dozen stores in search of fuji instax film this place came through with the best prices and service. why it's such a pain in the ass to find it in san francisco is beyond me.
This is a photo lab review.
I live in San Diego and ordered 6 8x10s from their lab. I found their online photo submission interface easy to follow. My only gripe is that the site applied my settings to all the photos. For example, I had one black and white photo but ended up printing it on color paper because I found it a pain to get B&W paper for that one photo. That's one thing they need to work on.
My order was reasonably priced. It did take them longer than stated to get it to me; they said it was due to holiday volume which I guess is reasonable.
I was satisfied with the photos when they came. They were just snapshots and nothing fancy or artistic so I have to comments on color or anything else. These weren't great snapshots to begin with and were meant to go in my office because of the people in the photos. So I have no comment as to how good or bad their photo processing is. I do take some artsy photos, though, and I wouldn't want them messing with them if I used them.
I hesitate to give more than three stars because I know that there's so much more to a photo store than just the lab. In the past, I've found that photo store staff, especially in NY, are pushy and rude. I didn't have contact with anyone during this transaction so I have no way to evaluate that. I've also been oversold in the past but again I have no basis to judge that here. I think 3 stars "A-OK" is fair. I lend credence to some of the negative comments left here so I wouldn't want to up this store's rating just based on my order of 6 8x10s and nothing else.
Online purchase went okay. It took quite a while to ship the items out. Bulbs for lighting were all smashed. I just bought new ones from Calmulet instead of dealing with their phone people...could barely understand them. Make sure you only order stuff from them that is in stock.
Prices standard in comparison to B&H. I'd rather just buy locally.
I needed a pretty pricey accessory for my camera. Adorama had it listed in-stock online. Normally I'd buy it from B&H Photo but they were out-of-stock.
Huge mistake. First, the person I was on the phone with barely spoke English. This is not something that normally bothers me but if someone is hired to work in a technical position that requires a vast knowledge of camera parts, you need someone that can converse and not constantly have the person on the other not understand what you're asking and vice versa. It's frustrating to ask technical questions to someone that doesn't have a grasp of the English language. It gets nowhere.
I was undecided between two products for my camera and asked him if either of them would fit my camera, and he told me to buy something completely different. He didn't answer my question. When I asked him the question again, he was like, "What are you saying?" He said I don't need the product I'm asking about, and I got frustrated. He then said they don't have that item in stock. Yet, it's listed as in-stock online, so what gives? He was either trying to upsell me and/or not understanding what I was asking. I just gave up. I'd never use them to purchase anything!
i barely buy photographic equipment from here. this is a review of their photolab.
my first order was a dud. after all the color correcting i did, they CORRECTED IT SOME MORE and it was quite saturated. fyi, there is now an option for "STRAIGHT TO PRINT" meaning the "highly trained technicians" dont start playing with your photo's colors.
everything else? IT WAS GOOD.
i always get my pro prints from here - and as much as i want to try other places, adorama is still the cheapest with the option for pickup in their nyc store.
i got a 16x20 and it came out very very beautiful.
after i pick up orders, i go to the cupcake cafe a couple of doors down.
Wow. I've been going to Adorama before I ever read the Yelp review and had always had good service there, so I'm surprised to see the sub-3-star review. I'm not giving it 5 stars to compensate; I really do think it's a stellar business, especially considering the distinct disadvantage it has against online retailers and a brick-and-mortar the scale of B&H.
I love B&H and if I ever need to get some fancy lighting equipment, that's where I go. But otherwise, Adorama pretty much has the same selection of the high-end essentials with the same rebates and prices, all without the crowds. I've had indifferent service at B&H, and I guess it's hard to begrudge them considering the masses they deal with. At Adorama, every salesperson has been chatty, friendly, and reasonably knowledgable. I've gone in appearing as professional as I can (that is, carrying my much-too-expensive-for-me DSLR and bag...which admittedly, may fool no one), and I've gone in looking like any other point-and-shoot tourist, and each time I've gotten good advice on what to buy. The sales people I've had haven't been shy to pooh-pooh on some of the combo-packages Adorama offers if they feel I can get a better deal buying things separately. One salesman even pushed me to buy a piece of glass that was $100 cheaper than the one I intended to; it turned out I hadn't done enough research and the (much) cheaper filter was exactly what I needed.
I'm amazed that this place can still do decent business considering that it doesn't do the volume that B&H does to offset the disadvantage that brick-and-mortars have. In the several times that I've gone, their selling practices seem just fine, with no upselling besides mentioning the extended warranty policies.
I think Adorama stacks up favorably when compared with arch-nemesis B&H, especially since they stock some esoteric things that B&H doesn't carry. I'm a Ricoh GR enthusiast, and it's (close to) the only place in Manhattan to find it. The employees know their stuff, and they can engage with you regardless of your level of expertise, and without much condescension. I'm also a fan of their workshops and classes (some of them are free, even). They also pay pretty well if you sell them used equipment.
