Holly saved my life. Well, my hair at least. And just in time for the upcoming holidays. I'd gone to Holly 3 or 4 times before and was always happy with my cut. She does exactly what I ask for and I always walk out with a smile.

Last month I needed a little trim. I decided to save a few dollars and got a quick haircut from a $12 spot in Chinatown. I already loved my hairstyle since Holly did it and I figured they couldn't do much damage trimming the ends off. Well, 4 inches later my hair was a wreck! For 6 weeks I wore my hair in a ponytail because I was too embarrassed to wear it down.

I was also too embarrassed to show Holly my Edward Scissorhands haircut and ask her to fix it so I waited a bit. I couldn't stand it anymore and Friday I went in to ask Holly to fix it. THANK GOD I did. Of course my hair is perfect again and exactly how I like it. Holly saved the day! To quote Holly, my hair is so perfect right now it could pass for a wig...in a good way. She fixed my uneven butchered hair and took off as little as possible. She's the best!

I will never again stray from Holly!

Wes is everything you want in a hairdresser. Easy on the eyes. Engaging conversationalist. Efficient and fast.

More importantly, I am now sporting the best haircut I've had in a very long time. Maybe ever.

I think my hair has a crush on Holly!  She is possibly the best thing to happen to my hair ever.

I used to be a bit commitment-phobic when it came to getting my hair colored..always going from one stylist to the next.  For some reason no one ever seemed to be able to get my coloring right.  I love natural looking blond highlights with lots of dimension, but they always turned out too bold or bright or chunky, etc.  Holly is the one stylist that just gets it right each and every time.  Besides being skilled with her tools, she takes the time to listen to what I want and even look through my scraps of photos ripped out of magazines.  I now enjoy going to the salon, having a glass of wine and fun girl chat with Holly without worrying about what my hair will look like once those foils come off.

I only have a simple hair style requirement and I am sure that they can do a simple hair cut for me and they did. My stylist works fast and it came out really nice!

I missed that day in girl class when we learned all abut getting pampered. I've never been to a spa, the last manicure I had was sometime in early 2008, and I always wait to get my hair cut until my mom finally tells me it's starting to look scraggly.

Sensing my need for a pampering intervention, my pal Wes offered me an amazing deal on cut and color. Hallelujah friend...my hair was seriously starting to look like a hot mess!

I inflict a lot of heat damage on my hair whilst drying, straightening and curling, and stylists always give me a hard time about it. I don't like feeling judged, and unnecessary criticism is one of my biggest stylist pet peeves. It all stems from a childhood incident when I cut my own bangs. My mom took me in to have them fixed and the woman kept laughing at my cutting skillz. I was having none of it....those bangs ruled. Somehow, Wes managed not to offend me even once! He gave me tips on styling and products without making it seem like what I do now is all wrong.

I wanted to keep my hair long, so Wes trimmed off just enough to get rid of my super split ends without losing too much length. He added some long layers to add movement to my 'do. I had a lot going on with my color -- from an old dye job that was now faded and splotchy, to my overgrown roots, to the random blonde pieces in front that lighten in the sun. Knowing I'm not great with the upkeep, Wes brought me closer to my natural color and then accented it with a few different browns. I met a friend for lunch afterward and she made no less than 7 comments about how much BETTER my color looks.

The salon itself is awesome....small and intimate with cute and friendly decor (yes decor can be friendly). No pretentious vibes around here.  Wes and I chatted about important issues of the day -- the latest on Top Chef and Real Housewives, the strong cultural need for an 'N Sync reunion, the general amazingness of those matching denim outfits Britney and Justin wore back in 2001, etc.

I had rolled out of bed for this appointment and showed up in sweats. As I walked to catch the bus afterward a man came up to me and told me I looked beautiful. Holy crap, my hair really does look amazing! I just might get used to this pampering thing after all...thank you Wes!!

Well, HELLO, Acme Head & Body. You're a sexy little salon, aren't you? Oh, yes, yes you are. Sexy enough, in fact, for me to overlook the horrifically irritating Alanis Morissette song that was playing when I came in for my appointment (and I LIKE Alanis, okay? it was bad). Photography on the walls, vintage vanities used as work stations (awesome touch) with cute lamps on them. Definitely a vibe I can dig. Attractive, hip, oft-tattooed staff? No complaints from Ashley. That's one of the things I like about my go-to salon in Berkeley. But this place is much sexier. Better ambiance. Better work stations!

