Raced through here the other day on the way to an appointment. Yummy berry smoothie. Super friendly gal behind the counter. Keeping at 3 stars however because they were out of certain ingredients and the store was kind of disorganized in it's layout. But good service makes up for a lot :)

OK. Downgrade to 4 stars. I really dislike that they gave into the self-serve fad that's going around the country.
I miss somebody handing me my samples and serving me a $2 kiddie cone.
It's not unique anymore, and I wouldn't make a trip out here for it since there is a plethora of frozen yogurt (that's right, fro-yo is not a word) around PDX.
Don't misinterpret this though - the frozen yogurt is still delicious and the staff is fine and dandy, it's just not what it used to be.Listed in: Coffee

Generally speaking, I would rather have a mediocre gelato or scoop of decent ice cream, then seek out a frozen yogurt (i also refuse to call it "fro yo) place.
However, when this place first opened, the better half and I went to check it out...something about a two for one...we love the deals. We walked in and it instantly smelled like waffle cones. It took me back to the ice cream shop in Seaside where I first fell hard for my current squeeze.
After I snapped back to reality, I was greeted by the actual owner (plus!) standing behind the counter. Now, I realize that this isn't a rarity in Portland, but it still is nice. The dude was real cool too. He allowed us to try a few of the flavors.
Even the basic flavors were tart and delightful! Plus, at $3-$6, it's WAY better on the pocket book then PIX -

I hate to lower the rating for a place I would call a personal favorite of mine, but in light of what I experienced today I must.
I ordered a medium yogurt with three toppings and get told my total is $5.25. Sure, no problem! Here's my debit card.
"Oh, there's a 25 cent fee for cards," says the guy behind the counter. I look down to a small paper sign taped to the register. I don't remember that being there before in the last year and a half I've been going here. It states that ALL card transactions will have a 25 cent fee attached to them.
"Is this new?' I ask. "We've been doing it for about a month," he replies.
I HATE when places do this, but I can usually deal with it if they have something like a $5 minimum for card transactions without a so-called fee. Even still, these "fees" being charged by the establishment are more than likely a violation of the contract with their credit card processing company and completely a turn off. The fact that Active Culture is charging this "fee" on ALL transactions, regardless of how high or low is infuriating to me. I'm already paying for your services and overhead costs by being a patron. I have been coming in at least once a month, if not more, in a year. If the card processing fees are that high I'd much rather you just raise prices or go cash only. I had cash today, but I won't always have it on me...so I guess I'll be getting my frozen yogurt elsewhere from now on.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Believe it or not, this is the first time I've ever had zengurt. I think. No, I'm pretty sure.
I've always thought: Why? There's ice cream, why eat zengurt?
Well. It's okay. I mean, it was good and all.
I'd still rather have ice cream.
We dropped the Yelp bomb on homie late. I mean I rolled in a bit after the main body at closing time minus one minute. Was there huffing? Puffing? Eye rolling?
Nope.
And someone (Laura?) said homeboy ID'd us as Yeeps. How freakin' awesome is that? -

As a general rule, I'm not really much of a froyo person, but I could definitely see myself coming here very often if it wasn't so out of the way for me.
I had the strawberry yogurt with strawberries on it because, y'know, I'm creative like that. It was totally delicious. The yogurt was tart and tangy but not too sour, and the strawberries added a nice additional burst of freshness.
If it was more convenient, I'd probably be coming back just about every day of summer to try out a new combination. And I'd probably go broke, because this stuff ain't exactly cheap. -

I have been waiting patiently to dip a toe into the world of frozen yogurt [aren't they calling it zengurt these days?]. We all know I'm not trendy, but I was eager to be a sheep in this one. My frozen yogurt experiences had been pretty limited to the cheap, but oh so tasty, stuff you can get at Costco, and the Burgerville smoothies.
I'm not going to lie. I'm not really a sweets person. I'm not even a really big 'super cold stuff' person. Given the choice of cake or ice cream, 99% of the time I'm going to go with cake. That's just how I am.
However, I do have an affinity for healthy stuff, and last I checked probiotic cultures, fat-free, and low calories all fit that bill. I've been known to go through a half a huge tub of Nancy's whole milk honey yogurt in a single sitting. I like the tart stuff. I like it plain. It's unique, and it's crazy addicting.
Insert Active Culture. A huge group of us bombarded Mr. Yogurt Guy five minutes to close. Instead of shooting death glares, he handled it with more class than I'm sure I would have mustered. A handful of flavors accompanied with a handful of different toppings.
I went with the child size plain + Heath topping. God knows I had to ruin the healthiness somehow [as if the three beers and sausage dog at dinner before that didn't do it already]. Really, I should have just stuck with the plain stuff. It didn't need the candy, and honestly the flavor didn't really mesh well with the tangy flavor the yogurt had to offer. I'll have to remember that next time. Assuming there is a next time.
Overall I wasn't floored by it. I wasn't jumping for joy. I wasn't drooling either. I was, however, convinced by Laura to do push ups out on the sidewalk. I can neither confirm nor deny that it happened as a result of the yogurt though. Maybe it makes you active after all... -

