Oakland, CA
Top stars for their gluten-free pizza crust option. Any pizzas they offer can be ordered with a gluten-free crust! This is great news for me as I must eat GF, but my husband can order a regular crust. Both my husband and I enjoyed the pizza. The GF crust is thin - very thin - and slightly crispy at the exterior edges. I personally loved this (but I am a thin-crust type of person). If you like thin, thin crusts or just want to cut your carbs a bit, try the GF crust. Otherwise, my husband says the regular crust was great.
Perhaps the only downside is that the pizzas come in only one standard size (8 slices) which means we have to order 2 whole pizzas for just the two of us. The upside is that the GF crust in thin enough that I can almost eat the whole pizza myself. (My husband comfortably split the regular-crusted pizza with a friend.) Perhaps another downside is that the GF pizza is the same price as the regular-crusted pizza even though it is less filling. Ah well. I am just stoked that I can eat pizza out without making my non-GF friends eat GF.
I love the decor and the ambiance inside. It is classy but comfy. Bring your family, or bring a date. It is a large place. Would be great for group gatherings, but there are booths and smaller tables, too.
I also tried a side dish of chard that was oven-fired with garlic and ricotta. (They omitted the bread crumbs to make it GF.) This was delish!
We will go back another time to try the frozen custard. -

The potato salad is really very good.
The burger was mediocre, with one piece of lettuce as a topping, for $12. It took not quite 30 minutes to make, with exactly one other table occupied.
I feel cheated, and sad that this is the closest restaurant to my home. -

Addie's was a pleasant surprise! Located in South Berkeley, it's not the prettiest or safest looking place to walk around at night - unarmed, but upon entering the large glass doors, you're instantly whisked away and treated to a dimly lit, romantic cove with high ceilings and beautiful windows.
I've tried a few pizzas, salads and desserts and have consistently been happy. They seasonally update their menu, which I greatly appreciate! King St is highly recommended! My favorites have been the potato with the bacon and farm egg, and the winter squash with sage. I also have to mention the fennel and sausage.
The crust has always gone well with all the added flavors. Medium thickness with enough flavor that you want to eat the ends alone, but it doesn't overpower or distract from the toppings.
The frozen custard was a HUGE disappointment after the good things I've heard. It lacked richness and texture. Perhaps, their freezer was broken that night.
Would I rate this pizza as the best I've ever tasted? No, but for the price and taste - Addie's is a must for locals; however, I wouldn't make it a destination. -

While I'm a local and really want to see this place succeed, our experience last night was beyond horrible. The service was beyond bad, we waited more than an hour for the pizza, the interior was loud and obnoxious, and the pizza was just "so so". But beyond this, the server didn't use the gluten free dough, or he lied to us about it being available.
PLEASE if someone asks for gluten free, there is a good reason. Having your intestines feel like they are digesting shards of glass all night is not fun!
I don't know if I'll give them an other chance after this...it was a maddening experience for overpriced/mediocre food. -

This was our first meal in the Bay Area. We ordered lots of things and shared them. The arugula salad and radicchio salads were excellent. The polenta with gorgonzola sounded so promising! A margherita pizza, pretty standard, but delicious. The Portobello pizza with nutmeg. NUTMEG ON PIZZA! I think I'm going to have to start putting nutmeg on everything.
The best thing there was the fried cauliflower. Probably the best appetizer of all time.
I think there must be grooming requirements about always having a perfectly groomed 5 o'clock shadow. -

Food was awesome and worth the price.
Our wait was average-long to sit down for a Friday nite. However because we sat at the bar we anticipated getting quick service. Our order for the pizza was lost and we waited about an hour for it. No offer for a free glass of wine and we only got some free bread after we asked. Not cool.... -

Yummy pizza but you really got to work on your service. Seriously, an hour wait for food is not acceptable. We were so hungry we were chewing our own fingers. Hopefully this was a fluke and it won'thappen again!

