Review from Nathanael L.
San Diego, CA
Without a doubt, this has to be the best dining experience in all of San Diego. It lived up to all expectations of it's 5-star/5-diamond ratings. After being greeted at the entry gate, we traveled onto the private hotel road outlined with calming trees and views of the golf course. We pulled into the parking lot and a man in a suit scurried over to open the door for the lady and handed me a claim check. There were three employees at the front desk, waiting to greet us and take us to our seats.
We entered the main dining room where I rediscovered the meaning of exclusivity. My first thought was this dining room looked like a place for a secret society to dine and discuss their next round of activities. We were finally seated in a spacious booth overlooking the hotel's golf course. Looking around, other tables had little stools to place their purses and bags. Their wine list was as thick as a textbook and was categorized by regions. One of the waiters immediately filled our glasses with Voss water. We had a few cocktails to start the meal. One cocktail that stood out was the Parisian, which had gin with an elder flower liqueur, giving a lot of nice floral notes. Prior to the meal, our waiter also dropped off a card signed by the chef for our special occasion.
We had the four-course meal which was exquisite. The dishes that stood out were the bouillabaisse with fried risotto balls and the coffee rubbed canard. The bouillabaisse had so many layers of flavor from the calamari to the chorizo to the risotto balls. The duck had a nice layer of fat and was prepared medium rare, absolutely perfect. The sommelier prepared a very unique non-alcoholic pairing for the duck consisting of rhubarb, mixed berries, vanilla, and nutmeg. In between each dish, we were served small bites from the chef, so the waiters were constantly changing out the flatware. There were as many waiters as there were diners. These servers made sure we were all taken care of and that the evening remained special.
As we walked out, we were handed shortbread for the next morning and our car was already waiting for us. The coordination among the staff is incredible and the high ratings for the restaurant are well-deserved. The overall bill came out around $400, but it was definitely worth it. -

Disclaimer: I'm not going to try to be some pompous food critic with this review because in reality I just have an expensive mouth to feed with a penchant for delectable food. I'm also an incredibly dorky Yelper, but that's beside the point.
As Southern California's only Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond restaurant, you can't really expect anything, but the best from Addison. The fact that Addison's Wine Director, Jesse Rodriguez and Chef de Cuisine, Anthony Secviar have had previous stints at The French Laundry only reiterates that expectation.
However..
While Addison is the epitome of fine dining in San Diego and for San Diego's standards could possibly be considered the best, it is a notch below other fine dining restaurants in world-class food cities.
Service:
Spectacular and annoyingly perfect.
+ I wanted to surprise my main squeeze for his birthday and couldn't think of a better place to celebrate other than Addison. (Aren't I just the greatest? :P) Naturally, I had special requests for our dinner, which Addison took care of effortlessly. They even called me back 2 days prior to confirm that we would be seated at a table I specifically asked for.
+ Once seated, the waiter handed the birthday boy a handwritten birthday card on a -wait for it..- silver platter. Oh, Addison, you so fancy.
+ Synchronized service. It was entertaining to watch the staff move effortlessly and in sync as they presented us each dish. A thorough explanation was given for each and any questions we had were eloquently answered.
+ You're waited on hand and foot at Addison: 1) You're personally escorted to the bathroom. 2) Your purse has its own seat. 3) You're referred to as Mr. or Ms. [insert last name here]. 4) You're discreetly checked on to make sure you have everything you need. 5) Your glass of water (in Riedel glassware) is constantly refilled. I could honestly name 10 more examples but that would just be overkill. ;)
Food & Wine:
Frou-frou food done (almost) right in San Diego.
+ Our 4 hour, six-course dinner was amazing; however, there were a few missteps, most notably during the final savory course. This is what ultimately made me decide to drop Addison down to 4 stars. In terms of complexity and creativity, our meal at Addison lacked that oomph to take it to the next level. And at this price point, this should be the norm. Favorite courses: Scallops topped with Uni/Caviar; Salmon; Foie Gras Pot De Crème.
+ Opted to purchase a bottle of 2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape instead of the wine pairing. The wine was delicious and paired well with our savory dishes. Unexpectedly, we were given free pours of a 1981 Dr. Loosen Riesling and Peach Lambic to go with our dessert. Smooth touch.
Yes, this experience was a pretty penny, but at least my man candy thoroughly enjoyed it and that's really all that matters. I would recommend Addison if you're looking to go all out to celebrate a special occasion. 4 splendid stars. -
Review from Brian K.
Undoubtedly and unabashedly, San Diego's best overall dining experience. Going from San Diego's sandals-and-shorts (shirts optional) culture to a true culinary performance is a catepillar-to-butterfly transformation captured beautifully by Addison.
Old-world elegance + sensory-stimulating frou-frou portions-meant-for-elves that actually gets you thinking about food as chemistry and art = Addison.
"Service is top notch" is an understatement. They truly go above-and-beyond to create a worry-free dining experience. Addison is a blend of Southern Hospitality and nouveau dining. Your purse even gets a seat here, ladies (and men, if that's your kind of thing).
The drawback of Addison's prix-fixe and tasting-menu only options is its main appeal. Sit back, relax, and let them do all the work. The have three prix-fixe options - the 3, 4, and 6. The tasting menu has 8 courses. We chose the 6 and from start-to-finish, dinner was 4 hours. I've never had a 4-hour dinner. I was lucky enough to be treated here by my gf for my birthday as a surprise.
Wine service is nothing short of spectacular. E.g 1981 Dr. Loosen and Peach Lambic paired with white mousse. They'll get you that perfect bottle whether it's a $40 stainless steel white or a $13,000 Petrus ('82).
Addison makes the service and dining experience at Michelin-starred restaurants look like it's amateur hour at these over-hyped celebrity chef joints. Addison is superior and quite possibly the best overall dining experience I've had. The food is wonderful but what seals the deal is the dining experience.
You get out of the car, they already know your name.
You sit down, the servers all your know name.
Once you're done, there's an assistant with your coat helping you put it on.
Shortbread is wrapped for you to enjoy the next morning.
You step outside, your car is waiting.
It's that kind of place.
Chef's philosophy: "I am driven not by trends, but by the history of food. My emphasis is on mastering simplicity, with a keen focus on taste and technique." - THIS statement is echoed all throughout your dining and service experience.
Life is short. Very short. Come check out Addison.Listed in: Wow

