Review from Joe F.
Chicago, IL
After driving by every day on the way to work, I stopped in and got a rabbit for a dinner I hosted with friends. The rabbit was prepared quickly and neatly. The quality of the meat was top notch. It made an amazing stew.
Yes, the smell in here is a little different than many city dwellers are probably used to. If you spent any time on a farm, you'll recognize some of the smells.
Service was quick and friendly.
Definitely plan on using more live poultry in the future. -

This is a butcher shop with live animals that recently opened on Lawrence. It draws a mostly immigrant crowd, but I wandered in curious, and hoping to get a rabbit.
You walk into a big white room, on the left side there's the backseat of a van (not kidding) and some drink coolers. On the right side there are some spices and two lawn chairs. It's sparse, but clean. Opposite the door there's a window where you can order whatever animal you'd like from the extremely nice, unintimidating, and gracious owner.
They have chickens, roosters, ducks, turkeys and rabbits - all alive in cages behind the window. You can smell the animals, which is odd, but unavoidable I guess. It's not overwhelming, but it's there.
When I asked for a rabbit, he took one from the cage, and held it up for me. "This good?" he said. The rabbit looked at me, and our eyes met briefly. "Good," I said, looking away.
I felt like this was a test as a meat eater. If I couldn't look a rabbit in the eye before sending it off to be killed, I probably have no business eating meat. I'm happy to report it wasn't particularly difficult. The bunny was pretty cute though...
The owner was really nice about everything, he butchered the rabbit in such a way that I could save the back legs in a separate bag for a separate meal while not messing up the opening in the rabbit's stomach (which I was planning on filling with stuffing). He also took the head off for me, because I was reasonably sure it would make my girlfriend cry. The rabbit was still warm when I got him home-
It turned out great! I'd never had it, it's like a really lean chicken. I stuffed it with a whole wheat/cornbread stuffing and wrapped it in some thick cut bacon from Harvestime. Fun experience, and I'll definitely be back for chicken and duck!
