ROOSEVELT ISL, NY
Addison has been cutting my hair since I was a little girl, way back in the day when my mom found him at Architects and Heroes! Unfortunately we moved away from SF a long time ago, but whenever we return we always make sure to stop by for a haircut! (Which sadly isn't as often as we'd like!)
Addison is super nice and friendly, but concentrates on getting the job done, and he managed to fix my botched hair (from Platinum Salon in NYC - which incidentally is my first review on yelp b/c it was THAT bad) and give my hair the layers it needed. Although it's grown out a lot since then, I can't bear to find someone to cut it here! Maybe I can hold out until March when I return...? :)
All in all, two thumbs up! -
Review from kelle k.
Angel Gives and amazing hair cut for a fair price, and she is so sweet and lovely. Every hair cut I have had has been great and has grown out very well.
Carrie Jo is the most brilliant colorist hat I have ever encountered. She is the Queen of "juicy hair" and is truly a master of her trade. Bonus....She is a total sweetheart.
The salon always has a super friendly receptionist and a nice clean environment. Lots of natural light, great magazines and coffee shop next door for the caffeine fix pre hair stylin'.
Un-metered street parking is not hard to find.
These ladies will not disappoint!!! -

This was my first time to this salon. Called them on a Sunday morning and Carmen was able to take me in at 3 that afternoon. The salon is small and in a very nice neighborhood. Carmen was nice and very professional. I told her how I normally style my hair and that I wanted something new. She made some suggestions and cut my hair perfectly. She was familiar with men's hair and asian's hair and cut it accordingly.
The only negative that I have is that it was a bit much. I paid $80 for a cut that cost $40 at other salons. However, because Carmen seemed to be an expertise with asian male hair I will probably go there again. -
Review from Liz S.
Addison the salon is a lovely place, and Addison the owner is a lovely man.
I came to know Addison salon in an unusual way, but I have found that many great experiences have come to me through unexpected channels.
I used to be quite the salon-hopper - fickle, easily bored, getting haircuts wherever and by whomever could do it as it was convenient for me. So I found myself in New York on a Sunday afternoon at a salon called John Masters Organics, where I met Tuula. She gave me one of the best haircuts I have ever had, and I left feeling that she was one of the few stylists who "understood" my hair. I was sad, because living in San Francisco, I could not count on my visits to New York to coincide with my haircut needs (she no longer works at John Masters, but I occasionally still buy the hair products at Whole Foods).
This is where I learned about bi-coastal hair stylists. Tuula has a regular client base in New York, and then travels to SF (where she is from) every six weeks to service her California clients. When she is here, she works out of Addison salon - I believe they know each other from Architects & Heroes. Thus I started going to Addison salon, which is a no-nonsense place with all of the focus being on cut & color.
There are plenty of salons in the city that will woo you with fancy interiors, foamy lattes, and sparkling champagne. Don't think for a second that you are not paying for those amenities - you are. I prefer the approach of Addison - clean interior, efficient and friendly service, and reasonable prices. One time I had missed Tuula's visits a few times due to my hectic travel schedule, and I walked into Addison with no appointment, desperate for a haircut. Not only did they accommodate me within an hour, Angel did a lovely job cutting my hair.
I visit Addison salon about 4-5 times a year, and have been for the past 5 years. The cuts are so good and last so long that I don't have to visit often - a true sign of an excellent hair cut.
PS - *WARNING* the location is very dangerous. It is right next to Boulangerie on Pine Street. You cannot smell the buttery pastry and not go in, it is impossible. Love handles alert.Listed in: Spackle & Paste

My husband and i have been going to Addison now for over 10 years. We have our haircuts done usually by Angel who does an amazing job and we're always happy. My husband's hair always looks so nice and beautifully cut. I trust Angel as she has never given me any weird looks but always feminine, easy to care for, etc. She's also very nice and personable. I have also had my hair cut by Carmen who is also great and who saved me when a stylist at Posh Salon butchered my hair the day before my sister's wedding. She had to go short because the other stylist didn't leave much to work with and I ended up with a pretty cute pixie bob which grew out nicely.

Review from Paul C.
Addison is seriously a nice place. There's tons of windows so light just pours in to both floors and the music is pretty varied, which for me is important at a place where I'm mostly going to stare at a mirror for an hour or so..
I've been going to Tina for at least four years and she is absolutely fantastic. Sam at the front desk is also very cool. Many of the other stylists seem a bit restrained and overly quiet but that doesn't bother me too much. And, the prices while not overly expensive are definitely on the higher side.
Plus you can hop over to Fraiche after to grab a Blue Bottle coffee! -

Excellent place for a haircut! My bf and I are forever devoted to Addison!
I've had the best haircuts here, previously I'd been going to Vidal Sassoon in NYC. I thank Angel (formerly from Vidal) for her graciousness and gentle cuts that still look great even after 8 weeks. Angel's a pro, and I highly recommend her. -

