In this crowded jungle are all the cheap houseplants you could ever want.

A hanging philodendron the size of a small child? $12! The cool macrame hanging plant ropes with wooden beads? $6! Those cool soil-less plants that look like amoebas? Only $2 each! I swear I've seen those things at *other* nurseries for more than ten a piece...

I've literally decked out my living room in healthy, air-cleaning plants for forty bucks--and the staff was helpful in picking out the fullest plants.

I've had three experiences here worth mentioning:
1) a walk around after breakfast at the Flying Saucer... more of a "just looking" visit.  I was happily left to browse.
2) on a tip to fill my new apartment with plants I arrived to find a hand drawn sign that said: "be back in 30 mins."  Unfortunately, there was no time of when the employee left--so I waited, waited some more, and left my name and number in the door as I left for Sprout Home. I returned 45 mins later, sans a call, with the place still locked up. I waited for another 20 mins before going home, bitterly holding back a back review.

And now you've read my third.  Despite the second incident, it is still worth my five stars.

Home Depot has cheap houseplants--Adams and Son has them cheaper, healthier, and brought to you by a family business. Awesome.

The prices here are unbeatable.  When my mother visits me, she always buys tons of stuff here.  We recently bought a gigantic Rosemary plant that cost only $5.

The staff and owners are always helpful and quick to start up a conversation.

They have something for everyone,.

Simply adorable! I only had a small area for gardening in our condo (community area) but I could also rely on Adams and Sons to provide me with exceptional service and advice. Sometimes I would just come here to browse the plants and get ideas for when I would have more gardening room!

Quality of goods and friendly service!

Irene, Gus, Tony, and crew are fabulous!
Walking through their store is therapeutic for me, and being greeted by their kitty with head bumps is free!
Prices are great and selection is bountiful. I love getting aquatic plants here and checking out what's in the cold case.
We came here to purchase greenery for our landscaping project too and Tony gave us such a deal we thought someone had slipped something in our tea.
LOVE IT.

Good for cheap annuals but if you want a plant to survive more than a season this is not the best bet.  The plants are not always the healthiest.  As a farmer's daughter and mother's flower child, the vegetable selection was weak and unhealthy.  Irene is a sweet heart and I will be back for the cheap potting soil, terracotta, friendly service, and cut flowers.  Great price but you do get what you pay for.

I must say, to find a greenhouse in the city:

1. where the staff is friendly and very knowledgeable...
2. where the prices for their plants and plant accessories are very affordable...
3. that's in a good location with plenty of street parking and a spot to pickup orders...
4. that has a nice variety of plants for any environment...

...is hard to find. Tony and his staff helped me get started with plants that would work on my balcony, as well as indoors. They have the best deals on a great selection of pots for plants. Waaaay cheaper than Home Depot or Gethsemane. Don't go to Gethsemane's unless you have a big budget for plants or want to find some rare/exotic species. Go to Adam & Son's; you won't be disappointed!

Since finding a job was a little harder than I had expected it to be,  I decided I needed a little project for my afternoons.  I am very lucky to have a sister who cooks (for me!) and what better way to thank her than to give her fresh herbs to use!

The first time I went to Adams & Son, it was specifically to get some information about pricing and what sort of time and effort would be needed for this project.  I know absolutely nothing about gardening and wanted to make sure I wasn't getting in over my head.   Right away, a young good looking guy (who honestly I would not expect to see in a gardening store, perhaps 'son of Adam'?) answered all my questions and eased my doubts.  He broke down (dumbed down?) each step of the process and really took his time explaining.  Affordable-check,  Easy-check.  Couldn't wait to tell sis and see if she was on board!

I went back a couple days later to buy my supplies and get started.  Cute Son was not there this time but I received the same attentive help from a woman (wife of Adam?).  Just to be clear, I had her re-explain each step, which she did very patiently and was also excited for us to have our own herbs to cook with.

Not to my sisters liking, the cilantro was easiest to grow!  Can't wait to go back for more projects!

Very happy with the wedding flowers we got from Adams & Son.  We ordered bouquets, boutinnieres, a ceremony centerpiece, table centerpiece flowers, and a floral comb for my hair.  Irene is so nice, patient, and super easy to work with.  For our first meeting, she sat with me for an hour showing me pictures and getting ideas for what I wanted.  I told her right away that I'm not a big flowers person, so I didn't want to spend a lot of money.  She showed me what the most affordable flowers were, and I never felt pressure from her or guilt for going this route, which I very much appreciated.  I ended up going with stock and daisies for the bridesmaids and mini calla lillies for me.  I called Jewel to do a price comparison, and Adams & Son even beat their prices.