Let me say, I LOVE this place. They would totally get 5 Stars if they would keep the potato pizza on the menu! Geez.
Went there one night after yoga. A friend wanted to order the potato, bacon, arugula pizza with an egg. It didn't sound great but I wasn't really hungry, so whatever...
Turns out I was SO WRONG!!!! This pizza kicks ass and deserves to be on the menu everyday for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and even on Monday's when they are closed!
This is the best pizza of all time and although I respect the ever-changing menu idea...there are some things that are meant to be staples. Especially if there is nothing else close offered.
We also split a blood orange salad and loved that as well.
Love this place. Hate to tell you because I don't want to stand in line, but I am hoping you will call everyday, like I do and DEMAND they keep this amazing potato pizza on the daily menu...I mean, Geez, I am not asking that much!
Limited wine menu BTW, but the staff are great! -

The best parts of the pie were the crust and the size. Other than those things, it lacked pizza zing. It tasted more like dough with toppings; it lacked a zesty sauce, tangy cheese, flavorful basil. Give me Patsy's, Pepe's, or PIQ any day!
But I do recommend the strawberry custard. Quite tasty and creamy! -

Pizza is ok, I dont think it is worth the price, especially when Pizzaiolo is so much better. we had an eggplant pizza that was pretty tasty....I like that they are trying to make this business work in South Berkeley and the owner is really dedicated to the neighborhood. that being said, the service was not that great either.

Sometimes you just want good, traditional American-style whole pizza.
~ Cheeseboard? Too froofy, and no tomato sauce.
~ Dopo? Italian, refined, sure --- but I want something BIG.
~ Pizzaiolo? I can't wait in line -- I'm starving. Plus it's a slightly wimpy Italian pie again.
Addie's is where you go. Good pizza, nice location, no wait! The do a good job with the meaty pizzas -- I haven't had the others. Ahhhh. -

I should preface this with the fact that I'm from Chicago and am a pizza snob.
I had read good things about Addies, so checked it out this evening. They have cloth napkins and table service. The staff is friendly and the pizza came to my table fast. You can order individual slices with any toppings you like--made to order. And they were only $3 per slice plus $1 per added ingredient.
I ordered the sausage and cheese pizza to see how well they do with the basic. The medium thickness crust lacked crispness and solid texture. The sauce seemed canned, and the "homemade" sausage was ok, but nothing to write home about. I had to remove grease from the pizza slices, something that the chef usually does before serving it.
What is this fuss over the frozen custard? I ordered it and ate just a little. Very little flavor, not all that creamy. I've had better from Dairy Queen.
There are so many better pizza -

This is my go-to spot for pizza and beer, Lanesplitter can suck it.
The bartenders are cute and smart, the food is delicious and the beer selection is good. They also have frozen custard which is damn tasty. Maybe you don't want to sit at the bar? Say you've got a date? You can get a table with candlelight and act very grown up by eating your delicious pizza with a knife and fork. Ladies, if you're trying to pretend to be on a diet, the salads are fresh and tasty. But seriously, get some frozen custard. -

Cheeseboard is closed on Mondays, oh what to do! Try Addie's! I am an east coast pizza lover and have struggled moving out here to find decent pizza, but Addie's was great. We got take out, but as soon as the boyfriend came home with the pizza he said next time we should eat in because it's really cute.
The sauce-great, the cheese-great, the crust really great. I'm sold. I got a chopped green salad and I have to say I wish it was a little less chopped and a little more green, but that won't stop me from coming back. -

Just went back to Addie's for the second time. Both experiences were great - the pizza is delicious - crispy crust right where you want it and tons of generous savory toppings and cheese (we had the King pizza this time which has delicious sausage).
Better yet - tons of great local beers on tap.
Even better, it's right around the corner from our house, so now we have another sweet neighborhood munch joint.
And yes, the custard is good too - the cinnamon was refreshing after stuffing myself with tons of pizza and brew. -

