This is not one of your trendy coffee shops. There's nothing fancy about how they roast their beans or brew their coffee. It's a few blocks away from the main drag in Adams Morgan.

Why would you come here then? If you don't really care for people-watching, Tryst is packed and you want a casual unpretentious place to get some coffee and hang out. The people who work here are really nice.

    Haiku #13:

    No-frills joint for sure
    Clutter, late-nineties, yet cozy
    Bell and whistle-free

So this place is kind of strange.  It's cluttered, cramped, serves pita sandwiches, cakes, and ice cream, and of course, a variety of coffee beverages.  There are also random cups and picture frames and bottles of Hershey's strawberry syrup randomly thrown up on the walls and various little shelves smattering the joint.  The staff are quite friendly.  Plus they put game shows on the little TV.

Just got an iced coffee and gatorade here (great for across st from Tennis courts) and had a nice experience.

The women working was super sweet and it felt like a nice local place.

The Iced Coffee was ok. The ice melted quickly (or there wasn't even) after putting milk and sugar so I had to ask for more. Wasn't the best iced coffee but it did the trick.

I ended up here because Tryst was packed and ended up coming back because it's a cozy shop, with good food and coffee. Unlike many coffee shops in the area, the WIFI has consistently worked every time I've been in. It's not a huge place but there's usually a place to sit.

Power outlets are also near every table so if you need to charge a device, grab a coffee, a pastry and leave a tip. The owners pay rent and utilities here so you can have access to a fancy charging station.

A little coffee primer before we get back to all the "brah talk"

    So check this bro:

Espresso is finely ground fresh roasted coffee prepared in a manner in which roughly 14-18g of coffee has 9bars of steam pressure forced through it for roughly 21-30 seconds.

All the variance is due to a variety of external factors which you PAY the barista $3.43 for a damn latte to account and correct for!

This is what makes espresso based drinks taste the way they do and not like burnt drip coffee.   If you have to pay for all this nonsense it should be done right.

If reading the above annoyed you or prompted you into thinking, "wow this dude is way to intense about his coffee and should quit at life" then I'd recommend switching back to drip coffee as drinking"lattes" doesn't

    a) Help you show that girl from HR your O-Face, Chaz   and
    b) doesn't  help make that married guy take your `relationship` to the next level, Kristin.

    Bad:

Sorry girl I'm just not that into your weak sauce espresso!

This place may be cute and all buts its coffee sucks.  I mean really really stinks.  I threw my macchiato in the trash on the way back to my house.

It tasted like burnt drip coffee covered in Mr. Bubble.

    Rad:

The food here isn't that bad for a little cutesy deli.  I also really like coffee shops and this place seems to have a lot going for it other than its featured attraction.  I'd probably walk to jolt 'n bolt for their crappy coffee.  If I felt more motivate I head over around the corner to Filter on 20th street and get the real thing.

2 Stars for only managing to fail at what I can only assume is 80% of your core business.

Checked this place out on Yelp as we tried desperately to find coffee and food (we were staying at the Hilton  and wanted to branch out). The coffee was not very good (I like mine strong and hot-this was very weak) and the glass mugs they served in were small, I had a chicken sandwhich which was over toasted and had some rubbery substance (I assume the chicken) drowned in mustard. My hubby had the eggwich was was OK. Not somewhere we would go back or recommend.

I pride myself on being hyper-observant, but I had no idea that this quaint cafe' had been open for 7 mos...I think it took over a space that held a cute little boutique.

The only reason I noticed it was that they had a sidewalk sign advertising ice cream.  Stopped me in my tracks.

I just stopped in for a waffle cone of strawberry Breyer's, and the place was surprisingly busy with a good number of patrons on this late Saturday afternoon.

The server was polite, and I took my cone to go.  The place is pretty tiny, but I'll stop in again when I'm near that end of AdMo.

This was... not good. We ended up here because everywhere else was too crowded in the cold/rain.

The mocha and hot chocolate were practically indistinguishable from each other, and I ended up tossing the mocha...

+1 star for the apple turnover, which the bf enjoyed

This humble little cafe is just opened. There is no fancy name yet but you can find it via Eye-catching sign, "Coffee shop Grand Opening" in Orange color.

Hard to categorize this coffee shop into just one because it has coffee shop, icecream bar and breakfast menu. This cafe has VERY honest prices for everything. Espresso drinks come with medium or large (no small) and all the drinks are about $.50 lower than most other coffee shop. No price difference between white chocolate mocha and regualr mocha (all coffee shop should learn this!!).  Medium mocha is only $2.90.

An ethiopian (I think) lady welcomes you with warm smile. I asked my white chocolate mocha with extra foam (no whip) and she made pretty good one.

Food menu included breakfast items like omelet and lunch items like sandwiches.

It was small but warm-feeling cafe that I am sure to go back for breakfast or lunch someday.

When you stayed up all night in Adams morgan and you need to cure massive hangover, why not go to this small cafe and get double-dosed caffeine (turbo hot-espresso in coffee) and high-protein egg dish from this nice cafe lady. You might want to call your mom and let her know that you got food just like she made at home.