Did you know that not all frozen yogurts have active cultures in them (even the tart ones)? Apparently not even at Bleuet.
The yogurts at Active Culture actually have active cultures in it, which is good for your health and aids in the digestive process. So eat up, Gabe C., and all you other lactose intolerants!
And, theoretically, that means that you could go gorge yourself on a large, let the cultures help your sore stomach, and then go back for more an hour later. Mmmm! I told you I was a froyo ho!
And while you're at it, grab a frequent buyer card. Six froyos, and the seventh is free.
You guys are cool.
And you just earned that extra star!Listed in: Death by Dessert

After having Bunk Sandwiches, we walked over to Active Culture Frozen Yogurt for something sweet. Once impressive thing about this place was the wide variety of flavors and toppings. There was also many flavors you could ordered swirled together. Thats what I did.
I got the Banana and Ghirardelli Chocolate. It was soft and each flavor was very delicious. This place was fantastic. http://www.yelp.com/bi... -

Keep in mind that I don't have that much of a sweet tooth regarding the star rating. Active Culture is probably really awesome to some folks but it's a solid A-OK in my book that I probably won't be racing back toward anytime soon. Especially at $3.25 for a small size yogurt. Crikey! You could say, "I don't give a damn about FRO-YO, HOE! Or... schmoe... or....
On a serious note, there's about ten flavors (FRO-YO like a MOFO?) and apparently they change often and there's a ton of mix-in's including apple pie filling (believe it) and capn'crunch and other such traditional favorites. Atmosphere? It's your standard modern yogurt shop. Green walls, weird yet cool art. My friend Roman works behind the counter and is down to get your mouth accustomed to what they've got to offer via sample cups.
Keep in mind, some of the treats are fairly rich - by the end of a "small" cup you might find yourself wishing you went with the child size. -

Frozen yogurt goes best with:
A) A group of Yeep friends, some of whom may or may not ghost ride the whip, with late-night sweet tooths
B) Post-dinner idleness on a summer evening with JB, feeling as if all the time in the world exists to find patterns in the Fruity Pebbles
C) A score of upsetting images that depict laceration, concussions, and potential decapitation, all out of the school of tough love
D) All the above
Extra credit to the awesome man behind the counter, whose iPod sounds eerily similar to mine while he appeases the sugar monster. Flattery and froyo get you everywhere. -

I guess frozen yogurt is making a resurgence. Good thing I guess. When I'm craving something ice-creamy, usually I go for Ice Cream. Frozen Custard is a great alternative but let's face...you just went and made a bad thing worse (healthwise) by going with custard. It's not like Frozen Yogurt goes so far in the opposite direction in that regard...but if you are going to go with something in that category it's not a bad compromise.
I had a plain peaches and cream with no added toppings cuz I'm simple like that. I dug it. I'm allergic to milk so most anything dairy is going to turn my belly to varying degrees of severity. Never stops me from eating it however. But I don't eat ice-cream very often because it's pretty much the worst thing I can do for said allergy. Maybe it was those active cultures or something...but I felt alright after eating it. Nice painless way to get my ice-cream fix without paying the ice cream price. But...it's not ice cream. It's not custard. It's frozen yogurt. Dig?
On a side note, a large group of us arrived 5 minutes before closing. We all took them to go, but the guy at the counter couldn't have been more accommodating. I hate popping in somewhere just before closing...especially knowing that feeling from my experiences working in restaurants...video stores...it's always that night where no one has been around for an hour or two...dead. Then suddenly, 2 minutes before closing someone pops in...right as you are getting close to bailing...and stays way past closing. Not only did he get everyone squared away from our group, he took another couple groups after us. Very cool. -

