THIS IS THE BEST WINERY IN PASO ROBLES.

I am not alone in this view.  They purchased the Hoffman Mountain Ranch (HMR) that brought the Paso area fame for the wines that are produced from this appellation.  Those vines are still producing the best grapes and Adelaida is making small batches of wines to exploit the goodness of the crop. All of their varietals come from production of less than 1000 cases with many of them below 500 cases.  Their reds are unfiltered & unfined.

It has been told to me by a few in the wine industry that Adelaida has taught many other wineries in the area - how to make wines.  They built a new processing plant at their current location and it is a nice multi-purpose facility for events and tastings.  http://www.yelp.com/bi...

Smartly, they present their Reserves and Estates during the tasting.  http://www.yelp.com/bi... All of the labels have the history and data on the wine.  I would encourage everyone to gladly pay the refundable $10 tasting fee because there is one or more wines being poured that you will like and buy.  If you are an obnoxious, drunk, moron, (usually escorted by drivers in vans and buses) these wines are out of your league.  A visit to Tobin James on the westside of Paso would be better for you.

    We tasted:

    2009 Pinot Noir - HMR Vineyard @ $40 - great varietal expression
2009 Cabernet Sauvignon - Viking Vineyard @ $35 Really special stuff
2009 Zinfandel - Michael's Vineyard @ $36 Smooth on the palate, good finish
2009 Syrah - Anna's Vineyard @ $32 more subdued than other bold Paso Syrahs
    2009 Version - Anna's Vineyard @ $36 a blend that is delicious - to be savored
    2004 Cabernet Sauvignon - Viking Vineyard/HMR @ $60 Unbelievably fine wine

    WE BOUGHT THE ENTIRE LINE-UP.

They have many more wines for sale, so I think we will be back.  Just to make sure, we joined the Tribe wine club.

Although with some trepidation, considering our earlier disappointing experience there two years ago,  our small wine club recently returned to Adelaida Cellars.

    Wow!  What a difference!

Their delightful wine was never in question.   Their lack of customer service, and earlier rudeness was.  How wonderful to be treated this time by two knowledgeable and friendly pourers.  They were the best, and they knew not of our earlier experience.   The young woman from Iowa State went out of her way to may sure we were informed, accommodated, and even went outside to take pictures of our group.   Her taller partner treated us like royalty, and added an Adelaida tote bag or two along with our wine order, since "Adelaida" is also the name of our daughter-in-law.

Great wine, great people, great visit!... this time.  Thank you.

This was our first stop on our last day of wine tasting.  The hubby and I shared our tasting, and we got to taste quite a number of wines.  They even opened one of their other bottles (Grenache) which wasn't part of their regular tasting menu when we asked about it.

We wound up really liking the Grenache, so we got a bottle of that, as well as their "Tribe" Rhone+Zin blend and Cabernet Sauvignon.  We were comped our tasting since we bought a few bottles.  This place is worth a stop on the west side of Paso Robles.

On the day before Zin Fest, the pourers in the tasting room were all sass, in the best possible way. Adelaida produces excellent wine across the board.  The viognier and the syrah hooked us.

Adelaida has great, knowledgeable staff and you get to see the full storage and bottling operation which is very cool.   The wines were very heavy on the whites (I prefer Reds) and lots of Rhone influence, common in the area.

Had a great time, great conversations with the servers, but walked away with a 'blah' result from the wines.

Their wines are good (not spectacular), the vineyard is sustainable which is really great, the tasting room has potential but needs remodeling, their label looks haunting, the staff is very warm & friendly. You should stop in & check them out.

Standing tasting at a long bar with retail & misc. wine items.  Nice drive & lovely grounds.  No/ltd cell service.

We were there early in the day (10-ish) and happened to be there with a group of 6 (one of whom was a club member).  They were a bit overwhelming (including having the club member buy all their wine & then they each asked for separate checks AFTER it had been rung up -- Really?), but the wine educator (I can't remember her name) did a good job of trying to serve them and balance with us too.

The upside to the club member being there was that she had opened several club-only bottles, so we ended up tasting 9 or 10 wines, including a small vertical of the Cab S and the library '03 Zin.  Very nice portfolio ~~ their white cuvee, Pavanne, a white Rhone blend, is very good.  The Version Rose was good.  Then into the reds -- Pinot, Syrah, the Cabs & Zins, and the Rhone Red.  All were nice ~~ Rhones were definitely the winners, though.

We bought a bottle of the Pavanne (b/c we are very red-heavy by nature), so the tasting fee (if there was one) was waived.