PS: Yes, there are seatings. so you don't have to eat on the street.
**If you are lucky, you might get a cute-window seat.

Jolt-and-Bolt was not quite open on a Saturday at 7am when we began setting up for our community service project, so we decided to try this little spot across from Reed elementary. I got a substantial bagel with bacon and egg and a small coffee for about $5. The bagel took a little bit to get, but it was pretty tasty and just what I needed to start the morning.

Their coffee is definitely strong, but it's not overly bitter. I wish they had splenda and maybe some cinnamon in their condiment selection. Clean, cozy little shop. Not a lot of seating, but it's a small shop to grab and go. Plus free wifi. $5 minimum for credit card.

I guess it's still in its "grand opening" a couple months later, eh?

Low-key, fairley priced, and good service.  The women who generally works her is very sweet and never fails to cook up something great.  This is a great place to pick up a quick bite or to lounge around to study.  The freshed squeezed orange juice is amazing but even better is the ice-cold lemonade.  I stop in every morning on my walk to work.  I highly recommend it!

Adams Morgan coffee shops are an ever changing family, but one that's filled with too many black sheep.  Don't get me wrong, I like Tryst as much as the next hipster, but sometimes I just want to enjoy my coffee without people hovering around me waiting for my table. Enter Adams Morgan Coffee Shop.

Directly across from Mary Reed, and nestled between Shake Your Booty and Adams Morgan Hardware, AM Coffee Shop offers coffee locally sourced from Orinoco Coffee and Tea in Columbia, MD. The regular dark roast and Turbo (read "Red Eye") were strong, smooth and tasteful. Serving sizes are medium and large, with the $1.85 large a mere $0.20 more than a medium.

The interior is bright and inviting, with a smattering of 4 tables and counter with a few stools looking out onto 18th St. In addition to the coffee, AM Coffee Shop also offers up a varied selection of other drinks and food.  Drinks include fresh lemonade, smoothies, and tea.  The freshly, squeezed-per-order orange juice is a definite highlight.
Food includes very reasonably priced breakfast and lunch options. A generous Western Omelet served between two pieces of warm pita is $3.99, and although the omelet resembled more of a scramble, it was clearly done with 2 large eggs and lots of fresh tomatoes, green peppers and onions. They also off up a display case with a hard-to-fight-the-urge selection of pastries from the French Confection, another local purveyor.  Only the Breyers Ice-Cream counter gives me pause - it seems a little out of place, taking up precious space which aches to be filled a few more tables and a comfy chair or two.

Best yet, they offer free wi-fi (with no weekend restrictions!)

My suggestion: ditch the chains, support the local, enjoy the coffee, splurge on pastry and wonder about the ice cream.

This is a wonderful little gem, tucked away near the last remaining elements of the Ethiopian community in Admo.

Not only is the coffee delicious, but Helen (the owner) makes some of the best sandwiches I've ever had in DC.  Seriously, the Chicken and Tuna Sandwiches alone are worth the trip, as are the wraps. And you always get the benefit of an extremely yummy and fresh salad that is made based on a recipe  I've yet to see replicated in the city.

Overall, the scene is mellow, the wireless is free, the staff is wonderfully sweet, and the place is a welcome change from certain other places in the area.

There are many coffee places to chose from, but this wins in my book.  Woman-owned, family run, and first-rate.

Very nice, low-key place with good food and excellent value.    I've ordered the veggie wrap on two occasions -- it was terrific.  It was also so big that I wound up wrapping it up to take with me for later.  The wrap came with a substantial side salad and pita chips.

For those who continually complain about another bar or lounge always opening in Adams Morgan, here is your opportunity to support a local business that isn't a bar.  Get on over to the Adams Morgan Coffee Shop!

Stopped by this little gem while waiting for a friend. What a great establishment. It has a great selection of food for a small cafe. There's even a little section of several ice cream flavors. During my visit, I got a very tasty teriyaki chicken sandwich for around seven bucks and it came with a flavorful tomato/cucumber salad and potato chips. That's a pretty good value, especially considering that I had no idea the salad and chips came on the side. As for, the decor is inviting and relaxed with a variety of stools, chairs and ottomans. It could fit maybe about 20 people tops but it has enough other draws to not worry about that. Still, with all that it has to offer, it's definitely in the running to be of one of my favorite locally owned cafes.

Very quiet space, with great food and caffeine menu - all reasonably priced. I like going here to hole up for a while and study - it's not overcrowded and noisy like Tryst can be. Hours are convenient for night owls too.

A great place for coffee and espresso drinks!
I have been to the Adams Morgan Coffee Shop three times now and they have not disappointed, inasmuch as I ordered coffee and received it as ordered - and with a smile and, as a the previous reviewer commented, for a bit cheaper than other shops in the area.
The shop is in a daylight basement and painted a vibrant mellon color.  Oh - and Wi-Fi is free!  This is my new favorite study spot.

Went there this morning the lady is very nice and the place is quite and clean.  The bagels were ok, they are not made on site but is a decent place to go if you want something other than Starbucks.  My only real complaint is that they do not serve any turkey or chicken sausage or bacon, but only have pork products.  If they added that to the menu it would definitely make make me happier and push it up to 4 stars.
