Review from Hema K.
Got to know this Spa through Groupon and tried their closed colon therapy. We were super late for the appointments and initially they yapped about their cancellation and late comer policy. But then Gaya mentioned that she has an appointment available on the very next day and voila my therapy session was back on.
Colon cleansing is not comfortable especially if you are first timer. It felt as though I had no control and feeling constipated most of the time lol. Gaya was so wonderful all throughout the procedure and worked great. I'm such a fuss when it comes to these and she totally made me at ease as though its not bigga deal. Her massages are wonderful though a bit kneading. 5 stars for Gaya. -
Review from Vicky L.
Okay guys, I gotta come clean.
Literally.
One of my first Groupon purchases brought me to Acqua di Roma for an infrared sauna and a foot detox. At that time, I was too scared to try the colonic, so I went in, dipped my feet in a tub of water, watched some weird random particles rise to the surface of the water, and then sat in a small shower-like stall that made me feel icky and sweaty. Of course that was the point.
I didn't feel any effects after that - maybe I had high hopes. But my pod friend in med school told me that it would be impossible to detox through the feet, for the feet can't just excrete toxins like that. Plus, the infrared sauna didn't make me feel any less sore from running and working out.
I decided to go back for a colonic, and I must say that it's one of the most uncomfortable things I've experienced (no, not the tube up the ..). Most people rave about how awesome they feel. Let me tell you that you'll feel good about TWO DAYS AFTER, not DURING OR IMMEDIATELY AFTER. Why? Because you'll feel gassy and bloaty, and it's really kind of gross. However, afterwards, you will feel cleansed. A small price (or hefty, at $110 a pop?) to pay for the feeling of being clean inside, I suppose.
Would I go back for that treatment? Probably, now that I know what to expect. Plus, Gaya is so wonderful that she made the process seem like a breeze. Would I go back to try other services, such as their facials and haircuts? Most likely. This place is super cute, comfortable, and serene, which is exactly what you would expect of a spa.
Just don't eat before your colonic, or your brain will play tricks on you and make you think that you need to .. you know. -

Acqua di Roma is a hidden gem of a spa in North Beach. It's situated in the basement of an old bank, and the vaults have been turned into spa treatment rooms -- genius! One would think old vaults would be spare and cold, but no. Every room glows with warm, inviting energy.
Walking through the spa is sort of like exploring the different chambers of a tiny museum. In the first room? A jacuzzi with a deep tissue massaging jets and hoses. The second room? A facial machine that opens your pores and pours in the vitamins. The last? Chinese acupuncture without needles. Seriously state-of-the-art stuff here.
Go see the owner, now! This lady knows her stuff. I went in for a facial, and wow, I'm a believer. I got their most gentle peel, which removes all of the dead skin and oils. Since then, I've been applying the topical lotion she gave me, and my skin has never been so clear. The price was $110, but apparently you only have to get it done four times a year to keep your skin healthy.
I was walking in the valley of the shadow of dermatology, but now I've seen the light. Hallelujah!Listed in: Beauty & Wellness in San…

Acqua di Roma is simply pure relaxation! It is by far the BEST spa we've ever visited. Their specialized treatments, relaxing atmosphere, personalized service and abundant knowledge was much appreciated and so authentic.
There is no pretense here... they want you to look AND feel AMAZING and as we were promised by Alma, "you're going to be a noodle after this", and she did not let us down!
Acqua di Roma is beautiful, tranquil, hi tech, cutting edge and most importantly an Italian Spa that is dedicated to YOU. You HAVE to experience this to truly understand what I mean.
If you're looking for more than a day spa... then look no further than Acqua di Roma!
Interested in reshaping your body and life... they have an amazing program just for that.... stay tuned I think I am going to take part in it!
For the best spa experience of your life.... head to Acqua di Roma in San Francisco!Listed in: Pamper Me Places (Spas & Such)