Portland, OR
So everyone has their own preferred method for trying to beat the heat - when it's in the 80's all I need is a mini cup fro-yo from Active Culture and I'm good to go for a few hours.
They have some of the most fantastic flavors, always at least 6 fresh, made in house options to try. They pair up the flavors, so that of the 6, there are also 3 different blended varieties you can enjoy. Recently I've enjoyed some really outstanding Peach, Apricot, and Ghiradelli Chocolate yogurts. The Raspberry tasted a little artificial, almost like a soft serve variety of something I could have bought in my grocer's freezer, but still it was pretty good, and as far as frozen treats go you can't get much healthier stuff than what they're churning out at Active Culture!
Their fro-yo is always fat free, but still somehow comes across as pretty creamy, with a nice smooth texture, which is perfect for your vanilla, chocolate, and peanut butter flavors - even the fruit varieties are creamy. I usually prefer the more crystalline, frozen ice-style, sorbet like fruit yogurts, but when the flavors pop as much as they do at Active Culture, I can overlook that.
And don't forget, lot's of great toppings that range from granola, cereal and fresh fruit, to chocolate chips, gummi bears, and nuts - though with such delicious fro yo I often don't need any toppings to doll it up!
For fresh, homemade fro yo the prices are pretty outstanding. A little cone is like $2 and a mini cup is less than $3. They carry pre-packed containers, or you can buy larger tub and have them fill it right there so it's still soft when you get home! Scrumptiously aromatic fresh waffle cones are also available, but I never get them. Waffle cones are better in theory than they are in real life, as my fro yo usually melts and drips out the bottom before I can finish it!
In addition to fro yo, they make up some real fruit smoothies and amazing looking root beer floats - those these seem to be not quite as good a value as the straight up fro yo!
So, while this is enough to beat the heat for me in the 80's, when you ratchet the mercury up another 25 degrees I don't think that even this frosty treat is enough...though I may see if they'll fill up the bed of my truck with some chocolate-peanut butter swirl, strip down and dive right in!Listed in: SE Portland

Pssssttt....Hot news..
There's a brand spankin' new yummy frozen yogurt place in SE Portland. It's at the Grand Central Bowl building, next to Sparky's Pizza.
The menu is pretty basic frozen yogurt. I tried their Blackberry and Vanilla combo. Medium size is $4. Extra topping is 50 cents. Since I'm a HUGE fan of Gummi Bears, I got that for my topping. It's the best $4.50 cents that I've ever spent for frozen yogurt.
They have seating inside and seating outside. The guy behind the counter is friendly and patiently waited for me to picked out my topping. It was a really hard choice between gummi bears and almonds...but of course the bears won... -

Lame unwarranted lower ratings on here. Rest assured folks, I was in here yesterday and the $.25 credit card fee is now for all orders under $5. And to the person who was pissed they couldn't get toppings on the cone: there is a sign that says toppings are for cups only.
This is still the most awesomely creamy non-fat frozen yogurt across the land. Now equipped with a pimp couch you can lounge on whilst licking yo cone.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I can kind of see the building this place is in from my apartment, which means that I could just walk over there and get some frozen yogurt. I'm more of an ice cream kind of guy, but this place makes some good stuff and has a bunch of crazy flavors. I had something called Limamba (lime and raspberry) and it was tasty.
I give 'em props for being cool when, 5 minutes before closing, a bunch of us Yelpers arrived for some frozen delights.Listed in: Buckman! (Inner SE)

"Hey look, here come some people who share your interest in frozen yogurt!"
I had to pry my grinning self away from furiously consuming my waffle cone for a moment to turn and look at who was coming in. A gaggle of kids skipped through the door and began shoving their dirty little faces against the glass covering the toppings bar (thank god that glass is there, for so many, many reasons). I double-glared at the beau for finding a similarity between myself and the snot-nosed fro-yo loving children AND for making me take a precious breath from my yogurt ingestion.
When a craving hits for something creamy, sweet, and wrapped in the pretense that it might actually be somewhat healthy--there are ermm...thousands of actual active cultures all up in this bitch, y'all--ooooh yeah, this is the stuff. Why try anything else when this place fulfills all possible requirements? I think what cemented the deal was trying this yumminess even before the store opened, back when they had a booth at the Rose Festival. The guys who owned it were just so damn pumped and passionate about how their yogurt could practically save the world. All I can say, is one lick and I, too, am a believer. -

Noisy. That pretty much sums this place up. Not in a good, lots of people enjoying their yogurt kind of way either. I'm talking about roaring yogurt machines placed out in the open. These things should be insulated behind walls like in the other places. In addition to that, the yogurt is drippy and not cold enough. Again, probably because these machines should be insulated. There are many better choices in Portland.

