This Garden Center is such a wonderful resource for anyone who gardens outside or decorates and improves air quality inside with plants and/or fresh cut flowers. I can always find unique, affordable and beautiful flowers, pots and plants here. As others have said, they have an amazing selection of "air plants" that thrive with just a little spritzing. Everyone at Adams & Son is helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. And, their glazed pots are glorious. I'm there once a week - they are everything a business should be, a positive influence on the neighborhood and totally customer oriented. They don't "talk the talk" about customer service, they "walk the walk." We need more businesses like Adams & Sons.
Can't wait to see what beautiful seasonal offerings they have today.. -

The owners of Adams & Son are very helpful--I asked for numerous suggestions for various spots in my home that I wanted to fill with plants, and was given spot-on recommendations for each.
The prices are beyond great! I went home with 14 plants for a$45! This includes air plants that were a mere $3 each (at Sprout Home, the same plants were $7 each).
I definitely recommend Adams & Son. -

I used Adams & Son Gardens for my wedding in May. They provided the bridal bouquet, corsages, and boutonnieres.
I contacted this place based on Yelp reviews (thanks everybody!) and was disappointed to find out that they were booked for my wedding date. I decided to try to use them anyways and DIY the arrangements since their prices were so affordable.
When I visited their location to check out prices and options, I was helped by an employee (the owner maybe?) that asked what I was looking for. When I told him the few things I needed for the wedding, he said that the florist (whose name escapes me at the moment) was booked that day but might be able to squeeze in the few arrangements I needed. He left her a note and she got back to me the next day to say that she could fit them in! AND she could do it in my budget. Hallelujah! In person, I would have hugged her (so probably a good thing it was over the phone).
Everything (bridal bouquet, 3 corsages, 3 boutonnieres) was ready on time the morning-of and looked fresh and beautiful - that is, until I brought my bouquet out into the wind and rain that celebrated with us that day...
The service was friendly and helpful and the product was fresh and beautiful. Give them a visit for your botanical needs and wants! -

I'm really sorry to do this, because I love this little gardening shop.
But when I've called no less than 5 times over the course of 2 months and left message after message about wanting to buy more plants for my office, and don't receive any response, what else can I do...
If anyone has advice for another resource for office plants, please let me know!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Well, finally made it down here to check this place out. And to use that over-used Yelpism: "It did NOT disappoint." There, I said it. and I meant it. This garden center is chocked full of deals and good greens. I mean they have huge hanging basket plants for $11.99, more than half of what I would have expected to pay anywhere else. I sailed through like and kid-in-a-candy-store crossed with a bull-in-a-china-shop. Thankfully, you can't break plants too badly. The oldies were on the stereo, and the incense was wafting through the little jungle, giving a nice hippie throwback theme to my shopping spree. I lingered and I touched. I tweaked and I sniffed, and I walked out of there with plants and flowers and veggies for my teensie Ratatouille garden. It's going to be crowded in there once things start to grow. Those chubby eggplants will be taking up all the space.
Adams & Sons has very nice people and plants and their prices are really the best around. Take California down there (if you are north.) It's easier and less traffic than Western. From the other directions, I don't know what to tell you. Just go.Listed in: Hooray for The Little Guy!, Summer Garden Stuff

This is tied for my favorite nursery in the city (along with Jayson Home & Garden).
After horrible recent experiences at City Escape Garden Center, I decided to give this place a try yesterday and I was blown away.
The staff is THE FRIENDLIEST staff I've ever met. The owner, Tony, is a really helpful fellow and took time to show me the plants I was looking for and was really nice and seemed happy to have me there. His mother, Irene was also helpful when I needed orchid pots, hanging baskets, soil....etc. And their assistant, Nate, is also very helpful.
Their prices can NOT be beat. A flat of annuals was 11 bucks. I bought two flats and a gorgeous hanging basket (same plant in same exact basket was 35 bucks more at City Escape, no joke).
They have a huge indoor space as well with tons of pots, and everything from fresh flowers to incense and orchids. It's a really cool place to get lost in. I was wondering around for well over an hour.
I highly recommend this place. Can not wait to go back. -

Great prices! I was able to get a trio set of flower pots made in Italy (with painted cherries on them) for only $9.99. The plants are affordable, too! I plan to get more next time.
Great service! Everyone that works there is not only friendly and knowledge about all things plants but, very helpful and accessible, too. I'll definitely be back. -

O.K. my secrete is out. This once Mom and Pop family grocery store that has withered the storm of neighborhood change is now a garden and plant store stocked with the most amazing and colorful flora at the most amazing prices. Sure they could rip you off blindly, unmerciless, and coldly like Sprout. But would your family do that to you? This place makes me look forward to spring and they have it all for the average Jane or Joe, to those like myself. Who dream of desert and tropical living and until hard work makes the dream come true , desires to populate their home with the most amazing plants to be had in Chicago.

