This place is awesome. If you have never been to SF and are looking for a hostel, the Adelaide would be an awesome choice.

Their prices are Good especially for all they offer. It is so easy to make friends and the staff is super friendly and accommodating when you have a question or need something fun to do.

Breakfast is provided every morning with a variety of things to eat.

The rooms are clean, neat, and there is enough showers and restrooms so you don't have to wait. They have a bar crawl every night with William, who is extremely knowledgeable, friendly and makes any new comer feel welcome. The rooms upstairs are more private, however I felt the basement rooms were the most comfortable.

There is always people to chat with at breakfast, dinner, and at night there is always a good crowd to hangout with in the dining area OR hangout in the lIving room area, read a book and hangout.

Every time I visited here, my stay was always an amazing one. I recommend this place to everyone I know who is visiting. The responses are always positive when I meet someone else who has stayed in this amazing hostel.

If your thinking of going elsewhere.. Don't do it. Adelaide you Rock!

Roughly 50/night for a private room and 3pm check in.

Pros: Great location for exploration of the city and a complimentary breakfast fit for college kids (assortment of breads, jams, along with coffee and tea) It was all around good and exactly what we expected. There was a small flat screen with a dvd player, which was good when we were really tired and wanted to pop in a movie bought from the Walgreens nearby. Also, the front desk was mellow and helpful.

Cons: The room is small and can get hot, but you can open the window in the bedroom and bathroom. The shower would be really hot or really cold, no in between warm.

I had quite a nice stay here.  The rooms were very clean, the beds were comfortable and everyone I met was friendly, as you might expect in San Francisco.

The common areas are basically split between a cozy upstairs space  with couches and coffee tables, and a down stairs dinning/kitchen/lounge space, which is the late night hangout.

Will was an amazing host for the pub crawl, and gave us a great introduction to San Francisco's nightlife.  He seemed to really enjoy his job and it was nice to have such an instant friend upon our long awaited arrival to the city.

    What a lovely place!

I booked here after staying 2 nights in a previous hostel that I just wasn't feeling. I was desperate to find another hostel that was cheaper and had an extended availability...I had to be in the SF area for 2 weeks and didn't feel like jumping hostel to hostel. Luckily, Adelaide had a 12 day availability, which was exactly what I needed. And, after reading all the positive reviews on it, I decided it was a good bet.

I was so lucky I found this place. It's tucked away in a little back alley between Post and Taylor, so it's removed from a lot of street noise. It's kind of hard to find if you've never been there, however. It's also kind of far from main transportation (maybe a 5-7 minute walk from the cable cars and BART/trains, but I'm from NYC so a 5-7 minute walk is virtually nothing).

I've now been here about 5 days, and I have to say I'm very pleased thus far. For my 12-day stay, it's costing me around $400, which is NOT bad at all when the Marriot nearby is nearly that per night! Adelaide is quaint, cozy, and everything it boasts. If you don't know what to do, there are tons of things advertised in the main office area that the staff will gladly set up for you. Tours, trips, etc. Also, the hostel itself promotes their own events, like wine and cheese on certain nights, and bar crawls. I didn't partake in these because I'm here for work, but a lot of the people staying here seem to do them.

I'm staying in a dorm-style room. They have both co-ed and single sex. In a dorm room there's 6 beds and a sink and lockers. The bathrooms/showers (each private, which is nice) are out in the hallway for the floor's use. My advice is to take  a shower midday or at night to avoid the early morning jam that usually occurs.

Housekeeping usually comes by a few times a day to clean, which is nice.

I considered buying a padlock for my belongings since I'm sharing a room with so many girls, but I have to say I don't feel I need to. I feel like my belongings are pretty safe here, and that everyone is here for more or less the same reason.

This hostel is a little stricter than others I've seen; they have quiet hours at 10pm, which is fine by me. However, if you're looking for a party place, this is not it.

