I've had acupuncture, massage and chiropractic done here. You really do get the feeling that everyone here wants to help you reach your full potential. The price is definitely reasonable considering how much I end of spending on healthcare with western medical professionals. If you are looking for an alternative medicine route, you have a variety of staff at this place that can help you.

I know it sounds fabricated... but this place has changed my life. Really, walking through life NOT being in pain can really put a spring in your step. Dr. Dave (chiro) said on my first vist to give him a month to see if I felt better, that was in April 2011 and I've seen him weekly since. (I don't have to go every week, but I insist!). I also see Robin for acupuncture which is amazing and very powerful. Their prices really make this kind of personal care possible for me. I love the supplement line that Dr Dave prescribes. Between the chiro, the supplements, and the acupuncture I am starting 2012 happier and healthier than I have ever been!

Love these folks - Dr. Dave McCann, DC, the chiropractor is the best I've ever had... very gentle, no rack 'em crack 'em here. And the treatments last. His wife does energy healing that's outstanding.
The place is too small, but other than that I love it and would recommend it to anyone. -

(This review is just based on my experience with Dr. Dave, the chiropractor.)
Gotta say, Dr. D is AMAZING. I've been going to him because of discomfort in my sacrum and neck. I never realized these things are also what has kept me from being able to do a "full" push-up, despite working out and trying to strengthen for months.
Today, Dr. Dave worked on some old injuries. By the time I got home, I could do full push-ups again. Turns out it wasn't really a strength issue, but an issue of muscles talking to nerves. (OK, that's my terminology, he might not say it the same way.)
Also, I spent several MONTHS trying to work through this with another chiro. Dave got me there in just a few sessions. He's phenomenal. -

I really hate to knock a community based business that's there to help people with low incomes (or no income, like myself). That being said, I'll also metion that this review is based on one experience.
I went in for a massage because I have neck/ back issues and they offer services on a sliding scale.
The secretary- really nice lady, although a little bit spacey (she talked herself through the process of ringing me up).
The ambience- none really. It's an open floor plan, there are no separate rooms for massage. Here's the weird thing: The massage tables are set up behing curtains that are held closed with random strips of velcro. The segregated massage area also faces the acupuncture chairs. There are big gaps between the velcro so EVERYONE can see you taking your clothes off. So, I hope you are comfortable with your body, because a lot of people will see it.
My therapist- interestingly enough, a former student where I used to work. Nice guy, BUT:
*He very obviously had a cold/or some allergy issues because I kept hearing him snort up his pleghm every 5 minutes (GRRROOOSSS)
* He talked during the entire massage about his surf/massage endeavors (dude, put the bong down)
*He also told me that he started his own practice while he was still a student (that's totally illegal, which, btw, he acknowledged)
The massage was OK. Honestly, the sliding scale isn't that affordable. $50 for an hour massage ain't that cheap. You can go to a massage school and get the same quality, but for half the price. Or, you can pay an extra $15 (total of $65) and get a stellar massage by a pro.
So, I won't go back for massage, but maybe I'll check out some of the other services they provide.Comment from Ryan A. of Adams Avenue Integrative Health 12/5/2011

Review from Drea S.
Oakland, CA
I had my first massage at the Integrative Health center this week.
I was very happy with my experience. I love the fact that they opened an alternative healing center that is affordable for lower income people.
I've never paid for a massage before because it was always out of my price range. Lately though, I've had a lot of pain in my upper back muscles (stupid desk job!), and it's interfering with my dance practice. I was delighted to find out that they have a sliding scale payment system.
So I scheduled a half hour message just to try it out. My masseuse, Sandra, was very nice and professional. I received a stellar massage, and I was just relaxed into a pile of jello on the table. It was worth the cost, for sure.
My only slight displeasure was the aesthetics of the room. I'm very sensitive to environment and ambiance. The massages are done in on tables surrounded by long curtains in the main room. The light is really bright and garish, and the walls and curtains a sterile white. It was very clinical feeling, not relaxing. It would be nice if some organic decorations and soothing colors were integrated into the decor.
Other than that, it was a wonderful experience, and I set up another appointment for a deep tissue massage.
Thank you to the owners for creating such a wonderful place for healing.
*And a quick note for finding the place- It's right by Rosie O'Grady's. Their neon sign is much easier to spot than the clinics modest storefront. -