I bought flowers for me wedding party here.
I must say they did fantastic job!!
I asked them to pick up the flowers from the market whatever they think it works with our color theme and fit in the budget, giving them a deposit two weeks before the party. They asked me a lot of good questions and advices before I paid the deposit.
They picked beautiful flowers which greatly fits in the theme. Their selection was very unique and interesting! -

I have lived in the neighborhood for 12 years, and yet this was my first summer experiencing Adams & Son. They were so helpful loading up my car with mulch, and also were great when I needed help picking out appropriate pots and explaining what type of ground cover to purchase.
Great place, great selection, cool people, and its local - even better. -

This review is solely on the Christmas trees. Great selection of sizes and wreaths, fantastic prices, and good quality. A&S carries balsam trees, which is a great hearty tree with a long shelf life, unfortunately that's all they carry. But these trees look fresh and healthy, far better than some of the tree lots near my house and at better prices.
My husband and I left with an 8' tree for $55 and it's gorgeous. They tied it securely to the roof of our suv and we were off. My only complaint is they didn't have one of those netting machines like the old town gardens place that we purchased from last year. It makes getting the tree down from your vehicle and into your home much easier if it's nice and compact. I could have picked a tree that they still had wrapped up, but I wasn't prepared to gamble on how it looked. As long as we live anywhere near A&S (~15mins) we will come back for many Christmas trees to come.
P.S. They have lovely poinsettia plants inside. -

I really enjoy shopping at this store when I get the opportunity. It's a bit out of the way for me but I don't mind schlepping it to Humboldt Park when I have access to a car. There are plants, pots, planters, fresh cut flowers, all sorts of supplies. It's basically a flower shop/greenhouse/garden center and you can pretty much find all that you need at this location.
Gus is the owners father (if I remember correctly) and has always taken good care of me. He even remembered me (and my name) when I stopped by a year later. Very impressive memory, Gus! :)
I will be back again soon! -

My wife found this place to order center pieces for my 40th birthday party. Personally I'm a guy and really didn't care if she got flowers. My wife helped design them and they were able to create what she wanted and they did look amazing!
My only job was to pick them up on the day of the party. That was easy enough. I met Tony the owner and he was really nice. After getting the flowers, he said, "Have a great night!". I was like um we also have 2 balloon things. He had no idea and checked the file. He immediately started making them. My wife has the worse luck with balloons. Tony worked really hard to make them and he did a great job. My wife was freaking out on the phone because we had a bunch of things we still needed to get done. 12 Balloons later and almost 30 minutes I was back in the car. We were definately a little behind. I was happy the balloons were fresh. Tony was really good and worked really hard to get the order complete.
While here I had a chance to look around and I really enjoyed the feeling of this place. It just reminded me of an old family run store. Great selection of plants. There were plants everywhere. Tony told me it takes 6 hours to water them all. That is alot of watering.
I highly recommend you come here if you are looking for great flowers that are not going to cost you and arm and a leg. We have found our new florist for all of our needs!!! -

My house is full of cacti and it's all because of Adams & Son. I go to Flying Saucer, it's a half an hour wait, I come home with a cactus.
I was never a plant person before coming here and I'm not the sort of person to just wander into a garden center. With Adams & Son, you can't help but stop in if you're walking by. It's like a magnetic force.
Pick a plant, any plant, and whoever you happen to run into at the store can tell you how much light and water it needs, and anything else you could possibly need to know. Which is really important if you're someone who can kill a plant just by looking at it, like me. -

What can I say that hasn't been said? These guys are less expensive than that other super posh garden shop just down the street on Grand, and they are so family nice! In spring they feature a well-edited selection of things you definitely need to plant in your garden (or in a container on your window sill, or in a container that gets just enough light). I love that they are just down the street from me, making the hauling of bags of planting medium and compost so much more convenient.
Don't ever leave the neighborhood, Adams family! -

