Review from Tricia Z.
I've had mostly good experiences here so I'm rounding up from 3.5 to 4 stars.
This is our go-to place when we don't want fast food and its late at night. Prices are alright.
All their breakfast food is awesome.
I had the cheese fries once....never again.
Sometimes the service can be meh but its a diner and they are some miserable looking employees. I'm sure they get tipped worse than normal places to begin with but their attitude sure doesn't help them.
My boyfriend loves their chicken salad sandwich (comes with bacon). I love their fries and always have trouble deciding if I want french fries or home fries. We always order breakfast food or sandwiches, the dinners never seem appetizing especially at the prices of the dinners. I'm wondering if all the people with bad reviews are eating all those overpriced dinners. -

The Acropolis Diner is a old diner that still has the 50's style decor with the original Formica cut in a scalloped pattern on the counter. They do have a special board and were offering today Whole Wheat Pancakes, Strawberry Pancakes and a few interesting offerings for lunch as well. I took a break from my usual routine and ordered straight from the menu by going with the eggs Benedict with home fries. The home fries were crisp and not too greasy. Perfect in my opinion. The staff in this place was very friendly which is also a plus in a diner. Despite the fact that its located in an area that I'm not too fond of, it's worth it to try.

Acropolis Diner [affectionately called "Acrop" by those in the know] is pretty great. Although, to be honest, I don't know if I'm a fan because Acrop is a legitimately good diner, or if it's because Acrop is such a staple to Hamden livin'.
I've never had a bad experience with the waitstaff. Just the opposite, actually.
The food is typical diner food. Any place that serves breakfast all day is good in my book. The prices are reasonable. Coffee is decent and equipped with free refills. Soda is decent, but the refills ain't free.
Seriously, Acrop is a Hamden institution. I have so many memories of eating here - especially from my high school days. Which was awesome when I was actually IN high school, but now that years and years have passed since roaming the halls of Hamden High, this fact is just irritating. Whyyyyyy is this place full of high school brats? Was I really THAT annoying? How do the waitstaff even stand it? Okay, I'll stop asking questions. But, expect that you will run into high school aged kids, especially if you're in between the hours of 12:00PM and 4:00PM. -

Not your typical Mexican food. They have a variety. Everything's good and they'll make it as spicy as you want. Lunch time is usually quiet here, so best to go for dinner.

We ordered a chocolate shake, onion rings, eggplant parm sub, and a piece of cheesecake and ate every bite. It was all perfect. So perfect that I'd almost be afraid to go back and ruin a perfect memory.
Our waitress was great and I got a kick out of the other customers too. Great diner experience. -

This is an average diner with decent service. Nothing fancy but a very large menu choice is available with daily specials. When I want to catch a quick lunch, this is the spot. The cheeseburger triple-decker is excellent and I usually get a side of gravy to dip my french fries in.

This is possibly hands down the worst diner ive ever eaten at. Going to a college near by ive been here twice for lunch with friends, and both times were just awful. Everyone in my group was thoroughly disappointed. The place itself is nice and clean, the waitress was lovely. The food? awful. Defiantly NOT going to go back anytime soon.

Solid turkey club. A turkey club is one of those things that if a place does it well, you can pretty much assume they know their business. The canary in the coal mine that is a diner. Roast beef club is just as good.
Acropolis has a great turkey club and good enough service that if I specify the kind of toast and no cheese and a side of mustard they get it right, no questions asked. Service is beyond excellent.
And yet, honestly, this place only deserves 3 stars - their gyro is no where near as good as the Yorkside's. And on a slow holiday day they were open (yay!) but the bacon wasn't made fresh. 24/7 -

"Acrap" brings back tons of memories from college. It was one of the first places I dined when I moved to CT, it was "the place to be" and hang out if you went to my college.
The food is great, served fast by very friendly wait staff, and it's inexpensive too. "They make the best toast I've ever had," is what my good friend used to always claim. I'd recommend it to anyone dining on a dime. -

Avoid this dump like the plague.
It used to be a fairly decent diner but has gone so far downhill it's off the cliff!
I went yesterday for a simple chefs salad. The roast beef served in it was spoiled-slimy and putrid. This is the first time in many years a resto have served me something so utterly rotten.
After mentioning it to my waitress, she came back to say they would deduct 3 dollars from my tab-gee thanks.
After telling her this would be my last visit to the place-she came back and said the salad was on the house...as if I could actually eat it.
I left after tipping her and will not ever go back. Yuck. -