    Definitely worth a stop.

Adelaida!  I love this winery.  It is one of my absolute favorite wineries.  Whenever we are in Paso we always go to this awesome place.  I am in love with the table wine, School House Rock.  Yum!  The service is super friendly!  There is this one gentleman, I don't remember his name, but definitely is the one you hope to get when you walk in the door.  He educates on the wines and heightens the experience.  He is so kind and funny and remembered us from the last time we were there.  It was more than a year.
    I love the Reds...yum!!

My wife and I   had the tasting room to ourselves early one morning last week and Tony poured us extra samples and allowed us to tour the racking room, where we had an informative discussion about oak barreling and related matters. The tasting experience at Adelaida was outstanding.  The staff was fantastic.  Knowledgable and articulate about the wine and the terrior.

The  attention to  detail and customer service is also apparent in the wine.  Every tasing  was a star. The Cabs were really nice.  We joined the Wine Club immediately,  First shipment arrived last night.

I know what I am doing for Thanksgiving.   At least a couple of bottles of Aledaida and my dinner guests are going to get intimate.

I wouldn't normally write this review but given the fact that others have had similar experiences in regards to rudeness I will share my little story.  It is a real gem.

For the record, my visit was years ago and it was my first time showing my new girlfriend the Cambria and Paso Robles areas.  I called in advance and we were advised that we didn't need a reservation for a party of two (to be expected).

Upon arrival there was a friendly dog hanging around outside.  Unfortunately, the "dog" on the inside was much less friendly and had one heck of a "bite".  The gent (I use the term loosely) behind the counter who served us was an old timer who had a strong likeness to actor Philip Baker Hall.

Immediately upon entering the tasting room he made a joke about us needing a reservation and then indicated he was kidding.  The crowd at the bar laughed.  Apparently testing my gullibility he did it again when I asked where the bathroom was located.  The crowd roared again.  Yes, nothing is better than getting hit with a 1-2 punch from Tyson when you least expect it...at a winery.

Of course it would only get better during the tasting.  I have read a lot about wine since 2000, I have taken courses and I do many tastings.  Am I a sommelier?  No.  Am I fairly knowledgeable about wine?  Yes.

This "gent" went on to contradict EACH thing I told my girlfriend as I was attempting to educate her a little about wine and tasting wine.  I was not attempting to "Frasier Crane" her to death but "old timer" was either cruising my girl or loved verbally beating down younger better looking dudes.

Possibly he's a racist and directed his anger at me as to not be so obvious?  After all, she was the only Asian in the building.  No clue...but a wild hair was surely up his pompous ass.  Apparently he is the only one who gets to educate anyone about anything in HIS tasting room.

I still recall him critiquing me for rinsing my glass with water between tastings.  Sorry my friend, you can preach "rinse wine with wine" all you want but I'm not mixing my reds and my whites when I'm doing tastings.  In the past I've had some Shiraz/Viognier blends from Australia that we're quite nice but I am here to determine whether I want to purchase your wine, not to create my own intriguing blends.

The wines were "okay" at best and not a $ above the tasting fee would have gone their way anyway given the aforementioned treatment we received.  Good riddance to this barn-hole.  And off to Justin Winery we went to taste, tour and join their wine club.  And yes, Justin has much better wine.

    "Bitter Barry" signing out...

I'll keep this review short and to the point.

I would have to say that Adelaida has become a bit to "corporate" for me. I used to belong to the wine club and they do make good quality wines but after exploring Paso and visiting a lot of different wineries, I found similar (or better) wine at the smaller family run wineries with less than 3,000 cases. It's pretty expensive with most of Adelaida's average $35 with select library wines running $50 to $100+.

The tasting room is small and was crowded during our most recent visit. I will say that the staff was friendly and pretty talkative.

Value Tip: They have a good tasting Schoolhouse Recess Red at about $15 bucks a bottle.  Club members can get it for less. They also let you try select wines that they have open, especially if you mention that you are a club member.

This said, we won't be rushing back there anytime soon.  There are so many hidden gems in Paso worth visiting. During our recent visit we found those wineries with several  4.5 to 5 star Yelp reviews were the ones we enjoyed the most. Thanks all for your input... it's appreciated.

I enjoyed the wine here.  But the overall experience was not so great.