Addison Salon is the one and only place where my boyfriend and I get our haircuts. And Carmen is the hair goddess we go to.
In my case, I've always had a hard time bringing in a picture, explaining what I want and getting it. With so many stylists I've been to, it seems more like a negotiation than anything else. And I was rarely happy.
Stylist "Wow, that's pretty short/drastic/different."
Me: "Yeah, I know"
Stylist: "How about I do it like this instead?"
Me: "No thanks. I've already decided how I want it"
Stylist: "How about we split the difference?"
Ugh.
Before Carmen, I would have friends cut my hair or keep it long most of the time.
Anyways, back to Carmen and why I love her. First of all, she is an awesome person, stylish and cute as hell. More importantly, she is the best stylist I've ever been to. She will give advice if she sees an issue with what you want, she will give you what you want if you insist and will get creative if asked.
Her fingers are like tiny fairies dancing on my head and they are skilled. She takes her time, every cut is important, every strand taken into consideration. I can't recommend her enough. I always walk out happy. -

I go to Addison Salon specifically to see Carrie Jo and Angel. Although the salon is nice too. It's clean, the staff efficient, and not pretentious.
Angel's haircuts are fantastic! She's a real professional. Every snip is completely thought out and done with precision. I've never had anyone cut my hair that had so much focus. So every hair cut she gives me is perfect. EVERY TIME. And it stays that way for 8 weeks, sometimes longer. She doesnt over layer, cut too much off, or use some wacky new technique that doesnt lay right after a week. Just a straight up fantastic, pretty cut that makes you feel like a million bucks!
Carrie Jo specializes in color. She has a lot of experience with hair color and it shows. I'm one of those dark blonds that's not really blond or brown, just kind of blah. I want my hair to have pizazz without looking over done. Carrie gives me something amazing every time. Last time she gave me chunky blond pieces that, if you can believe it, looked natural! And I loved that no one else had hair color like mine. I got so many compliments. Plus when I leave my hair is sparkly and soft. She must put some super duper finisher on. I dont know what she does exactly but it's magic!
If you are looking for a new hair cuttress or colorist, I cant recommend these two highly enough. Finally I love my hair. -

I'd like to give out a big YELP to Addison Salon.
I've been seeing Angel for years now and can't say enough about her. She definitely gives precision cuts with great style, she's very, very sweet and extremely professional.
I love walking into Addison because, while small, the salon has a very calming, relaxing affect on me. Upstairs, where Angel's station awaits, there are usually gorgeous orchids at each station sitting in full bloom as if they, too, enjoy the peace and calm oasis from the bustle of the city.
I highly recommend this salon and Angel. -
Review from Nessie V.
When i was little, I went to a smoke-filled barber shop with my dad for haircuts. In college, i grew my hair long (small of my back) so I didn't need to go for cuts that often, and I'd end up at a different place each time.
So when I finally found a good short haircut that I liked, I went to Carmen on my S.O.'s recommendation. She is by far the best person I've had for my haircutting needs. Her fingers are strong but they are so gentle at the same time. I always come out looking good. She's also really good to talk to and I like hearing about her travels (ask her when she's going back to Japan to go shopping :) ).
Recommended for men or women. -

Okay my husband has hair that is hard to cut- thick, curly- so if someone gives him a bad cut, it grows out REALLY badly. He has been going to Tina at Addison for over a year and she has been consistently excellent.
Not cheap, but really good. -

I can only speak about my experience 3 years ago and I unfortunately forgot my stylist's name, but I received a decent cut. Nice layout & good location for the salon, but being the poor grad student that I was, I couldn't afford to get my hair cut there again.

Carmen is the best. I used to switch salons every couple of years, but I've been going to Addison for over 10 yrs now and it's all because of Carmen's cuts.
Some added pluses: (1) they make you feel welcome and comfortable there; and (2) Sam at the front desk is efficient, patient, and friendly.
Most places with stylists this talented, esp. in PacHts, have their noses stuck up as high as their prices; Addison, Carmen, and the rest of the staff provide an atmosphere that's far from that. -

At Addison Salon they don't need to make you feel bad when you walk in just to prove how great they are. Addison Salon relies on making you look wonderful and feel fabulous as you leave. Addison has been cutting my hair for quite a while now, and I've even recruited my husband to being a loyal customer. I can't say enough positive about this place and all the staff.