This is the worst diner I've ever been to. Their waffles are greasy grilled eggo waffles! They batch bacon and homefries in huge quantities that sit on the side of the grill all day and night (or quite possibly dayS and nightS). The service is terrible, although I do feel bad for the underpaid overworked waitresses. I think that waiting on too many high school and college kids who order a coffee and sit there all night making a mess and then stiffing them for tips has had an effect.
Three Brothers Diner, right down the street on Dixwell (towards Downtown New Haven, but still in Hamden), is open 24 hours, AND is delicious. Much better food and service than Acrop :). -

The food is typical good diner food but the owner is another story!!!!
So Jeff and I have a few friends that live in Hamden so one night we were all hanging out and wanted some good diner food. We went to Acropolis and everything was going well. The waitress was really nice and some of the guys were flirting with her and we were all having fun. At the end of our meal we mentioned to the waitress that we wanted 3 separate checks since we came in a large group.
Since she had already written up the bill, she had to go to the register where her boss was to re- write it up. After a few minuets we all realized that the owner was yelling at our waitress and calling her stupid! We all waited at our seats to see what would happen and finally I couldn't take it!
I walked up to the owner and asked what the problem was. He was like "oh don't worry the waitress screwed it up, she stupid." (in his thick accent and broken English) And I was like no it's our fault that we did not tell her before hand that we wanted separate checks. And he was like "oh no it is her and now I need to do it all over again!" None of us could understand why he was making such a big deal. He was shouting over having to write 3 new checks by hand. He said that his machine (calculator) was not working and that he could not just rip up the original piece of paper and start all over! I would rip them up and re-write them myself so he would not have to go through the trouble and he refused.
He was not only rude to the waitress but to all of us!! He told me that I could not touch the bill because the camera over the register was watching me! HA! SUCH A JOKE! -

Nothing fancy here. Just nice folks and good food. It's your typical diner. Food tastes good and isn't that expensive. You'd probably end up here if you wanted some good eats, but weren't quite sure what you were in the mood for or if you wanted breakfast at night... stuff like that. You'll definitely enjoy yourself if you eat here, but you won't walk away stunned or anything. :)

Diner food, cheap, breakfast all day, open well into the wee hours of morning = good stuff.
Nothing fancy, and thus a staple for the local college/alum scene of QU. They chocolate milkshake could stand a little more chocolate and they should enforce some eminent domain on the surrounding houses to expand the parking lot to accommodate the amount of business...but thats all! -
Review from Amy K.
Hamden, CT
The servers just can't fathom a twenty-something coming in and actually ordering something, instead of goofing off. (Like most of the QU/Hamden High groups that SO often screw it up for the rest of us in the neighborhood.) Consequently, the service is short, rude, and don't expect much talking from them if you honestly decide that tonight you'd really enjoy a nice cold glass of *gasp* water!
The food isn't bad, but the diner isn't clean and the service isn't worth the amount of money they are going to charge you. Drive the five extra minutes to Three Brothers. -

This place is Waffle House with a Greek twist, but the food is worse than WH. Actually, it's just straight up awful. I can eat greasy food with the best of them, but this place just made me sick to my stomach. I jokingly suggested this place as we were leaving Home Depot and my husband decided it would be seriously fun... never again.

This place brings back so many memories of high school for me. My friends and I were in here constantly. The food is actually really good for a diner. The staff- friendly and very tolerant of our high school girl craziness.

I know everyone looks for that one spot where you can eat after you threw back a few and danced your butt off till 3 in the morning. Well for us in H-Town growing up this was IT! Cheap food, Personable waitress, and all the DRUNKEN comedy you could handle. So many times my nights had ended up here watch a bunch of drunk wanna-be Gotti's fighting each other and getting arrested. By far my fave drunk stop!

The best that a 24-hour East Coast diner can be. Great food with a Greek Twist, accomodating but not doting staff, and safe, convenient locale. Not too many Yalies -- you'd think there'd be more.

A decent diner for the area. I would say that the portions are decent, the sevice is always quick and friendly, and their spinach-feta omlette is good.

Hamden, CT
After reading the other reviews, I realize that I may not fully appreciate what this dinner means to Hamden locals. Sure I live here, but I'm not *from* here, so I don't have drunken late-night memories to enhance my feelings towards the place.
T. and I came here for breakfast on a weekend, assuming that since it was nearly full that there must be good food. WRONG! Oh so wrong. How is it possible to screw up breakfast food so badly?? My french toast and "maple-flavored" syrup were disappointing. My husband's pancakes were so bad he didn't finish them, only the 2nd time I've seen him leave food behind at a diner! I had a side of bacon that was bland and dried. The service was slow, although the waitress was nice enough.
OK- I understand that diners don't serve gourmet food. But it's really not too much to ask that you serve decent food. I promise- it's not all that hard to make good pancakes, french toast and bacon. I can see why Denny's does well- less atmosphere but better food at the same prices! -