I'd have to say that the best part of this place, however, is the free breakfast. You don't realize how much you treasure these things until you're on a budget. Every morning from 7-10 they offer a free breakfast of homemade oatmeal (so good, it has raisins and fruit and spices all stewed up inside...mmm). Also, all sorts of breads, bagels, etc with all sorts of spreads. And free coffee and tea. At night, they make homemade dinners from scratch for $6 a person. For such a cheap price, I was amazed at all this place had to offer. I would not hesitate staying here again if I come back to SF.

Stayed here a couple weeks ago with a few friends. I'd heard a ton of negative things about the hostels in SF, but I can't complain about my stay here at all. On the contrary, I couldn't have asked for a better experience.
All the basics are there: clean rooms, good location...but they also have an absolutely amazing staff, and great drinks. I highly recommend the pub crawls!
Couldn't ask for anything better--I will definitely be coming back!

I have been living here for five nights.
I lived in the shared room and met the friends from Finland, Colorado.
We had dinner together, and they took me to the SFMoMA and watching Giants' game.
The hostel atmosphere is amazing, I missed it so much now.

This place has three separate locations.  We stayed in the post street location.  The Asian guy that was working the front was pretty funny and all the other employees we came into contact with were equally as nice.

Onto the room.  We stayed in the three bed ensuite which consisted of a full size bed and a single bed.  We had a pretty good laugh because it was nicer than the "hotel" we stayed in the last time we were in SF.  And we had such a great view!  We actually used to live only two blocks up from the hostel so it gave me a sad / reminiscent feeling of being "home". The rooms were clean as was the bathroom.  The room also came with a microwave and a fridge.  Next time I"ll know to bring a bag of popcorn.
We didn't get to explore the hostels at all since we were in late and out early, but I will stay here again.
The price is great!  Especially considering the location.

This was the best hostel I stayed in while traveling down the coast of California. Well kept, clean, fun environment, nothing to complain about. It has it's own little road so it's quiet and you can get a great night sleep.

Also I paid $5 for a big lasagna dinner which was pretty delicious. It was so popular that they ran out and had to make more... Get there early if you wanna eat like a king.

We met some kids from Montreal, England, Ireland, Australia, and probably other places that I forgot. Very social common room if thats what you're into, but if you'd rather read a book and sip on some tea or PBR, there is a huge lounge to relax in.

Hostels used to scare the shit out of me. Thanks, movies! And even after travelling for years and getting used to them, they still bugged me in some ways. Usually you have a choice of 3 things you will like, and then you just deal with the problems. It can be a pretty, quiet, friendly place, but you'll be far from things to do. Or it will be a hopping party spot with great services, but paper-thin walls and crappy beds with noisy, creaky bed-frames.

Adelaide does EVERYTHING right. It's right in the middle of the best part of SF. It's crazy easy to see the whole city from here. They have a great, super-friendly Aussie staff that makes you feel at home. Giant kitchen fully supplied and stocked. Big common area. Great location off a side street so there's no road noise. Good water pressure in the showers. :) CLEAN. And the best part...

Not only are the bed frames solid and noiseless. Not only is the bedding comfy and warm. Not only do all the rooms have big windows open to ivy-covered walls to let in that cool SF sleeping air at night. All that is great, but nothing compared to...

There's a frickin' Sealy Posturpedic Plush mattress in my room. This mattress is like sleeping on a cloud of titties, and you can be damn sure when I got to pick where to sleep I jumped all over that. The other mattresses are quite comfy too, but damn... to spend $20 a night to sleep on the most comfortable mattress I've ever found in the middle of one of the world's greatest cities?

Deal. Done and done. Stay here. You'll be stoked and well-rested for having done so.

(and the better you sleep, the more energy you'll have for their evening pub crawls :)

I spent a summer night here in 2004.  The staff was pretty great except for one little thing. You see, I checked in around noon, to a nice little room with two twin beds and paper thin walls. Cute little room with a TV and sink, I was happy with my room, dropped off all my things and left for a drunken night on the town.
When I got back in the wee hours of the morn, I was surprised to find a girl sleeping in my bed. I went to the front desk and was told someone forgot to put me down.  But no worries, there was a cot.  ...somewhere in the hostel. And thus began the hunt for a cot.

Whatever.  Besides that one little detail, I had a pretty good night.

