When people ask me what kind of yoga I do (and it's the Bay Area, you know, so people ask that) I say "crazy French motorcycle yoga." I've never been to another yoga studio with such a diverse mix of ages, sizes, languages, and hobbies or jobs that encourage/require us to focus on different poses because someone has a weird new wrist thing.

I've taken Chris' classes for eight years and I'm stronger, more grounded, and better off for it. Heather Haxo Phillips is also great. This is not a place to show off your cute outfit. We won't notice. But we'll cheer when you make progress on that pose you've been struggling with.

This was not the worst yoga class I've ever been to, but it definitely wasn't the best.

The studio is poorly ventillated so the bathroom smell sort of lingers. The location of the studio also puts it on a very noisy block so that you can hear everything that goes on right outside. This kind of thing doesn't generally bother me . . . except when someone else in the class feels the need to comment on absolutely everything, including the foot traffic outside: "I can really feel that stretch! Oh, this is great for my hip! That's some colorful conversation going on outside!" This isn't entirely the studio's fault, but things can be done to create a culture of QUIET relaxation and focus, noisy foot traffic or not.

This particular class also required the use of all kinds of props, which wouldn't have been an issue at all except that the instructor kept taking mine to demonstrate and then not give it back. When I'd come back with a new strap or whatever, I'd find that I'd missed the majority of the demonstration. There also wasn't much focus on or talk about breath and the flow just seemed really choppy even without my constant need to go back and forth to the storage room. I felt like the instructor was somewhat unfocused so there was a lack of flow from one position to the next. Instead of focusing on my breath, I felt like I was constantly looking around to find out what would happen next, or crawling around the room to grab the block that the instructor had moved just out of my reach.

I did feel somewhat stretched and relaxed when I was done, though, and when I woke up this morning my back didn't hurt as it has for the past few months. At the same time, my experience doesn't make me want to recommend the studio to anyone. After just one class, I am by no means an authority; I could have simply chosen the wrong studio and class for me. However, my experience was a stark contrast to the five-star Yelp rating that inspired me to try it out in the first place and I just wanted to make potential students aware of the down sides they might encounter at Adeline Yoga Studio.

The serenity of this space with its calming color scheme is a perfect counter to the street life outside the door. It is also centrally located near BART and local bus service.

But the only reason you should go to a yoga studio is for the TEACHERS. Chris Williams will yoga your socks off. His friendly face, good humor and careful and detailed instruction are super solid.

You don't have to pay to use a mat or any props and there is a clean bathroom on the premises. The classes are always full of mixed ages and abilities and Chris is able to accomodate everyone.

    I totally recommend this Studio.

I recommend Heather Phillips' restorative yoga workshop. Heather is most gracious, helpful, compassionate, & very knowledgeable. I felt different after her workshop and thought maybe I had grown several inches.

The noise outside was a little disconcerting, especially when sirens wailed nearby.

Other than that, it's a great studio with lots of props and easy to get to.

The last stop of my east bay yoga adventure this summer: Adeline Yoga. Cute, small studio. Just one room; simple; no frill; pretty down-to-earth.

Style: Iyengar yoga, which is slow and uses props such as wooden blocks, chairs/benches, straps, cushions, etc. The class I had involved two blocks, one chair, one strap, four blankets, and each of our sticky mats. This is my first 100% Iyengar-style yoga class, so I'm not quite used to it yet... But I like the huge emphasis on the proper alignment of the physical body. I don't get that in my normal vinyasa class, in which postures usually flow from one to the next very quickly. And I have little time to make sure that my poses are anatomically correct. Not here. The instructor doesn't compromise on the precision of postural alignment. He would adjust you and make sure you're doing it right. Which is great. You'd get a good stretch and come out more balanced and centered.

Not a work-out class. No sweat. No music. No talk on mindfulness and spirituality. Just get to the point, and get it right. I'm still not sure if it's for me but if you practice Iyengar-style yoga and are looking for clear instructions and attention to details, this would be the studio for you.

Chris Williams teaches yoga well.  The postures are fully explained, classes are well paced.  This is not an "exercise class with music and yoga postures" .  It's YOGA.

Chris Williams founder of Adeline yoga is one of the best teachers I have been fortunate enough to come across. I have always had neck problems and had not been able to progress in my yoga practice, until I met Chris. He has a way with making you feel that things are simple and fun,  that you can do it!  I was also able to really trust him...  he was paying attention. I had enough trust in him that I felt I  would be able to get into the pose without pain or injury to my neck. It has propelled me forward in my yoga practice. He is a wonderful teacher and his place is clean and inviting. I would highly recommend Chris as a yoga teacher. I also love how easy it is to park!

I've been out of Yoga for about 5 years and am just getting back into it, and am amazed and saddened by how far my body has slackened and stiffened in all the wrong spots!
I was a yoga regular for 8 years, volunteered at 7th Heaven for a while, and thought about becoming a teacher and then dropped it like a bad habit(ironic yes)
I have only gone to 2 classes here on Wed. nights so bear that in mind.
I see Val L.s point in that the studio is nothing fancy and the foot traffic/basketball bouncing is definitely heard in the room, and I think I was the annoying person last week commenting on everything (sorry class, sometimes I'm just yappy and can't control it) but I *just* started so apparently it is a common problem. I have been on the other end of that and know how it can be :(
However, I'm not looking for twangy sitar music and choreographed super structured yoga- I'm jaded and over that so massive places like Yogaworks make me uncomfortable- call me weird, I have yoga rebound issues!! :)
Chris does use blocks, straps and blankets so while this is a good stretching workout, it won't make you skinny, if that is what you are looking for. He has a great focus and I have learned new things about muscular training from him already. I'll keep going, and keep quieter :)

Chris has been my yoga teacher for 9 years.  I came to him with so much wrist pain, I thought I had to give up my gardening business.  He worked one-on-one with me throughout the class.  I am happy to say that this was just the beginning of the many ways Chris and Iyengar yoga has saved me, my body and my business.  This new studio is great!

There came a time in my life to  get out into my neighborhood.  I found myself oddly drawn to a yoga studio on Adeline that seemed so charming and authentic. I don't miss the endorphin high of those incredible early morning spin classes at The Club at all.  What I'm getting from Iyengar Yoga chemically surpasses anything I've experienced.  It is incredible to me that one right action could reap such dividends. Chris Williams, Heather Haxo Phillips, Allan Leon , and Jessie Holland are such lovely charismatic people.  You will adore them for all different reasons.  This is food for mind, body, and soul.