Ok. This place has very good food. We had the six course meal. Over a couple of hours we had a variety of dishes which we all enjoyed, except for raisins and beets. But the shrimp was amazing. Time flies by fast, and the overall experience of a multi course meal is very satisfying.
Now the service is extremely formal. We prefer more personality, in fact that is our only complaint. -
Review from Debbie O.
This was such a special treat! My boyfriend and I came here on our fifth anniversary and were treated like royalty. The restaurant is part of a resort with a beautiful golf course. Even though we didn't get to take pictures outside, inside the restaurant was just as magnificent. The architecture is beautiful; arches are everywhere and large doors with very detailed artwork welcome you into the restaurant. We were seated immediately, but we told our server we wanted to take some pictures around the restaurant, and they were very understanding. I LOVE how they put us in the booth seats. It's extremely spacious and felt very private even though you are still in the middle of the restaurant. My boyfriend and I decided on the ten course menu for $225 per person.
The 10 course menu includes the amuse bouche, 6 appetizer/main courses, an artisan cheese course, 3 dessert courses, a peppermint cake pop, and shortbread to take home. The amuse bouche was quite the appetite opener. It was like a lemon vinegar drink, served in a small bowl, with a few dabs of oil on fresh raspberries. I wasn't sure if it was meant to be finished, but I certainly scooped up every last drop of it. First course was the Seabass Ceviche in a cucumber, coriander and thai green curry sauce. Thin slices of cucumber covered the succulent seabass that was swimming in a foamy green curry soup. The soup was more translucent than milky, but tasted amazingly along with the seabass.
2nd course was the Langoustine "A La Robuchon" with caviar, parsley and vermouth. It was presented like a very delicate and high class piece of shrimp tempura, but it tasted ten times better than any ordinary fried shrimp. The texture of the prawn was so tender and juicy, and all the flavor was wrapped so exquisitely into the dough. On top of the fried prawn was a small dollop of caviar decorated with parsley and vermouth as a dressing.
3rd course was the Wild Salmon and Seaweed with uni, celery and dashi. What I love about fine dining is that every dish is presented so carefully and artistically. The plate truly looked like a painting; on top of the long strand of salmon was first a dollop of uni, then below that a few pieces of seaweed, and finally some celery and daikon all in a dashi broth. Yes, it tasted as beautifully as it was presented. The salmon was tender and moist.
4th course was the Fall Mushroom Velouté with a coddled farm egg and parmesan. The presentation was a foamy broth; one side was white while the other side was brown and the two seemed to mix in a swirl at the middle. The farm egg was smack in the center and perfectly cooked so that the yolk was just the right amount of runny. You could really taste the flavors of the wild mushrooms in the broth; it was light but flavorful.
5th course was the Poulard Tortellini with black truffles. These came with the largest pieces of black truffles I have ever eaten. Two large slices that looked as big as tortilla chips alongside three tortellini and a few thin slices of parmesan. Again, everything on the plate looked like it was carefully placed to a T, and you could tell they wanted every bite to consist of truffle, parmesan, and tortellini. I completely forgot I was eating chicken because the meat just melted in your mouth.
6th course was the Duck with port wine and garlic bread. By this time, my stomach was stuffed to the max, but there was no way I was going to leave anything behind. This course came in a very clean presentation. The plate was mostly white; the only things on it were the piece of duck in the middle with a slice of garlic bread to the left and a tiny puddle of port wine with what looked like a sweet bechamel sauce on top to the right. It also came with a small glass with two layers: one a milky jello and on top a rich port wine reduction. I don't remember if our server taught us how to eat this, but I was sure any combination would have sufficed. I took a bite of the duck with the sauce on the right and then a scoop of the reduction right after. Something about the gamey taste of duck with a sweet port wine reduction pairs so perfectly. I've had it before a bunch of times, but Chef Bradley took it to another level for me with this dish. What a beautiful way to end the savory part of the culinary journey. Delicious.
The 7th course was the Artisan Cheese plate. This was probably the most underwhelming because I had high expectations. Cheese is one of the most important parts of a fine dining experience for me, but this was just OK. Though the quality was superb, there were very few choices on the plate.
Lastly came three dessert courses. Since I'm nearing the limit, I won't elaborate. Felt a bit anti-climatic. I was really hoping for something fantastic but the chocolate cake was average, and nothing was extraordinary. The peppermint cake pop was way to sweet. Overall, superb service, intimate ambiance, and delicious food. I still give it 5 stars because I dined like a queen. -

When my husband made a reservation, the hostess said, "Has your toddler been to a fine dining restaurant before?" in a lofty voice. My husband replied, Yes she has! To several Michelin starred restaurants, in fact! We are foodies and therefore must take our baby with us. When we arrived, they practically acted like she was not there, because they were not very attentive to her, although they had prepared a high chair for her. They were not used to babies, which, well, was to be expected.
But on to the food. We had the 6 course tasting menu. While the ingredients were definitely fresh, the flavors and textures did not meld together in interesting, eye-opening ways, and in fact, sometimes were strange and awkward.
Before presenting us with the wine menu, they introduced us to champagne. We were shocked at the final bill, but again, this was to be expected.
Anyway, we've experienced better tasting menus, and for a better value, and in the end much preferred the food at Amaya, which is on the same hotel property. -