I may be the only person in the history of the world to get a private room at a hostel. Maybe that's exaggerating, but it is pretty uncommon as a private room limits the whole "hostel experience." Why get a private room you ask? Well, um, that's doesn't really matter. I'm going to plead the fifth on that one.

The regular shared hostel rooms here are nice and clean, but the private room is great and really similar to a regular hotel room, with a private bathroom and everything. And as it's much cheaper than a regular hotel room it's a great place to send your out of town guests.

This hostel definitely has an international feel with very few guests from the U.S. Also, it has a very community feel to it, with lots of the guests hanging out both inside and outside of the hostel. The only drawback is if you should have to do a walk of shame from the private room to the front door after a long night (not that I did or anything) you have to walk right through a room full of all the friendly people you were previously socializing with.

While running for my life from the aforementioned Globetrotter's Inn down the street, 3 days after arriving in the city, I found the Adeleide Hostel which I cannot say enough good things about.  I'm almost sorry I had to leave and get my own pimpin crib so I could have fancy things like a bathtub and a refrigerator.

PJ, the owner, is the most awesome landlord ever, (I don't think he ever sleeps) running around making sure everyone is OK, offering help and advice, and letting me stay there for a friggin month and a half making a nuisance and offending his guests while I was looking for a place to live.  God bless that man.

    1) The rates are reasonable ($20/night  plus you get tea and scones in the morning plus free wireless internet plus storage for your skis or whatever)

    2) The tourists coming around are awesome, cultured and enthusiastic, and some of them are very cute and always up for going to new places.  They are also only there for a few days so don't get too attached to them.

    3) the rooms are decent (unless you get the room with the old Irish guy who snores and barges in and turns on the lights in the middle of the night, after doing god knows what, for crying out loud, the man is 70, what is he doing at 3am? Hitting the club scene?)

    4) The staff is fun and friendly (yes, they are a bunch of party animals.).  If you ever go to Lupa in Noe Valley, say hello to the Italian girl Susanna, she is hilarious.  She is also a hottie.

    Rock on, Adeleide.

Call me crazy but I didn't think this hostel was all that. Stayed 2 nights and saw at least 5 different people working behind the desk, ranging greatly in degree of helpfulness. One guy who I asked for basic transportation advice (best way to get to Castro) was completely useless. The common room/living room was very nice and cozy, but my 4-bed dorm room was very small and cramped. The closet had no hangers. I saw baby roaches crawling out of the sink. My bed and pillow were very uncomfortable and I had to use earplugs to get to sleep due to the noise from guests talking outside in the alleyway at night. The $5 dinner is a good deal but the included breakfast is nothing special. Their coffee is a travesty. The location is OK.

If you're looking for a party hostel or just a "go with the flow" place you'll be happy here. But if you have limited time and an agenda and need a good night's rest each night to carry out said agenda, look elsewhere.

I've stayed at the Adelaide 2005-2008 for the week of Macworld. Gerard and staff are fantastic and they don't bother you which is a good thing. I've stayed in private dorms, mixed dorms and pretty much every room they have available and never had any complaints.

I can say that at night, the upstairs rooms do get kind of chilly in January. They have a kitchen and common area. It's a younger crowd that stays there so be prepared to hear people up late at night.

I have been to the Adelaide and had SO MUCH FUN at the Wine and Cheese event on Thursday night. The host, Will Hester, is one of the nicest and most sincere members of the staff. He made me feel more than welcome even though I was there by myself. The downstairs lounge is so cool and has lots of room for people to hang out and chill. Will was playing his own personal mix of music which added a nice vibe to the room and quiet enough so that I could chat with other guests. He also hosts an awesome pub crawl on Saturday nights to nearby clubs and bars. When you come to San Francisco, be sure to look for him and feel welcome at the Adelaide.

3 years ago, I came from Germany and I arrived the day before new years ev. So I was tired, overwhelmed and packed. A French guy who flew with me recommended the area around Adelaide Hostel as central. So I found this little hostel in a one way street. When i went inside I was a little confused: little space and so many people. Once I figured out who is working there and who is not I was able to get a bed in one of those '6 beds rooms'. I tried a hostel before, in Manhattan and it was not really funny. So this time I hope luck would offer me something different.

