Went again for a pedicure from Noel.  She is really really good and I would highly recommend her (great foot massage!)

The service was about 15 minutes late.  They apologized a few times and offered me 20% off!  Wow....really impressive.

    Even better 2nd experience!!!

I have always been a loyal customer of Actaea anytime I needed a mani/pedi or massage.  The mani/pedi's have always been great.  2 month ago I booked a spa day for my bridesmaid and I the day before my wedding (mani/pedi/massage/facial).  2 days before the wedding my bridesmaid called to confirm and they were no longer able to give us the massages in our package and did not offer any alternatives except getting our hair done which would change the price.  Very disappointed.  They never even called me!  I booked the appointment and it is just before my wedding!  It is pretty late for us to get in anywhere else and I only get married once.  I will not go back.

Just visited this Salon yesterday and I was very pleased. The employees, product displace, and waiting area was great. During the actual hair cut I felt at ease and enjoyed the experience. I would highly recommend this place for anyone looking for great customer service.

    Thanks I'll be back, D

I've been a loyal customer of Actaea for over 10 years.  Unfortunately, I'm switching.

The last couple of times I went in to have my hair done, I had to go back because I wasn't happy.  I think my stylist got used to doing my hair the same way all the time and doesn't have any vision to change it - even when I bring in photos of something I would like.

The last time I had my nails done, it seemed to be fine until days later my thumb was just aching.  I took off the polish and half my nail was green :(

I've had enough.  Three strikes, you're out!

    I go here for everything!

Sarah does my hair and she is cute and does a great hair cut. I have long hair, middle of my back, and she always professional and does a great job.

I get facials, massages, eyebrows done here. You can do anything here!

    HIGHLY RECOMMEND

I recently got my hair cut by Paul and he did an amazing job.  I originally made the appointment to get my hair cut and get highlights.  After the consultation with Paul we decided to wait to do the highlights and just did the cut instead.  Since we had some extra time he did a free conditioning treatment for me, which was a great bonus!  He also gave me a little shoulder massage, which always makes me happy.  My hair is very thick and has a bit of a wave to it (and not in a cute way).  Paul took his time to cut and shape my hair even with the massive amount of hair I have and he was able to fix things I didn't care for from a previous haircut.  All in all I left very pleased and will definitely be going back.

excerpt from my complaint letter to the spa manager:

I received excellent service over the phone when I made my appointment, at the reception desk when  I arrived, and even from the young lady who performed my spa service. I must say, however, I not only got a bad wax job, but the worst of my life.

My waxer was friendly and conversant. I felt right at ease disrobed in her presence. Her "bedside" manner was just fine. When she began, she was knowledgeable enough, moving quickly and efficiently. She wore latex gloves, as I'm sure is your standard practice. And for the most part, the wax itself was the perfect temperature.

Things got a little sticky after about 30(yes, 30!) minutes of her seemingly efficient waxing. It was then that I took a peek to see how much progress she'd made. Turned out, not very much! I was surprised because she'd been going at it from both sides for a while. Now mind you, I wax. I had allowed my hair to grow out because I'd switched to shaving for a while. I hated it, so I allowed my hair to grow in, in preparation for the wax. I'd trimmed my hair to about a 1/4 inch so I know that mine was not an extraordinary case, by far.

I laid my head back down a little nervously. We'd run out of things to talk about.

Next thing I know, the waxer applies EXTREMELY HOT wax without warning. I have a very high tolerance for pain, so I quickly sucked in my breath, trying not to move. I said, "This wax is VERY HOT. Is it a different one?" She replied that now she was using hard wax and the temperature is slightly different for it. I said nothing. I hoped she'd be wrapping it up quickly.

Then the tugging began. She asked me to hold a certain part of my flesh taut while she attempted to pull the wax in the other direction. YES, I said the wax. FOR SOME REASON, WITHOUT INFORMING ME, SHE BEGAN TO TEAR THE WAX DIRECTLY FROM MY FLESH. I cried out, "What are you doing?" In between a nervous giggle and excuse, "I'm sorry. My gloves keep sticking to the wax," she explained, "I'm using the hard wax now and it doesn't require strips. Because of how the wax is designed, it penetrates deeper, pulling the hair out better and lasts longer. I'll be done soon."