I knew I should've finished this review when it was fresh in mind, but at least i can give an idea of what we had an enjoyed. Though it was months ago, i can tell you i still remember thinking it is the best FINE DINING experience in San Diego. If you love Top Chef, you'll love this special DINING EXPERIENCE.
It was a formal 4 course meal, and they offered little tasters or palate-cleansers in between that were not necessarily spelled out on the menu. Here was the brain dump of what i drafted that night... isn't a pretty review, but here goes:
Grape cranberry acidic palate cleanser, a delicious fresh-baked lemon breadstick, brioche with fresh butter, a little lychee sorbet in between courses, cheese puff
scallop, langostine, coddled egg, pote de creme foie gras, salmon med rare, kobe short rib, torte choc, pistacio sour cherry dessert...
JUST GO and see for yourself. If you love food and the experience of dining, you won't be sorry. -

My wife and I visited Addison on Saturday night for our third anniversary. We ordered the 6 course tasting menu.
Flash forward eight hours to the middle of the night and boom...my wife woke up in the middle of the night with food poisoning. Since that night, she's been dealing with an upset stomach.
Food: 1/5
Leaving aside my wife's upset stomach, nothing that we ate was that incredible. With each passing dish, my excitement crested, and crashed once I took my first bite. It was as if the chef was just missing the mark.
I also couldn't help but notice that none of the ingredients that they served were what I would consider premier ingredients. Kumomoto oysters, sweetbreads, foie grois, and cheeses that we've tasted before? When I go to a restaurant with as many accolades as Addison, I expect to be wowed. Surprise me by offering me an ingredient that no other fine dining restaurant is serving, or serve an ingredient in a way that absolutely blows me away.
Service: 3/5
The service was good, although one of the waiters who handled our table kept using the phrase "In this case" over and over and over. For example, "In this case, we have sweetbreads served with in this case a summer leek puree, in this case served with a dashi broth". Really, really awkward.
Another awkward element to the service is the presentation of each dish. It is really awkward to have to engage the waiter/waitress every time a dish is presented. If you are engaged in conversation, the presentation of the dish interrupts you. -

Addison is the ultimate dining experience. Despite the formal setting, the staff was neither pompous nor pretentious. The most down-to-earth Captain and Somellier I've ever met. We went with the 6-course tasting menu with wine parings that was divine! The additional bread services, small bites, and palate cleansers were a nice treat. After 4 hours, we left happy and satiated.
If you have the means or have a chance to dine without caring about the cost...Go to Addison's! -

A Five Star Restaurant for our Five Year Wedding Anniversary
Unless you're born into a royal family or have old money, most of us will never know what being fed with a golden spoon is like or how much of a treat it is to have a personal wait staff at your beck and call, each anticipating your every need and fulfilling your every culinary desire. Here at Addison, while you won't be eating off of gold plated china or utensils, it's right up there. For us common folk, this is as close to being treated like royalty as we get.
To say that the experience here at the Addison is a culinary journey like no other is frankly an understatement. In a world when everyone is a "foodie", it's not hard to find a celebrity chef restaurant nearby where many will flock to for that ultimate culinary experience. I've been fortunate enough to visit many around the world that without a doubt got my taste buds dancing the jig--but none were truly the 5 star dining experience that I found here at Addison.
Once you arrive, you enter a circular driveway lined with Ferrari's, Bentley's & the like. I might as well have been driving a Japanese made vehicle because my German made car all of a sudden felt inferior. Nevertheless, as our doors opened, a hand was already extended waiting to help us out of the car. The valet attendant asked us our name, which we thought was to identify the car but then he proceeded to escort us to the front desk where another gal was standing. I heard him quietly mention, "Mr & and Mrs. "V" are here for their 8:30 dinner reservation". Eyebrow raised...hmmm subtle...impressive.
We were escorted to our table and were immediately handed white lint free napkins from another employee with thongs. Our napkin was never touched. For you germaphobes out there, you would appreciate this. A small foot stool type piece was also placed next to my chair to place my bag on. This was a nice touch!
We were then given what seemed to be 100 page wine Bible with wine listings. We were told this had over 3800 selections of various wines from around the world. And if I have my facts straight, they have nearly 6k bottles of wine in that cellar alone. There are apparently others on property which are the same size, if not larger. I didn't select a drink from the wine menu but instead selected a signature drink, the Belini. It had champagne, pear & a hint of lavender. I was concerned the lavender would be overpowering and make my drink taste like soap, but this was not the case. It was well balanced & very refreshing. And at $22, it better be.
Nicholas, our waiter was adorable. Not in the sense of me wanting to pinch his cheeks and baby-talk with the guy, but adorable in how he presented himself. His grace when he approached his table; the proud grin he wore on his face when he presented each of the courses; how he meticulously placed items on the table with such purpose. My husband even pulled the candle centerpiece closer to us to get a better look at it, only to have Nicholas come over and place it gently back into place. Nicholas went on to explain that Chef & his wife found these pieces abroad while traveling and each are hand blown pieces of art. As we looked around at each of the tables, we could then see how unique each piece was. Stunning!
For our entrees, we opted for the Five Course Meal but my husband selected each of his items since he's more particular with his meals. I, on the other hand chose to have the chef prepare each dish for me without me knowing what I was getting. If you don't have any dietary restrictions or allergies, I would highly recommend going this route. It had me on the edge of my seat each time the servers swarmed our table to deliver our meals.
I'm pretty sure that I'll run out of room if I went on to explain each dish so I'll let the pictures show what a true piece of art each course was. I was not disappointed in any of the "surprise" dishes. A culinary experience like no other!
The service & attention to detail at The Grand Del Mar is nothing short of mind blowing and spectacular. The staff here anticipated your every need & was one step ahead of you all night. When you got up to use the restroom, you were personally escorted to & from. Upon your return, you're handed a clean napkin...again, with sterling silver thongs. Water glasses were refilled with ease as the server seemed to refill it from 6 ft away without a drop of water on the table. I mean, everything was orchestrated like a symphony. It was the ultimate dining experience and worth every single Benjamin.
Just when we thought they couldn't impress us any more, as we were exiting the building, we didn't even have to request for our car to be brought up, the car was running with the doors already ajar waiting for us. Impressive!
Thank you Addison and Chef Bradley for making our 5 year anniversary one that we will remember for a lifetime. We will be back, for sure. Soon...real soon!Listed in: Acclaimed Restaurants