Irene is one talented flower arranger.  Everything ended up being very affordable because we used less expensive flowers, but her talent for arranging made everything look so elegant, artistic and classy.  On the day of the wedding, I was blown away by the arrangements that Irene put together.  We got tons of compliments on the bouquets and boutinnieres, and no one had any idea how affordable they were.  She also accommodated my request for silk flowers for my mom, who is quite allergic to flowers.  The ceremony centerpiece was ginormous!!!  I also asked Irene for a flower for my hair, and I expected one stem, but she arranged a few beautifully on a comb with gold wire.

We did splurge more on table centerpieces, opting to go with orchids in a tall vase and submerged in water.  The orchids Irene chose for us were not only beautiful, but carefully prepared individually with little water pouches until we were ready to use them.  We also went over the table centerpiece design we wanted and she provided us all the necessary florist equipment we needed including weights, floral wire, and green putty.  She even put together a sample for us, so we knew what we had to do.  She did a lot of prepping, and it was so easy to put everything together.

I'll post pictures when I get them back.  I would love to show off Irene's handiwork!

Thank heavens for Adams & Sons. I wish I would have known about this place before stocking up on houseplants at Gethsemane when I first moved here - waaayy more affordable.  They have tons of succulents, great houseplants, lots of various pots, hanging plant holders, etc. The only thing they didn't have was ... soil. They said they were waiting on a shipment.

The owners were also incredibly nice.

Adams & Sons Gardens - another great find! After spending my life's savings over the years at Gethsemane Garden Center, I can now rest easy knowing we have found THE place for reasonably priced flowering plants, containers, herbs, pots and other gardening accoutrement. Great selection of tomato plants especially the heirloom varieties - my beloved was in her glory and had a hard time making a decision.

The owner was very friendly and helpful as was his dad who said "oh, you will find us on Yelp - people love us on Yelp." That gave me quite a chuckle. They are also a florist and have a good selection of fresh cut flowers at very reasonable prices.

My third five star review in 30 mins - I must be feeling generous. Next thing you know I will be collecting unicorns and Precious Moments figurines.

I absolutely adore this place! Best keep secret in Chicago, but I'm ready to tell the world about it...THIS IS HONESTLY MY FAV PLACE TO VISIT!!! The customer service is amazing and they have the most beautiful orchids I have ever seen. They are shipped directly from Hawaii, according to Tony the owner, who happens to be a cutie patutie! Tony was very helpful! I was able to pick up everything I needed to landscape the entire front of my home with his help! I also purchased 2 spider orchids and some fresh cut flowers! I couldn't resist....Great products, Variety, great prices and great service, why go anymore else!! I'm hooked on Adams & son....pics soon to come!

Why on earth would you go anywhere else to get your plant & garden stuff?

The prices here are FANTASTIC, the staff is super-helpful, plentiful, and knowledgeable.  They have a very good selection of plants & flowers and an unbelievable selection of pots.

We've come here twice thusfar this spring. We bought some window box hangers for our balcony. Turns out, they didn't fit (our fault, not theirs), so we came back to return them.  We lost the receipt and were a little nervous about how it'll go over returning them.  There were no problems at all and we happily spent additional money there on some more pots and plants.

If you go to Home Depot for your gardening needs, you need to stop. You have a problem. You're missing out on supporting a local business and you will save a ton of money if you come here.  I love this place and I just wish I had a bigger yard and/or an additional balcony so I could buy more things from this store.

This is a happy happy place!! And they have amazing prices.  Wander in off California Street and you'll find a sanctuary of water fountains, floating lilies,  many many choices of herbs, hanging flowers and thousands of pots to choose from for your plants.
I am a firm believe that one of the best gifts you can give someone, is a beautiful live plant or flower -- because they give a smile every day.
I was gifted a nice selection of herbs today by a good friend.
Happy days!!!

Adams & Son is a great small, local business.  They are always very friendly and helpful.  I've bought my plants from them for the last 2 years and everything has always done very well.

I feel very lucky to have them so close to home!  Their nursery is so beautiful that I always end up coming home with plants when I go out for a walk.