I had a 2:30 appointment with Wes, but, because I always (always) get to BART just in time to NOT make my train, I called and the appointment was pushed back an hour. Props to Wes for being understanding and allowing me to come in later than I was supposed to. I know how irritating that is.

To cut to the chase: this place is expensive. Not ridiculous as far as nice salons go, but it ain't Super Cuts, and even if you're a guy just looking to have a few inches trimmed here and there, you're gonna spend upwards of $50. But, as they say, you get what you pay for. So if you come in and have your hair cut and colored with highlights, while you'll be dropping about $300 (before tip), your hair's gonna look good.

I generally do color modeling at Peter Thomas Hair in Berkeley (who doesn't love having over $100 worth of stuff done to their hair for a $20 fee?), and I've noticed that, because they're still training at the salon, the stylists there tend to be very precious about what they're doing. Not that I'm complaining, as my color has come out great both times I've gone there. It's simply that the caution and deliberateness is something that I'm used to. Stripping my hair of previous dye, bleach, sitting under hot lights--the whole shebang. Wes does NOT operate in this manner. I've never had someone cut my hair in such a seemingly cavalier manner--and I mean that in a good way. It looks just as good as if he'd spent a lot more time looking at it and pondering exactly where layers should go. Same goes for the dye. It was put on quickly and, when compared to the aforementioned preciousness, in a seemingly haphazard manner. And it looks AWESOME. Clearly, dude knows what he's doing.

Props for keeping me longer to make sure the red streaks in my hair were brighter and wouldn't fade quickly. The dedication to customer satisfaction and to making sure that the client's needs/desires are met is really important and scores major points in my book. Add to that the fact that my hair was done by a friendly, nice (and cute) guy, and that Christie, the assistant who helped on me while Wes had to tend to other clients, was super nice and did a good job and there you have yourself a 5 star review.

I feel cuter, I look cuter, and a lot of the staff is cute. They also seem pretty friendly. They also do color modeling here, so if you're a cheapy, it's definitely something to look into. Not for people who only want to spend $35 on a haircut, but the results live up to the price. So if you're like me and have a bad habit of getting your hair sexified and then letting it go for MONTHS and MONTHS, make an appointment with Wes and your once split end-ridden hair will thank you.

With the desire for a drastic hair cut, I knew I had to find the best place...so I turned to Yelp and took the risk.

After reading the reviews for this place, I decided to book my appointment with Clifford.

WHAT I HAD: My hair at the time was naturally really really wavy (ridiculously frizzy), thick, and long (mid-back).

WHAT I WANTED: Short, straight, slanted modern bob. (Rihanna-ish). I brought pics with me to show Clifford exactly what I wanted.

WHAT I GOT: Mid-length, super straight, slanted modern bob! Wayyyyyyyyyy better than I could have dreamed of! I felt soooooooooooo gorgeous afterwards and got TONS AND TONS AND TONS of compliments after posting pics on facebook. My friends, family, and most importantly..me..LOVED it. LOVED my side-swept bangs!

The cost of my cut was about $90 -- pricey, but DEFINITELY worth his true expertise. I wouldn't risk such a dramatic haircut anywhere else but the best.

Clifford is a magician! And definitely a perfectionist!

I can't wait for my hair to grow long again just to have him cut it again -- I will definitely be going back to try out a new look at a longer length.

*NOTE*: Refer to my pics on Acme Head & Body's Yelp pic page to see drastic transformation!

I have crazy, curly, frizzy hair from numerous dye jobs. I had heard of the infamous Brazilian Blow-Out before but wasn't convinced it would work. I called Acme Salon and talked to Holly Howard. She squelched any fears I had and after a consult with her I knew it was meant to be. She did the most AMAZING job ever! My hair is soft and manageable without taking hours of straightening or blow drying! It completely eliminated my fried hair and Holly was an absolute doll.

SO WORTH IT!!!

Overrated.  I am very particular about my highlights, and based upon the reviews was confident that my hair would come out looking great.  I got chunky blond highlights that were covered with a toner that turned my hair on the orange side.  My haircut was fine, but I would skip the highlights especially considering the price.

After years of seeing Holly, I have still never left her salon wanting. She consistently gives me perfect precision cuts that look good from the day I see her to the day I return for a trim. She always listens to what I want and she always delivers something even better than I had pictured. I wear my hair relatively short and straight and tend to be a bit on the picky side, so trust me when I say you can really see the quality of her work in my very-straight ends.

Thanks Holly! I'll be back soon!

