Okay, so if we're going to talk about standoffish service on Carmel's Main Street, THIS is the place where it happens. If you don't look like you'd be willing to fork over the $105 for a 5 inch by 5 inch starfish seemingly made of space age lucite, then the archetypal stuffy help doesn't really care to help you. Oh well.

This place is filled with smallish works of functional art. Artists from all over the nation are represented. A New York artist does the Mexican inspired burnished bronze boxes with small insets of art. The pieces are small, but intriguing and versatile.

The same description would fit the array of blown glass salt and pepper shakers here. Though you'd have to be very careful using them, they come in sweeping, snail-topped crystal and other fun but elegant designs.

Wow, Jenn and I must have been here on the same day or close to it because I also had the "standoffish" service she relates. I was browsing for a gift for a girlfriend and while I did see some nice jewelry that might have worked well - especially the Sorrelli bits - I ended up going with just a Klaus Porto soap. Granted, I don't know how much the earrings I was looking at would have cost, and based on my and Jenn's take, they were probably beyond budget....but, wouldn't have been nice to have the salesperson float over and open the case for me to get a closer peek? Now, the Porto soap is deliciously fragrant, but it's true that you can get these hefty, artfully-wrapped bars elsewhere, so...

I second Jenn's note on the salt-n-pepper shakers...those were among the most interesting pieces in the shop. I also spied Chilewich place mats in the back of the store and on inquiry was told the owner would order any design from the line apart from what was in stock...that will definitely bring me back to the store because I love these on the dining table!

In the end, I did get a "hello" and offer of assistance, but that was not until I was a mere twelve paces from the register with my wallet out :-)

I will go back again some time, just like I'll try the other shops in the A & D  District where my visits have not gone as well as have Jenn's....just proves the old cliche of "timing is everything" true once again!