Great place. Super friendly customer service and cheap prices.  I used to go to City Escape on Lake.  But since they don't carry any organic fertilizer and their prices are ridiculous I searched out for something better and I found it.  And within a bike ride of my house.

I love coming here. The prices are reasonable and the expert advice is invaluable. I go there a few times every season and spend way more than I want to, but only because the selection is amazing and there's so much wonderful stuff. I just picked up some Air Plants and they are so neat people have been asking me about them ever since I got them.

I bought 3 trees from them at the beginning of the summer.
I arrived 20 minutes before they closed and was given a terrible service. Everyone was ready to close and I had to look for people to ask questions. He/one of the sons, also promised to give me a discount if I buy 4 trees. I could only fit 3 trees in my car, and I told him that I will come back to buy the 4th one. As I was paying and negotiating with him, he yelled at me that he was there from 5 a.m. in the morning and he wants to go. He did not give me a discount and actually charged me $30 vs $28 for the trees I bough. 2 weeks later, 2 Hibiscus trees dyed, and the 3rd (Oleander) - never bloomed, as promised. I will never buy anything from them again. The guy must have had a bad day, but my experience was so unpleasant that I didn't even want to go back and return the dead trees. There is plenty of wonderful nursery's in the city!

I'm using Adams and Sons for my wedding flowers, based on the great reviews here. Although if they weren't so well-reviewed, I probably would not have given them a second chance. They were very hesitant to negotiate on price, and didn't exactly "sell" us. Pretty gruff.  But...this is understandable since they will more than likely book our date with or without our business.

In the end, they did meet our price (reluctantly). I'll be sure to update come the wedding date. Hopefully I made the right decision! Man, I hope I made the right decision.

Well, I finally made it in to Adam's and Sons and it was just as wonderful as I expected. I picked up a gardenia tree, a flowering shrub thing, and an aloe vera plant. They are all fabulous and I left with full instructions on how to care for them.

I'll probably end up killing them anyway, but for now, they are lovely.

They are very knowledgeable, very friendly and not at all pushy. Not to mention the fact that their plants are incredibly reasonable. AND -- when I got injured outside of the store by a crazy kid on a bike, Tony patched me up. It was really nice :)

My house is full of cacti and it's all because of Adams & Son.  I go to Flying Saucer, it's a half an hour wait, I come home with a cactus.

I was never a plant person before coming here and I'm not the sort of person to just wander into a garden center. With Adams & Son, you can't help but stop in if you're walking by. It's like a magnetic force.

Pick a plant, any plant, and whoever you happen to run into at the store can tell you how much light and water it needs, and anything else you could possibly need to know. Which is really important if you're someone who can kill a plant just by looking at it, like me.

I absolutely adore this store!  The staff was really helpful and friendly.  It's so fun to walk around their outdoor garden area, everything is beautiful and hasn't been killed by me yet.  I bought several potted herbs here, potted spinach, and some baskets for my deck, and all are extremely healthy, and I certainly don't deserve the credit.

I absolutely adore this place. The owners are so sweet and they really know what they're doing. I remember when this used to be a little grocery store. I was so sad when they closed the store but was so pleased to see they ended up opening a gardening place. They have everything you can imagine and if they don't I'm sure they would order it for you. I work down the block from this place and they always send us a fresh bouquet every holiday. Love them...love them...love them!

I really really wanted to use Adams and Sons and I met with Irene about 3 weeks ago.  She was awesome and gave great ideas for my wedding.  The quote would take 2 weeks because she needed to call her vendor.  So, about 2.5 weeks later, I just call to follow up.  When I called today, Irene just let me know that she'll be out of the country for personal reasons.

Sucks that I can't use them because I'm sure they produce great work, but now I'm back to square one.  :(  Luckily, Irene has offered to help me find another florist.

WOW. I LOVE THE ARRANGEMENT!!! I love it so much I had to yell it at you.  My bf, who is now the fiancee, got flowers from here the night he proposed. It was part of this elaborate proposal scheme and once we got over the craziness of actually being engaged, he told me about this place.

He said that the owner here was AMAZING.  The service he provided, the amount of care he put into the arrangement and the overall experience was worth considering them to do our wedding!!!! And, this was day two of being engaged! That's how much he loved them! LOL.

Seriously though, the fiancee doesn't really go on and on about service he receives at different places unless it was exceptional.  The fact that he brought it up two days later goes to show just how much he appreciated Adams & Sons.

Please help do your part to keep neighborhood businesses alive and patronize this place, the arrangement I got was the most beautiful I've ever received.