Very few times in my life can I say I've ever felt like a goddess. Really. My last session with Shayla at her new location made it happen. My entire 3 hour visit was THE most amazing, uplifting, personalized spa treatment in my life. I can say that now, and it feels great.
The experience went like this...
I arrive in good time and am greeted by sweet, almost cherub-like Dorothy (the receptionist--and I'm not kidding about the cherub-likeness; she's a doll)... She guides me down the charming elevator down this historic building, into a Whole. New. World.
Every inch of every corner is thoughtfully designed by an artist who has ensured that whoever walks in will taste the Old Rome-- far away, and yet within reach. Colors, textures, accents, props, decor, paintings, plants, furniture, curtains, soft lighting and music, everything. Beauty. Completely beyond me. Goodness, do I deserve this much?
I'm brought to a nice locker area, provided a key, a plush robe and slippers. I take a moment in the dressing room, and find a comfy seat in the lounge room where ultra-light refreshments (water, tea & cashews/almonds) are served. I feel the perfectly cozy warm temperature of every room here-- a nice getaway from the cold wind slicing through downtown SF.
Shayla comes and we giggle over this new place she's just moved into. What a find. Our colonic session is wonderful, through and through (literally). She speaks in lullabies throughout the procedure, it seems (haha), providing more tips on food digestion. Simultaneously, she performs some gentle massage: reflexology on my legs and hands, and even reiki healing over my abdomen. Holistic, indeed.
I am feeling utterly light and free. My solo infrared sauna follows with pleasant color light treatment and soothing music, as my heart goes to work and my body relaxes even more. As if it were possible. My stay ends with a shower using their generous amenities and I walk out feeling like a million bucks. No, more. Much, much more.
And imagine? I was able to experience all this, courtesy of Shayla who proactively insisted I return after a disheartening episode at her old venue. Full redemption.
I have sent friends here now, and am scheduled to return along with my partner. Thank you, Shayla, for honoring my BEING. -

This is a review about Ramon, who I followed from 77 Maiden lane. I realized a long time ago that I probably would never "commit" to a hairstylist, that I'd always be a "player," using them for a style or two, and then leave them for greener pastures. Perhaos it was perfection I was trying to reach? Who knows. Well, that all stopped with Ramon over a year ago, when I recognized him from a haircut, my BEST haircut, 12 years ago. It was he who left me, going to NYC, but came back a decade later. I got a cut from him, and another, and...I won't go to anyone else. The spa seems great. Serene, comfortable, well lit in the hair salon. If you are searching for a terrific style, with a blow dry that will last for days, Ramon is your man. AND...get this VALIDATED PARKING! Total score.

Prepare yourself for a temporary escape from the noise and chaos of our beautiful city. Acqua di Roma is a special place with a staff filled with healers.
For the past few years I've become a regular of Alma's Ciro facials. My lines and adult achne disappear - plus my face glows after each visit and lasts for weeks. People comment on how beautiful my skin looks.
Ramon recently joined the team for hair styling and color. Upon return from my first visit for a color and trim, it was the best response from my husband - he said I look GORGEOUS and wondered out loud why it took me so long to find a great stylist!
Have a great time and prepare yourself to UNWIND and rejuvenate! -

acqua di roma is like ambrosia on honey, with a jagged design edge for balance.
the pre-opening soiree was abound with glamazons and suaveazons charming each other over champagne adorned with raspberries and flowers.
a family affair: gian-paolo veronese welcomed guests into his italian villa in the middle of the city. his lovely mother angela alioto was there to support him, and her famed law office is next door. gracious hosts and a plentitude of helpful licensed staff completed the dream team.
the spa is a sensual envelope of italian marble and tranquility, yet has a dash of debonair accents combined with bold statements like the vip lounge framed by "the first vault door ever installed in sf, from the bank of italy - it's pretty thick," remarks my friend garland. the space has a great layout and many rooms, each with its own personality yet tied to a common design theme by luxe abbreviations.
some of the services use the latest technology devices to promote: absorption of spa treatments by up to 40%, water retention reduction, wrinkle minimization; you name it. "i'm definitely coming back," effuses my friend jane. this former wine cellar is positioned to be the primo spa destination in sf. congrats, gian-paolo and alessandro! -