I have been waiting out putting up my review for this place.
While I like that they are affordable, $25 a visit for students, I didn't like the one time fee. Although I looked up a bunch of places before I decided to go here and they all have a one time fee, and its generally a lot more $ than here. You get what you pay for with this place, like one reviewer said, its an open space, so you hear what other people are doing, and there really isn't "privacy".
Anyway, I have been here twice. I went for Acupuncture only. I injured my achilles tendon and even though I had been following my doctors orders and talking to my PT friend, I wanted to see what else I could do, so I could get back on track and working out, what I found was Acupuncture. I wasn't sure if it would work, I am open to other methods than just western medicine, things like herb treatments and acupuncture is what I like to call "Hippie medicine". I am somewhat hippie myself, so I do not find this offensive.
When I went the first time, I have to fill out a bunch of papers you find standard when you go to doctors office, thats fine. Then I was taken behind the curtain to a massage table and I consulted with my female acupuncturist, she was nice, soft spoken and talked me throughout the process. I was checking things off in my head about this just being quackery, or beneficial. When she asked me to see my tongue, I put a big red mental check in the "Quackery" column (I have since googled why they ask, but I still think its weird). She then put the needles in the injured leg and I was told to relax. She also put a few needles in my other leg, and in my arm, I did not like that, but once it go uncomfortable she removed the ones in my arm.
Afterwards my leg felt a lot better, I could barely feel any strain on my tendon. she recommended coming in once a week for a couple weeks then I could space it out to every other week, and then if needed, a total of maybe 8 visits she said. Although the pain in my leg came back really soon (within 20 minutes), it was less than normal, and I was somewhat pleased with the results.
The next time I booked an appointment, it was just with whoever was available. I was helped right away by a male acupuncturist and I was asked to sit down on one of the lazy boy recliners. Odd, I thought, but whatever. After the tongue thing again, he started with the needles, all in the FRONT of my UNINJURED leg. I understand acupuncture is about the tendons being connected, blah blah blah, I get it. Then 2 needles in my wrist and one in my foot, between my big toe and the other toe. No needle in my injured leg until I gave a weird look and then he had my pinpoint the pain and then he stuck a needle there. Not only did the positioning of the needles annoy me, but the guy seemed to just shove them right in, I flinched every time, and once pulled back, and he said:
"oh generally my tattooed patients don't even flinch"
Well, just because I'm tattooed doesn't mean I'm immune to pain, it hurt a lot more than the first time I went, which made that second time the LAST time I go here. The guy also said that I should extensively get treatments, about 2 a week for at least 8 weeks. No thanks. I haven't been for about a month, and I have been fine with just stretching, yoga, ice and tiger balm, and I am already running again.
For some people, this can work, it just didn't for me. -

I used to to go hear about year ago when they had a big building on Adams. I had a great acupuncturist there. I decided to go back after a while since they moved into their smaller space. They have moved to 3239 Adams Ave. On Adams and Bancroft. I found an amazing acupuncturist and he was very kind and very attentive. He spent a lot of time with me and really addressed all my issues that I had.
Since I used to be a patient of theirs in the past they still had me on file which was wonderful and I was able to get a treatment right away. The new place is smaller but much more cozy and I felt very calm and peaceful there. It is a very soothing atmosphere and you can feel the good vibes just being in the space.
This place is the best and I am very grateful for it. I would highly recommend this place to any one going for acupuncture treatment. Ask for Erich! -

This establishment is a "communal" massage/chiropractic/acupuncture center, meaning everyone is together in one noisy room at the same time.
If you're used to or prefer receiving these types of treatments in a more private setting, then this is not the place for you. -

Caring, attentive, dedicated staff at Integrative Health. This is a great model for what healthcare could be - priced according to a sliding scale, so everyone can access care with staff that treats all their clients with dignity.
Don was my acupuncturist - he took the time to discuss my health holistically then gave me appropriate treatment. He's such a soothing presence to be around.
Great work all! -

When this place was created it seemed to have had a vision ...to engage the community through wellness ,to support , to provide affordable alternative healing and healthcare to the community and to those in need. .. To provide awareness to those who may not understand the power of acupuncture, or massage ... It is not a spa ,although I have had that feeling there ,tea ,music and all ...It is not a dull uptight, clinic ...you may be open about anything that is ailing you ,as you should be if you are even willing to try alternative healing ..
This is a place of sanctuary , a place to go and center yourself ..work on yourself as times can be tough, treat yourself good... your body needs more than we are willing to admit most of the time ..
As a client ,volunteer and believer in this Clinic .. Please do yourself a favor and visit these amazing group of individuals ... they will heal you and help you... and you know ya need it ! All smiles , Namaste -