This note is to the vintner/sommelier/wine pourer, as one of my good friends said, "KNOW YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE!"  Clearly you didn't.  I am ok with being educated about wine while tasting however, the minute you snapped your fingers and said, "be quiet, you will learn something here" was pretty much the moment I got mad and stopped listening to you.  This man droned on for a long time before he would pour the next glass.  In fact, upon his finishing talking about one varietal, he forgot to pour and went right into talking about the next wine.  My very funny boyfriend piped up and asked, "Don't we get to try it now?"  Haha!  I felt like I was sitting in a lecture and the small amout of wine we were being served was not helping me get through it.

I also heard right from the start that this winery was angry about the size of our group.  We were 14 and this was our first stop.  We were clearly all sober and why in this economy would you not want our money?  Ughhhh.

Lastly, there is an announcement (on the business yelp page) that says if you mention yelp you can get a free tasting.  But, if you are yelping on the go on your smartphone like I do, then there is no service in this area and you will never find this out.  Thiks irks me and adds another negative to this situation.  Basically because I paid $10 to taste a bit of wine and get snapped at by a man.

We visited this winery early in the day on a weekday so we had the counter to ourselves. We had a long friendly conversation with Tony who poured us several extra wines in addition to the regular tasting. The wine was all extremely good and we ended up signing up for the wine club, something we've been resistant to - but the free shipping tipped the balance.

The road up to this winery is beautiful. We biked up, which was a pretty strenuous climb, but well worth it.

After a great morning at JUSTIN, we were eager to pour ourselves back onto sleek, twisting Adelaida Road. We were in need of a sandwich but I was determined to hit Adelaida Cellars. Drove up the hill, past the walnut grove and bellied up to the bar next to another couple that weren't as good looking as us. But let's be perfectly honest.... who is?

Mrs. KC: "Are you listening to this guy?"

    KC: "No. Douchey wine snob?"

Mrs. KC: "Yea. He's acting like he knows more than the tasting manager."

Things were looking a little pricey and we weren't feeling Adelaida until the glasses of perfect wine kept coming... and coming. Before the last varietal was sampled, we were members of the Tribe. Neither of us can recall rolling through a tasting and loving every glass. At Adelaide, we did! Kudos to your winemaker. Wow.

I cannot begin to say enough great things about this winery! I have been wine tasting up and down the CA coast and I might say that this is by far my favorite winery I have ever been to! Now, I have never been to Napa but I cant imagine getting better wine and better service anywhere else.

Brandon, the tasting manager, was so kind and helpful. He was so knowledgeable and kind that it may have ruined wine tasting for the ladies who had never been before!

Now their wine, it is unbelievable! I am not a white wine person for the most part, but not only did I walk out with their famous Pinot Noir, but the Pavanne as well!

    **FAVORITE WINERY IN PASO ROBLES**

Assuming that everyone has different palettes, every wine that I tasted here was above average; especially the reds. It was so good, in fact, I signed up to become a wine club member.

Service was friendly and fun. No attitude contrary to several earlier reviews.

Grounds were lovely, tasting room was lovelier.

    No complaints here.

We'd been recommended this winery by several other wineries independently so that's always a good sign. They didn't disappoint. Although they had a $10 (refundable) tasting fee it was like they were having their own mini festival so it was well worth it. A regular tasting bar, special zins vertical bar and barrel tasting in two different oaks. Plus, the local butcher was serving tri-tip, sausage and the most incredible chili.

The wines are better than average with some stellar library zins and a Viognier to die for. I bought some the viognier, some rhone blends, a couple of older zins and a cab.

I had a  odd request: I needed to receive and send a fax while I was there and the staff were so very helpful and accommodating even giving me access to their office. While I waited Dominic opened some hard-to-find bonus wines to keep our palates ticking over. He is truly "salt of the earth"!

Adelaida is highly recommend for their wines, they hospitality and the overall experience.

Well this place isn't as homey as Alabama (or Halter Ranch) but we had a very pleasant time here. The older man doing the tasting was funny and quite helpful with the wines, although it was one of those tastings where they keep telling you that this zin is their bestselling zin (even if they have only two), that this cab is their bestselling red, blah blah blah. I don't really care what other people buy, I just buy what I like.

That said, the Zin I tasted here was truly special, and we bought it. I didn't care much for their signature cabs, but then again I don't usually like cabs much.

A nice experience, quite low key, very "west side".

There are not many wineries where my girlfriend and I enjoy every wine tasted, especially the whites. The Version (Rhone white) and the Viognier were great. They also had a great deal on the 06 "School house recess", which was very drinkable.
And they make Ice wine! I don't care if they 'cheat'. The fruit is not going to freeze on the vine in Paso Robles anyway. The result was not too sweet, and really flavorful dessert wine.