This was my 2nd trip to Addie's, the first being last week.
First off, for vegans, last week was better. There were better choices of toppings for vegans last week. I was not impressed today, with the "Asparagus", with truffles, meyer lemon & tomato sauce. Meh! I didn't realize until we were done, that I never noticed one truffle! Someone might say, if it was made with the cheese, it would have been better. But as a long-time vegan, I know how much better vegan choices can be at ANY restaurant.
2nd, one size does NOT fit all! Now they've reduced their choices for pizza sizes down to one. 12" is the only size.
3rd, wait staff was a bit hapless. And the kitchen was misinformative. Was the soup vegan? Answer: I don't know, yes, no, maybe so. Ultimately it was NO. We ordered appetizers after we returned the NON-vegan soup (it had CREAM & butter in it), which last week had been vegan. S/he brought our replacement appetizers after the pizza had already shown up. These appetizers, roasted cauliflower and pickles were OK, nothing to write home about.
Overall, the vegan accomodations were much easier to make last week. The pizza I got last week wasn't available this week. And that was too bad, because the choices they had tonight were mediocre at best.
For the apparent lack of accomodations for vegans, staff wasn't helpful and didn't offer to make up for the shortcomings.
So basically, if you're vegan, don't bother. We won't. -

Pizzzzzzzzzaaaaaaaaaaaa.
- King's Street (tomato sauce, pepperoni, sausage, salami, mushrooms, peppers, onions, olives)
- Margherita (tomato sauce, mozzarella, basil)
- Bianco (white pie with roasted mushrooms & fontina)
In order of what I enjoyed. Bianco then King's Street (fairly close in goodness for me) then the Margherita (basically a cheese pizza we ordered to accommodate one of our picky friends) a bit of a distance away.
Fairly surprising since I normally like everything on my pizza and I thought King's Street would be my favorite. But no. Bianco was just too good.
Beeeeeeeeer.
- a pitcher of Laguitas Pils. I usually think Pilsners are .. "MEH", but I was pleasantly surprised by this choice. I guess I shoulda known, as Lagunitas (the brewery) is LEGIT and has never let me down yet.
Cappuccino for dessert. Nice way to end the meal.
Would definitely want to come back again. -

I loved the pizza! Best crust I've ever had! I had the King St. pizza, and the smaller size was priced right, and perfect for two -- so we bought the bigger one which was an even better deal, and we had dinner for the next day.
The only thing that bugged was the service itself. The waitress never came and refilled my drink, and we sat around too long waiting for someone to pick up our card and box up our leftovers. Finally another waitress came and helped us. -

Reservations are for groups of 6 or more. I would call in advance, but this place isn't all that busy. There are a good variety of smaller tables and bigger tables. The space between tables is pretty big too, so it makes this place feel pretty roomy. There is also a super high ceiling that adds to this airiness. The menu is online as well as the frozen custard calendar. When I went, there was vanilla, strawberry, and Mexican chocolate. The Mexican chocolate was my least favorite because it was really dark and smoky, plus grimy in texture. It was not smooth at all like the other two. The vanilla was great and the strawberry wasn't tart. Each scoop is served with a thin chocolate cookie. The cookie was good. There's also a good selection of beers, both bottled and on tap. There are a few red and a few white wines offered as well. There is one tv here.
There are two sizes: 12" and 16". The large was pretty big actually. 3 large pizzas for 7 people was filling. The King Street sounded most impressive, but was not that loaded. The margherita was good and the basil was freshly shredded. The bianco was definitely loved. I'd be intersested in coming back to try the white corn and the classico. -
Review from Autumn S.
Emeryville, CA
First off, this place is more like 3 1/2 stars. Great music and ambiance. The food - I am torn. The pizza was tasty but it didn't "WOW" me by any means. The parm crostini was not my fav. I definitely enjoyed the caesar salad. It was incredibly fresh with a tangy lemon flavor. They were out of vanilla, so we opted for the blueberry and chocolate custard. They were both tasty but the chocolate had a graininess to it that I did not care for. I've had frozen custard several times and it's always rich, indulgent and creamy. My husband's blueberry was all of the above. The chocolate - not so much.
Overall, it was a pretty decent experience. I'd love to see a menu expansion for the place. Many pizza parlors have tried their hand at this location and I'm hoping Addie's sticks around. -