That said, like B&H, Adorama's walk-in store hours are inconvenient. I know why that's the case and of course I respect the owner's beliefs, it just makes it difficult to find time to get there unless you can plan your day around a visit. Another shortcoming is that in the ruthless efficiency of their system, customer service sometimes suffers.
Still, it's an excellent camera store, and my preferred destination for photographic equipment in New York.
I bought online from Adorama twice and I was very happy with the service.
I am especially grateful that they send a PDF of the invoice by email: 6 months after my purchase, the camera got damaged and if it was not for the PDF of the invoice, I would not be able to use the warranty (I did not keep the paper version that came with the camera in the mail).
They also answer the phone and respond to email even during Christmas time.
Digital-shmigital. The Rolling Stones wanted shelter - gimme film. Problem is that not many places near me stock medium format film - or if they do, they charge $6/roll for a roll of non-professional grade 120 film.
I ordered some 120 and a flash in the late afternoon and chose the 7-10 day shipping option for $1.50. I was shocked to get the perfectly bubble-wrapped box on my doorstep the very next morning from UPS.
Adorama had the flash and film I needed for the lowest prices that I could find online (other than used). This was my first Adorama purchase and I will be sure to use them again. I have used another big online photo supplier previously (B&H) and their service has not been this great.
This is by far the worst run company in the world. I don't even know how they stay in business. They are bunch of theives. They start by advertising low prices. When you place an order, they don't reply. Then you call and they tell you this item is out of stock and will let you know when you get it. When they get it, they will tell you this batch that came in had a price increase and we can't sell it to you at the same price. Well they have you locked in and want to push you into buying at the new price. They go back and forth with you to convince you to buy it and now they are negotating with you. I have talked to several people in this company and they are all from the same school. "Lie until they buy".
My advice to you, never do business with those bastards. Go and get your stuff from B&H Photo. They are the best. Forget about Adorama.
I had to make a yelp account today...because of adorama...
After making an online order, I received an email to verify my account (ok, no big deal..right?).....oh man, talk about horrible service. The Representative "Jorge" whom I spoke with, was not only rude but began ostracizing me that my order didn't exist, however the money was pulled from my account and was pending. After being ridiculed, I asked to speak with someone else. From there, the next gentleman I spoke with began teasing me about why I was worked up and irritated?! I then requested to put my order on hold, because I was trying to decide if I wanted to do business with them anymore. I called half hour later to cancel the order, only to find out that they pushed my order through.. without my verification.
**Sidenote**...this was a $1900 order....lets give around of applause to adorama's customer service...again, I only called customer service to verify my account.
I *ahem* threw out the receipt for my purchase of a Canon EOS 40D and Tamron lens. This became a problem when the lens was damaged and I needed to prove it was under warranty. I simply called up Adorama and in a few minutes, someone emailed me a copy of my original receipt from 7 months ago. Outstanding customer service.

I prefer Adorama over B&H. The place is quite small yes but you get all the help you need and when you ask, they pull out a lot of stuff out of nowhere like things transfered from wharehouse behind and up & down. So if you don't see things that you are looking for, go straight to the counter to ask. LOL
I have been a frequent shopper when I was taking some photography classes and I've never spent more than 30 min to complete any of my shopping there. Lines are shorter since the services are fast and they are quite knowledgable about things. And even dealing with equipment selling they are quite pleasant to deal with.
B&H was quite a rip off and a lot of store clerks didn't know much stuff to answer questions, not to mention darn crowded and you feel like in a zoo. So peaceful in Adorama~~compared to that. yay!
I can't believe some of these reviews. I had the best experience with Adorama. Not only did they promise me that my prints would be done in time for my presentation, they called me when they were ready.
I had a problem with my new Epson printer and was forced to visit Adorama on a Sunday (mainly because they were the only shop open on Sunday that would be able to process my film in the way that was necessary). The salesmen were so helpful, and knowledgeable on the subjects I knew nothing about.
I love them!
I simply used this place when I needed some pictures asap. Placed my order online and picked up the pics a couple days later with no problems. Finito
I was frustrated with the service I got at B&H and one day, when they didn't have an item I needed in stock, I went to Adorama instead and haven't gone back to B&H since. They have a much more friendly vibe, even though they have all the same items in stock (and I think the Epson ink is even very slightly cheaper), and somehow it just feels so much more manageable and approachable.
The guys who work there are very knowledgeable and nice, and David, the customer service person is awesome. I bought a Spyder Express because my prints weren't matching, and didn't realize that all it was going to do was calibrate the monitor. Pretty much, what I bought wasn't what I needed, and thanks to David, I was able to return it, even though stores have a no-return policy on software (them included). I was so relieved and happy that he was so accommodating and helpful.
The rental department is excellent also. I LOVE that you can place your order online, and that the weekend rental 1-day rate starts on Thursday afternoon. When picking up and returning, I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. Couldn't ask for more.