Since finding a job was a little harder than I had expected it to be, I decided I needed a little project for my afternoons. I am very lucky to have a sister who cooks (for me!) and what better way to thank her than to give her fresh herbs to use!
The first time I went to Adams & Son, it was specifically to get some information about pricing and what sort of time and effort would be needed for this project. I know absolutely nothing about gardening and wanted to make sure I wasn't getting in over my head. Right away, a young good looking guy (who honestly I would not expect to see in a gardening store, perhaps 'son of Adam'?) answered all my questions and eased my doubts. He broke down (dumbed down?) each step of the process and really took his time explaining. Affordable-check, Easy-check. Couldn't wait to tell sis and see if she was on board!
I went back a couple days later to buy my supplies and get started. Cute Son was not there this time but I received the same attentive help from a woman (wife of Adam?). Just to be clear, I had her re-explain each step, which she did very patiently and was also excited for us to have our own herbs to cook with.
Not to my sisters liking, the cilantro was easiest to grow! Can't wait to go back for more projects! -

Thank heavens for Adams & Sons. I wish I would have known about this place before stocking up on houseplants at Gethsemane when I first moved here - waaayy more affordable. They have tons of succulents, great houseplants, lots of various pots, hanging plant holders, etc. The only thing they didn't have was ... soil. They said they were waiting on a shipment.
The owners were also incredibly nice.Listed in: Broke as a Joke

Well, I finally made it in to Adam's and Sons and it was just as wonderful as I expected. I picked up a gardenia tree, a flowering shrub thing, and an aloe vera plant. They are all fabulous and I left with full instructions on how to care for them.
I'll probably end up killing them anyway, but for now, they are lovely.
They are very knowledgeable, very friendly and not at all pushy. Not to mention the fact that their plants are incredibly reasonable. AND -- when I got injured outside of the store by a crazy kid on a bike, Tony patched me up. It was really nice :)1 Previous Review: Show all »

Wandering home one night, I thought it would be nice to get a plant for my home. It was winter, so the shop's usually plentiful outdoor section was barren, and the front windows were coated from the inside with the mist of a well-hydrated plant shop. Walking in, the shop stretched all the way back to the alley, crowded with the most exotic mix of green things I've seen. It was like walking into the Little Shop of Horrors. And the big agave plant in the front made me jump back a little.
The shop stocks candles and incense, so it smells more like a hippy shop than a green plant store, but the variety is great. Even in the middle of winter, they had a huge basil plant, actually more of a bush, to sell to me. They have a broad array of cacti, herbs, flowering plants, and random odd things that grow.
The prices are impressively low. The guys that run the shop are super friendly and were happy to walk me through how to keep the plants alive and happy. I'd definitely go back. -

In this crowded jungle are all the cheap houseplants you could ever want.
A hanging philodendron the size of a small child? $12! The cool macrame hanging plant ropes with wooden beads? $6! Those cool soil-less plants that look like amoebas? Only $2 each! I swear I've seen those things at *other* nurseries for more than ten a piece...
I've literally decked out my living room in healthy, air-cleaning plants for forty bucks--and the staff was helpful in picking out the fullest plants.
I've had three experiences here worth mentioning:
1) a walk around after breakfast at the Flying Saucer... more of a "just looking" visit. I was happily left to browse.
2) on a tip to fill my new apartment with plants I arrived to find a hand drawn sign that said: "be back in 30 mins." Unfortunately, there was no time of when the employee left--so I waited, waited some more, and left my name and number in the door as I left for Sprout Home. I returned 45 mins later, sans a call, with the place still locked up. I waited for another 20 mins before going home, bitterly holding back a back review.
And now you've read my third. Despite the second incident, it is still worth my five stars.
Home Depot has cheap houseplants--Adams and Son has them cheaper, healthier, and brought to you by a family business. Awesome. -

Adams & Sons Gardens - another great find! After spending my life's savings over the years at Gethsemane Garden Center, I can now rest easy knowing we have found THE place for reasonably priced flowering plants, containers, herbs, pots and other gardening accoutrement. Great selection of tomato plants especially the heirloom varieties - my beloved was in her glory and had a hard time making a decision.
The owner was very friendly and helpful as was his dad who said "oh, you will find us on Yelp - people love us on Yelp." That gave me quite a chuckle. They are also a florist and have a good selection of fresh cut flowers at very reasonable prices.
My third five star review in 30 mins - I must be feeling generous. Next thing you know I will be collecting unicorns and Precious Moments figurines. -
Review from Brent W.
I've been going here since they opened a few years back and they continue to increase in both quality and quantity of all things gardening. It's right around the corner from where we live so it's extremely convenient and the fact that they are very nice and helpful doesn't hurt one bit...plus it's a family run business so you actually feel good about spending your money there, knowing it's going to people who have a passion for their product and invested in its success.
Outside of all the outdoor herbs, plants, flowers, containers and vegetables (*see my Pics in their profile*) they are also a florist. Great for when you want to get some roses and the like for your lady "just because" or to liven up your home.
Bottom line, great store run by equally great people with a nice selection of goods at reasonable prices.Listed in: Hidden Gems