So since hostels are not hotels I didn't expect service at all. Compared to New York: You get a bed which doesn't look like it would fall apart if you look at it. The sanitary part was not really what I like but than again: I didn't want to stay too long either. Therefore it was good enough.

What was great is the fact you could wash your clothes and the breakfast was yummy. So when I made it through the shower the next morning and I had my breakfast, I felt the place was ok. After the breakfast I was released that I didn't have to spend billions in order to send a short email to my folks, letting them know that I am ok.

So for 30 bucks central in the city you get maybe not the biggest bang out of you bug but good enough as a backup plan (to drunk to take a taxi).

Mingling with the people: no, not really. They are polite but beyond politeness my intuition tells me, better not.

There was one guy who seemed to be a nice person, but maybe he was gay and was trying to hit on me - what do I know...still, he was friendly, friendlier than the rest of the people who worked there - therefore 4 stars. I talk to the owner (boss?) and he seemed to be very stressed, very selfcentered, unwilling to interact with people...not really the inventor of hospitality.
So beyond what I mentioned was good I would not recommend that place, rather keep it in mind for a nite in which I am drunk in SF and not able to make it back to the eastbay.

i'm pretty sure that Adelaide is one of the best hostel in SF. Welcoming and warmhearted, good atmosphere all day long and at night too. The staff is HUGE and does an amazing work. The free breakfast is a real one, more than a fake madeleine and shitty coffee, no this is really awesome. $5 dinner every evening, fresh and homemade then delicious.
that is very clean too. And one of the girl of the staff is so mystical/cute/hot that i've never been able to start a conversation, but that's my problem.

I had 3 hostel experiences preceding finding this place.
The first was a crack/whore house that doubled as a hostel...no, really.
The second was a bed bug and scabie farm, that baited innocent guests into their haven of evil and unprofessionalism to feed their brood (See my review on the Amsterdam Hostel).
This is my 3rd place, and Dreadilocks has finally found her place, until I leave for Australia in a couple of months.
I went away for a few days to LA and came back to this hostel after staying for 1 week and it almost felt like home. They remembered my name, walking in the door, people waved and welcomed me back. Staff is always pleasant. They take keeping this place clean quite serious, especially the bathrooms - which have always been in mint condition since I've been here.
The beds are clean, the rooms are clean, the 'extras' are what make this place really special. Free Wine & Cheese days, Pub Crawl, Free daily breakfast selection, $5 hot, homemade dinner (they even accommodated for my food intolerance!),  TVs in both common rooms, movies via HBO or Satellite playing around the clock, HUGE gorgeous (and clean) community kitchen, posting of local events and tours.
They are sincerely good people collected from all over the country.
They attract good people from around the world. I've made friends and contacts there from around the world that I'll likely keep touch with for a years to come. It is very much like a 'College/Dorm" vibe.
There is also a storage space under the bed (depending on the room you are in) as well as a HUGE storage space elsewhere on the property.
No bugs, no weirdness, no grief. Interesting to see with the number of people who work here, and the number of guests at any given time, they always manage to be helpful and professional.
    Best value per dollar.
Can't say enough about this place.
    Love it.

The private room my friend and I had here was very, uh, minimal.  Although there was a handy room safe, there was no:  TV, phone, heating controls, dead-bolt lock, peep hole, or even a single hook to hang up clothes.  And in my opinion the sheets and towels looked dirty, the bathroom fixtures were loosen and a bit broken, and plus there looked like there was some mildew in the bathroom.

And for the icing on the cake, I'm no bug expert, but my friend and I found what looked like cockroaches.  Crawling on the pillows.  Yes, the pillows.  *jaw drop*  I seriously don't think I have ever been that freaked out.  I left my friend's room there in nano seconds.... and so did he.

Sure, it could happen in the best of hotels, or so I've heard.  But my friend said he noticed these big bugs running off through a hole in the bathroom wall.  So, I hate to say it, but I do blame the establishment for not filling that hole.