Review from Ashlee H.
This yogurt is seriously good.
I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that you're pretty safe ordering any flavor here and you'll get something excellent, but I can't stop myself from ordering the Pumpkinilla (pumpkin/vanilla swirl) every time I walk in. It's so creamy and delicious and tastes just like pumpkin pie if it'd been made into soft serve ice cream.
And yeah, it does taste just like soft serve ice cream. If that's not your thing, this probably wouldn't be your place. I like my frozen yogurt to to have that sort of consistency and flavor, and Active Culture doesn't disappoint. How they make this stuff non-fat is a complete mystery to me, but I applaud these people and their fancy yogurt-making skills.
I think I'll be frequenting this establishment quite a bit when I finally need to cut down on all the mac n cheese and crepes. Recommended to be sure! -

I just tried this place over the weekend. They have six different flavors: two per machine so that you can get each flavor individually or swirled together in a combination. Apparently, the flavors change each week too. I got a medium bluenilla (tart blueberry and vanilla) with two toppings and thought the price was well worth what I got compared to other fro yo shops in town. They are open late and their website lists flavors for the week.

My wife really likes this place but it's too creamy for me. The good is that they've got a lot of flavors - they had like 8 or 9 last night on the menu.
When I'm looking for yogurt, I'm thinking clean, refreshing and tart. This stuff is more like icecream. It just feels heavier than others. I'm sure it's good healthy yogurt and all, but just not my thing.
I'll stick w/ crazyberry and skinnydip... maybe even after pinkberry moves in i'll stick w/ these two... maybe. -

Just went to this new establishment this evening. Owned by a three friends, this is a great place! Great yogurt, all non-fat (except peanut butter), and great flavors!! Tonight they had strawberry tart, mango tart, mint, chocolate, chocolate-mint, plain tart, and several others. Its priced really reasonably--and they aren't afraid to fill up the containers they are serving-which isn't true for the other froyo places in PDX. They also have larger containers in the freezer ready for quick to-go orders! WORTH EVERY PENNY!
Interior has plenty of seating and a cool, relaxed vibe. Overall, this place leaves all the other froyo places in PDX in the dust! -

Seriously, go to active culture... Even in the winter.
The people that own it are awesome and the yogurt can't be beat. They update their flavors (and their website) weekly. The combo flavors are the best, and the toppings are top notch. The guy even went out and hand picked huckleberries. Sh-yeah. Huckleberries.
It is my personal mission to make sure this place doesn't go out of business. Join the "Cold Weather Fro Yo Club" -

Portland, OR
This place was good and definitely worthy of a second trip if were in the neighborhood -- but just not an overwhelming favorite when it comes to fro-yo.
They had a decent array of flavors, I ended up going with their tart and mint. The mint was pretty dang good, might have been a little too intense for me. It seemed to drown out the tart for the most part. I don't know what it was exactly, but I like Yo Cream's orginal tart much more than Active Cultures.
I think I enjoy the setup of making your own fro-yo concoction, maybe because it adds to the whole experience. I've got mixed feelings about charging $.50 per topping as well. It'd be nice to see them have some sort of menu like Pinkberry where you could purchase just a bowl of yogurt or, for example, a medium comes with 3-4 toppings. They don't have too many topping to choose from, but they do have the only three you need: rainbow sprinkles, strawberries, and Captain Crunch.
A fun little fro-yo joint in Portland, but I would much prefer Swirl in Hawthorne or Yo Cream near the airport. -

This is my new favorite spot for a cool treat. I treat myself once a week to these guys and have taken one of the kids there for a lunch and we all agree it is awesome. In fact we think it is better than our local place in Lake Oswego.