It was our first stop on our recent wine trip and it was a good start. The pourers were really friendly and chatty (a little too much for us since we were trying to maximize our visits to other vineyards). The guy was telling us about each wine and how it was made and showed us pictures of the vineyard and such. It would have been a great place to be if we weren't in a semi-rush to get to the next place. I can't take away any stars for being so nice and knowledgeable.

Their ice wine (they cheat and freeze the grapes after harvest!) and their version red were both tasty. I picked up a bottle of each before heading off to the next vineyard.

Bonus: they really liked the forester that we drove in on. yay!

This place is fun! It is not right off the road so you drive up a long windy driveway. The surroundings are beautiful. Once inside there is a bar area where people are tasting. There is also a warehouse type of area in the back that was where we were. The barrels were visible and stacked to the ceiling.

The man there was upset because we were 15 minutes late for our group of 11, but there did not seem to be a reason for his anger. There was no one behind us and it was not too crowded. Our pourer was nice and you got a lot for each tasting. It was $10 person for 6 wines (mostly reds) and ten there was a $10 credit toward a bottle of wine if you chose to buy. All in all, a great experience

One of my favorite wineries in the area.  Genuine, friendly and helpful staff, lovely high quality wines...    I've just always had a really pleasant experience every time I've been here.

Smaller tasting room and parking area... so it could get busy on the weekends.  That would be the only problem I could see.

We decided to hit the west side on our way through Paso and Adelaida was the first stop.  The beautiful drive up through the hills to the winery was definately a sign of things to come.  We got there early so we had the full attention of the tasting staff, very nice folks.  Loved the property, very scenic.

As for the wines, they were all top notch.  The Pavanne, a white Rhone style blend was excellent.  As was the Chardonnay and the Syrah (best Syrah I tasted on the trip).  I'll put the Viking Estate Cab up against anything from Napa... an excellent wine, very elegant style.  I left with bottles of the Syrah and the Pavanne.  I probably should have bought a bottle of the the Viking Cab, but was saving my cab $$ for Napa.

    Loved Adelaida!

This place is out in the boondocks.  We probably passed a dozen other wineries getting here and arrived right before they closed.  They closed at 5PM but they didn't rush us to leave.  We did a wine tasting that went through about 8 different bottles.  The tasting was $20 a person, but we bought a few bottles of wine so that was waived.  We had just finished going to the Firestone brewery and were already filled with beer.  I'm not a wine connoisseur but my favorites are the ice wine and the voignier.

We were there the first weekend in October and the following weekend was the Paso Robles Harvest Wine Weekend, which is an annual wine making event.

Every time I'm in Paso, this is one of the first stops. Most everything I've tasted here, is at the very least, good, but most of the wine is great! This was the first winery in Paso, that I had to join the wine club. As a member, they are also great when it comes to buying some of their library wines, without marking them up to unreasonable amounts. Friendly, and sometimes funny staff make the wine tasting experience very nice. The tasting room is very modest, with a couple of places to sit if you need to.

Overall, I love the wine here, and the staff are very friendly! Can't wait for my next shipment!

I enjoyed the tasting and it seemed like a good deal for $10 since their wines are a little on the pricy side. I especially liked the Cab Sav Viking Estate Reserve which goes $75 a bottle. Smooth like butter and full of character. They have a very nice tasting room and outside sitting area also. The staff was helpful and friendly. Worth the drive to West Paso for sure.

It is a beautiful drive through the mountains and hills of the Paso Robles back roads area to reach Adelaida.  The views along the drive are great.  As is the drive from the road to the tasting room.

My experience was very different from Holly T.'s.  We were met by a very friendly staff that remained focused and attentive despite a group of 12-14 people showing up at once without prior notice.  We got to try a wide variety of wines encompassing Rhones, Pinots and Cabs.  Only one was from their lower priced SLO label.  Two were reserves and the rest from their main label.  All were good.  Along the way were were given through descriptions and backgrounds on the wine and the pourer showed us on a map where the grapes were grown for each.

Although Paso is not known for their Pinots we bought one here.  It was quite good at $30 and is grown in a micro-climate more conducive to the varietal.

Excellent place to start our two day forray into the PR wine country.  Service was wonderful.  The grenaches and mourvedre were outstanding.   Also enjoyed the light port.

