Amazing!! I've been here a good amount recently, it's always quiet because people think it's closed, but it's not--go!

The salads, the soups, the building, everything is great! The staff is awesome and the kind of staff that you want to talk to during your meal.

This place is a gem and I'm sad it's closing.

This comes from the view of a former UNH student.

Back in the age of dining hall block-plans.  Back when four swipes got you a free meal at Acorns.  I found the best meal ever.  It was a boneless chicken breast, breaded lightly, laid gently on a pile of buttery mashed potatoes, and smothered in a creamy maple sauce.  I've tried to recreate it many, many times.  I've never been able to.  The sauce wasn't too thick or thin, it was just perfect.  And what's more amazing is that my peers created that.  Or at least that's what I was told at the time.  I think Acorns is a great resource and starting point for students wanting to break into fine dining or fancy cooking.

Since those days, I've just been repeatedly disappointed.  But I think that's because my first meal there was so orgasmic.  The brunch is really great, we took my mom there for mother's day one year and she was impressed.  If I lived in the area, I might be back.  But for now I'm searching for the cook who made that incredible meal.  Yum.

I'm glad Acorn's is so far away from me now or else I'd be broke and obese.  As is, the 40-minute drive just further whets my appetite for this wonderful little restaurant.

I had, bar none, the best meal of my life at this place: an appetizer of lobster bisque (the best I've ever tasted anywhere in New England) followed by an entrée of grilled swordfish in a maple glaze, whipped sweet potatoes, and baby zucchini, and a dessert of fluffy, creamy cheesecake topped with fresh strawberries and blackberries the size of golfballs.  All of the flavors in the meal seemed to compliment one another perfectly, and everything was cooked flawlessly.  Other meals have not disappointed, either.

The restaurant itself is built right into a woodsy hillside by UNH, so the view outside is really beautiful.  The setting provides a really nice atmosphere (candlelight, tablecloths, more forks than you can count on one hand) without being stuffy, which makes it a nice place for special occasions.  It's mildly pricey for the area ($80 easy for two people getting apps, entrees, and one dessert), but that's a drop in the bucket next to fancy Boston places, many of which have inferior food and service.  Definitely worth checking out if you're looking for a little oasis in the cow-studded pastures of the UNH area.

This is a review of their special occasion buffets.

I have been there for Thanksgiving dinner, and for a graduation lunch.  At both events there was a great selection of food to choose from, all of which was very tasty.  The beef dishes from the carving station were particularly notable.  There were even enough choices for people who had multiple food allergies.

The dessert selection was impressive, and they sometimes had a chocolate fountain.

I had dinner at Acorns when I was staying at the conference facility as part of a workshop, so I also had lots of buffet lunches there.  In general, my meal was very good.  I had a prix fixe meal of the cheddar soup appetizer, the scallops with pasta and citrus sauce for my entree, and a apple crisp for dessert.  The soup was great, but I was a little surprised that I was also offered the thai chicken soup which had been part of the buffet lunch.  I guess soup gets better the longer it sits, but I was still a little surprised (it hadn't been that great at lunch).  Still, the cheddar soup was nice.  The scallops were overcooked, so a little rubbery, and the citrus sauce, while it had a nice flavor, made the pasta gluey as it cooled and "hardened."  Also, there were no vegetables served with the dish--kind of off-putting to just get these four scallops and a pile of gloppy pasta.  The apple crisp lacked apples and had too much sugar--not very crisp.  I was also given a different (smaller) serving than my nephew who also ordered it off the regular menu--this was kind of off-putting.  All in all, if this was my only experience with eating here, I wouldn't recommend it.  However, the lunches we were served all week were really good, so I'm hard put to say the food there isn't good.  It probably is--maybe its what I ordered.  I wouldn't go for the atmosphere--it has cathedral ceilings; and tables are wide apart--it just seems tall, echoey and kind of empty and cold.