As you can see, Acqua di Roma has closed its doors since I gave my initial review. Don't worry though, Ji and her magical scissors are still hard at work! She's working out of the salon at St. Moritz (Stockton and Sutter). Don't let the negative reviews deter you; they were posted before her arrival. You can schedule an appointment with her by calling her directly at (650)274-7262.

vip soiree hosted by the owner gian-paolo veronese and the place was bustling with people.
the reception is so warm and elegant with products lined along the sides and specialized for your individual needs.
but the actual services are hidden down below.
a klimt fresco welcomes you to a roman subterranean haven. but don't let the rustic feel fool you. this place is stocked with the latest technology for wellness. the halls lead you to a gorgeous waiting room to tranquil massage rooms and baths.
my favorite is the original bank of italy vault door. it houses a couples massage room. the original concrete walls are a perfect contrast to the padded ceiling. they even have a body wrap for a techno lymphatic cleansing massage. if that isn't over the top...lush orchids accent nooks throughout the spa.
a definite sanctuary. -

This is a review for Shayla...for the fabulous colon cleansing treatments she provides.
don't even know where to start. I have picked up the phone a dozen times in the last year to call this place and never get past that. Just far too embaressing to imagine....but i knew i really needed to do this. So after almost a month of eating uber healthy and running 25 miles a week...and still feeling "crappy" I finally had enough and made the best call I have ever made. I was SO nervous on the verge of being sick to my stomach, luckily there was Shayla. She is so mellow and relaxed and acts like this is an everday occurance...and oddly enough it is...for her. She makes you feel totally at ease, regardless of whats going on. I am a differerent woman than i was a week ago. I went in 3 days in a row and i feel totally renewed. My stomach is flatter, my colon actually feels cleaner..i won't go into details! I ran the best 1/2 marathon time wise today. I'm a beliver..and i will spread the gospel of colon cleansing to all. I CAN"T SAY ENOUGH WONDERFUL THINGS. I am now a life time client. Oh, and it's just not me who feels that way, i've had several complements this weekend on how great i look :) YEAH! Feel free to email me with questions...and NO, i didn't know Shayla before this but I feel lucky to now -

This is in the midst of closing; my wife showed up for her haircut and the place was being emptied out. Validated parking no longer in effect; she paid $25 to park - thumbs down to that. Her hair looks great, though.

I've been going to Alma at Acqua di Roma for skin care for over 20 years.
She is an expert in her field and will make your spa experience soothing and restorative. The atmosphere at Acqua di Roma is nothing short of blissful. A tranquil oasis in the heart of North Beach, I would recommend this spa to anyone seeking superior service and quality. -

So i followed my stylist Ramon from 77 maiden lane over to this salon/spa and i have to say that i love it! Love the ambience, the spa, the small hidden gem feeling that you have when you walk in. but enough about the ambience, what about the capacity of the salon/spa? Well Ramon is the best. I have been hairstylist hopping for most of my adult life (that i could afford stylists anyways), until i met ramon. He is very chill, laid back, but he does masterful work. My friends, coworkers and clients alike ask me constantly, "who does your hair, i want his number!" Now i am looking forward to trying the other spa services at this spa.

My original review was for Shayla for her wonderful colon hydrotherapy services and after recently learning she no longer works there, I felt the need to update my review for the salon itself due to the unusual circumstances behind her departure. In any case, while coming here for her services the front desk staff was always very courteous.

Outstanding spa! The best I have ever experienced! Must go! You will not be disappointed. Facials, massages and the cleansing program is outstanding. I needed to lose a few pounds and had low energy. By the time I finished the cleansing program, I had lost the weight, lost the cellulite, had beautiful skin and had renewed energy and vitality. Many people were asking what I had done to make my skin so radiant! I received many compliments. You must try the infrared sauna, biopress lymphatic drainage and energy balancing as they are outstanding treatments to help cleanse and beautify as well. I also learned a new way of eating that I continue to now.
The spa is tranquil, relaxing and beautifully decorated. You will not want to leave! You will leave looking BEAUTIFUL and RADIANT! -