FOOD POISONING!! Ugh...
Went with my family for my Bday. I had such high expectations of Addison given it's awards and accolades. I've eaten at several Michelin 2-3 star restaurants, and I must say the food here was disappointing in comparison. Ordinary ingredients (sashimi, duck, salmon, shellfish) without anything exotic... and an insane price-point: $225 pp + $150 for wine pairings (using low-mid priced wines). $1400 for 3 people!!!
Service was impeccable and synchronized, and they make you feel like a VIP.
The room was gorgeous and enormous but needs more floral arrangements.
The food however was disappointing. It tasted good and was well-cooked, but was ordinary.
But... to make matters worse... all 3 of us awoke in the middle of the night with severe stomach cramps and diarrhea. One of us began vomiting profusely a little while later. Ugh...
Guess we won't be back...
I think the price point is insane however! They could lower the price a little and leave the gold leaf off of the food...1 Previous Review: Show all »

Service:
Wow, Do they really bring four waiters to your table to serve 2 people (yes they do).
Service is the name of the game at this "ultimate" of fine dining restaurant.
You will feel like royalty.
We had a marvelous evening of pampering, wining and dining. No rush, just relax and eat slowly, drink heartily and have pleasant conversation of wonderful-days-gone-by for several hours.
Food:
The food was chef-surprise, really, they don't tell you what is on the menu. They just bring it out... for hours.
The food was given in tiny portions, so you dont eat too much.
I have some food sensitivities, and they were considerate and did not use any of those foods in our dishes.
In fact, I was a little disappointed at the food choices. The quality of foods were so-so. What I mean is, the food itself was ripe, etc. It just wasn't really expensive choices of food. They were rather mid-level food, but the food was prepared very very well. And the chef was clever in his combinations of flavors and textures.
Ambiance:
Although the china and silver were non-descript and not special at all, the ambiance was very pleasant. It was completely over-shadowed by the excellent service.
What it costs:
We ordered drinks before dinner (reasonable prices here) and then Addison's most expensive (chef-surprise) dinner, with pairing. Our bill for two, with tip, about $700. It may have been more? Anyway, if you like a fine-dining experience, this is really a fun place. -

Good thing there is an "In and Out Burger" about 5 miles away.... You will leave here not only starving, but out a few hundred bucks.
Before you get all bothered, I am a "foodie" and even attend Aspen Food and Wine every year.
The service was great, but the menu was limited. As for portions, I cannot even comment on if the food was good or not....the salmon was the size of a fish stick. Very disappointing. In fact, I was embarrassed as I took a client bs his wife to dinner. We are still laughing about this....good thing they have a sense of humor. -

Freakin A. Me and the wife got all suited up ready to do battle with this culinary experience. We usually don't roll this deep but I had been reading about Chef Bradley and Jesse Rodriguez in the Wine Spectator and thought my wife's birthday would be the perfect time to check this place out.
As we walked in the host took my bottle I brought with me and took it to the sommelier station to decant it for us. Wethen walked into this beautiful place to a awesome waiting area where we had these delicious walnuts and Champagne.
When we were lead into dining area, I had this weird feeling that this was something special and unique. We saw the menu and looked at the prices...Y'ouch! but hey, we thought when are we coming back here? not anytime soon, so we went for the 10 course meal.
Holy smokes, what an adventure. there were points were the mixture of hapiness and acidity almost yanked a tear from my eye.
This is a special place. This is a place that you come to challenge your palette with new flavor combos, and to marvel at the level of excellent service. If I was a wealthy cat I still wouldn't come here weekly because its like that one song on the radio you love so much that you avoid it so it will never be burned out -

Addison is incredible.
We celebrated our 10 year anniversary last weekend with the best meal and best service of our lives.
It is impossible to describe everything that was memorable but here are highlights:
We splurged for the 10 course tasting meal and enjoyed 3.5 hours of delicious tidbits. It you're going to eat at this special of a place - let them loose.
The seafood selections sent were the best we've ever had. I kept cutting up my scallop smaller and smaller in an effort to enjoy it longer over more bites.
When do you ever hear "this is your first bread course tonight..."
Servers who are orchestrating a balet the coordination of service was so impeccable.
I felt guiltly only leaving a 20% tip - like we weren't even showing enough appreciation for how much fun we'd had and how well we'd been served.
Quite simply - we loved the food, were wow'd by the service and look forward to returning over the years for special occasions. -

Wow, the experience here was one of a kind! I felt like royalty when I came here for dinner. I have never been treated so well and the attention to detail is precise! The service from the entire staff was so perfect that I almost felt they were secretly robots! I never thought I could have such a perfect experience in my life!
We arrived via hotel car since we were staying at the Grand Del Mar. I am glad I dressed up for this! I went shopping so I could buy a nice black dress to wear. The restaurant itself is very big and spacious. We passed a gorgeous bar that I definitely have to return for. The front desk welcomed us and seated us. Then the magical service began... The server recommended a nice french bordeaux and spoke about the wine itself as if he were from France and made the wine itself! It was quite impressive. The wine itself was very light but delightful.
We decided to go with the chef's 6-course tasting menu. We also added their special rare white truffle course for $75 per person. They carefully layed a white napkin with tongs on our laps. Then they preceeded to give us a fresh pair of utensils for each course. We loved the surprise of each course! Each course was so tiny and delicate that we were afraid we'd never be satisfied but surprisingly we were! There were 3 bread servings throughout the night. My favorite being the brioche with fresh butter/cheese. The courses and time flew by~Amuse bouche, bread servings, palate cleansers, many extra courses were given. In all, it felt like a 12-course meal! I cannot remember all of the courses but some of the courses were: Pickled cranberries, Endive salad, Fresh baby scallops in a broth that tasted like the sea, the decadent white truffle dish that was to die for, the fatty carmelized duck with licorice sauce (surprisingly decadent and the licorice and duck went well together), the cheese and cracker course, and the brilliant chocolate ganache dessert with gold flakes and a wonderful coffee gelato. The surprise at the end, a decadent white chocolate covered mint lollipop with sugar sprinkles. Not too sweet but a great way to finish the dinner. We each got a latte to perk us up. It came with a lovely heart on it. For the 7 courses, we were there from 9pm-just after 11pm. Expect some time between each course, it fills you up and helps you to slowly savor each dish.
We were sad to part from this gorgeous restaurant, but we left with another gift from the chef, a cookie to go, to eat as a midnight snack! We were tired and full after the meal so we forgoed the nightclub below. We will have to check it out next time as well as their bar. Perhaps the 10-course next time? It will be quite the challenge as the 6-course left me with food coma. -