Tastiest Pizza You Have Never Tried.
Yeah, the pizza here is good. It's its own thing, as I find each pizza place has its own personality, its own merits towards their particular pies. This place is good because all the ingredients and components are good. The crust one would expect to be good, as half of the Addie's team is Sweet Adeleine's, a local bakery. The tomato sauce is really good, and the pepperoni tasted 'artisan' too, probably from a small, local meat purveyor. Put it all together, and you get a damn good tasting pizza pie.
I'm saying all this because I want this place to survive. Ate there on a Friday night, and it was dead. Don't know if all the hoopla has subsided since the opening, but this place should be generating more business, as the food is solid, and pretty tasty. Maybe they could drop their prices a few bucks, and the place would get more traffic. Or try advertising better. Not sure, but something has to be done if they want to survive.
KNOW YOUR CLIENTELE - this is my message to the owners. Food is good, but most people eating here are locals, and yes, once again, need to remind you of the neighborhood, which will not continue to support high prices - evidenced from what I saw Friday night. On a Friday night, a PIZZA PLACE should be packed to the gills with families. I think there were four other tables besides us - that's all. And this was at prime dinner time.
Hope to see you still here after the summer.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I'm going to do this a little backwards...FROZEN CUSTARD.. (even though I have been to New Jersey and tried boardwalk frozen custard and it's a different taste altogether from Berkeley/California cuisine frozen custard) is delicious especially after pizza + beers.
We had the Southside pizza which was beyond delicious. And the crust was done to perfection- not too burnt. Also we had the arugula salad which was a great compliment to the meal. The ambiance is cute and intimate- we were chatting with the waitress and found out it used to be a bank. I thought the pizza was better than Pizzaiolo which gets a ton of attention and hype. -

I am currently addicted to their meatballs and chopped salad. I am writing this while waiting to go pick up my chow after giving birth three days ago. Yes, that good!
FYI- not having pumpkin spice custard until after Halloween, come on now kids, I need to get my Fall on a little quicker. -

Reading the reviews here I see comments about the price, and about the price given the location.
I just want to say that the asparagus, green garlic, ricotta, and lemon zest pizza (The Spring Harvest) that I had this evening was "10" on a scale of 1 to 10, as good a pizza as I can remember having anywhere.
(As for desert, tonight the peanut butter custard seemed like only about a 9.5, as compared to the pumpkin custard I had here last Fall, which I remember as a definite 10.)
I realize that not everyone can afford the price, which is, yeah, more expensive than Domino's. I couldn't afford it every night. But if you're willing and able to pay for quality, then you owe it to yourself to try Addie's at least once and see if you don't agree that it's worth every penny. -

I must preface this with saying that I did take out here only, so I cannot speak to a dine-in experience, yet.
It was a long day at work and I had no desire to cook anything when I got home, so after checking out "gluten free" in the search section on my mobile Yelp app, I saw Addie's gluten free pizza option. Any of their pizzas can come gluten free for only $3- more. Most places charge $6- more and up for a gluten free pizza crust option, by the way. I liked the options so I thought I'd give it a try.
The folks who work there were very welcoming and friendly, and while I was waiting, a charming guy who works there who was hanging out on his day off (good sign!), let me know that the gluten free crusts are actually made in house! Every Bay area restaurant I have seen, that offers gluten free pizzas, buys their crusts frozen from either Still Riding or Mariposa. These aren't bad crusts, but they are a bit dry and bready.
I ordered the White Corn pizza, which is a "white" pie, or no sauce version, but I ordered it with tomato sauce and mushrooms added. It came standard with jalapenos, red onions, cilantro, goat cheese, and limes. It was fantastic! The crust was thin, like a real Italian pizza, and crispy on the edges. I am so excited that I have discovered this place. If you are gluten intolerant, you have to try them. My boyfriend, who can eat anything, loved the pizza too. I have found my new favorite pizza place! -

