I've tried a few other barbers/salons, such as 3 Aces, since moving to the city and have always been disappointed with the results. On a friend's recommendation I tried Ada Salon and am so glad I did. Anthony sat with me for a few minutes to make sure he understood what I wanted and even showed me a few sample pictures in those hair stylist books to confirm. Maybe I've just been going to bad places, but it's the first time that's happened to me. Once he starts cutting you can tell he really cares about what he does. He was so meticulous and was concerned about every detail. The result was fantastic. I'll definitely be going back again.
I highly recommend Ada Salon and have nothing but the best things to say about Anthony. -

Since every part of me is basically a lethal weapon, finding a place to get a decent cut in a new city has always been a challenge. Having thick black spikes (naturally) on your head is good for intimidating bros who try to step up at Pacha but not so good when you're trying to avoid looking like the villain in the next Tokyo Drift movie (there was a time and place for that in my life, no more).
Solid cut with minimal instruction and a minimum of bullshit - pretty hard to pull off on a first appointment with me. It's only $25 for a men's cut and shampoo too, meaning this is the only service I've found in NYC that isn't triple the price I was used to paying in SF.
May bump this up to a 5'er if the next 2 or 3 cuts turn out well. -

This is my second visit to Ada. First time around I got my hair cut from Jason. Jason was quite good with his attention to detail and he gave a great bob cut however I wasn't happy with it because it was difficult to maintain, given that I don't style/ straighten my hair and my hair is wavy. A bob was his recommendation. It also grew out very disproportionately and forced me to tie my hair up in a pony tail most of the time, so I decided to wait for a couple of months so I could get a new cut.
I heard about Anthony and Ada's expertise with scissors from these yelp reviews, so I decided to have Anthony cut my hair this time.He straightaway told me that he would level my hair however it would take the next hair cut(after a couple of months) to even out the bob. He clearly knew what he was planning to do and what the result would look like. His skill was apparent by the way he held his scissors and the way he beautifully sculpted my hair- a master artist undoubtedly. The final result was great! I love my hair now and would surely go back to him for my next hair cut. However, I wish that they used lukewarm water to shampoo the hair and that they used some conditioner as well because my hair was bone dry after the hair cut, and my scalp itchy (because of the hot water) and blow drying. So I'm giving them 4 stars. -

I was really happily surprised by my experience with Ricky.
I have cut my own hair for the past 5 years. It's coarse, curly, thin (as in, I've lost some), and short. I've done so because I was so frustrated by people who had no idea how to cut curly hair. And because I don't exactly have funds to waste.
But I decided to take a chance, especially since the price was reasonable. I wanted to reshape my hair a bit so it would grow out a bit like the Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail look. Since my hair is still a little too short for it, I wasn't sure how to do that on my own.
So I got to the place, and neither the receptionist nor shampoo girl seemed to speak or understand much English. In fact, I was the only non-Asian in the whole place. I believe it was Korean they were speaking, but there were blowers going, so I'm not sure. Suffice it to say that, considering native English speakers didn't understand my hair, I didn't have high hopes for clearly non-native speakers who clearly rarely, if ever, saw curly hair! (No, I don't mean any racist disrespect, it's about language and experience with hair types, not race or prejudice!)
So the shampoo girl did give a mean scalp massage. And then I showed Ricky the pictures of my original hair cut, and what I was going for now. He seemed to understand the concept, and explained to me exactly what he was going to do.
I asked him to texturize my hair as well- he seemed stumped by the term. My old stylist used to do this- twirl a piece of hair, and make tiny nips in the big piece, so the different-length pieces increase the texture, and thus fullness, of curly hair. I do it to my own hair. And, since Ricky didn't do it, I ended up doing it today.
So, after he was stumped, and a few other snafus (parting to the wrong side, asking if he should straighten or diffuse it, taking out an electric razor for my neck) I was really scared. For a terrifying 5 minutes I thought I was going to come out of there looking like a cross between a poodle and Blanche from The Golden Girls.
But when he was done I was actually really impressed. He did exactly what I asked- re-shaped it so that it wil grow in the way I want so I can style and cut it from there. It doesn't look insanely gorgeous, but it looks nice. And it's what I asked for. Ricky really did a very nice job, even if I had to perfect a little of the detail myself.
The only star I took off was really just for the fact that some of the peoples' language skills really need work. I felt bad when another girl came in after me and looked terrified while her stylist was asking her boss in their language how to fix the color already in her hair.
And, just a word of warning, apparently their colour is really expensive relative to cuts- I asked how much to cover like 2 strands of grey in front, and it would be $30. Not much, but as much as a cut.
All in all, I think it's an amazing level of service for the price, and I highly recommend it! :] -

