This is a wonderful place to fill your BBQ propane gas tank and to rent tools.
The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and didn't mind spending extra time with me to understand the nature of my DIY remodeling project, recommend the right tools, and walk me through how to use them. While tool rental prices initially seemed high to me, when I got there and realized that the tools are in tip-top shape, many even brand new, I knew I am getting my money's worth. Much better than buying a low-end tool and storing it.
I've also been refilling my propane gas tank at Action Rentals for a while now. Used to exchange tanks at the gas station (Blue Rhino) but refilling it at Action Rentals turned out to be almost half the price.
I'm so glad there's such a great place in San Francisco. Thank you Action Rentals. -

Great place very helpful staff and the prices are fair. Can't ask for more than that

I went here because of the reviews and they were right.
Getting my own new propane tank filled was as easy as it gets! I would rather have my own tank filled than switch it out for a potentially faulty one. Parking is available and customer service was prompt and friendly. -

These guys really get how to run a business when their procrastinating customer leaves a chair rental to an event at the last minute. As soon as I pulled up into the parking lot at around 5 pm, two helpful employees asked me what I was renting, and were loading the chairs in the back of my Jeep before I signed the contract. (which took less than 3 minutes because my files were already in the system)
And they nice. Very nice. -

Meth cooks are getting the propane tanks from the exchanges at Wal-Mart, Kroger,Gas Stations etc. and emptying them of the propane. Then, they are filling them with anhydrous ammonia ). After they are finished with them, they return them to the store then I go and exchange and use...... BOOM BOOM blow up no grill AHHHHHH!
Thanks for a reliable propane refill station in San Francisco! just buy an empty tank and refill at Action!
Plenty of parking and everyone that works there is super nice :) -

Great place to go for a quick propane refill. The people who work there are also really helpful and are super quick. Next time I need to rent some tools or party supplies I know where I'll go.

I am redoing my yard and needed to rent a rototiller. The tool library in SF is closed for some reason. I called Home Depot to check out their rental prices and I found Action Rentals as well. They were cheaper and close since I live in the city. They were VERY helpful, great service, knowledgeable. I had a great experience renting from them and will for sure rent from them again.
They have an amazing selection of items to rent from. They helped us load and unload the car. Great resource to have in the city! -

A great rental service! I wanted to rent a long table for my BF's surprise birthday party/beer pong tournament. Sam was really helpful and when I protested the $100 delivery, he agreed to give me the $10 neighbor delivery fee (I live 3 blocks from here).
They delivered the table exactly on time and picked it up exactly on time as well. Our transaction went smoothly and I'll definitely consider them if I need tables, chairs, or a grill. -

With a name like Action Rentals, I expect to be able to buy x-ray-vision goggles, or a jet pack, or some sweet red latex knee-high boots here. (Hey, no one said superhero fashion was hetro.) Sadly, you can't do that. As far as I know. But what you can do is get your propane bottle filled, and buy grill pieces, and also rent (or buy) all manner of useful tools, like floor sanders, concrete finishing tools, and whatnot.
I could do all sorts of damage with the stuff they have inside.
And yet I don't.
Patience is a virtue I'm working hard to develop. -

I come here to get my propane tank filled. They have free easy parking; they are efficient and today the guy who took my payment was some damn good eye candy. I never would have guessed that I would enjoy something sweet with my purchase of propane.
Seriously these guys are great. Check them out for all your manly rental needs and everything outdoor grill related. -