Again, I laid back, cringing, in pain, and praying that she would hurry. I peeked again, just in time to see my flesh rise inches from my body while she continued to pull and tug at the THICKLY waxed hairs still attached to my body. Let me just say, I have never experienced anything like this in my life. Were it not for my evening plane to Georgia, I would have jumped off that table immediately and run out of the place. But I needed my wax and she was not even done.

I breathed deeply and calmly, as is my nature, and waited for her to finish this assault. She no longer spoke to me. At that moment, my attempt to cope (drifting away mentally) was interrupted by alternating pricking and smoothing of my labia flesh. Prick! Prick! Prick! Rub... Prick! Prick! Rub... I assumed she was collecting wayward hairs or pieces of wax with her fingertips until the pricking got more painful and concentrated in one area. I thought for a second, the sensation was similar to when I plucked my eyebrows with tweezers. But down there, the skin is much looser, so my skin was essentially being pricked! and pulled! at once. I was exasperated. Near tears. I asked her incredulously, "Are those TWEEZERS you're using???" "Yes," she said...all innocence. "There's just a few more hairs that I couldn't get to with the wax. Would you prefer I didn't?" 45 minutes into a wax job, I cannot believe there was anything that she didn't get to, but as I would later find out, there was plenty. I was in shock by then, a mix of angry and sad. I asked, "Can you not?" and closed my eyes tightly waiting for what might come next. She picked and patted and did a few more very thin strips here and there. I wondered desperately what her handiwork would look like. I wondered why she didn't seem to know she should ask me to turn, or open or lift my legs to accommodate her at any time during the session. It was almost as if she were afraid.

Wheeeeeeee!  I am loving my new haircut!  So I'll start off by saying that previously I had visited a certain salon in my area, and I had a request regarding my bangs that the hair stylist seemed unable to fulfill.  I figured I'd trust her judgement, and ended up with a hairstyle that I liked, but didn't love.
However, on my visit to Actaea, my stylist Kendra actually gave me the style I have been wanting for a year!  So, overpriced Chicagoland salon, I guess it was possible to give me those bangs I wanted !
Kendra is the epitome of awesomeness, imho.  She didn't abuse my head, she was thoughtful and thorough with my cut/style, and she recommended product, but wasn't at all pushy.  I ended up with a cut I love, and the cost of the cut, product, and the gas to drive there was the same as a haircut at the previously unnamed salon.
Well worth my time and money, and I would totally recommend it to friends and family.  Yay for Actaea!

My review will probably be considered biased, because I used to work there, but I will still pop in for a quick spa service. Oriana, Tricia, and Taylor are the most amazing massage therapists ever. I have to lug around a lot of crap for school and prefer a stylish messenger bag to some of the ugly backpacks, so I pay a heavy price shoulder-wise. These gals have really fixed my back. Unfortunately, I now live ninety miles away, so continuing the 'treatments' is hard, but I recommend, if you are in Milwaukee, to get a massage from one of these three.

I have been going to Actaea for years now and have complete trust in the talent and abilities of my stylist! It means alot to me as a client to have a stylist that works with me to help me achieve not only the look I desire but consistently does a great job!  I look forward my appointments because beyond the haircut and color, the overall experience is relaxing and everyone that works there is friendly and polite! It's all the little things  too, like the atmosphere, the chai tea, the neck massage and chair massage while your getting your hair washed, that makes every visit something I look forward to. I would recommend Actaea as a place to go to get a great haircut, fabulous color and quality customer care. My recommendation for a stylist is Paul, but I have friends and family that have seen many of the other stylists and their feedback and experience has been the same as mine!

Me and my sister went here to get our hair done for a wedding, and we definitely were not impressed. All the girls working there were very rude, and both our hair styles turned out just ok-neither were what we asked for. My sister's stylist in particular was very rude when my sister asked her to redo part of her hair. Definitely not worth the money to get your hair done here for a special occasion.

Can't say I've ever heard anybody complain about the place, well other than Allyson U.  Anyways, I've always had a great experience there.  A little pricey by Milwaukee standards, but with a dozen visits I've always been pleased.  Always hear good things from the ladies who visit as well.  And the staff is quite pleasant IMO.

I have been to both locations several times, saying it was only a one time experience. It turned out that each time the staff was rather rude... and price is not the issue...