THIS IS THE WORST SALON I HAVE EVER VISITED.
I visited Ada Salon on Friday after reading all these other wonderful reviews. The prices seemed reasonable and I thought it would be a nice place to have my hair cut/colored before attending a holiday work party. I had grown out my hair over the past year so it was down my back. I requested a "2-inch" trim (and showed Terri the stylist exactly how much I wanted that to be with my fingers), with a bang trim to update the shape. HE CUT OFF 6-8 INCHES AND NOW I HAVE A SHORT SHORT LAYERED LOPSIDED BOB. WHAT THE FUCK ADA SALON. I stopped him mid-cut to ask him WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING and the owner of the salon came over to help. She immediately stopped him and salvaged what was left, apologizing for him all the way. obviously my cut was free.
THIS IS THE WORST HAIRCUT OF MY LIFE.
NEVER, EVER, EVER GO TO THIS SALON.Comment from Ada L. of Ada Salon 12/28/2011

Jeffrey is my hero. My stubborn porcupine hair is difficult when short, and worse when long! So I gave him artistic freedom to find something that fits my gourd... Lo and behold, I loved the result! Thanks Jeffrey, I love you man.

Being an Asian. I must have an Asian stylist. Searching for a new place in Yelp, came across Ada Salon, read all the positive reviews. Made an appointment with Anthony on a Thursday evening...long story short. I love my haircut by Anthony. He's attentive, professional and a great stylist. The staffs are friendly too. I can't wait to go back.

This is not the worst affordable cut I've ever had, but I've had better. They sent me to shampoo before I spoke to a stylist. Though the shampooer was kind, the shampoo experience was uncomfortable, and I didn't care for the products used. The stylist seemed able to understand me, but did not communicate his own intentions -- the resulting cut wasn't quite what I asked for (more like the stylist's preference based on my request). I'm tolerating the results for now. Anyhow, $25 cut, or $35 if you add a blow dry.

I just got a haircut from Ada Salon - It was $25 for a mens cut w/ shampoo. The stylist, Jeffrey, did an amazing and meticulous job and took his time to get everything just right. He showed me how to style it at the end, and asked me for input a few times during the haircut too -
The only reason this is not an easy 5 stars is that there was a minor language barrier - If I didn't have a photo, it may not have been easy for me to describe what I wanted... That said, J provided a thorough, meticulous, stylish haircut, and made sure it was the one I wanted, for a great price - I will definitely be back - -

Same experience as the previous reviewer -- AMAZING service and quality. I came in because I needed a quick trim/cut for a new job I was starting the next day. I found new favorite salon.
My wash was great (sorry, didn't catch the girl's name) and a truly relaxing, thorough head massage. Anthony cut my hair and it was immediately obvious that he's talented at his craft. I gave him a crude generic description of how I wanted my hair cut and he surpassed my expectations. Excellent stylist.
The rest of the staff was really helpful, welcoming and friendly. Overall, A+ service, A++ quality and talent.
No doubt, this is the place I'm going to get my hair cut from now on.
Thank you, Ada Staff!! -

I've been going to this place since they opened (it's newish...they opened within the past year). I initially stopped in because it's close to my apartment and I keep on going back because they do an awesome job for an amazing price. I need affordable haircuts because I have a pixie that needs to be reshaped every 3 weeks or so. Anthony cuts my hair and he does a meticulous job. He does a great job on my husband's hair too. I also want to note that I recently had an interview and needed a last-minute cut; since Anthony wasn't there, a stylist by the name of Jeff took care of me instead and he did a great job as well. I've found the entire staff of Ada Salon to be super friendly. I also love that they have a punch card that enables you to accrue free haircuts.

Horrible. Horrible. Horrible. I went in yesterday asking for a quick trim. I said absolutely no more than 3 inches (my hair was down past my elbows). Jason showed me the 3 he was supposed to cut and then started in the back so I didn't see what he was actually doing. The next thing I know, he swings a piece over my shoulder- 7 inches at LEAST have been lobbed off my hair. I was in such shock- that has never ever happened to me before! I absolutely hate my hair. When I said I didn't like it he just said that I'd get used to it and I still had to pay. Never EVER go here! They're such greedy assholes that will just do what THEY want to your hair!