Went there looking for propane refill...but realized that this placed deserved a yelp
Three stars: you pull into a driveway with free parking; always important when you're hauling around a 20lb tank in your car; let's face it Muni or your scooter just isn't going to cut it
1 more star: very friendly service; they took the tank which i left at the refilling spot and had it filled within 5 minutes while I was ogling the BBQ supplies inside; lots of extra goodies for your Weber
1 more star: they are a local shop and their price are very reasonable; the Rhino tank costs more and I'm not really all that confident with the folks at Uhaul....these guys seem like they know which end of the tank the gas goes into. Plus always a little leery of getting someone else's used tank; when dealing with a trillion (ok maybe less...but who knows) BTU of highly flammable material I want to know exactly where that tank has been...BTW their price for a new tank is better than Loews....so why leave the city...plus they are open every day...so I don't have to drive to Wyoming on a Saturday or Sunday to do my share for global warming. The folks at Cole Hardware recommend this place...so extra kudos for the whole local business thing. -

We go to Action Rentals about once a month to refill our BBQ propane tanks and absolutely love this place. Lots of cool things to look at including BBQ supplies. We have rented sanding and other equipment from them and always a good experience. The guys who work there are super knowledgable, helpful and friendly - often with great grilling tips.

Does anyone on yelp actually use these guys for what their worth??
one word:
Jackhammer.
When I need one this is where I go. Tile saw, paint sprayer, pencil vibrators, coring drills, you name it. I have never rented a faulty tool, never been overcharged, never had to wait for a rental, and never had bad service. They always take the time to explain the specifics of each tool, and offer advice and detailed instructions with each rental. This place is a necessity for my business and I am very grateful for their convenient location and parking.
It is apparent with a business of this nature that the owner believes in providing his/her customers with great service and value, and this trickles down to through the business to the vapors. Cheers. -

Why I love Action Rentals
1. They sell propane.
2. They sell propane EVEN ON SUNDAY.
3. You don't have to drive to the ends of the earth to get the propane. They are actually in the city so you don't have to drive beyond the Thunderdome just to fire up your grill.
4. The people who work there are friendly and helpful.
Okay. Maybe five stars seems excessive, but anyone who has ever run out of gas at an inopportune time (ie. right before the guests are set to arrive, when a bbq is planned, or when you're really craving a perfect lamb chop or a proper burger) can attest to the lack of availability and service when it comes to getting propane in SF. These guys were friendly on the phone when I inquired about their hours; noticed when I pulled into the parking lot, greeted me, and carried the two propane tanks to and from the car; and happily took care of the purchase while the tanks were being filled.
These guys put me in a better mood because they did their job and they did it well.
BTW: the burgers were excellent. -

Five stars!?
I bought propane at Action Rentals today. I'm sure it's the same propane they sell everywhere else, and probably about the same price. But everyone (specifically, the cashier and the propane guy) was so friendly and downright nice. Propane/equipment folks tend to be pretty gruff. The Action Rentals guys are the opposite.
Lots of bits and pieces for your Weber grill, too!
Also, there's an old, big red dog to sniff. -

The service here is top notch. If I call to find a certain tool to rent, I get a guy that actually knows what he's talking about. How rare is that? When I show up at the store, same thing! Everyone here knows their stuff, and goes out of their way to be helpful, even loading the tool into my car. Great rental place!

Ok, I don't typically like writing reviews but I figured if I rely on other's comments so much, I had better put in my fair share.
After reading about these guys, I decided to try out their propane filling service, and boy was I impressed to say the least. Services is very professional, friendly, courteous, and not to mention FAST. I was in and out in under 10 mins.
I would definitely recommend these guys for your propane or other equipment rental needs. I know I'm gonna need a long tall ladder some day and I won't be looking any where else except right here at Action Rentals. -

I guess my review is a little redundant, but in this day and age, I want to reward a great business whenever I find one. What could be better - easy parking, friendly people, fun BBQ stuff to browse (and buy) while I'm waiting for my tanks to get filled. Plus I save $$ compared to Blue Hippo. So thanks Action Rentals!

5 stars for being the only place I found in San Francisco that refills your BBQ protane tank, and at a very reasonable price ($16.75 I think?)