I also followed Ramon over from 77 Maiden Ln. I must have some weird hair because over the years the stylists I've been to have consistently given me those oh-well-it'll-grow-back cuts. But Ramon has always listened with an experienced, common-sense approach and given me a great cut. He's a master of the craft whom I'd recommend to anyone.
The salon has really nice, cool outer North Beach style which will be a pleasure to return to. -

I followed Ramone here from 77 Maiden Lane for a reason, because he is the absolute best! He has taken my color from typical blonde highlights, to amazingly blended natural looking bright color. I am constantly being stopped by people asking me who does my hair. He understands how to cut hair in a way that allows my style to look effortless. He has taken my hair from long, to super short, to a graceful grow out and managed to make it look fantastic every step of the way. I would recommend him to any and everyone!

Ok, I must admit, it's taken me a very long time to make the jump and spend the money to see a real hair stylist. My wife followed Ramone from 77 Maiden Lane and my first impression of Acqua di Roma was that this is my kind of place! Luxurious. Luxurious. I had Ramone cut about 4 inches of my hair and this man knows how to sculpt, as my ponytail is perfectly shaped but yet looks incredible when its down. Whatever he did, my hair felt like silk and flows beautifully. I bought the shampoo and conditioner that he used for me and I haven't looked back. Incredible. I also had a facial in the spa and will post a separate review.

I have short blond fine pixie hair and very picky about the way it looks. It needs to be this exact combination of feminine and edgy without looking too artistic or little old fashion. I have tried a huge number of high end salons in downtown San Francisco and Beverly Hills and, finally, found my favorite hairstylist Ji Hong.
Her haircuts are extremely precise and her sense of style is impeccable. She just gets it!!! She is a true hair surgeon. Working in fashion industry myself I know exactly what I am talking about. Ji used to work at 77 Maiden Lane salon, and after it closed she moved to Acqua di Roma Salon (very pretty space).
I sent her few girlfriends of mine and they keep coming back too. So I am confident that my review will be helpful to anybody who is looking for a great stylish haircut. Plus I don't like to wait when I come, I never have time for a two hour haircut. And Ji is always on time and fast.
I don't believe in great salons, I only believe in particular stylists who have perfect taste, deep knowledge and excellent skills. And Ji is my number one. -

Acqua di Roma is not solely a spa but is the entire package of what a wellness center and oasis should be. One can opt for traditional spa services but they also go the extra mile by providing services that can't be found in many other spas in SF. Recently I just had the ElectraSlim treatment which has electro currents run through you in order to stimulate any fat cells which helps to reduce cellulite. It was fantastic! I have had this done 2x in the past two weeks and I truly can see a difference. Bathing suit season and my wedding are both around the corner so this is a treatment that I will continue to do in order to acheive the best results. At the same time, I have been taking religiously an amazing protein powder called UltraLean and Fish Oil/Omega liquid vitamins that Alma, one of the spa directors, suggested to me so that I maximize my results. It is so easy to drink these as they taste really good.
ADR is unlike any other spa, services can be customized to each client to ensure that they receive necessary and realistic treatments. Truly a gem and a serene oasis. Simply said, ADR is one-of-a-kind! -

Very bad ethics for a place that stores clients' personal and credit card information. Shyla left and took client information with her of clients that she never serviced during her tenure at Aqua di Roma and constantly calling them to book appointments with her. So be careful when you sign up online to makeappointment for spa treatments, I just don't know how secure they are when it comes to keeping yur personal information.

this place seriously ruined my tranquility. While I completely understand the hiccups of a new business, I found the following totally unacceptable:
1. During my treatment, an alarm went off and the masseuse couldn't figure out how to move the table up. She called in help for both issues - I really don't love a ruckus when I'm trying to chill out.
2. After the massage I asked where I could shower. The response: there is a $25 charge to use the shower. SERIOUSLY? What kind of spa charges people to use the shower? So I am totally covered in oil and put back on my work clothes, and far more agitated then when I arrived.
3. When I went to pay, the woman at the desk tried to charge me an amount higher than what was listed on the website. Her response: "we don't really talk with the people who make the web and we are still trying to work things out." Huh?
4. 9:30pm. Friday night. The woman behind the counter calls me at home to say that she spoke with the owner and that the price is actually higher than what I was charge and do I want to come back with more cash. Okay, I know small businesses are struggling in a recession, but COME ON...
Shady, shady lane. -

I've been here twice now and my skin has never looked this good. Both times, I have gotten the Crio Glacial Facial and could not be happier with the results. Alma is wonderful and has made me feel very comfortable with the treatments. I have gone to just about every spa in San Francisco and I can confidently say I will be a permanent client of Acqua di Roma. I finally feel like turning 30 won't be so bad!