It's true!! As a jaded New Yorker, I'm always crossing my fingers whenever I get services first time from a business with great reviews. So, with much trepredation I made an appt for a haircut with Anthony.
He's fabulous! He has great cutting skills and he LISTENS to what you want done. He did EXACLY what I wanted and made some suggestions, and he was ok if I didn't agree w/him.
I asked to cut only 1/2 inch and that what's he did and fixed a problem that other stylists couldn't.
Rush right out and take advantage now - before Anthony becomes a super-star! -

Had an extended business trip to Asia and after a few weeks needed a haircut. Try never to use the services in 5 star hotels but was ruhed for time so spent a crazy amount of $ in Hong Kong and walked out looking like Alfalfa 60 years later.Returned made an early AM appt with ADA- She opened early for me - and walked out looking beautiful - in my opinion at least. This is a comment soley on the haircutting skills of the owner and I repeat.... this girl is an artist.

I haven't had a haircut I was this happy with since at least 2008 or 2009.
I came to see Anthony per yelpers and a friends' recommendation and I was NOT disappointed. He is seriously capable and I absolutely loved that he's not scared to tell you what to do. There's a fine line between a hair stylist being pushy and sharing their expertise, but Anthony listened to what I wanted, told me what he thought and showed me pictures of styles to make sure he understood. I had originally thought of chopping off my hair by quite a few inches because it felt thin and lack lustre but I told Anthony that I really liked long hair and would like to keep it long-ish if possible. He told me it was totally possible and that you just had to know how to cut it. He was absolutely right! I have pretty fine hair that get greasy easily and loses its volume in a day or two but he gave me a cut that oomphs up the body without making it 80's style poofy, and the perfect textured bangs. I loved the results and I'm totally going back to him.
Also, the prices is unheard of in NY as far as I know. I paid $40+ tip for a cut/shampoo/blow dry = AMAZING. -

Me and a friend were walking along and spontaneously decided to get haircuts. I had Ada Salon a few days before and noticed that it was only $25 for a Shampoo/Cut and remembered that both of us were in desperate need of a trim. We walked by and were initially nervous about how empty it was. However, we turned back around and decided to go in and boy am I glad we did.
Right when we walked in all of the staff did their best to cater to and pamper us as if we were in a salon 3 times the price. The service there was simply outstanding, especially considering the price we were paying. Also, since I looked on Yelp as we walked in I realized that first time clients receive 20% off since the salon just opened 2 weeks ago. We walked in expecting a 15 minute trim and bare minimum service, but we were absolutely blown away. Immediately, we were put into robes and our purses and coats were taken and hung, we were offered coffee/tea/water and handed a magazine for the approximately 2 second wait. The shampoo/massage was amazing and after that I had the pleasure of getting my hair cut by the owner, Ada, who was extremely nice and skilled. Although I was only getting a trim, she talked me through the whole thing and made sure to have my approval every step of the way. Both of us even ended up getting our hair styled despite not having any plans that night and our hair came out looking great.
After the 20% discount, the whole experience (shampoo/cut/style) came out to a mere $32 and we realized that we were somehow sucked into a time warp or something, because suddenly it was two hours later. It was such an enjoyable experience, though, that I didn't even realize how long it had taken. It was nice to have great service and someone taking care of you and making sure you get what you want no matter how long it takes. -

I was just here on a business trip and wanted a salon for a mens haircut. Pulled a walk in at 430 and they took me right away. The staff were so courteous and attentive and the stylist was amazingly skilled in cutting. All with a wash and cut for 25$ which was great for NYC. I would highly recommend this salon.

I moved to NYC about a year ago and tried a few not-so-good places before I came upon Ada Salon and Anthony. The price was incredibly reasonable and the cut was great --- BUT I didn't realize how good until over the next couple of weeks it began to grow out. Anthony's cut maintained a nice look through the growing period. I'm impressed, and now a regular at Ada.

I vouch for the three prior ratings. The staff and Anthony are thorough, kind, and dedicated to their patrons. I have had several average haircuts throughout Manhattan from many skilled, but jaded or inexperienced, but enthusiastic stylists. This shop beats them all hands down. All stylists are talented and caring. None of them cheat with generic techniques and all apply precision, experience, and skill in cultivating styles that work well for their client's hair texture, face/head shape. Anthony totally modified one current trendy style to suit my head shape and hair type--it worked great. Upon another visit, another stylist did as well. Ada will be my mainstay. Thank you for continued excellence!

I went here because of the http://yelp.com ratings and they were not wrong! I have had some very bad salon experiences which always makes me very tentative about trying a new place and I am so ecstatic I went here. After a bad highlighting experience last year I was still trying to fix my color, so I finally just decided to color my hair completely for the first time and Jason did a wonderful job! He talked to me and made sure it was what I wanted and then confirmed the color, the first choice was too blonde for me and he suggested a shade darker and now I am in love with this color. It was excellent service and quality for such an affordable price! I will definitely be returning.