So, on Saturday, I was on Fillmore. After playing with fake eyelashes for a couple of hours at Shu Uemera, I thought I would treat myself to a blow out to complement my super hot eye makeup. I asked the artist helping me for a recommendation for somewhere close, and he said to go next door to Addison. I walked over and they took me right away. I told the guy that I wanted my super curly hair straight, but still with body. Let me preface this with, although my hair is very curly, it's pretty fine, and super easy to blow dry. I straighten it all the time myself, I just didn't want to take a shower and mess up my makeup. So, the guy spends like a hour drying my hair, and it was really pretty cute. A little flippy at the ends and with plenty of volume. He completely ignored the cowlicks and frizzys at the my temples. But he brought out the straightening iron, so I thought that he would take care of it. Another 30 minutes with the iron, and he had given me pin straight, no volume, no body, no personality hair, with a little frizz for good measure at my temples. It looked horrible. I told him I was unhappy and asked for Velcro rollers and tried to resuscitate. Another stylist even came to help, but just added insult to injury by laying on tons of products. The damage was done, he ironed my hair to death and there was no going back. Two hours and fifty bucks later. I finally got the hell out of there, having missed my eyebrow appointment with a head of flat, frizzy, cow licked hair for my party. The first thing my roommates said when they saw it was "you do your hair way better yourself". What a waste of time and money! Generally, when I get my hair professionally done, I like it to look like it was done professionally. Any 10 year old with a flat iron can press the life out of my hair, and generally that only takes 10 minutes.
Update October 2006.
So I wrote a bitchy 1 star review months ago and out of nowhere, I get a yelp message from the owner. He apologized and credited my account $50. It was months after the fact. I think that's really great customer service. So 5 star customer service 1 star hair = 3 star average! -

A great salon near Boulangerie/Bay Bread on Pine Street. Tuula (flies in from NY every 6 weeks) cuts my hair and is great, but Addison is too. Their colorists are good. A good business to patronize.

I went here based off of some pretty positive yelps. And my experience lived up to every expectation! I chopped 11 inches off of my hair for Locks of Love and although this was scary, I was not disappointed with the result. Carmen was amazing!

I've been seeing Addison since high school, when he was still with Architects & Heroes. His haircuts are carefully crafted with total skill and precision. The best part of all, your hair will grow back evenly and nicely, extending the longevity of the cut. His team of fabulous hair colorists does wonders.

San Jose, CA
I moved to South Bay area, and people mentioned that Tagerine in Downtown San Jose is good, so I went to try it. At that place, they seperated the hairstylist by ranking, so the best ones are more expensive, and I chose the best. I have thick hair, and the girl layered my hair to death (and short in the back), so the top of my head looked poofy and weird. I was really disappointed since most pple in San Jose recommended that place, and all I wanted was a simple haircut that 's lightly layered.
Later I found Addison Hair salon when I was shopping at Shu Uemura. They recommended that I try going there and get a haircut with Addison. Since Addision was booked, I ended up getting a haircut with Carmen. She was wonderful. She's so friendly and sweet and made my hair look great. I didn't want anything fancy, just something that will suit me and easy to take care of. (I don't like to blow dry or use styling products on my hair). I was very happy with this place, and planning on going back again soon. -

Addison salon is fantastic! I've never walked out of this place upset after a haircut. In fact a couple years ago my stylist, Carmen, cut my hair and I seemed slightly dissatisfied (I was going from long hair to very short) she called me later that day and told me that if I didn't like my cut I could come back in and she would work with me more free of charge. I declined, because after going home and looking in the mirror I was just in shock for losing my long hair, but I had gained the cutest bob ever! That's great service.
I've always gotten great haircuts and tons of compliments afterwards. It is expensive, but I justify the price for the professional haircut that literally looks good for more than 6 months after, and the excellent atmosphere and customer service. Don't waste your time at other salons, this one is truly amazing! -

Angel. Great ok? 5 stars. I love it when I don't have to tell someone what to do or how to do it. Doesn't happen so very often. BUT - it was GREAT.... No downside.

Carmen is everything you would expect from a stylist. She did a great job on my hair today.
What I appreciated the most is that for the hour she spent cutting my hair, she focused on my hair and nothing else. She may have glanced over at the person next to me once, but other than that, she concentrated on giving me what I had asked for.
She didn't rush right into cutting my hair, spending several minutes discussing what I wanted and what she thought looked best for me.
It's within walking distance from home. And if you happen to get there early, you can always grab a chocolate croissant and small coffee next door at La Boulangerie or shop for eye shadow at Shu Uemura.
Thanks Carmen. See you in 2 months. -

I went to Addison Salon after seeing all the positive reviews on Yelp, and I could not have been more disappointed. If you have long, fine hair, DO NOT see Angel for a haircut. She gave me the most shapeless, frustrating haircut I have ever received, and I have been to many many salons in my lifetime. $80 I will never get back.

I have been going to Carmen for about five years now. My facialist had recommended her highly, and I respect her opinion. I am more than delighted. Carmen is an outstanding hair cutter and stylist. She listens to what you say, but she also makes recommendations based on her experience. She will still do what you want, but she always knows best, and I have learned to trust her completely. She spends an hour cutting my hair, and takes a look at every strand. My haircut lasts longer than it ever did because of her care and thoroughness.
Carmen is also a lovely gracious woman who stays calm, and really enjoys her work.
She is also accommodating. I had surgery, and it was uncomfortable to walk up to the second floor, where her station is situated. She graciously moved everything to a downstairs station. I really appreciated it.
I also think that she offers an excellent value. Let's face it--haircuts are expensive, but Carmen's cuts are worth the money.
The salon is charming, clean, and the receptionist--Sam--is helpful and gracious.
PS. My husband also sees Carmen, and she makes the most out of his thinning hair. -