I've been going here since they opened a few years back and they continue to increase in both quality and quantity of all things gardening.  It's right around the corner from where we live so it's extremely convenient and the fact that they are very nice and helpful doesn't hurt one bit...plus it's a family run business so you actually feel good about spending your money there, knowing it's going to people who have a passion for their product and invested in its success.

Outside of all the outdoor herbs, plants, flowers, containers and vegetables (*see my Pics in their profile*) they are also a florist.  Great for when you want to get some roses and the like for your lady "just because" or to liven up your home.

Bottom line, great store run by equally great people with a nice selection of goods at reasonable prices.

This place is wonderful.  After getting several ASTRONOMICAL quotes for plants for our office, I thought to check out this place which is a block from my apartment.

Oh, wow.  They are the best!  They not only beat the other quotes, but provided a wider variety of top-notch plants at a FRACTION of the price.  They also delivered everything, carried, installed, and even repotted some of our older plants that we bought elsewhere - not just affordably, CHEAP even!

I can't recommend them enough - anyone who needs a plant for their home, office, or garden should go here.

It's my local shop so maybe I'm biased, but I'd come out here even if I didn't live down the street.

I must thank Adams and Son for giving my black thumb a new lease on life. I had pretty much given up on growing any plants at home, but the friendly sales staff here made me feel like bad plants can happen to good people. Armed with a bunch of tips on how not to kill my green friends, I left the store with two new potted plants. And I'm happy to report, that four months later, my new houseplants are still thriving! Thanks guys!
Update: Five months in, one of my houseplants was fading, and I took it back in for advice...as usual, these guys rock! Got me and my plant back on track.

This place is great: helpful staff, huge selection, affordable prices.  We went last weekend and got tons of vegetables and herbs for the porch, even a lime tree.  When my wife asked them if they could deliver a bag of soil (we were on the bus), the guy behind the counter was honest with us and said we could probably just carry it.  I thought that was awesome- they could have made some extra cash off us.  I'm knocking down one star because we discovered bugs on one of our pepper plants a few days later.  We will definitely be back in the fall for bulbs.

Update:  After writing this review, Tony from Adam and Sons emailed me to apologize for the pepper bugs and offer us a free plant next time we stop by.  How awesome is that?  Adams and Sons gets their star back.

Ladies, I painfully learned something about florists: don't give them your business, especially when you are about to get married, if they have a very pregnant daughter. I should just leave it at that and have you wondered but I am a nice girl and I am going to explain a little bit...
The first time we stopped by Adams&Sons I was really impressed. Irene seemed very nice and knowledgeable and they really put me in their pocket with Zoe, their cute little kitten hanging out in the store. But then things went bad..............I stopped by several times for Irene with an appointment only to discover that she had to leave for the day. She was never available in the store or on the phone - which made communication very difficult. Our flowers ended up ok (even if the centerpieces were much larger than expected) but I didn't have a chance to see anything beforehand. Can be quite freaking for the most stressed brides out there! Not such a pleasant experience overall...

I've shopped for garden flowers and herbs for years.  Adams & Son Gardens has the best prices and service, hands down. People from all over the city were in line with me.  Tony was equally friendly with every customer and has a great sense of humor.  All of their plants are organically fertilized.  I'll definitely be back to see the Adams family.

Thank you fellow Yelpers for recommending this place!

What can I say that hasn't been said? These guys are less expensive than that other super posh garden shop just down the street on Grand, and they are so family nice! In spring they feature a well-edited selection of things you definitely need to plant in your garden (or in a container on your window sill, or in a container that gets just enough light). I love that they are just down the street from me, making the hauling of bags of planting medium and compost so much more convenient.

Don't ever leave the neighborhood, Adams family!

Wandering home one night, I thought it would be nice to get a plant for my home.  It was winter, so the shop's usually plentiful outdoor section was barren, and the front windows were coated from the inside with the mist of a well-hydrated plant shop.  Walking in, the shop stretched all the way back to the alley, crowded with the most exotic mix of green things I've seen.  It was like walking into the Little Shop of Horrors.  And the big agave plant in the front made me jump back a little.

The shop stocks candles and incense, so it smells more like a hippy shop than a green plant store, but the variety is great.  Even in the middle of winter, they had a huge basil plant, actually more of a bush, to sell to me.  They have a broad array of cacti, herbs, flowering plants, and random odd things that grow.

