16 reviews for Addison Improv Comedy Club
This is more of a review for the comedy show, Russell Peters and two other comedians before him.
The first guy was Indian and pretty funny and I liked his act.
The second guy was white and kinda sucked. He was clearly insecure b/c he kept saying, "I'm watching you this side for not laughing" or something like that. Plus he kept going back and forth with this white lady in the front as if it was a show just for her!
Finally Russell comes out and it was funny and good but not fantastic. I now realize exactly what it means by "improv" and it wasn't my style.
I have to first say, that the crowd was kinda lame. It was for a 6:30 show and we either had a few idiots in the crowd making stupid comments (thinking they were hot shit) or that stupid white woman in the very front married to an Indian and constantly bragging that she knew Indian jokes, culture, etc. Even Russell was like, "Okay, okay lady I got it you're married to an Indian guy"
The food of course was bad and overpriced but oh well.
We had decent seats and can see the comedians clearly so that wasn't a problem.
I don't think I'd like to go see another Improv though, I rather see a comedy show with skits and stuff.
Despite its high profile perch on the corner of Quorum and Belt Line, I'm guessing most folks (including myself) have driven by this place many times and nearly forgotten about this temple to laughs. After hitting up the club for two consecutive nights and seen the highs and lows, I'd recommend for a fun night out to see your favorite comedian.
Wednesday night we watched Comedy from the Dorkside, which admittedly had more lows than highs. But at two for one tickets for $12, I'm not complaining much. We came back Thursday night to see Russell Peters who was off the hook. Let me tell you - you can really tell the difference between JV and Varsity. For large headliners, definitely come early to get better seats, especially if you have a large party. Yeah the food is mediocre at best, but it's an easy way to fulfill their two item minimum and reserve your seat. Skip the valet out front, which in my opinion is a joke since it's in a giant parking lot - just park your car somewhere else on the lot. If you need something quick, hot, and gooey inside you (now, now, settle down) hit up Maestro's downstairs for a slice of NY style pizza either before or after the show.
I had to wait a few days to post this review so it totally wouldn't be out of context. So, we went to see Jimmy Fallon last weekend and he and the other two comedians were TERRIFIC! Our local boy, Paul Varghese, was super as the opening act.
Since it was Jimmy, the place was packed early and they made us wait outside in the smoky stairwell for an hour before they would let us in. It was freezing and did I say smoky? Anyway, we were fine with it and were patiently waiting to see my boyfriend Jimmy! Once in, we were taken to our table...in the back. Not a big deal, except we all had stiff necks trying to see around the ridiculous people in front of us.
So, then it happened.....okay, yes we were breaking a rule by videotaping...but we were also taking pictures as well. AND, so were 200 other people in the joint, all of them in front of us of course.
A little bitty bratty attitude carrying female came and snatched the camera out of Sheri's hand. Yes, SNATCHED IT. No commentary, just grabbed it and ran off. We were all stunned by her actions and lack of common courtesy. Before you send me any notes saying we were breaking rules, we know it....but it was ridiculous. We would have deleted any of the video had she asked us to step away and come with her. But, she took it, ran off and deleted EVERY SINGLE video and photo.
I love seeing comedians, but not sure I'll be back here.
I'll stick to my guys at Ad-Libs!
Not cool.
The Improv offers some good comedy, but not much else. They can book some good talent, I'll give them that, but I think the only reason people keep coming back is that there aren't many choices in DFW to see good comedy. I went last week to see my friend headline, and I was somewhat disgusted with the service.
I came with three friends, and we asked for separate checks. The waiter looked like we just asked him for his kidney. He finally agreed, but then combined two of them anyway at the end of the night. We all ordered food and drinks, and I would have had another if he had come back to ask. He didn't. Oh, and when he did come back, he dropped our checks with gratuity included. I understand people need to make a living, but this always irritates me. Especially when I just paid for the show, a crappy beer, and crappy food. You're forcing me to pay for crappy service too? I mean, I still left a dollar or so on top of the forced gratuity, because I know times are tough. However, the principle of auto-gratuity just irks me.
