Honestly If you are renovating and not serving customer dinner put a sign up! Walked in hungry and tired only to be told they are really not serving any food but they will open in November with an all you can eat style menu.... Meh...

Definitely below average, but not totally intolerable...

Given that they close super-early at 8pm, had to do the take out.  Their food was somewhat oily and not flavorful.  The kitfo wasn't properly cooked and didn't come with any mitmita (chili powder), and the cheese tasted like cream not cheese.  The veggie combo was ok, but salad is extra.

Overall - expensive and the food is nowhere near as good as another close Ethiopian place... Hate to point more people there but this place isn't worth it...

So I was prepared for this place to be pretty shady.  I was not disappointed.

This is a tiny restaurant in a big strip mall with PetsMart.  There is currently no sign, so it is really difficult to find, but if you look at the address numbers, you can find it next to the dollar store.

The restaurant is teeny tiny.  The interior is painted a sickly green color and has some traditional Ethiopian decorations.  The tables look used and the carpet is stained, which I probably wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't for the arrangement of tables leaving a big open space in the middle.

The place was empty at 1 pm.  The man who served us was bizarre.  He didn't know what Tej was, and had to repeat the order three times, which was weird because all we got was a single veggie combo, water, and honey wine.

He also told me they took AmEx, but then they ran it and declared they didn't take it.

As for the most important thing, the food, it was decent.  The veggie combo has yellow lentils (split peas), red lentils, collard greens, and cabbage/carrots.  The yellow lentils were excellent.  The red lentils were good; in particular, they weren't very spicy, which I loved because they are too spicy for me to eat at many restaurants.  I didn't eat the collard greens.  The vegetable dish was below average.  It had cabbage and carrots, but no discernible potatoes, which are my favorite part of the dish.  It was very bland.  The combo had no salad, that was an extra $4.  :-(

The Tej was good and the server filled the glasses all the way.  The injera (bread that you use as a utensil) is excellent.

I normally go to nearby Zeni (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) but am trying to try all the other local Ethiopian places.  I might come here again if I was running an errand nearby, but it really isn't special.  It might be nicer when they are fully open in a few months...

So I've never tried Ethiopian food before coming here. It's funny because the flavors felt different and yet familiar at the same time. I had a lot of different things but what I really loved was the chicken tibs! I am now a chicken tibs fan haha.

The food was very home style, which is great. Every now and then you need eat at a restaruant that doesn't overload their food with salt.

The restaurant is clean. I met the cook and owner and they are very nice people.

Decent vegetarian combo ~$10 for 2 people! Not the absolute best Ethiopian food I've ever had, but they had good service and they're open on Mondays (whereas Zeni, its more famous neighbor, is not).

I don't usually say this, but the decor in this place actually takes away from the eating experience.  It looks like the place was opened on a VERY tight budget. The location is a hole-in-the-wall strip mall crammed between Petco and a Dollar-Mart.  Plenty of parking.  The food was good, but unexceptional, (3.5 stars).

My friend and I ordered the two different Lamb Tibs options, which were tasty, and we shared a veggie combo: yellow lentils (very good), red lentils (a bit too spicy for me), collard greens (tasteless, bla), and cabbage (good).  We ate everything but the collard greens and drank a bottle of honey wine (definitely try if you've never had).

Our server was very nice, and since we were pretty much the only people in this tiny restaurant, service was good :-)

The prices are reasonable, $52 before tip ($15 bottle of wine, 3 entrees).

Overall, it wasn't bad, but the decor made me feel kind of dirty eating here ... I doubt I'll be back.  Zeni's is next on my list to try.

I like to help out places that are hard to spot, or new, or aren't doing so well, by trying their food and spreading word of mouth if its good. Plus I love ethiopian food, so its hard to disappoint me there.

They managed to disappoint me. I failed to order take-out from this place 3 times.  But since I never got to try the food, I can't give them only one star.

The first time it was a tuesday so they were closed, my fault. I didn't check the hours first. Many places are closed on Monday or Tuesday.

The second time was on a Friday, and it was 8pm, apparently thats when they close. The take-out menu I had said they were open until 9. But maybe it was an old take-out menu. Of course, I don't know of any other restaurants that close at 8.

The third time it was 7 oclock on a Saturday. They said they were closed. No reason given.