I have a serious case of hair A.D.D. It started in 7th grade, when I realized my naturally drab, dirty blonde, stringy hair just wasn't right. Since then, my hair has been long, short, mid-length, with bangs, without bangs, platinum blonde, dark brunette, and everything in between. A couple of days ago, I decided I wanted to chop my hair short. So after reading all these great Yelp reviews, I decided Lindsay sounded like the perfect gal for the job. So I made an appointment online for the following afternoon.

I told Lindsay that I wanted to cut it above the shoulders, she gave a few suggestions, and then she set to work. I am pretty sure she gave the best shampoo I've ever had... ahhh so relaxing. Anyway, Lindsay gave me probably the best haircut I've ever had - short, stylish, and a little more "grown up" - just what I needed. It's only been 24 hours, and I've already gotten so many compliments. Even on the bus, I heard someone say "I like her hair" to her friend... and I turned, and yes, they were looking at me :)

Clothes make the man, and hair makes the woman.

C'mon ladies. Forreals. Guys don't care what you're wearing. They just care how long it's going to take to get it off.

But hair. They think about what it'd be like to have a fistful of that gorgeous, silky hair (http://static.px.yelp....), while you have a mouthful of...yeah you know.

I made an appointment with Wes to lighten my hair color a bit, and he happily obliged to my request, along with his own wise advice to maintain a natural shade (http://static.px.yelp....).

His consistency in work ethic shined through as he sectioned, highlighted and blew out my hair as last time (http://static.px.yelp....). He even gave me suggestions to how I could achieve the salon look at home, along with helpful tips to hair cuts suitable for my face shape and personal style.

In addition to his amazing skills, he was very attentive and offered me additional magazines and a beverage when I was waiting for my hair color to set.

When Wes was finished, I was so breathless by the beautiful results (http://static.px.yelp....), that I booked a haircut appointment with him immediately, despite never having my hair cut by another.

Stop dressing like a ho to get noticed. Wes's magic does the trick.

Case in point? A guy asked me out when I was crossing the street afterwards. And he was still driving in his car!

Maybe now I can put on more clothes since no one cares about them anyways :P

For some reason, going into the hair salon feels like going into confession. Instead of the priest asking you, "When was your last confession?" The hair stylist asks you, "When was your last haircut?" Every time I'm in the hot chair and I get asked those questions, I always reluctantly answer as my voice trails off....

The last time I got my hair cut was last March, which isn't too bad. When I left the place, my hair had pretty layers and soft auburn highlights. A mere 4 months later, my hair was just a mess. Dry ends. The soft auburn highlights turned a bleach blond. Grown out layers that looked hideous.

Here comes Wes to the rescue! He went through step by step what he had envisioned for my hair. I had full trust and confidence in him and his abilities -- permission to blow my mind. And he did just that! The bleach blond were magically turned into a darker auburn mocha, which he assured wouldn't end up too blond when it fades. The overall tint changed from a deep black to a chocolate brown.

Needless to say, Wes made me feel glam again! With every passing window and mirror and a pip in my step, I couldn't help but look at my new do. Thanks again Wes for turning my frumpy grossness of hair into something I can actually look at in the mirror everyday :-)

Lindsay has been making me beautiful for years!!  For some reason, I waited way too long between cuts this last time.  I finally got into the salon last week and I sat down with a sigh of relief and let her do her thing.  I have been growing my hair out for quite some time and she has been helping me keep it healthy without taking too much off at every appointment.  (Ok, ok, maybe I can be a little annoying with my passive-aggressive micro-managing, but still.  She puts up with me with a smile.)
My hair looks great flat-ironed straight or curly, and I have been getting compliments all week!
The main thing is I always leave feeling like a supermodel, or at least like I should be painting the town red that night.  Also, I always have fun chatting it up with her.  She rocks!

Walked in today and they were surprised someone would just walk in.  Holly cut my hair and did a fantastic job.

They are a low key shop with high quality stylists and no stuffy attitude.

It was a top notch experience with friendly people and a very nice haircut.

My aunt owns a salon back home, and this is going to be my choice from now on. They even do online scheduling so you can plan your hair appointments.  They carry Pureology which frankly is the best stuff you can buy for taking care of your hair.

Me and my girlfriend highly recommend it!

This place is absolutely great.  The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it's simply not the most luxurious and nice setting inside the salon.  It's a little cramped, that's all.  Other than that I had a perfect experience and Preston is incredibly nice and a great hair stylist.  I highly recommend this salon to anyone who wants a great haircut from a great stylist, but isn't necessarily worried about the size and fanciness of the location.  I'll be going back here for sure...