I'm a beginning gardener and so the advice I can get when I make purchases is invaluable. There isn't a question I've asked any of the workers here that they weren't able to answer pleasantly and thoroughly. I can't stress of unbelievably nice and knowledgeable they are, especially when I'm describing how my plant died and they offer up a diagnosis. It turned out I sun-burned my aloe vera to death.
The only thing I can grow with remarkable success (by default) are succulents so I'm a sucker for aloe veras and jade trees, which they have excellent specimens of for really cheap. A foot tall and plump aloe vera plant is only $6.99 here! They also have an excellent selection of baby cacti for as cheap as $1.99 and they're a beautiful and wide selection.
I'm a gardening cheat. I'm really terrible with seeds and starting things inside. Luckily all their starter plants are of remarkable and affordable quality, and buying it from here guarantees I can find out how not to kill the plant. -

I must thank Adams and Son for giving my black thumb a new lease on life. I had pretty much given up on growing any plants at home, but the friendly sales staff here made me feel like bad plants can happen to good people. Armed with a bunch of tips on how not to kill my green friends, I left the store with two new potted plants. And I'm happy to report, that four months later, my new houseplants are still thriving! Thanks guys!
Update: Five months in, one of my houseplants was fading, and I took it back in for advice...as usual, these guys rock! Got me and my plant back on track.Listed in: Please Enter Here...

Cute little florist/greenhouse in my hood with a very, i repeat VERY cute florist to boot. I go here weekly to buy fresh flowers for my place and I've always been greeted by fast, friendly, and competent service. Ok so I go in to look at the eye candy too, but the greenhouse has great prices on all your gardening needs - I also purchased some chives, parsley, and basil here as well.

Why didn't I learn of this place last year, when I ended up spending over 100 on some plants for my deck garden?!
I really appreciate that this place is a great flower shop without being trendy or overpriced. Granted, I'm always impressed by the more upscale shops like Flora and Bloom and other one-word flower shops that are very elegant and just-so, but it's so nice to have a place that is less worried about looking fancy or more worried about having a wonderful, affordable selection of plants.
What a gem this place is. I wandered in after picking up a cupcake from Tipsycake, just wanting a handful of flowers to celebrate spring. The florist was incredibly nice and knowledgeable, and the store--oh my! It doesn't look like much from the street, but the store is huge and has a great, affordable collection. I got a bunch of daffodils, 2 irises, and a small potted plant for my cubicle for under 10 dollars.
I will definitely be back there soon, where the florist tells me they have a huge outdoor slection as well in the warmer months. -

The selection and prices at Adams & Son are great. From everyday houseplants to fresh flowers and some more exotic plants -- this place is fantastic. It has really added something special to California Avenue.
As some may remember: Before a nursery, Adams and Son had a little grocery store in the spot. It was really not great -- but I frequented the place because the owners are THE nicest folks around. Always friendly and warm. The nursery seems to be a perfect fit for this sweet family. -

Adams and Son Gardens is a shiny gem in the Humboldt Park area! I recently stumbled upon this place a few months back on the way home from work and now refuse to buy flowers from any other establishment. This is a family run store that has been at this location for many years, it used to be a grocery store but a few years back they decided to change it to a flower shop.
They are very helpful and friendly here and have quite a vast array of knowledge of flowers and plants. Adams and Sons Gardens stock a wide wide variety of flowers in addition to seasonal items such as pumpkins, Christmas trees, wreaths, etc. at a great price. If you have a green thumb this is definitely a destination for you! -

Anyone else tired of going to the homogenized, corporate, big box place to get flowers or plants? Or for that matter the "boutique" stores trying to sell you pot of basil for $5??!!
Listen if you want some the best customer service,(not kissing up) a great selection and with it being in the 'hood, then this is most definitely the place to go. Tony is the whipper snapper that says he runs the place but we all know better!