In his career, Chef William Bradley was nominated for a James Beard "Rising Star Chef" for three years in a row and was a semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation award in 2010. His cuisine is simplistic yet sophisticated and artfully crafted to focus on flavors and textures. His talent and creativity earned Addison the recognition of being the only Southern California restaurant to receive Forbes Five Star and AAA Five Diamond award in 2009 & 2010.
As a member of Relais & Chateaux, striving to impress a unique and memorable experience, Addison pairs the highest quality of service with cuisine that awakens the palate.
Expectantly, the service was nothing short of phenomenal. The wait staff was attentive, efficient and welcoming. Addison's attention to detail was awe inspiring. From the starched and ironed linens, to the stool set by your side for personal belongings, segregation of every minute task to the escort available to lead you to the lavatories. Addison spoils its diners and who doesn't like to be spoiled?
Our sommelier, Jesse Rodriguez was friendly, knowledgeable and instrumental in suggesting our take home wine. In search for a wine comparable to the Hitching Post, Jesse suggested Kristi Lynn Pinot Noir "Sebastian" 2008. For our meal however, we chose the wine pairings which impeccably complemented the courses.
1st COURSE:
Japanese hiramasa, pickled radish, cucumber & yuzu - texturally perfect and the citrus contrast elevated the hiramasa
Schlob Gobelsburg, Gruner Veltliner, "Allerheriligenstiftung," Kamptal Austria 2009
2nd COURSE:
~ Addison had just received a shipment of truffles so we opted for this course to be topped with shaved truffles at an additional charge ~
Baked sablefish, dashi, uni and cremini mushrooms - this was not the entree I chose for my second course but I did steal a couple of bites and those couple of bites were amazingly good. The sablefish was tender and the accompaniments were not overpowering. The crunch factor of this dish was flavorful and alone, would be enough to satisfy a diner
Goat cheese risotto, caramelized garlic and smoked ham hock - a dish with textures and flavors that played well together
Left Coast, Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon 2005
3rd COURSE:
Lamb crepinettes, potatoes "crousillant" and black olive port syrup - the lamb was moist and well seasoned. The potatoes were creamy and the first thing to go on my plate. The entree proportion was mindful to leave room for the remaining three courses
Chateau Pibran, Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot, Pauillac, France 2006
4th COURSE:
Artisan cheese - there were two types of cheese in this course. One was soft and creamy while the other was sharp and dry. Both were delicious but, I most enjoyed the sharp tasting cheese
5th COURSE:
Apricot & wild berry confit, grand marnier "zabaglione" - this dessert left me desiring more
Michele Chiarlo, "Nivole," Moscato d' Asti, Piemonte, Italy 2007
6th COURSE:
Spiced fig mille-feuille, brown butter caramel and creme fraiche gelato - loved the hard and soft contrasts with prominent flavors. The only disappointment I had was in me in not finishing this dish. At this point, I was ready to burst
Kopke, Colheita, Portugal Douro 1997
At the end of this beautifully constructed meal, I had asked if they would give me a copy of their menu along with the wine pairings and to my pleasant surprise, I was given a chef signed menu especially typed to meet my request. Additionally, at the door waiting for me was my coat, my car and a special parting gift.
The price for this wonderful experience was unsurprisingly pricey (~$780) but it was worth every penny. No regrets. As a matter of fact, I found where I will be having my birthday dinner. -

For the sake of my time (and the readers) I'm not going to go into great details about this 3-star review, but Tatiana O's review on 3/19/2011 is about how I felt. We were both definitely disappointed in the food. The lamb meat we had was way too salty and a lot of the ingredients were overpowered.
The service here is 5-star quality though; hands down, and also the reason I gave it three stars instead of two. They were very attentive (except when we mentioned the horribly salty meat) and the sommelier, who's name I can't recall, was very knowledgeable and genuine.
Overall the three hours we spent there were enjoyable, mainly because of the company, the wine and ambiance; just not for the food or what we paid for it.
I do plan on going back and giving it another shot. -

I've got 2.5million frequent flier miles, and over 20 years have eaten everywhere in the world. Addison was as good as it gets.
The service was perfect. Period.
The food was excellent, in quality and quantity (none of this "Texas-sized" stuff), with perfect punctuation (amuse bouche, breads, etc.) and timing.
This was as splendid a meal as I can ever remember. -

We arrived via shuttle from the hotel and was immediately greeted with a sincere welcome. The ambiance was tasteful and beautiful. We were offered a drink at the bar, but it being empty we decided to just go to our table. The dining room was quiet, and a bit empty, too, but it was a Thursday evening.
I decided to order a dirty martini and my fiancee an Americano. My drink was one of the BEST I ever had, and I was surprised they knew exactly what he wanted as a lot of restaurants we have been to don't quite know how to make it. So good he ordered two.
From start to service everything was delicious. They started us with a complimentary appetizer, which was amazing, although not sure what it was. We ordered the six course meal and the presentation and flavor of each course was unique and tasty. Our waiter was studying to be a sommelier so lucky for us we discussed our favorite wines. He was professional, knowledgeable and charming.
Each course was a surprise (they ask if you have any allergies or preferences) so I can't quite tell you what we got, but I have added a few pictures. We were told what each dish was as it was being served (oh, they have 2 people serving so we get our dishes at the same time), and would try to guess what the ingredients were. The serving sizes were small, but after a few bites I was satisfied and didn't need to finish each course.
Dessert and drinks: I wasn't sure what to order as an after dinner drink so they poured me little tasters until I was satisfied. AND they also gave us a complimentary after dessert dessert! AMAZING! Overall, this is a special, fine dining experience that won't leave you stuffed, but that is memorable. -

While the food is impecable there are two major issues. First and foremost, my husband and I got food poisoning after eating there on my birthday in December. Two hours after dinner it hit us both. Absolutely unexcusable for such a nice restaurant. Also, we ate there in October, and the December menu (the 4-course prix fixe menu) was almost exactly the same - I thought it was supposed to be seasonal. Anyway, it doesn't matter, we won't be eating there again.