Also, throughout the show some people in the kitchen or server station were clanging stuff around and talking loudly. This, along with some piped-in music that was never fully turned off, was driving me crazy. It seemed disrespectful towards the performers. All three comedians were hilarious, but everything else somewhat sombering.
I've been here a couple times. Once to see Tom Wilson (Biff from Back to the Future) and Bill Bellamy. The comedy is top notch but the other aspects of the club need some improvement.
Like others have said don't expect good food. The place is over crowded. The chairs and tables need a make over. Plus, everything is packed together as tightly as possible. Be prepared to crane your neck if you get a bad seat.
The servers were ok - always on the move. It is hard to communicate when the music is blasting. The beers were cold so I can't complain about that. :) Save your money and eat out at one of the many restaurants in the area.
Parking is not too bad. There is a large parking lot and I didn't have a problem finding a parking spot either time I went.
All in all, it makes for a fun evening. The opening acts are funny and get your primed for the main act.
I went here to see Paul Mooney, and I'm not a big fan of his really. But the comedians that came up before him were clearly drunk and high, which made the show even funnier.
By the time the main act started, everyone in the club was tipsy, and drunk at the end of the night. There's a two drink minimum here.
The club is extremely dark, with a single candle for each table. The only setback was the process of getting in the club.
Our tickets were pre-purchased online, yet we still stood outside 15-20 mins waiting to go up the stairs in the back of the building. This could be due to a nationally known comedian being there that night, who knows?
The waiters stayed out of the view, and I could tell they were immune to the hilarious jokes being told. A sidebar note, a drunk lady came into the mens bathroom trying to argue with her date after he left her at the table next to us rambling about nothing.
They are quick to hush people who are holding conversations during the show also, which is good.
Saw Ralphie May here this weekend, and he was funny as could be!
His wife opened for him, and between them, it was almost 2.5 hours of side-splittin fun!
All seats are decent, but if you want to get up close, arrive early. But if you arrive early, you might as well eat, and just be warned that this ain't no fancy dining. Good old American dining menu is what it is. Now, we didn't dine, but it appeared tasty enough, and none of our tablemates complained (most tables hold 8 and you'll be seated with others either in the smoking or non-smoking section that you select).
Drinks were very reasonable for somewhere that has a two item minimum (our bar-bill came to $33 for 5 stiff drinks, tip included). Entry is reasonable for big name comedians($14-$17). So I made it out the door on this date night for under $70. Throw in dinner and you'd be at $100--not bad for a night of food, drinks, and great laughs.
We'll be back.
My friend put the word out that he was going to be a part of the line-up; otherwise, I wouldn't have known about this place.
The place was packed for a 10-person show. I had a blast, out of 10, 3 were exceptionally hilarious, and then to top it off, a touring comedian from Chicago came onstage and finished the night off with more laughs. The service was good; a bit smoky but...the sections are divided at least; and there's a 2 food item or food minimum, just FYI.
And also FYI: NO interrupting the comedians, do NOT shout out anything that may interrupt their performance. I was a bit blitzed and shouted something and got my hand-slapped for doing so. Oops.
Just have fun with it, lots of laughs. :)
I went to a free show here on a random Thursday once and it was OK. Eat before you get there because the food isn't that great. The drinks are STRONG, but they have a lot of fun drink options. The place is set up differently than other comedy clubs I've been to - so you might be sat at a large table with a bunch of strangers. They ask you if you want smoking or non, but I think it might just be so you aren't at a TABLE with smokers because I didn't see a defined smoking/non smoking section at all.
Overall - it's ok.