This is my first review and the first time I have written a love letter to a business. I moved to San Diego in March and was very ill. The Doctors in the East Bay could find nothing wrong with me after running test after test that proved I was in great health. One of my goals in March was to be able to walk to a coffee shop that was a block away and home again.
I was walking by AAIG and stopped to look at what they had posted in the window when Dr. Dave walked out and talked about their services. He told me they were having an open house on the following Saturday. I went.
It has now been 5 1/2 months working with Drs. David and Colleen McCann and I am a new person. I have had chiropractic and energy work plus nutritional counseling and foot baths for detoxifying. I was committed to my healing and knew I had found the people who could facilitate this happening for me.
Last Sunday I walked just under a mile in my neighborhood to have brunch with my daughter. This was a far cry from my goal of around the corner to the coffee shop. While I did not have a terminal condition I no longer had the quality of life that made it possible for me to participate fully in the world. They gave me back my life. I will be forever grateful.
At the time I started going to them I was unable to work so the sliding scale made it possible for me to get the work that I needed. This nonprofit has a mission statement that I fully endorse but then again, what can I say. I'm in love. -

I was sick with a cold a couple of weeks ago and I considered my options: One, I could TRY to get in to see the doctor and be told there was nothing she could do and that I should take some over-the-counter meds (and deal with the icky side effects), or two, I could set up an appointment for the next day at Adams Avenue Integrative Health and bliss out in their office with some healing acupuncture, soothing music, and even a tip on some helpful Chinese herbs. I'll let you decide which option I chose.

I thought I had tried everything for my sinus problems. I had surgery three years ago and that did help a lot, but I was still getting headaches. This past year I recently started to get earaches as well. I took Sudafed like it was a multivitamin and then I realized, probably not so good to do. Someone then recommended acupuncture for my ears and sinus problems.
This is where Adams Avenue Integrative Health saved my life! It was very easy to make an appointment. Your first visit you fill out a long form explaining your health history so make sure you get there early. Tea and water are available while you wait. You should be warned that everything is very open, which at first was a little alarming, but considering they are trying to do something positive for the community I don't care if I have to get treated on the street. There is a row of about six recliners and someone may or may not be sitting next to you with needles in their body. I sat at one of the chairs and spoke with one of the acupuncturists. He was very understanding and stuck about ten needles in me and told me to relax for about twenty minutes. I was very nervous, but hopeful at the same time.
I went back once a week for the next five weeks. During my appointments I was put at ease and my acupuncturist always remembered to ask about my life and always remembered what was going on! Way more than I can say about my general practitioner through Kaiser.
If you are ever on Adams Ave. just stop in to check it out and see what it is all about. I believe there is something there for everyone! -

As an outreach resource and community healing center being treated indoors or outdoors gives us the opportunity to practice relaxing in our real world. To learn to heal ourselves in our information overload society is a benefit. It is nice to know there is a place to go in what ever financial weather we are in. A place of refuge for others as well. Thanks so much Adams Avenue Integrative Health. May the center continue to grow with healing practitioners.

Read the review and decided to give it a shot. I've been fortunate to have had acupuncture before.
Didn't have a good experience!!!!
No relieve of sciatic issue at all. Then told I have to do 8 return visits in the next 2 wks. As I read on I see a pattern. Besides filling a 8 page review on my life before speaking with them I would not recommend this place.
There are much better!!!
I'm sure its a good effort for the community but I don't have faith in the practitioners!
Oh and only street parking and minimal at that.
Don't recommend. -

I just have to say that the Adams Ave. Integrative Health Center is a godsend. I'm so thankful for all they do in Normal Heights and other under - served neighborhoods in San Diego. The therapists are excellent, the location is convenient, the price is right. Every experience I've had there has been positive.

I started going to the Adams Ave Clinic in December '08 and have been a regular (every week or every other week) since then. As a young adult who works multiple jobs, goes to school, and still has a hard time making ends meet I feel incredibly grateful to have AAIH in my community. They have a sliding scale for services that I, as well as many others, would be otherwise unable to afford. Throughout the last 9 months I have gotten acupuncture, chiropractic work, detox foot baths, and nutritional counseling for ailments ranging from depression to stomach aches to the common cold. I have had very positive experiences with the clinic and I've noticed significant improvement in my overall well being. I find the atmosphere in the clinic amicable and entertaining. While it isn't a one on one session with a health provider, there is a nice community feel. It can also be very educational as patients can see others being healed and experience different forms of treatment. I know that AAIH staff is always willing to do whatever is needed to make their clients comfortable, and if a concern is expressed, I am sure they will take care of it. Occasionally I think the staff could be a little more professional, but no establishment is perfect. AAIH also provides weekly free community services to low-income communities which is an altruism unparalleled by any medical establishment or health service that I have ever heard of. I highly recommend the clinic to my friends (and to anyone reading to the end of my lengthy review), which is not an act I take lightly. Furthermore, as an individual studying to work in the alternative health field, I hope to someday be lucky enough to work in a similar environment.