I will say that the management was very nice and kindly gave my friend a full refund.  If they fixed up the place a bit, I think this hostel/hotel could be a winner.

Loving/helpful staff, very home-sweet-home-like on the inside, competitive prices, tons of bathrooms, quaint kitchen/eating area, big flat screen TV in main area constantly showing movies, storage room for luggage, bikes, etc....

I'm pretty lenient with my reviews of hostels, as I've stayed in plenty around the world. Using that as a basis for comparison, Adelaide was a pretty good place.

I stayed here for a few nights on my way back to the States from Australia. The location is somewhat hard to find, but you can't blame the hostel for that. I checked into a six bed room which was clean. All the toilets/showers were also clean.

Like anywhere in SF, they had free wifi. They also had their own computers for those laptop-inclined. The only downside is they had no communal TV.

Downstairs they have a full kitchen and free breakfast. They also have $7 dinners which aren't too bad.

I really enjoyed my stay! It was neat meeting people. I loved the bathrooms -- they are individual rooms with showers or toilets or both, and there are several on each floor. I used the airport shuttle they recommended and it was really simple. Front desk people were nice and helpful. They have internet available to check email or skype. The hostel is also centrally located -- just a few blocks from Union Square. And it's cheap! Thanks :)

I stayed at Adelaide while exploring SF for the first time. I was a little nervous about being a solo traveler and not knowing were to go and what to see. I'm from Pennsylvania and it was my first time in California, but the Hostel is a location close to all the fun things to do downtown. The staff was helpful in answering questions and giving recommendations on what to do. It's also great place to meet people who are staying in San Francisco from all over the world. I met a group of travelers from Sweden while chowing down the awesome breakfast at the hostel and we explored the city together one of the days I was there. One of the best parts Hostel stay was the pub crawl with one of the staff, Justin, he led a group of us through the city night life to some great bars and he made sure everyone was having a good experience.

I would definitely stay at Adelaide again and recommend it to someone for the first visit in SF.

I went there the day after New Year's and ran my usual inspection. We had the private dorm (the Claire, to be exact) and the sheets had a bunch of woman's hair on them -- they seemed unchanged. The towels didn't smell too good and the bathroom was dirty -- mostly the floor, which is kind of disguised by the weird tile pattern. We went downstairs for a little while to try and mingle but the people there didn't really talk to us. I guess Americans aren't that interesting. It's a really difficult place to find, even if you're looking. It's in an alleyway and the street you have to take to get there is one way, so if you miss it, you're really screwed. Parking is a HUGE problem too. Ugh. It's definitely the worst hotel I've ever been to, but even then, it wasn't too bad.

Great place to stay.  Their $5 dinner is unbelievably good for that price.  When I went there, the cook who was serving everyone seamlessly switched from language to language depending on who he was serving.  The whole thing feels like a college atmosphere.  Everyone's really friendly and the dining room is just full of long bench tables.  Upstairs, there are some computers in case you want to check your e-mail and they're in pretty good shape (even though I'm pretty certain you're not going to choose your hostel stay based on the quality of the computers).

So far so good. I'm writing this from within the hostel and I love it so far. It's everything a hostel should be in my opinion. Friendly front desk staff who helped me out when I was running late to my job in Union Square and then again when I got back about 6 and was frickin' tired and ready for a room.
I've seen no bugs like described previously in some reviews. The Internet is free (and I think I need to stop hogging it soon or I will be the most hate American in all the land I'm sure). The have free breakfast, or so I'm told. I've only just got here and have not experienced a morning here. I look forward to breakfast being made for me before I have to return to work.
I do believe I've pack too much but I had no idea how long I would need to stay. Apartment hunting can take a while after all.

Most importantly, I loved the feel of the place when I first walked in. It is well decorated and feels so welcoming. I had a rough 24 hours prior to this and now I feel at home. So that's very positive.

OK now I will return you to your regularly scheduled programing...(yes I have a weird side).