My god, a business that offers a valuable service for a highly reasonable price and all delivered with smiling, polite service? Wait... am I still in San Francisco?! It can't be!
I saw all the 5 star reviews and thought it sounded too good to be true, but guess what; it's not.
Customers: support this fine business.
Other businesses: learn from these guys. -

Super nice staff. Parking lot. Fill propane "bottles" and have tons of other building stuff for rent. I found out about this place when I went to Discount Lumber trying to get my propane bottles filled and they referred me.

Used these guys a few time now, and always very happy with the equipment and the service. They make sure its working, and most importantly you know how to use it before you leave. I recently rented a tiller and it worked a treat. It saved me hours of time when compared to going at it with a spade, not to mention some serious grief from my back. For 1/2 day it was just north of 40$.
It also worth noting that if, like me you do not own a large SUV/pickup they do offer delivery. Im not sure how much they charge but I rented a pickup from a local U-Haul for less than a nifty (aka 50) and picked up some wood I needed from the discount building supply nearby. Sorted. -

Action rentals rents all kinds of heavy machinery to mere mortals with no experience. This will allow you to become the master of your domain; punching through walls, tearing up floors, and hosting a BBQ with the propane you got after all of the work is done.

Hard to find propane inside city limits these days? These guys have it, plus a full line of Weber gear, and they're open on Sundays! Nice people. Get there before 4 on the weekends. Call me Grillmaster.

Great Service. I come in here to get my propane tanks filled for my BBQ. Remember, $8-12 bucks to fill up a tank vs. $40 - 50 the gas stations want. Decent gadgets in the BBQ section. Can't comment on other services. Never had a need for a jackhammer

Was pleased to find a local option other than U-Haul (don't get me started...) to fill up the propane tank for a little Friday afternoon BBQ. Pulled into the convenient lot, and a friendly staff member immediately came over, picked the tank up from my car, filled it up, and sent me on my way. Nice and easy, very friendly.
And, looks like I found a great place to rent equipment from in the future. Very nice. -

I have to get an outdoor generator and Avista and Mega Event Productions priced it at a minimum of 99 bucks for a day/weekend, and only this company would lease it to me for 45 a day. It's gonna be this Saturday so hopefully it all works out well!

Brought my Honda generator in for service (the dealer refused to service anything they didn't sell themselves) and had it back in two working days. Very hardworking, easy to deal with staff. I'd rented equipment from them previously and they have always been helpful and reasonably priced. These guys rock!

I thought I'd have trouble finding a BBQ grill to rent for a large outdoor event but, to my surprise, these fellows had a whole room full of possibilities for me. The staff is polite, helpful and very customer-friendly. Whatever you're looking for, they probably rent it from BBQ's to cherry pickers! And, as a bonus, the place is spic 'n span clean.

Hopefully no one will need to use Action Rentals' services under the circumstances I did - accidentally drilling into a water pipe in my new apartment while installing my new closet system. ("Hi, I'm the new tenant!"). To avoid any yucky and reeeeallly unhealthy mold stuff growing in the dark recesses behind my clothes, I needed to address the wet carpet plus the padding and wood underneath. I called them to check availability of a dehumidifier and a dryer. The very helpful man on the phone confirmed the availability and quoted rates plus some other equipment sometimes needed in situations like these. I pulled into the parking lot (thank goodness!) and was helped right away. The man helping me gave me tips for placement of the machines for maximum effectiveness and the other nice young man loaded these big ol' machines into the City Car Share and even asked me questions about CCS, but I digress. As I write this, those machines are humming away in my apartment sucking every last bit of moisture outta there. (oof, trying not to think of my next electrical bill). Note: these machines are very easy to use but not quiet, if you need total quiet to sleep, you may want to make other arrangement. Note 2: this place is testosterone heavy with big loud machines, power tools and manly stuff galore but I was never made to feel like I didn't belong just because I was female. I've never had to rent stuff like this before so I can't comment on whether the rates are reasonable but it was much cheaper doing it myself than what the water damage clean up company quoted me.