I was impressed when Adorama's customer relations rep contacted me to explain that this crappy guard had been a temp and wouldn't be coming back. My review before the unpleasant guard experience would have been 4 stars: knowledgeable staff, reasonable prices for high quality prints, solid selection. Now I feel like I should add "extremely responsive and happy to address complaints."
I'm absolutely willing to give them another shot after this quick response to my issue. I'm impressed that they actually wanted to fix the problem and win back my loyalty.

I use them for photofinishing and equipment. I've found that, generally, they'll beat other prices on equipment and typically ship out pretty fast.
Better quality and cheaper than ANY pro place in Chicago to get photofinishing done, and shipping is pretty inexpensive (in comparison to Chicago's sales tax). Check out the line of silk paper....omg.
TOP NOTCH customer service reps.
If I could give them a zero I would - these employees are BY far the most rude people I've ever met. They think everyone is below them and helping a customer is pain. I had such a horrible experience in the store that i wrote to the company via their website. I never even heard back from them , not even a "we;re sorry you had a bad experience in your store and hope you give us another chance in the future"...these people are complete jerks, go to the store and try to get one of those employees to help you without scoffing a major attitude and I will be real surprised!

first place ,i get annoyed when they try really hard to sell refurbished goods to you saying "this item costs you $300 less .. think about it!!"
and second, immediately after you say i am not interested they kind of shrug their shoulder, jerk their head and non verbally make it look like "hay i was trying to help you out.. well you have missed a good deal....anyways.."
even though i bought some equipments from here i am still not satisfied...they don't have enough options either..
DISCLAIMER: Review is for online purchases only.
Strange as it may seem, I like to shoot film. It isn't that I am hesitant to make the migration to a DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera*, I just like the look of film and I am proficient in the use of my 35mm and medium format cameras.
Over the years I have become a big fan of the eye-popping colors of Fujifilm's line of slide film (Velvia, Provia and Astia), as well as print film (Pro 160C/160S, Reala and Superia) that render great flesh tones.
Adorama is one of the places where I purchase film online. They have great prices and I've found that I save $2 - $3 per roll of film buying from them rather than purchasing locally in Seattle. The savings include shipping and handling!
So what do I do with my savings? Happy hour! Duh!

* I know it is a little early for Christmas, but if Santa is out there reading this (channeling my inner Ralphie Parker from "A Christmas Story"): I want a Nikon D300 with a 18 - 200mm lens and MB-D10 Multi-Power Battery Pack and Grip!
i just discovered the magical 6th floor of rental amazingness, and i am so excited.
i rented a super awesome nikon lens for a totally reasonable daily price, and i had a great time with it. the customer service was great - everything was quick and easy. they were helpful when i was picking a lens and didn't give me any attitude.
i will definitely be renting from adorama again.
My experience with this business was not good at all. I went in to get a price on my digital camera to sell back to them. The men who work there seemed as if they really didn't want to help me. A sales rep prints me out a ticket and told me to speak to another gentleman. The guy he wanted me talk to was helping another customer, with 2 other customers waiting behind him. After a few minutes I realized he was not helping a customer, he was making small talk with some guy. Once I finally got his attention, he looked at my camera from 4 feet away for literally a second and said "I can't help you." I looked at him waiting for him to continue. He didn't. I smiled, thinking he was one of those old guys who pulls your leg and jokes around with customers and said "Haha, what do you mean?". He said that he cant buy my camera because it's not manufactured anymore. Really? You couldn't have told me that when I first approached you? You couldn't have looked at my camera for more than a second? You couldn't have treated me with respect, and respected my time? This place is a joke and I will not give them my business, and I suggest you find somewhere else to bring your business too.
Stopped going to B&H for a while (unless B&H is the only physical store that carries what I want), and Adorama is the to-go place now. It's less hectic and it's definitely NOT a mad-house. Staff are generally helpful, friendly and relaxed.
Service here was meh yesterday. I was looking for a carrying case for my new camera, and they had hardly any on the floor. In addition, I couldn't drop a similar model camera into the case that they did bring down for me.
The use of sales floor space here is not spectacular, there's lots of doo-dads and small items that can easily be put up into stock.
I wasn't thrilled with having to go to their website to find the SKU of an item before they could look it up. The salesperson that was trying to help me here was not very knowledgeable.
I basically wasted my time here before venturing over to B&H to get what I needed.
i've rented from there and bought from there.
both times the salesmen were very helpful, ans
wering any and all of my amateur questions without making me feel like a bonehead.
sure, it would be nice to be able to peruse the goods without having to ask, but there's something to be said about good old fashioned expert customer service.
i haven't tried b&h because i'm too lazy to go uptown, so i won't be like the rest and compare the two.
I've ordered prints from Adorama several times now and have been very pleased. The turnaround time is very fast. They give you several paper options--I'm now hooked on the metallic paper. It's very easy to upload files and they have a generous 40-meg max file size limit.
Most importantly, my prints always make it all the way across the country with absolutely no damage. Adorama has perfected the shipping and handling process and it's nice to see this level of attention to detail.
