Review from Rachel F.
Wow. Actors really is a professional theatre in every sense. It had been too long since I had been to ATL (the playhouse not the city ;) and I will not make that mistake again. We went to opening night of In the Next Room (the Vibrator Play) and it was everything you could want in a show. Incredible yet simplistic sets, actors that were absolutely their parts to the T, incredible story/writing. You should take someone you know well so you can talk and laugh and talk and laugh afterwords. And talk about literally laughing out loud! Oh dear lord, this play was hilarious. Brilliantly hilarious.
Go. You have until Feb 18. Hurry. Oh and park on the street unless it is a torrential downpour. Shows at 7:30, so street parking is free, but the parking garage right next to ATL is 8$. Whoa. -

Just saw a performance of "The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity" last night and was as expected impressed and wowed. Even more-so I was moved by this excellent story. I really enjoyed the entire cast and performance!
Make sure you make time and go see this excellent production! -

I absolutely love this theatre company. Every show was really intimate with the most amazing sets on stage and I was always impressed by the actors, most of which have starred in one form of Law & Order or another. Yeah, I cheered for the ones that had been on SVU the most, I'll admit it.
I don't know if it was possible to get a bad seat. My favorite production was 'Alice', a tripped up & acrobatical version of 'Through the Looking Glass'. It was phenomenal. The plays/musicals are divided between two theaters. One is completely circular with the stage being in the middle. The other is more like a half circle, but a larger stage and it is where most of the shows take place. It was crazy how excited I was every time I got to see a show. Buy season passes, it's completely worth it. -

We enjoyed "In the Next Room(or The Vibrator Play)" this past Saturday. It closes this weekend but I thought I would share my enjoyment. A well-written and wrought period play of Victorian stifled behavior in the face of moden technology i.e. a "scientific" treatment that is essentially a pre-cursor to today's ubiquitous vibrator. Appropriately funny but a challenge for the actors whom I thought were challenged to portray turn of the century propriety in all its absuridity. It's a show worth seeing.

What's your entertainment taste? Actor's Theatre of Louisville (ATL) has it! This amazing theatre starts with 3 venues under one roof: Black Box, Proscenium stage, and Round Theater. It end's with amazing resident actors and volunteer associates.
I have always had an interest in being apart of theater and ATL is the best place to get involved. This company hires local children every year to be in seasonal shows, it helps actors around the country build equity, it has a huge internship program for learning and growth, it always offers community involvement opportunities, it coordinates with local schools for performances, and it has an amazing original works series called the Humana Festival!
Despite my opinions of shows, ATL is always clean, with cocktails, and it's own bar/restaurant to make a perfect date. ATL selects great seasons and allows everyone to interact personally with the cast. I have run into many actors after the show in the Intermezzo Lounge.
As a note ATL offers two $10 tickets to their season shows if you have never attended ATL before, the theatre also has a new Generation X package for anyone under 30 to buy the full season at 1/2 price. My boyfriend and I saved $250 using the Generation X package.
This is my favorite place to be and I'll be a regular yet! If you ever want to get a show review or attend, send me a message I would love to join you! -

Crud. As my fans know, I like to save my milestone reviews for particularly awesome places, but I somehow got on a reviewing kick and flew right past 250. Anyway, I was saving ATL for my 250th review so please pretend that it received that honor (please please please!)!!!
I've been involved with this theatre in some capacity since 2006 when iI saw a play there with a friend and then was suddenly commissioned months later write for their 2007 anthology play. And I couldn't be happier with that relationship. The staff is the friendliest and have kept in touch since that time, and now they've not only commissioned me for the 2011 anthology but they are also producing the world premiere of my play EDITH CAN SHOOT THINGS AND HIT THEM.
Why should that mean anything to the average theatregoer? Because it's a clear example of how ATL seeks out and nurtures future generations of theatre artists. That means you crazy cool ticket buyers, subscribers, and donors in Kentucky are getting first look at new American work even before folks in "big" theatre towns like New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Minneapolis, and all the rest.
They've got several great spaces; a well-produced, community-centered season (including annual productions of Dracula and A Christmas Carol that locals flock, too); and the Humana Festival of New America Plays, which takes a veritable mob of new voices, performers, and artistic talent away from the coasts for all of Kentucky to enjoy every spring.
And so thank you ATL for starting my love affairs with Sherry Kramer and Alice Tuan; helping fuel my adoration of Naomi Iizuka and Jordan Harrison; and for putting your own staff, apprentice company, and fair city within cuddling distance. I'm pretty much a fan forever.Listed in: You rule!

Seriously, how amazing is it that our random little mid-sized middle American city has a world class theater festival?
If you aren't from Louisville, you should come visit - and definitely come when you can catch some of the Humana Festival of New American Plays. (Although the entire season is always pretty dang good - the Humana Festival is when they'll really knock your socks off)
And for the locals, check out the "Late Seating" events they periodically offer. $10 for music and performance and art - I've been a couple of times and the show has always been surprisingly fun and different. For the price of a movie, this is really a great way to spend a Friday night. (and the cash bar doesn't hurt either) -

Pretty cool place. Well maintained older theater (50's or 60's style?) that has a good cast of thespians. It's not Broadway, but it's still a lot of fun and a lot of love goes into the performances.

It ain't Broadway. We know that.
For what it is (a regional theatre with some excellent backing), it is fantastic. Sharp, smart productions from top notch talent.
Too bad they all wanna go to Broadway.Listed in: Enlightenment

Louisville is an above average performing arts town, and a pretty darn good theater town, and at the center of that civic aesthetic is Actor's Theater. One of the best, if not the best, regional theaters in America. Based on year-in, year-out excellence. From the perennial classics like A Christmas Carol, to the Humana Festival of New American Plays, the convenient ticket packages, Actor's has been there my entire life to suggest one look closer and deeper in evaluating this town.