I'm falling fast for the frozen yogurt craze.
Those who know me may not be surprised, seeing as I tend to fall in and out of love with things fairly quickly. But this love is different I tell you. This frozen yogurt, it actually tastes like yogurt (crazy thought). So not only are you eating something good for you (all of the yogurts are non-fat, except for the peanut butter), but it tastes amazing!
I sampled both the plain tart and the peanut butter, and both were divine. I settled on peach and was in love. I just downed a blueberry green tea bubble tea at Townshend's and am already ready to make a trip back to active culture. And the guy working knew about Yelp, how great is that?
They had some cool toppings too (Fruity Pebbles anyone?). The child size is gigantic, so I would go to for that unless you're absolutely ravenous.
Wish they had a few more flavors to choose from, but for a homemade operation, it was impressive. -

I am a big fan of self serve yogurt, however I was not too impressed by this place. FIrst off there were VERY limited flavors to choose from, second the yogurt came out extremely melted. They did have a good selection of toppings to choose from and the high ceilings and interior decoration added a nice ambiance. However, their machines were very loud and interrupted simple conversation. I would not recommend this place as there are way better places to enjoy frozen yogurt in portland.

i love this frozen yogurt place so much. i went there today b/c i wasn't feeling so good. they have the yogurt machines so you can help yourself. they didn't have that the last time i was there. i tried the angel food cake yogurt which was delicious. i decided on the tart plain and put some raspberries and colored sprinkles on it. then i got a pint of the tart blueberry to go.
it's the best frozen yogurt i've ever had. i love how they have tart and sweet flavors. the raspberries were fresh and not frozen. and the pint i got this afternoon is nearly gone. oh yeah, and the yogurt has the active acidolpholis in it. that's a nice plus.
and the yogurt is 45 cents an ounce. that's very reasonable for delicious and healthy frozen yogurt. -

This place would technically get 3.5 stars, but I'm feeling generous.
They mix the flavors up weekly which is really nice if you're a fan of randomness. The toppings, I believe, are static but they are also really good so no complaints there.
The only thing I think could use some work is the yogurt itself. Not the flavor, but the fact that it doesn't stay frozen or solid for very long. I know this might seem like a ridiculous complaint since frozen stuff, yknow, melts. But, it does get frustrating when the last 15% of your dessert becomes soup.
Active Culture is definitely a great spot, and one you should check out, but the melt-y issue is one that stops me from being a regular. -

I've been on a bit of a fro-yo kick lately. Last night, I stopped by Active Culture and was completely impressed. Yes, their yogurts are very healthy, but they're also really tasty as well--two things that don't often go together. I tried the pumpkin yogurt with Butterfinger sprinkled on top. Wow. Super creamy, smooth and delicious.
In addition to stellar yogurt, Active Culture has really great digs. Most yogurt shops are cramped, but Active Culture is spacious and bright. It's got a funky retro-vibe: orange leather and chrome chairs, wooden tables, polished concrete floors, high ceilings, funky orange lamps, and other great touches.
The service is also a departure from other shops: friendly, informative and interactive. Who knew? -

First of all, to those people that say YoCream's original tart is better are morons. Active Culture uses YoCream as their yogurt, so it tastes the same.
Second, the shop recently got new owner's and you can tell. I used to love coming in but I think I might have to find a new place. I was in a week or two ago and noticed they no longer use fresh fruit. It's frozen and gross looking. Also, the shop looked pretty dirty. I don't know if it was just a busy day or what, but it wasn't clean.
Hopefully the new owner's can get their act together or else they're regular's are going to stop coming, like me. -

I have made a commitment to frozen desserts- I have an ice cream tattoo on my ankle. I take this shit seriously. Tonight, after dinner, I wanted a little something sweet. Not as sweet and heavy as ice cream, but sweet and cold none the less. I passed by Active Culture on the way to work one morning and made a mental note to head in sometime. Tonight was that sometime. We got there seriously RIGHT before they closed, and I felt bad (I used to hate when people did that when i worked retail) but the guy was super nice about it. I had a blackberry tart yogurt with peaches on top of it. HAAYYYYYYY. It was perfect- not overly sweet, cold, creamy, awesome. For all the people who talk about how its not as good as Pinkberry, who cares... Pinkberry has two flavors- white and green tea. While they are both delicious, sometimes a girl wants some peanut butter, you know?

New York, NY
Three stops to Active Culture in one week attests to our addiction to frozen yogurt. The Blackberry was fruity and tart. The Chocolate and Peanut Butter were classic. The Key Lime was our favorite. The ice crystals were predominantly larger in the fruit flavors, but that's normal. The Chocolate was really smooth and highly desirable. Active Culture's encouraged patrons to bring in Food Bank contributions for some free frozen yogurt delights throughout much of last week. We couldn't help but notice that Active Culture also has some of the best servers behind the counter. They have comfortable outdoor seating available. We haven't any bad things to say about this place!