The four course is ~ $96 which I thought was a bargain. In addition to the 4 courses they snook in an amuse bouche, gelato palette cleanser, after dinner handmade mint and breakfast box / doggy bag. $40 corkage is a little excessive. Havin said that I think but their wine list is very impressive and it is't really necessary to bring your own. They also have terrific cocktails and beers at the bar. I won't yarn on about the food but the menu was well thought out, food was presented beautifully and everything tasted so complex without being too rich or heavy.
My one gripe is that the atmosphere is a little too formal for my tastes, I think it could retain it's integrity if it dumbed it down a little. It feels more European / East Coast formal. I typically prefer the laid baclk SoCal approach. The urgency of the wait staff although commendable is a little excessive. For example, I like that they pull the seat out for my wife but I don't really need help getting my tukkas onto a chair. You definitely leave here feeling well looked after.
In summary though, I thought that the four-course was worth every penny. -

For those of you that want the point without going through my review here it is:
- Obvious 5-star service.
- Exceptional depth of flavor in food.
- Award winning wine collection.
- A little pricey, but average for fine dining.
OVERVIEW
The Addison receives two different types of guests, those that roll in money and those that would like to. For this reason the dress-code is generally fancy though you will see some people in plainer clothes. I am the later of the two, but I blend-in well.
The food, service, ambiance and overall experience are on a level not often found. There are very few places in the nation that have received some of the recognition as the Addison and for this reason my wife decided it was worth a try for my birthday dinner. We had previously been to the Amaya (at the Grand Del Mar as well). If you cannot appreciate fin dining and the experience as a whole, don't waste your time or money.
The Grand del Mar has a many dining options but the Addison has captivated the heart of food lovers. Near the Grand Gold Club, Addison, championed by Chef William Bradley, is known for its skilled approach to cooking. They use seasonal ingredients and food from local farmers markets to create splendid, contemporary French cuisine.
If you don't take my word that the food is on a whole new level, then take a look at their awards. Addison is a AAA Five Diamond winner, has five stars from Forbes and is the winner of the Wine Spectator Grand Award. This type of praise does not come easy and are not very common either. Addison is the only restaurant in San Diego to hold 5 stars+diamonds while it is the only one in Southern California to receive all three.
THE EXPERIENCE
You have not really experienced food until you have lent your taste buds to Chef Bradley's cuisine for the evening. You are immediately overwhelmed with an exceptional level of service and decor backed by the complex taste of food offered on the menu. This combination provides for an exceptional ambiance that extends beyond a simple trip to satisfy your hunger. The contemporary French cuisine features intense flavors and simple, yet masterfully combined ingredients.
Throughout the night I was impressed by the level of detail the wait staff attends to your needs. This is shown by covering stains on the tablecloth, holding back the tablecloth when you are seated and guidance to the restroom (if needed). This politeness was extended though the night.
When food is brought to the table, multiple servers place the food on your table in unison for all parties. No more, "here is yours, the other is on the way." To top it all off, there is a detailed explanation for everything you order, before you eat it. Forget the days of "whats that?"
Before the amazing night ended, my wife and I were even treated with a kitchen tour. Not only are the decor and staff on a new level, the kitchen setup is top-of-the-line. There are separate preparation areas for different food groups and a single person to deliver their specialty for all guests. If you are into wine they also have a Sommelier on staff to provide excellent food pairing options.
FOOD TIME
For this evening, my wife and I deiced on a Three-Course Menu, $80pp, Moscato Wine, a Cheese plate and finished with Cappachino. We did not do a full dinner with pairing. Each portion of our meal was followed by an amuse-bouche that may as well have been a free desert. I may sounds like I am praising them too much, but my experience was so amazing I would like to eat here at least twice a year.
My wife started with the Alaskan King Crab that includes baby romaine and sauce vermouth for extra flavor. For her second course she ordered the Braised "Le Boeuf Taquine" that is served with onion mille-feuille and prosciutto di san daniele. For her desert she treated herself to Pommes Doree that is crystallized ginger ice cream and date caramel. I do not recall how her food tasted as I was too focused on my own but she took small bites to savor the exceptional taste.
I started with the Foie Gras Deux Facon that was plated with bing cherries, pistachios and amaretto. This provided for a bitter and sweet mixture that perfectly counteracted each other. This combination only intensified the deep textured taste of the duck/goose liver. The flavor was very rich, buttery, and delicate.
My second course was Lamb Rack Persille plated with endive and aged balsamic to enhance flavor. The subtle, rich meat was so tender you could cut it with a spoon. This is the most tender meat I have ever been served and was cooked/seasoned perfectly.
To finish the night I ordered the Panna Cotta that was served with crème fraîche, blackberries and passion fruit. I'll let you imagine how amazing that combination was.Listed in: Stay Classy

Food is good. But this place is pompous overpriced and snooty. I honestly have had better food for half the cost. And the attitude and snooty demeanor of the staff totally takes away from the fact that they do try to give a ultimate dining experience. My water was empty and my waiter made feel like We were lucky to be there. Food was not cooked to temperature we requested because. "chef Bradley" did not approve. They take service to a very high level. But forgot basics like full drinks, and putting customer first. Food is good but nothing you can not get any 4-5 star place for half the cost. Will never return.