My wife and I have been here a few times. We have seen Tracy Morgan, Ralphy May and Aris Spears. This is a great place to see a show. The only thing that was not cool was the line to get in. If you are going to see a top notch comedian, make sure you get there super early. The line starts at the door and of you are not one of the first 20 or so people in line, then the line goes out the door and down the stair case. I hope its not cold outside if you are waiting outside in line. There is a bar/club next to the front doors but you might want someone in your party to save your spot because you wont get your spot in line back.
The shows are great. We have sat up front at all of the shows we went to. There is a 2-item min. so you can get a beer and some food. The food is not all that bad.
The comedians most of the time will sign autographs after the show, you just have to wait a few minutes for them to come back out.
We will be back if there is someone that we would like to see.

I have attended many comedy shows here, and they were ok. The food is ok, not the best, not the worst, but mostly fried fast-food items, so if you are health-conscious, you may want to eat before you get here :)..
Also, be sure to arrive on time, because during a good show, it can get crowded really fast, and then you and your group may be split and have to sit at different tables.
Went to the Improv Sat night to see...err...I have no idea the guy's name. He has cerebal palsy though, so a lot of his show is talking about his physical limitations etc. Annnnyway, this is the first time I have been here after almost 10 years in Dallas.
We had to wait in the hallway (which was smoky...and I don't mind smoky) while the hostess wandered around looking for what was supposed to be our table. Apparently our table was no longer available. We ended up being seated dead in front of the stage with a large group of people that were all together. Upgrade. The comics were pretty funny, I had a good view, and overall it was ok even though people are packed in all sardine like in there. Service was fast, our guy was on the ball and he split the tickets without being asked. That's good since it would have been awkward trying to split our tickets with those people we didn't know hehe I didn't eat here because that just doesn't seem like a good idea, but the drinks were fine and there seemed to be some alcohol in them. Afterwards the valet situation outside was a little crazy, but we managed to get our car pretty fast and since it was cold I was very glad about that. Overall I thought it was pretty ok to see some live comedy, so if someone I knew was going to be there I would totally go again.
I really enjoyed the comedians that we saw, but the place is sort of dumpy. They have old banquet chairs, and blah laminate tables. The food is not that great, the chardonnay I had came out lukewarm, and it was all overpriced since you had to have a two item minimum. I would suggest eating somewhere else, and just going here for the show. We went for dinner so we could get a decent seat, since you can go for dinner 1.5 hours before the show starts.
The comedians here are usually really funny. We go at least once every month, and sometimes every week or two. The food and drinks aren't good, but there's a two item minimum, so aim for the cheapest things on the menus. The servers get pretty antsy when you don't order enough, but make sure to not let them ruin your night.
Its famous FOR A REASON! They have great comedians threw here all the time! (Paul Vargeese, Dave Attel, Dean Lewis, etc...) However the food is NOT what you should go here for! The comedians Thurs-sunday great, I hate to admit it but I may have peed my pants.. a little bit. Great great great shows! If there is anything else a comedian is good at its getting drunk and the improv has a great selection of awsome specialty drinks so go get drunk and laugh your tookus off! Keep in mind that even though the main headliner is on for a solid 30 mins you got a lot of other comedians performing before (like 5 or so) So if you dont like one just wait 5 mins and it will change.
TIP: TO SCORE FREE TICKETS ADD THEM ON MYSPACE!! They give away tickets all the time!
I've come here several times for shows. The last I went to was the Russell Peters act which 2 of my friends also attended. We were seated in the wrong area, but the seater graciously moved our party to a reserved table right next to the stage, so it was a GREAT mistake on the waiters part! He definitely did his job in accommodating our needs. I can't remember anything particularly special about the food. However, I did try the "test tube baby" shot they had on their menu.....I specifically ordered it for the funny name. It was AWESOME...tasted like some sort of apple pie/ice cream concoction w a gooey substance at the bottom. It sure did resemble its name! haha! I recommend trying it if you visit.
Pros = dinner and a show/ is located directly next to Pete's dueling piano bar
Cons = you pay for the show and then have to pay a 2 menu item minimum