    Update: January 7, 2009 @ 6:04 am

This is by far one of the best hostels I've stayed in, in the US and in Australia (well there were some pretty comparable ones in Australia and maybe one better, but it was a 2 million dollar - 2 weeks open when we checked in, it was furnished by IKEA! Anyway, I'll save that review for when Yelp kicks off in Australia....... Which I'm totally open to do the research and leg work for HINT HINT HINT)...there I go digressing again.

So Adelaide, sweet Adelaide. You had me at "Free Internet and WiFi" and then you won me over for a second night with your interesting and fun staff. (Ally was amazingly helpful and so very nice, Thanks and at least 10 Kudos to Ally)

Top Ten Things I love here:
    1. Free Breakfast (bagels, muffins, assorted breads, NUTELLA, Jellies, etc etc)
    2. The Discount phone card machine currently to the left of my computer (if you have stayed here, you can guess which computer I'm at, make a game of it)
    3. The Staff
    4. The rather comfy beds with warm sheets
    5. The available washer machines (haven't used because my money is tight) which are about $2  a load or something...I haven't used it so I don't know.
    6. The Kitchen/dining common area downstairs where you can go 24 Hours a day and her music and such or meet someone interesting to talk to (lots of Aussies and I love it & surprising a good number of Americans from around the country like the guys who so kindly invited me to drink wine with them my first night...Thanks Collin, William, and the gang).
    7. The great daily tips for stuff to do in the city, including the free options (I totally missed the free day at the Exploratorium yesterday, I'm sad for this  because I LOVE that place).
    8. The showers/bathrooms (common) on every floor.
    9. The free Hot Tea available 24 Hours
    10. The lights and outlets in every (I think every, don't remember if my first bed had this) bed nook.

For the price you pay for all this, it's pretty amazing how much there is offered here. Try it one night, and if you don't agree....well then you can try going to the hostel my sister I stayed at in the "Beef Capital of Australia" in the height of summer heat. Oh man that was my own personal hell...mainly because it was so damn hot...which they couldn't really help my air conditioning more than ceiling fans, which pushed the hot air down at you, wouldn't have hurt at all.

Note my vote for the "Inexpensive" Price range is based on my staying in the shared rooms. It gets pricier - as with any hostel I've stayed at, with the more room privacy you want. But it's a great way to meet people by staying in shared rooms and I've never had problems. I still talk to a girl I met in a New York hostel who was visiting from Ireland. She rocks!

All the makings of a good european hostel.  Friendly staff, clean rooms, although I treated myself to a private room.  Free WiFi.  I was only there for one night.  A Saturday.  It was lasanga night so for $7 I got my hands on some delicious home cooked vegetable or meat lasunga and salad and a fun conversation with french, italian, english and australians.  Ended up going out with everyone on the pub crawl, which was pretty disappointing.  The chick running the show seemed ill or exaushted so it carried through the pub crawls performance.  Good location.  Solid hostel for someone trying to save some money or if you don't want to stay at a comfort inn and you want to actually interact with other people.

This hostel is average to above-average. Rooms are fairly clean- could be sanitized more (bath). Very good deal for what you pay! VERY noisy part of town so if you are a light sleeper not the place for you. Breakfast was late twice (suppose to be 7am at Dakota Hotel- one of their properties next door)- made my morning plans run behind. Do recommend and would stay here again! GREAT STAFF*

I arrived for a short stay on sunday, and was really impressed with it. It's clean and everyone here is friendly. The beautiful Sara that works here actually took me and some others for her own personal pub crawl which was amazing, we ended up at five or six different bars. she should do the regular pub crawls too!  Stay here and you won't regret it.

I stayed at the Adelaide last year around Christmas last year while I was trying to find a place in SF.  (Better a delayed response than none at all.)  I LOVED it!  The staff was wonderful, the space clean, quaint, and quiet, and the vibe chilled out.  Not to mention the free breakfasts, wine night once a week, and central location in the Tender nob (near the galleries and within walking distance of Union Square, Polk St., etc.)  I got a good night's sleep every night, along with plenty of social stuff going on. Not sleazy or loud like the Green Tortoise, safer location than the HI in the TL, WAY quieter than the Elements hostel in the Mission, and more totally affordable.  I recommend the Adelaide to anyone looking to visit the City!
