Ever since my beloved World Beat Cafe on MLK closed I've been desperately in need of more good Ethiopian food in Austin. While I do like Aster's and will probably go there again, in general I find the food to be slightly above average rather than great and the service tends to be slow, too. Enter Addis in Pflugerville.
Despite being pretty far out of town, Addis is well worth the drive. They offer a similar, though somewhat smaller menu than Addis including items for both vegetarians and meat eaters. From the first bite I was surprised at how much more flavorful and well-spiced the lentils, potatoes and other veggies were than Aster's and also how great the texture of the injera bread was.
We didn't try any of the meat items but we had a little bit of everything off the veggie portion of the menu and all of it was so tasty that we ended up ordering another dish after we quickly polished off the combination plate we had first ordered.
The only drawback is the location, which means I'll probably find myself back at Aster's more than once when I feel like Ethiopian, but for my money Addis is far and above the other options in the Austin area.
