    "Pretty soon...Carroon's!!" was a common death threat in this town; while Adair Funeral Homes (Tucson-based) has since taken over this Nogales institution, it still hasn't managed to weed out the small-town corruption that often cripples businesses here.

    My grandmother, ever-conscious of the burden on her kin, decided to pre-plan her funeral two decades ago after the sudden death of her husband, picking out her casket, plot, etc. Now crippled with Alzheimers, my mother went down to Carroon's to review her plans, only to find out that the current funeral director was going to charge her an additional several thousand dollars, because "there was no way" they could put together grandma's package today for the price she paid in 1985. So what's the frickin' point of pre-planning?! Mom called corporate (who were aghast) and was promised that once the day comes, she wasn't going to have to pay a dime extra.

    I can't begin to imagine how many ill-informed, grief-stricken people have probably been swindled by the smooth operator types at Carroon's. Charging people extra certainly isn't going back into the business (it hasn't been renovated since the 70s) and lack of competition in town doesn't encourage people to take their business elsewhere. Unfortunately this sort of fraud is quite commonplace in these border towns.