I finally made the time to do something for myself and got a massage at Acqua di Roma Spa. I was disappointed. The spa is located in the basement of an old concrete building. Usually they crank up the heat in spas, but this one was a bit chilly. I was fine on the table, which had a heating pad, and under the covers, but everyone time the lifted the blanket to work on an area of my body, I was chilly. I get regular massages every 2 weeks, but I decided to pay more to get the spa experience. The facility is that great. The dressing room in a little hole in wall, and not at all luxurious. The rooms were pretty basic, nothing special. I booked an 80 minute massage for $145, but when it was time to check out, they said it was $170. They said they changed their massage from 80 to 90 minutes, but that's $25 for an additional 10 minutes! The didn't charge me the extra money because I didn't know about the change, but I just made the appointment the week before.
The massage itself was fine. I specifially asked for someone who could really do deep tissue, but I forgot the average massage therapist uses elbows to do this. My regular massage therapist is Kelly Pace at Hazel Horsnell & Associates in San Mateo. She does a really good deep tissue and rarely needs to use her elbows. Since I've been spoiled by Kelly, this massage wasn't as enjoyable. Parking was $22, but the spa did validate.
I used 3 half price gift certiciates which I got for an additional 50% off (12.50 for $50), so I paid less than $70 total with tip. Not bad, but I wouldn't paid $170 + tip to go here again. If I'm going to spend that much money, the facility needs to be much nicer. -

After having the salon cancel and reschedule twice on me, I spoke to Gaya last week to set up a new time for this past Friday. Only upon my arrival on such a stormy day did I learn the salon spontaneously closed down and no one called to inform me! Trying to hitch a taxi ride out of the financial district on a rainy Friday afternoon took a whole 45 minutes. Thumbs down for lack of communication.

The Yelp review on this spa was so good, so I have decided to make reservation and called. Drothy answered the phone. I asked several questions about their service, priceing etc. She did not have even one answer and had to put me on hold after each questions. By the time she finally booked my reservation, I was really truned off. I guess the spa treatmenet service must be good, but for me the whole package from reservation, employee's attitude, professionalism and all that are important for me. The fact who picked up the phone did not know much about their own service and pricing was red flag for me and I was really turned off. I could not look forward to going there and I ended up cancelling my reservation.

I was lucky enough to receive a trip to the spa for my birthday, and chose Acqua di Roma after reading some of the other fabulous reviews. The experience was hands down amazing. The facilities were calm, clean, and well designed, and the staff was welcoming, and professional. I started with the infrared sauna which was surprisingly comfortable and very relaxing. I had a wonderful body scrub and wrap which left my skin feeling sooo soft. I had a hyrdomassage from Alma, one of the co-owners, who was very sweet and clearly knowledgeable about nutrition and physiology. Finally, I had a polarity massage and hydrotherapy session with Gaya. It was THE best massage I've ever had; she is truly gifted. And as others have said, she made the hydrotherapy experience very comfortable and also informative. It was an amazing day; I left feeling so relaxed but also amazingly energetic. The staff made the whole experience very personal and always made sure I was comfortable and happy. I would recommend their services to anyone. I'll definitely be back!!