WOW. I LOVE THE ARRANGEMENT!!! I love it so much I had to yell it at you. My bf, who is now the fiancee, got flowers from here the night he proposed. It was part of this elaborate proposal scheme and once we got over the craziness of actually being engaged, he told me about this place.
He said that the owner here was AMAZING. The service he provided, the amount of care he put into the arrangement and the overall experience was worth considering them to do our wedding!!!! And, this was day two of being engaged! That's how much he loved them! LOL.
Seriously though, the fiancee doesn't really go on and on about service he receives at different places unless it was exceptional. The fact that he brought it up two days later goes to show just how much he appreciated Adams & Sons.
Please help do your part to keep neighborhood businesses alive and patronize this place, the arrangement I got was the most beautiful I've ever received. -

We had a really good experience buying some plants here earlier in the summer. The people were really nice and helpful, and did a great job re-potting a split leaf philodendron (aka "delicious monster") we bought.
Or so we thought, until a few weeks went by and the philodendron kept getting paler and less healthy. After moving it around to a bunch of different places--which was fun, seeing as the monster is a BIG plant in a very big, heavy pot--we finally decided to try re-potting it ourselves and discovered that the guy at Adams & Sons had used way, way too much soil, packed way too tight. We removed about a third of what they used, and now (a few weeks later) the plant is doing much better.
But, I don't want to minimize all the other great reviews or say this place sucks because they made a small mistake potting this one ginormous plant. Generally this is a great local place, a little crazy inside, but with a great selection, decent prices, and friendly people. -

I love this little garden spot ont he corner of Thomas and California. I had a four-acre garden in Michigan and was looking to make over the tiny courtyard here. In Michigan, Home Depot is still evil and overpriced but at least the plant selection is alive and fresh. In Chicago, the Home Depot is evil, overpriced, and everything is dead or dying.
But that's another review!
I got lost driving home and stumbled u pon this gem, this absolutely perfect in every way, small-town-shop-in-the-big-city haven of flowers and plants. I love it. They were even kind enough to accept my check because it was the first time I'd been there and didn't know they were cash or credit only.
And yes, Misi P, Adams and his Son are very nice to look at, too! -

I've shopped for garden flowers and herbs for years. Adams & Son Gardens has the best prices and service, hands down. People from all over the city were in line with me. This place is great: helpful staff, huge selection, affordable prices. We went last weekend and got tons of vegetables and herbs for the porch, even a lime tree. When my wife asked them if they could deliver a bag of soil (we were on the bus), the guy behind the counter was honest with us and said we could probably just carry it. I thought that was awesome- they could have made some extra cash off us. I'm knocking down one star because we discovered bugs on one of our pepper plants a few days later. We will definitely be back in the fall for bulbs.
Update: After writing this review, Tony from Adam and Sons emailed me to apologize for the pepper bugs and offer us a free plant next time we stop by. How awesome is that? Adams and Sons gets their star back. -

I love this store!
Anyone who doesn't love this store must be crazy. They are completely stocked with every type of plant you could dream of, most of the time. And, even in the winter you can find some great plants. They are extremely friendly, and their prices are great. If you have any questions about your plants, don't hesitate to ask, they have always steered me in the right direction.
And, the store has a cat! I love when stores have animals to pet while you're there. You can tell that the family in charge really loves their store and their customers, you will not get that kind of service anywhere else (such as Home Depot, etc...). I will always go to Adams and Son before anywhere else! -

Very happy with the wedding flowers we got from Adams & Son. We ordered bouquets, boutinnieres, a ceremony centerpiece, table centerpiece flowers, and a floral comb for my hair. Irene is so nice, patient, and super easy to work with. For our first meeting, she sat with me for an hour showing me pictures and getting ideas for what I wanted. I told her right away that I'm not a big flowers person, so I didn't want to spend a lot of money. She showed me what the most affordable flowers were, and I never felt pressure from her or guilt for going this route, which I very much appreciated. I ended up going with stock and daisies for the bridesmaids and mini calla lillies for me. I called Jewel to do a price comparison, and Adams & Son even beat their prices.
Irene is one talented flower arranger. Everything ended up being very affordable because we used less expensive flowers, but her talent for arranging made everything look so elegant, artistic and classy. On the day of the wedding, I was blown away by the arrangements that Irene put together. We got tons of compliments on the bouquets and boutinnieres, and no one had any idea how affordable they were. She also accommodated my request for silk flowers for my mom, who is quite allergic to flowers. The ceremony centerpiece was ginormous!!! I also asked Irene for a flower for my hair, and I expected one stem, but she arranged a few beautifully on a comb with gold wire.
We did splurge more on table centerpieces, opting to go with orchids in a tall vase and submerged in water. The orchids Irene chose for us were not only beautiful, but carefully prepared individually with little water pouches until we were ready to use them. We also went over the table centerpiece design we wanted and she provided us all the necessary florist equipment we needed including weights, floral wire, and green putty. She even put together a sample for us, so we knew what we had to do. She did a lot of prepping, and it was so easy to put everything together.
I'll post pictures when I get them back. I would love to show off Irene's handiwork!
