Review from Melissa H.
Lisle, IL
As an adult looking for tap classes in Tacoma, this was the only studio I could find.
I enrolled in a 6 week summer class and was less than impressed. This facility is SMALL. The individual studio I was at was a garage with vinyl tile (the garage door was opened to allow ventilation). This place is in the middle of the ghetto, and you always see a cop car sitting outside the studio to pick up pedophiles.
There is no time buffer between classes, so you'll be in the waiting area and get FLOODED with 6 year olds and parents. If you need any help, forget it. There is only one staff person at the desk and the moms will budge right in front of you.
You'll pay an annual registration fee here, which isn't credited towards your monthly instructional fees.
Maybe because it was a short summer session, but I felt really out of place here. Everything was rushed, and we never built on moves or had enough time to practice anything long enough to build any kind of muscle memory. I don't feel like I retained much from my 6 weeks.
Because this is my only option for adult tap, I intend on enrolling again for the fall session. Maybe my experience will improve with a slower, more complete lesson.
If you are looking for children's lessons, however, I would suggest elsewhere.
History
Established in 1984
The original and first Action Dance School opened in Sumner, WA, the summer of 1984 under the direction of Ilauna Rodvelt-Gamlieli. The original Action Dance has relocated twice... once to the state of Oregon and then to the state of Arizona in the city of Surprise. Action Dance reopened its doors in Tacoma on September 5th, 2006.
Meet the Business Owner: Jacob R.
Jacob is the son of Ilauna Gamlieli and the third generation in a family of great dancers. He began dancing at the age of two taking creative movement and tap with his mother. He later added ballet, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, and step to his training through training from many different teachers to diversify his talent. Jacob has many performing acclamations to his name including World Championship awards in tap. As an instructor and choreographer Jacob has coached many groups to High Score Awards and his choreography is featured in the community and more recently at "Vamps and Vixens" and "Le Faux" at Julia's on Broadway in Seattle. After graduating from high school Jacob taught at several private dance schools and held the position of Dance Program Coordinator for the Lakewood Family YMCA. There he founded the award winning FLY Dance Company. Jacob wants nothing more than to inspire and share dance with the eager and enthusiastic.