The quality of service is surpassed only by the excellence of their food.
WARNING: DO NOT go to Addison if you do not appreciate fine-dining, GREAT service, or good food (and price fix menus).
Service: Utterly professional, in the most traditional sense. I mean that the service of the restaurant is how it should be: the hostess greets you, and thanks you when you leave, the servers are very knowledgeable about the menu and only approach the table when they should, the sommelier is the best in the business (and is by no means stuck up like most others I've met), and the bus boys always keep your glasses full and the dirty dishes cleared. The servers are interested in making your experience the best it can be.
Food: Incredible. They have a price fix menu that changes with the season (3-4 options for each course). I always order the four-course menu. They now offer a three-course, which is just not enough food if you ask me. Or there is the 7-course tasting of the chef's choice and I'll be sure to rate it when I have it. Back to the food, delicious. Be prepared, Chef Bradley prepares SAVORY dishes. Everything that kitchen has put out, I've thoroughly enjoyed. I've had the best braised short rib dish and mushroom dish of my life at Addison.
Ambiance: Exquisite. The architecture and choice of materials are beautiful. At first I was taken aback by all the marble (several colors, floors, walls, ceiling), along with the use of dark, rich woods, vertical stripes and arches and columns. But they all work together to create almost a majestic atmosphere. I love to go there just to sit at the table and look around. The building is a masterpiece.
Price: $100 pp 4-course. Now, I understand for many that is expensive. However, please think about the steak-house or "moderately" priced restaurant you have in mind instead of Addison. Now add up an appetizer, second course, entree and dessert. How much is it?? I would say you get what you pay for at Addison, but really, you get so much more.
Things to know: Free Valet. They give you a boxed caramel when you leave. They have a corkage fee - but also an award winning wine list. You really COULD NOT over dress, and I would suggest not wearing jeans - but I've worn them before. Cheese course is extra.
This is one of my top 5 favorite restaurants in the world. Anybody who is into fine-dining, or really GREAT food, you must try this place at least once!
I reserve it for special occasions, because it truly is a culinary treat ;) -

I was introduced to Addison's Saturday evening. I had some very, very good pinot noir from Oregon, but didn't have the time to have a meal. I'm looking forward to visiting sometime soon, because I have been hearing rave reviews by friends.
In addition to the fabulous menu, the ambience is incredible! This is truly one of the most beautiful venues in San Diego....is a must see and experience! -

This restaurant deserves more than 5 stars if I could give it more :) un-be-lievable. this restaurant is in the Grand Del Mar, which is absolutely stunning. As you arrive, the entry has a gorgeous seating area with a beautiful fireplace and a crackling fire...so romantic. you enter the restaurant, and "grand" does not even describe Addison. this restaurant is the most beautiful restaurant I have seen. So elegant and gorgeous, marble floors, floor-to-ceiling windows, and the service is absolutely top-notch. you feel like royalty, pretty much. bf and i had the MOST amazing meal. description of the meal is coming soon....

Had an insanely expensive, but totally worth it, dinner for Thanksgiving. Service was amazing as always, 2 to 4 people waiting on us at all times, never an empty glass, never an empty dish!
Super small portions but each filled with a total flavor explosion. Jesse matched perfect wines with each amazing course. There was a fabulous amuse bouche, buttered salmon, turkey roti, duck confit, mixed apple and raspberry sorbets, pumpkin tart, salted caramels, petite fours, rich cheeses and ridiculously irresistible breads.
If you can afford it, you've got to have this incredible dining experience. I'm constantly amazed and grateful to have Addison and its staff here in San Diego!1 Previous Review: Show all »

I haven't had a ton of fine-dining experiences as I'm not wealthy, but this was as good a meal as I've ever had with excellent service. Virtually everything I ate had layered, exciting flavors and was a new experience.
On the other hand, why does this place have to be at a golf course? When we arrived, it looked like we walked into a morgue (sorry for the overt ageism) and there was no excitement or buzz at all. Other than that, be prepared to pay big for a big experience. Delicious, and worth it for a special occasion. -

Everything about this place is absolutely amazing - food, wine, SERVICE, ambiance. For those curious about the price - I did the 10-course, with wine pairings selected for me, pre-dinner cocktail, post-dinner coffee. With tax and tip, the cost comes to $500.
Obviously you can spend less, but the tasting is kinda worth it... -

For most folks, this is definitely, I understand, a special occasion spot. It's pricey, sophisticated, and not a place I can get everyone to come along and enjoy. That said, this and Spread in North Park, I think, are the two best restaurants in all of San Diego. For foodies it is a must visit, and worth the occasional splurge. The wine list is joyfully dizzying, and the menu is happily unlike anything you'll find elsewhere in San Diego. I have dined here many times, now, and each visit has been equally spectacular. The prix fixe choice with the most options is a bit too much food, I have found, and I have a hearty appetite. San Diego deserves a wide array of cuisine choices, and I am so thankful that among the spectrum is Addison which raises the bar for me, and itself. A satisfying delight on all fronts.

The most amazing fine dining experience I have ever had! The service, the food, the ambiance - everything was top-notch!
My partner and I celebrated our first anniversary here over a year ago. It was just so exceptional, I had to rate it on Yelp! We enjoyed a 7-course meal with drink pairings. Although the portions do seem very tiny, by the end of the 7 courses, we were completely STUFFED. I couldn't even finish my chocolate dessert, and I'm the type to always have room for dessert. It was very expensive, but still a very fine way to celebrate a special occasion :)
I plan to visit again soon, Addison! -