It is indeed a beautiful back road drive to get to Adelaida, as it's "off the beaten path".  But well worth the drive.  We were greeted by two older gentlemen behind the bar, which was very unusual, as nearly all our other visits, the pouring is done by young beautiful women.  It was a nice change of pace.  They were super friendly, courteous, and very knowledgeable.   While I enjoyed nearly all the wines their poured for us, I particularly like their Syrah.  They're a bit pricier than many of the other places we visited, so we did end up just enjoying the tasting, and didn't buy any wine.  Had we stopped on Saturday, rather than on our way home Sunday we would likely have grabbed a couple bottles, but by that point we'd already bought a ton of wine, and the prices for the stuff we really enjoyed stopped us from buying even more.

Very nice place, beautiful location, great staff, and some tasty wines.  Give them a try!

Ahhhh!!....finally someone in Paso has grown a proper Pinot Noir! :-).

A friend of mine runs a wine shop in Glendale and the Adelaida HMR Pinot is the only domestic pinot he carries.  So in my last trip to Paso I tried it.  It's not exactly Musigny, but it's pretty damn good. Not over ripened, alcohol isn't to out of control, and it really is balanced. Bought a bottle of the 06 HMR Pinot, as well as the 06 Syrah.

The guy in the tasting room was very helpful and friendly. When you can have an intelligent  conversation with someone at a winery and they will actually point out any possible flaws in their own wine, you know you're in the right place.

    highly recommended.

Adelaida was my first stop on a multi-day wine tasting and "wow" what an introduction. The wines were amazing and some of the few straight varietals in the Paso area - the Viognier, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon are all 100% single grape. They were also serving a Reserve 2005 Cab/Syrah blend that was amazing and a 2004 Cab from their Viking vineyard that was perhaps one of the best wines I've ever had.

Adelaida was also an introduction to the premium prices that boutique wineries charge which involved some sticker shock. But after trying many Paso wineries I still think it is one of the few wineries that deserves to charge the prices they do.

They charge $10 for tasting but as I pulled out my money the woman pouring said, "Don't worry about it... everyone always ends up buying wine so I never end up charging anyone." And she was right.

Thinking of visiting Paso Robles to do some wine tasting? Make this your first stop. Their long list of accolades is posted on their website. Mostly 90 points and above. I got to try the Chardonnay as well! 99 Points! Tasted like butter! I had to get a bottle to take home!

Based on previous dedicated tastings of Adelaida's wines, I had been looking forward to visiting the vineyard and tasting here. Also, previously we'd had good luck with the "far out wineries" of Paso. Although I usually like Adelaida's wines in general, I'd have to say that overall tasting here was a disappointment for me personally. The wine was OK, but the only outstanding wine was the last wine they poured, a reserve cab. I found it disappointing that most of the wine they were pouring was the usual Adelaida wines, especially those on the SLO label. When I come to the winery I'd rather have something special that I can't find elsewhere. Again, there was certainly nothing wrong with what we had, it was all very drinkable, but my expectations were higher. The people were friendly enough, and we went early on a Thursday so it wasn't crowded, but there was just nothing special enough in terms of either wine or experience that would make me want to return. However, the drive out on Adelaida Road was lovely, we saw at least 5 deer on this particular morning.

$5 tasting fee, an extra $5 if you want to keep the Riedel glass.

I keep telling hubby that we can't possibly join any more wine clubs (our cellar is overflowing) but after tasting at Adelaida, it was me who urged him to join. Our group tasted in the cellar and had a fantastic experience. Excellent pinots and zins. We even got to taste a zin that was still in the barrel. Sshhh.... Anyway, we are big fans. Though I've by no means been to all or even a fracture of Paso wineries, this was our favorite.  Well worth all those recommendations we heard from friends before tasting here.

i had to write something when i read reviews by bitter neophytes.

i've been coming here since the beginning.  in fact, there's a bottle of their '82 cab chilling at 55 degrees in my wine fridge.  the guy at the tasting room this time around, though, said "that's gonna be 'interesting' when you open that."  i'm sure.

these guys have consistently produced some of the best wine of any producer in the paso-area.

there aren't many wineries that i'll buy one of everything from the tasting menu and additional bottles of their newest pinot offering.  i think they do pinot better than almost everyone.  their chard is quite nice, too, but the wine geeks in their club bought it all.

if you're in paso, skip many of the no-name tourist traps on 46, do a bit of goggle-mapping and find this place.

they are NOT pretentious here.  if you think they're pretentious, perhaps you should double-up on the xanax.

(should you take the xanax i'm not advocating drinking and driving as well)