My BF bought me a gift certificate for a massage at Acqua di Roma. Because of his travel schedule, we needed a very specific day/time for our massages, and called there without much notice hoping to worm our way in. The staff were exceptionally kind and accommodating, and arranged for two massage therapists to come in and provide our treatments, and called me back in a timely manner. I was exceptionally impressed with the phenomenal level of customer service provided - they really went above and beyond the call of duty - and everything was well-run. Even better, when we arrived, we received THE MOST INCREDIBLE massages, I am not kidding, it was seriously the best massage I have had ever and I have had a significant number of them, I consider myself an aficionado of sorts. I was like jelly after. Plus, the spa itself is incredibly tranquil and serene, the robes are super cozy and soft and the people are fabulous. Also, they have preserved some cool historical architectural elements -for example - one of the treatment rooms was formerly a bank vault. Well done Acqua di Roma. We will definitely go back. You, dear reader, should go there too. I promise, you will have an amazing experience from start to finish. The only thing I would improve are the slippers. They were well-made and comfortable but I have super tiny size 5 feet and when I walked around I made a slap-slap noise.

GAYA GAYA GAYA GAYA GAYA GAYA GAYA GAYA GAYA GAYA GAYA
weeks after my spectacular massage my body is still chanting praise to this woman and her other worldly gift of touch. her name is the true embodiment of her practice...GAYA, earth mother, took me into her womb and 2 hours later, re-birthed me whole...my love concurs....
i could begin with describing my entire spa experience from the time we walked in the door to the time we floated out, but i would be doing this goddess a disservice if my entire review was not all about HER.
let me first say that i have been a bodyworker for over 10 years and have studied many different modalities. i'm VERY particular about who touches my body. i have been known to get off the table in a middle of a massage before. both me and my love wanted GAYA to adopt us! my love said it was, hands down, the best massage she had ever had------i should be jealous!, but it only challenges me to continue my studies and learn from such sages as GAYA.
GAYA is trained in 'phenomenal touch' massage, colon hydro therapy, and polarity therapy. i also discovered that she is a talented raw food chef and knows endless information about herbs. i don't want to sound 'new age-y or esoteric-y, but we both were just so enamored with this woman! from the moment GAYA greeted us we were instantly wrapped up in her warm nurturing energy. my love had her massage first while i experienced a first time colonic. i was nervous, but GAYA assured me that i would be fine and that there was nothing to worry about. she was very thorough in detailing the entire process.
after my colonic, i waited in the lounge area for my love to be done with her massage. when i saw her, i knew right away that my massage with GAYA was going to a life changing event...my love was BEAMING....GLOWING...i was so excited for my turn!!
GAYA did not let me down. her energy is strong, yet gentle. her touch is powerful and intuitive. she knew exactly what my body needed. i felt safe and free. the tension in my muscles melted, my mind was at peace, and my heart was humming.
our massages with GAYA were pure BLISS. my words do little justice to showcase the full spectrum of the mind/body/soul transformation that occurs while GAYA is cradling you in her arms. to whomever is reading this review, i say, call aqua di roma NOW and make an appointment with GAYA. with such talent as hers, im sure she is booked out for months!
LOVE LOVE LOVE you beautiful mother GAYA!!! we are honored that you shared your gifts with us. we cannot wait for our next massage with you! -

Alma at Acqua di Roma has opened my eyes and changed my whole approach to eating and understanding my physicality. She has been working with me on a detox/cleanse program which is not only easy, but I feel amazing. I am sleeping better, have more energy and suddenly understand how much impact what I eat and drink has on my overall health. Her electro-slim treatments are awesome; if something can be relaxing and invigorating at the same time it is this treatment! Alma has a calm nurturing manner and everyone at Acqua di Roma is gracious and professional. No other spa like this in SF.

So, I am new to this yelp thing and it is unfortunate that since I signed up I do not have the best things to say from my experiences. I have been going to spas and salons for over 24 years for pleasure and business. I just recently retired from being employed as an inspector for the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. Yes, I am critical in the service and condition of the spa and salons that I do visit now only for pleasure. To say the least... Aqua di Roma would have to be one of the most unsanitary establishments that I have visited in this city! I never did see a autoclave in my facial treatment room and I saw a spa attendant handling the snacks in the waiting area with her hands, just to name a few. The one thing that shocked me the most is i searched high in low for a Aqua di Roma's establishment license and it was no where to be found in the general public's view along with no sign of the technicians licenses! These are huge red flags!