Pretty darn good!
Went in yesterday for lunch with the hubby. The hubby is a super picky pizza eater, and we just got back from NYC where we ate a ton of famous New York style pizza, so his standards have gotten even higher. We started out with the lunch special for me (slice of pepperoni with a garden salad, and an additional slice (what can I say, I'm pregnant and eating for two), and the hubby got 1 slice of pepperoni, too.
The garden salad was excellent. Little gems lettuce, and an herb buttermilk dressing. Very good! The we both got our slices, and the hubby immediately said "mmm.. this is pretty good." So, we decided to skip my second slice, and order a 12" pepperoni pie. The texture of the pizza is as though it were from a wood fired oven, but it's actually from a regular "slide your pizza in" industrial kind of oven. But, something special is going on there, because it produces a beautiful crust. The sauce is fresh and beautiful, and it has just the right amount of cheese. I'll definitely be back! -

We enjoyed their caesar salad, meatballs, pepperoni pizza, and a pizza with olives/peppers/onions. My favorite were the meatballs, so flavorful. The pizza's were pretty darn good as well because you can taste how fresh the ingredients were. The salad had tons of dressing on it but still good.
We walked through a sort of sketch neighborhood to get here, I probably felt this way because we are not very familiar with Berkeley. So my personal opinion is that this neighborhood does not do the place any justice.
The staff were extremely friendly, bathrooms were clean and it was a beautiful day outside. I mean really what more can you ask for? All in all I really enjoyed myself there. -

We rented out the restaurant for a wedding rehearsal dinner. I couldn't have been happier. The food was fabulous. The staff was friendly. The owner, Jennifer, was very accommodating helping us set up the type of party we were hoping for. Many guests commented on how beautiful the space looked and how great the food was. All for a reasonable price. If you are looking for a great restaurant to throw a large rehearsal dinner that won't break the bank, this is the place!

3.5 if I could.
Addie's is another pizza new-comer on the block. I decided to give it a go on a Friday night and had a group of friends meet me here.
Service is super nice! I called in a couple days before I was planning to show up and although they don't really take reservations they put my name down anyways and assured me that they'd have a table ready for me in case it got super busy. Awesome!
For a group of 7, we decided to split 3 small pizzas and a salad. I'll just start off by saying that we should have ordered more food. We decided to try the warm spinach salad. The hazelnuts and vinaigrette were perfect! Unfortunately, we didn't realize how small the salad was (portion for 1 person). For the pizzas we had the Margherita, the Southside, and the Winter Harvest. I really liked the Southside (it was my fave of the night), and the winter harvest. Both were really tasty. The Margherita was the least impressive and not memorable for me.
I must say, although the pizzas were delicious, I felt that the prices were a bit too high for the amount that you get. Smalls will run you $18, and larges $25 (unless you get the Margherita).
If I'm craving pizza, not sure if this place would make it the cut. -