The prices are impressively low.  The guys that run the shop are super friendly and were happy to walk me through how to keep the plants alive and happy.   I'd definitely go back.

I'm a beginning gardener and so the advice I can get when I make purchases is invaluable. There isn't a question I've asked any of the workers here that they weren't able to answer pleasantly and thoroughly. I can't stress of unbelievably nice and knowledgeable they are, especially when I'm describing how my plant died and they offer up a diagnosis. It turned out I sun-burned my aloe vera to death.

The only thing I can grow with remarkable success (by default) are succulents so I'm a sucker for aloe veras and jade trees, which they have excellent specimens of for really cheap. A foot tall and plump aloe vera plant is only $6.99 here! They also have an excellent selection of baby cacti for as cheap as $1.99 and they're a beautiful and wide selection.

I'm a gardening cheat. I'm really terrible with seeds and starting things inside. Luckily all their starter plants are of remarkable and affordable quality, and buying it from here guarantees I can find out how not to kill the plant.

They get the 3 stars purely because the plants are plentiful, varied, and cheap. That way, if you kill your purchases, you don't feel so bad about your investment, as you might have if you bought your plants from Gethsemane, or even Home Depot.

In my experience, the customer service was sorely lacking. On a Thursday afternoon at 1pm, I was the *only* customer in the place, and not once did either of the owners offer any assistance during my one hour there, even while I wrestled a 40 lb bag of potting soil on to my wagon. The guy wouldn't even get off his a** to help me maneuver a FULL wagon of plants through those wacky crowded plant aisles into the store itself. The woman there was busy watering plants, and was completely oblivious to the fact that she kept nailing me with the spray. After I'd paid, I guess the imaginary throngs of people demanding attention in the store prevented either of the owners from even offering to help me put that 40 lb bag of potting soil into my car, which was parked 30 feet away from the store entrance.

The topper was having to pull that loaded wagon full of plants and potting soil down the sidewalk through a brewing battle among a cluster of gang-banger baby mama's screaming and throwing down right next to the store. (and I quote: "Are you callin' me a ho?! Are you callin' me a ho?! Are you callin' me a ho?! Are yo callin' me a ho?!") I just wanted to make it out of the fray, plants intact.

I'd go back for my cheap annuals, but with low expectations for good customer service.

This place is amazing.  I have never bought plants in my life and wanted to spruce up my new apartment.  The guy that worked there was very helpful and educated me about the plants and how to care for them.  I walked out of there with four trees, six plants, pots for all of them, soil, and potting mix, and was able to get so much because the prices were so good.  I will never go anywhere else.

Cute little florist/greenhouse in my hood with a very, i repeat VERY cute florist to boot.  I go here weekly to buy fresh flowers for my place and I've always been greeted by fast, friendly, and competent service.  Ok so I go in to look at the eye candy too, but the greenhouse has great prices on all your gardening needs - I also purchased some chives, parsley, and basil here as well.

If you're ever around the way, stop in!

Why didn't I learn of this place last year, when I ended up spending over 100 on some plants for my deck garden?!

I really appreciate that this place is a great flower shop without being trendy or overpriced.  Granted, I'm always impressed by the more upscale shops like Flora and Bloom and other one-word flower shops that are very elegant and just-so, but it's so nice to have a place that is less worried about looking fancy or more worried about having a wonderful, affordable selection of plants.

What a gem this place is.  I wandered in after picking up a cupcake from Tipsycake, just wanting a handful of flowers to celebrate spring.  The florist was incredibly nice and knowledgeable, and the store--oh my!  It doesn't look like much from the street, but the store is huge and has a great, affordable collection.  I got a bunch of daffodils, 2 irises, and a small potted plant for my cubicle for under 10 dollars.

I will definitely be back there soon, where the florist tells me they have a huge outdoor slection as well in the warmer months.

My former boyfriend - now fiance - and I are using Adams and Son for our wedding flowers.  Their price was FRACTION of other places and Irene (aka, "mom") spent LOTS of time with us.  She answered all my silly, girly questions and we were thrilled to be able to use them.  Fleur in Logan Square gave me a MINIMUM price of $3k for wedding flowers - that's INSANE!  Irene was more than happy to work with us so we're getting what we want at a price that won't make me want to puke up my wedding cake.  I'll try to post another update after the wedding, but I have a feeling this will turn out really well.  Please visit and support this neighborhood store - you will NOT be disappointed!