As I've told Lindsay the last time I saw her, I liked my hair so much I wanted to put her in my pocket!

It's been a while since I've seen her but ever since I stepped into Acme, I've always loved what she did for my hair (thick and wavy). I searched for stylists that know how to deal with curly hair and I'm happy that I found Lindsay! She knows how to control the poof and layer it in a way that frames my face. I LOVE the blow-outs- they make my hair feel and look great!

She always has a great attitude and her prices are pretty reasonable.

I've gotten my hair done at Acme twice now and it's been amazing! Wes Pine is the best colorist I've ever been too. He turned my fading wannabe blond into a gorgeous chocolate brown. I've never gotten so many compliments on my hair as I have the last couple weeks. And Wes is a sweetheart. I've known him for years and he's just a super positive person.

Ok, so I am not a big yelp reviewer.  I say this so you know that if I come on and give a rave review it is because I really want to share my experience.

I moved to SF nine years ago.  Since then, I have tried several stylists.  I went to all of the top name places and saw what I was told were the top stylists.  You see, I am particular.  I don't have a ton of hair and if it is not cut right it looks horrible in two weeks.  It seemed that my first cut with everyone was pretty good.  After that, it started going downhill.  They did not continue to put the effort into my haircuts.  This is why I have gone from shop to shop...Architect's and Hero's, Cowboys and Angels, DiPeitro Todd and so on.  I have now found a home.

Holly has consistently given me a great haircut.  Not only does my wife tell me it is the best haircut I have gotten in SF, I love the way it looks every time I walk out the door.  Holly gives my hair the attention it needs and is never distracted.  As a bonus, she is sweet and personable.

What to expect when you visit Holly: a great cut, a warm welcome and a feeling like you are glad to be there.  You are in good hands with Holly.

It is official. Wes is actually as good as all the reviews say.  Not that I had any doubt since he had worked on my hair before at another salon, but my haircut by him yesterday is beautiful!

He works fast, he works clean, he does it with a smile and he is so pleasant.
...and in no time at all, he has given you an amazing haircut, blow dried your hair and you are swiveling around to look at the back of your now beautiful head in the hand mirror!

I also love Acme salon itself.  The decor is so neat and unique.  It is well lit, open, and I love all the vintage dressers.  It is very "urban chic".

the moral of the story:

If you have hair, you need Wes.

Found this place on Yelp. Emailed Wes for an appt. and he was able to work with me and my budget. The hair cut and highlights were good right afterwards but to be honest I felt a little disappointed when I went home, I was expecting more wow. After a few days though the color really came out and the cut really took shape. I have to say I will be going back and that Wes is amazing. He will take suggestions or make suggestions if you're unsure. He didn't do anything drastic and my hair felt amazing for a week after.

Change is a good thing.

As much as I loved being a blonde, I decided it was time to go back to my roots, dark as they are.  The upkeep was annoying.

So, I found myself here today, and Wes (http://www.yelp.com/us...) did my color.  He is AMAZING!!!  He truly has a gift because he did it with such ease and the color looks fantastic.  I basically told him what I was after and let him go to work.  Sometimes when I've gone darker it looks like a flat wig but he somehow put some dimension in there and it looks really natural.

The entire process was really quick and I'm so happy.  He even made my wavy hair look good by drying it with a round brush (I'm all thumbs).  Check out my profile pictures for the after color.

Even though he's in the city and I'm in Dublin, he's worth the trip on BART, and anyone who knows me knows I'm cheap, so Wes is that good!  I added two pictures, check them out!!

I'll definitely be back. :)

p.s. the salon is on the second level, right near Grant on the same side as the Paul Frank shop.  If you take BART, it's a quick walk from Montgomery.

My hair needed help---lots of help.  I had a horrible color job done at a salon in Sacramento that a friend recommended to me (I love her hair and decided to try out her guy while I was visiting) and I HATED it!  I finally couldn't take it anymore and decided to do some research online to find someone close to my office to get it fixed.

After a lot of searching I found ACME salon.  I decided to try out Clifford since he seemed to have a lot of great reviews.  I was a little tentative about having more stuff done to my over processed hair already so I decided to meet him for a consultation.

I was so impressed when I met him!  He had his own little room in the salon which It's like a salon in a salon!  We talked about the best way to get my hair looking right again and after just vaguely describing what I wanted my hair to look like he pulled out a magazine and flipped to a page and said, "You want to look like this right?"  At that moment I knew he was the one!