I had been going to Spuds for years in this location before they closed and must say the ambiance and food is now much better.
We went here for a low-key Valentine's eve dinner. and it hit the spot for a mellow, informal, spacious, not fighting for a reservation kinda place, and good food too. Service was a bit uneven, even though everyone was friendly.
We ordered a couple of 12" pizzas, and had plenty to bring home, along with the citrus salad that didn't work for me - the olive dressing just didn't work with the lettuce and too-large pieces of goat cheese. The pizzas were tasty and had a very light in the tummy feeling, which I appreciated so I could have desert - I mean it was Valentine's day and a girl's gotta have her chocolate.
I had the chocolate pave which was a standout - light, full of flavor, with a perfect texture between dense and airy...paired perfectly with a fresh and deep Americano coffee.
As other reviewers have noted, I too think it's a bit on the pricey side for pizza - it's not going to be the place I bring the teens. As for the neighborhood, people need to get over it. Easy parking and I didn't notice any particular safety issues. Nice nott to have to pay for parking or drive around downtown Berkeley looking for a street spot. -
Review from Ann L.
Went to Addie's Pizza Pie in South Berkeley the other day. It's only 2 blocks from Ashby Bart so anyone can get there. There are meter parking spots, but I saw covers on them - what does that mean?
It wasn't busy when I went so we could sit anywhere. We picked a two-top table near the window. They have a long bar area w/ happy hr M-F 5-7pm. Booths on the Left side and tables around the huge space.
We got:
Warm spinach salad $6 - it's enough for 1 or 2 if sharing & getting other stuff. I liked it ok.
Spring Harvest ~ Asparagus, green garlic, ricotta, lemon zest * $18/25 - we got the small & it's pretty big. 8 slices total so 4 slices is maybe too much for some, but I finished mine. Fine, but wish they had meat!
I want to try the Southside ~ Sausage, spicy fennel, black olives * $18/ 25 if I ever go back.
Should have asked if they do 1/2 and 1/2. Darn it!
Wanted to try the Frozen Custard $3, $5.5, $8 for 1, 2, 3 scoops, but we had Ben & Jerry's for Free Cone Day before eating here.
Other desserts sounded good too: Chocolate Pave $6; Fruit Tart $6, etc.
Credit cards taken. Two unisex bathrooms available.

I really want Addie's to do well. I live around there, and for those who are familiar with the area, you know that other than the Vault, Cafe Colucci and Sweet Adeline, there isn't much within a short walking distance that doesn't have bullet-proof windows.
Since Addie's opening, I've been there 3 times, and the one thing that mostly brought my rating down was the service. It seemed that the wait staff is pretty inexperienced. I got this helpless sense from them the moment I walked in and was waiting to be seated...
I enjoyed the food. I'm just a bit worried because it's not the best pizza in that price range, and who's going to come all the way here when there are other choices? The pizza dough was pretty thin, and they had solid combinations for the toppings. The sizes are great to accomodate both small 2-person dinners and larger parties.
The decor is pretty cozy. They have booths along one of the window walls, a bar on the opposite wall, tons of tables in the middle, and part of the open kitchen at the very back. I think it would be more interesting to be able to see more of the action in the kitchen if they didn't stack things up by the glass. The hard floors and tall ceilings make it pretty loud during busy times... But now I'm just being nit-picky.
I'm going to keep going back to support my neighborhood pizzeria, and hopefully once they've ironed some kinks out, it'll be an extremely enjoyable place to go! -

Very mediocre. We went there for the gluten free crust and it was very disappointing. The normal pizza was only so so but the meatballs were tasty. We were also given the wrong box of food to take home.

Have been there for lunch twice. Got the chopped salad both times and it was fabulous. The portion was a bit smaller the second time but the tangy lemon vinaigrette is delicious. The pizza is fine but not my favorite with some many stellar pizza choices in the area. I do want to go for dinner and have the warm spinach salad and the winter squash/sage pizza - those both sound fabulous.
Plus is the interior where you aren't packed in elbow to elbow with other tables. The booths are nice and the tables move so you aren't slammed in if you don't happened to look like Twiggy. -

Yes, still delicious. I feel like Addies is hitting its stride. My experiences here (about 2-3x per month) are consistently excellent.
The complex flavors of the yeasty crust betray the owner's bakery prowess.
I've ordered the Greek almost every time - the tang, brine, and spice play well together and make for an easy, memorable favorite. The citrus salad, with its bright chunks of blood orange, is a delicious winter treat.
Stepping outside the box, the winter squash and sage pizza is also fantastic - the autumnal flavors meld well together and go surprisingly well on pizza. Their arugula and prosciutto pizza is also a delicious and simple mix of contrasts, at once salty and rich with a nip of spicy arugula.
Also, their housemade ice cream is amazing. We recently had a scoop of blood orange and a scoop of vanilla, which in combination tasted like a fantastic grown-up creamsicle.Listed in: Pizza Round Up