We recently went back here and though the service was still what I would consider Michelin start worthy the food was not. I was highly disappointed. We have been here a handful of times, but had not been back in a few months. I do not know if Chef Bradley and the kitchen were just having an off night but the food was definitely not up to par. We simply had the four course menu with the cheese course and I must say that many of the ingredients were not shining in how they were presented. For example, the uni was hidden in a thai curry sauce and you could not taste the beautiful taste of the uni itself because the thai curry was overpowering. There was also quite a few fried items during the menu and all you could taste was the flavor of fried food. It was not pleasant. The food was just underwhelming, especially after the past experiences we have had.
For a restaurant that I have raved to friends in the past I was disappointed. Sadly, I would not put this on a Michelin ranking restaurant after this meal.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Recently went to Addison Restaurant and had one of the best eating experiences I've had in a while. I can't say that it was the food, the service, the wine or the company in and of themselves that made this place awesome, but it was the perfect combination of everything that made it for one of the most enjoyable dining experiences I've had in a while.
If you want to do a local weekend getaway in San Diego, I would suggest staying at the Grand Del Mar and having dinner at Addison. Or even just going to Addison (open to the public), and having a nice, special occasion diner there. I would definitely recommend reservations.
We ordered the four-course just because I feared the seven-course would take seven hours. I was right. The four-course did take about three hours. But actually, the food came at a good pace, and made the three hours fly by.
Now maybe I'm just ignorant or undignified, or maybe because I like eating food out of trucks, but, brace yourself, I thought this place was overall better than The French Laundry in Yountville. Now I'm going to get hate mail, but it's true!
FIRST COURSE:
HIM: JAPANESE HAMACHI - blood oranges, tangerines and crystallized ginger
HER:BABY SEA SCALLOPS - tomato confit, golden caviar and champagne emulsion
SECOND COURSE:
HIM: ALASKAN KING CRAB LEG - crispy shallots, curry and beurre d'isigny doux
HER: GOLDEN CHANTERELLE MUSHROOMS - garlic "croustillant" and white corn-truffle sauce
THIRD COURSE:
HIM: SPRING LAMB PERSILLÉ - burrata, black olives and lemon-arugula sala
HER: VEAL TENDERLOIN "GRILLÉ" - jus de cèpes and smoked potato purée
FOURTH COURSE:
HIM: MILLE-FEUILLE "CLASSIQUE" - candied caramel and crème fraîche
HER: PANNA COTTA - wild berry sorbet and lavender syrup
Every item on every plate was delicious. Between all these courses and the 5 amuse bouche, I was full and satisfied. Well, that with the glass of champagne, endless cups of water, and 1 glass of wine. All of the wait staff were very friendly and took the time to explain everything to you. I can't even remember what wine or champagne we had since I was already a little intoxicated by Course #2, but I know I had some sort of Syrah that they had recommended and I had a really nice rose for my Champagne starter.
It's not overly dressy (guys don't have to wear ties or jackets), but it nice enough where you can dress up if you want, or just go business casual-ish. If you just won the lottery or are just rolling in money, they have a private dining room that seats anywhere from 50-80 where you can have a lovely dinner for you and all your close friends.
It's a great experience and a great restaurant, but not for the faint-of-heart if you're worried about prices. You just grin and bear it and enjoy it. This is a place to take your mom for mother's day, your significant other for an anniversary, I'm not one to frequent fancy schmany places like these often, just because it's torture for me to sit through long, drawn-out meals, but I would definitely come back here again. -
Review from Lindsay S.
San Marcos, CA
After carefully choosing Addison for our anniversary dinner plans, I immediately had buyers remorse for the weeks leading up to the dinner. This was going to be one extravagant and expensive meal! Let me tell you right now, that buyers remorse ended IMMEDIATELY upon entering the restaurant, and after eating the delicacies on the 4 course (plus 5 amuse bouche) menu, this will actually be the first of hopefully many fine dining experiences!
The servers are so knowledgeable and teach you about the wine choices and about how they will compliment each dish. The wine pairings our server recommended were perfect, and were not at all the most expensive on the menu (or even close) We had several servers for just the two of us, and my wants were anticipated before I could think of them I was thrilled with the service. It definitely made the experience worth every penny. And that's even before the food.
The restaurant is absolutely beautiful and we had a wonderful view of the golf course and waterfall. The seating was plush and comfortable. We were given a card signed by the chef wishing us Happy Anniversary, which I thought was a nice touch. I had read in other reviews that we would get to meet the chef, but that didn't happen, which was slightly disappointing. But the rest of the service more than made up for that.
This was our first experience in fine dining, and we were not sure we would be satisfied with the small portions and the rare ingredients. We could not have been more wrong on both counts. The food was definitely fussy in presentation, but delicious and approachable. Keep in mind, these are very small French dishes, but the amounts were just enough to share and come home actually quite stuffed. We could not even finish the final after-dessert course.
In case you are interested, and going this summer, here is what we ordered:
Primier Choix
Baby Sea Scallops - PERFECT IN EVERY WAY
Artichokes "A La Barigouile" This was very different. A little salty for even me, who adds salt to all things, but interesting and quite fulfilling. Not sure I would order again as a first course because it was slightly heavy for me for a first course.
Deuxieme Choix
Alaskan King Crab 2 ways - OK, this was by far my favorite dish and one of two I would order again if I went back today. The crab and sauces were perfectly balanced. The crab salad with curry was a perfect compliment to the crab leg in a buttery sauce.
Caramelized Sablefish - The accompaniment of sweet onion mille-feuille was like nothing I had ever seen or tasted. I wish I could recreate it. The crunchy, caramel goodness, offset by the savory fish was perfect for my palate.
Main Course (I don't have the menu for these so no French, and not their real titles)
Duck with Fois Gras - I didn't have much of this dish , but my husband loved it. I wanted one taste of my husband's fois gras because I had not it before, but I did not at all like it. I will never order it. I'm sure it was perfectly cooked, but it does not at all suit my taste.
Lamb - I don't even really know how to describe this lamb. Suffice it to say, I did not share. The accompanying salad with fresh basil and cheese was so fresh and perfectly mixed with the lamb.
Dessert
The Caramel Dessert (sorry, again, not on the menu online) both of us got it, both of us could not believe what the overall deliciousness that was going on. It was the PERFECT end to the meal.
The 5 amuse bouches were also perfect and complimented our meal and dessert selections.
We are already planning to go back next year for our anniversary. It may be extravagant in terms of cost, but I can think of no better way to celebrate.
