After reading about his "12 ingredients" on his website i was really impressed when i saw one of Geoffrey Gainer's projects in person. His thoughtful and thorough writings were reflected in the details of his design.
The kitchen he designed was innovative and responded to the limitations and history of the residence. There are so many architects who follow trends -- it's refreshing to find someone who brings raw creativity to the task.
The design was efficient and space-saving. Glass cabinet doors contrasted with wood shelves nicely and put dishes on display without looking cluttered. Graceful touches like unique crown molding abounded. -

I am a benefactor of Geoff's architectural work. And personally, it is about light. Early in my collaboration with Geoff I spoke of the afternoon light in my original living room, and how it was always a source of delight and quietude. During our conversations I spoke of many things (I'm Irish and a story teller by nature) which Geoff must have heard. It's as if he dressed a bare set of thoughts using light, then shape, then volume.
Geoff displays his design solution for my home within the portfolio page of his website (check it out). What the pictures don't show is the arching movement of light - the geometric change as the solstice approaches and then wanes. We are in our third year of living in this space. It breaths every day. I am delighted every day. -

Geoff Gainer is the best architect! He remodeled the main living floor of our house and came up with a beautiful solution to a challenge that another architect could not address. He works with the client to understand what was needed and the style we wanted to achieve. Geoff brings his professional advice and judgment but gives the client choices. He turned a narrow clumsy staircase into open spacious steps with easy access. Our kitchen was moved to a much bigger room that was opened up with the addition of skylights. Geoff listens to what you want, is honest and straightforward on what he thinks and works with you to stay on budget. He presented the pros and cons of alternatives, which allowed us to make the best choices. We would definitely hire him again. We highly recommend Geoff - it would be difficult to do better!
Specialties
I specialize in residential additions and remodels, with the occasional foray in to gallery design and commercial work. Daylight and functionally open spaces characterize all of all my work. Finding solutions that are both original and environmentally sensitive is routine. I do my best work when augmenting historic styles not with outright mimicry, but with historically-reflective and gracefully-integrated style from our own day.
History
Established in 1999
Developed to be the kind of full-service firm from which clients can expect individualized attention. Okay, that's pretty much expected of a sole proprietorship. Still, the ideal hasn't changed in my ten years.