I'm not going to try a fourth time.

Being introduced to Ethiopian food is interesting. This is the second place I have ever ate Ethiopian food and it was good. This place is small though so I think during lunch time it would be pretty crowded. I came to order food to go. The service was fast and friendly. The atmosphere was nice while I waited for them to bring out my food. I liked that they also sold some Ethiopian spices. You can buy some of that stuff and make your own Ethiopian food if you dare. Try the lamb meat, its very tender and tasty. If you are interested in a drink, try the honey wine. Can be strong at times but very good with your meal.

I've been to an Addis restaurant in Oakland many times (one of my favs) as well as many great Ethiopian places in Berkeley and SF so I kind of know this kind of food.  I never knew about this place before because it's tucked away in an area I drive by frequently but never walk around this shopping center.  Well today I happen to pass by Zeni Ethiopian on Saratoga Ave and I saw like 100 Ethiopian looking people all hanging outside this place and thought what's going on. It got me really hungry for going to eat there. The problem was take out orders were an hour wait and sitting down was over that.  I decided forget it and came to Yelp to see if there was any other alternatives.  Addis came to the rescue and it was so close that I had to try it.  Well I got there and there was only one major party there and no wait.  I decided not to do take out and go for sitting down.  They were really cool people.. The person helping was willing let me try the chickpea dish in the veggie combo plate which is normally different from the 4 other items they choose.  Anyway I ordered the honey wine and an Ethiopian Beer called Meta which is a lager coming near a town called Addis something (read the flyer).  Anyway they say the water they brew the beer is made from what they call holy water because it's so pure, and I thought it was very good indeed.  The wine was also good but it is sweet  and strong :))) so know that's what you are going to get. All the veggie dishes were really good.  The Miser Wat (it's not Yemisir as Anonymouse Cat says) was great and the lentils cooked perfectly with lots of spice but not over the top.  The  yellow peas (kik wat) was really vibrantly colored yellow and had a great flavor and texture.  The chickpea dish was good but it was a little more blended than I would have liked but fun to try.  The injera (the fermented flatbread you eat your dish with) was good also and it came with plenty to finish the meal with.  My only suggestion is to put a little salad in the middle of the combo dish like many places do just to round off the meal.  also you do have to wait some for things to come but I like the chance to sit and relax and enjoy the experience. Overall I was very happy to have escaped the confines of the over crowded Zeni and  find this cool and relaxing place.

I just ate here for lunch today ;-(  I really wanted ethiopian food because I love it.  I've been trying to venture out and try other places in the SouthBay other than my usual favorite and was highly disappointed.  The staff was very sweet and nice.  However the food was bland and left alot to be desired.  I eat ethiopian at least 3 times a month so I know what it's suppose to taste like, even the bread wasn't sour enough.  I have to agree with some of the other reviews that it was definitely below average.  One good thing is that she automatically gave me the 15% yelp discount on the bill so KUDOS for that.  However I don't think we will return.

we went here last night and even though the open sign was on, it looked like they were closed. the guy at the front checked with the kitchen and said we could be seated. we got the veggie platter and when it came, i was a little dismayed at the lack of food. but it dawned on me when the bill came that we only got one combo, not two. the food was super good and the one combo was enough for two people. the guy serving us was very nice, but the service seemed a little slow. i'd go back just to check it out, since i have a feeling the service normally isn't like this.

I'm spoiled by Asmara in Oakland.
I went for lunch.  The TV was on VERY loud on a soap opera, which made it difficult to read (which I enjoy doing over meals).  There were no other patrons so I can only assume the staff was watching.
The injera did not have a strong enough acidic flavor and was cold.
I had the vegetarian combo.  The cabbage/carrot dish was quite tasty but overly greasy.  They were out of yellow lentils so I got a double order of the red lentils.  They were pretty bland and not nearly as good as Asmara.  The "tomato salad" I ordered turned out to be chopped fresh tomatoes, jalapenos, and oil.  I'm not big on jalapenos...so.....but they did make the lentils a little more exciting.
I ordered water with the meal which turned out to be bottled water, when I actually just wanted tap water.
It was VERY expensive for lunch.  For the same meal at Asmara I would have paid ~$11; here it was closer to $20.