I made an appointment with him for the following week and I couldn't be happier with the end result!!! My hair has never looked this shiny or healthy!  And the cut is perfect!  He even retouched my makeup after he was done with my hair!!!  I left his salon feeling absolutely fabulous!

Go to Clifford!  He is a hair genious and one of the sweetest men I've ever met!

Wes.

Gotta say I am really bad at going back to the same hairstylist and with Wes, I am scheduling appointments for the future!

Cut.  Fantastic cut, Wes makes it look so easy.  I don't do anything to it except drive with my windows down to blow dry!  I get tons of compliments!

Color.  I've had lots of color.  Wes has nailed it.  The perfect chocolate brown with tender highlights and subtle red.  Perfect.  My boyfriend tells me how beautiful I am these days.

Personality.  I really like chatting with him.  Not the usual bs with neither of us actually listening.   Wes is a nice guy, very approachable, young and vibrant.  He listens to your needs and really can pull it off. Good communicator about appointments and very flexible.  The salon is cool, love the atmosphere.  Not at all pretentious!

Thanks, Wes!  You really deserve all of the great posts here on Yelp and I hope you don't get too busy for me!

In the three years I've lived in the Bay Area, I've only had my hair cut 6 times... because I'm really picky about salons.

Some stylists are great with the scissors but I can't deal with the attitude, others are fun but give mediocre cuts, and it's always a challenge to find a salon where a girl can get a quality cut and blowout for under $100 (not including tip).

Wes is a HAIR GENIUS.  He's also funny and great to talk to.  About 4 months ago I chopped off 16 inches for Locks of Love, and while I don't regret it, I miss my long hair.  I am totally lost when it comes to styling my own hair, and a bob is a lot more maintenance than I expected - I could never get the results I wanted styling myself.  We did a consultation, he asked me what my routine is, what I like and what I don't like, and whether my hair has any quirks (plenty).  I didn't care what he did as long as it looks good and lets me grow out my bob gracefully.  My haircut looks AMAZING.  And I didn't have to sacrifice more than a half inch of length!  I washed this morning and was able to replicate the results, hooray for an easy routine!

SO HAPPY... hair looks hot, I had fun and the price is right :)  Plus the location is really convenient!

Did I really just get the best haircut of my life for $60?!  Yes, I did.

Carol - the sweetie pie she is - was enlivened rather than overwhelmed when I said I didn't know what I wanted in a haircut.  She even deduced something I didn't realize myself; I need a haircut that is both professional and fun.  She gave me a great part in the middle and I now feel like a movie star.

I have curly hair, and she worked with it really great.  She understood how much hair curls and used it to her advantage.  Curly hair is not the same on everyone, and she innately understood my curl and coarseness.  She was amazing, and I highly recommend her.

The place itself has an adorable atmosphere, and I liked it.  Spacey for a SF place, and in a great location too.  Really close to BART and MUNI.

I went in for a hair appointment last week with Preston, and it was A-W-E-S-O-M-E. I came in not knowing what to expect and a mop full of hair that needed to be cut. Preston had some really great ideas not only for how to cut it, but also how to style and manage it. I've been to so many stylists that just cut your hair and don't offer any suggestions or help on how to manage, style, etc.  He should change his title to "Hair Education Specialist"...he's like the Professor of Style at Acme Head and Body University. You can tell Preston is really passionate about what he does and i will definitely be referring all of my clients to him for their haircut/styling needs!

I have crazy long, thick curly hair that some stylists wouldn't even want to mess with or they just try and get me to straighten it.  I dont trust anyone to cut my hair unless its Wes Pine. He always does an amazing job and is a really amazing person. You know that he will always tell you the truth, whether its about your hair or the drama in your life. He works fast and is more knowlegable than any stylist I have ever been to. His color work is beautiful and always turns heads. He works magic and I hope I can always be his client.

Wes is  hair god. Guaranteed to give you the best cut/color ever. After living 15 years in SF, he's one of the best stylists I've ever been to and and affordable.

Treat yourself. Go see Wes and come out with lucious locks!

I am extremely picky about my hair, but I felt like I really needed a change, so I put all my faith in your Yelpy hands, and asked Lindsay to work her magic, as advertised.  Boy, did she!

BEFORE: I looked like Anyong from Arrested Development.  Okay, maybe it wasn't that bad, but let's just say I was not happy with short, choppy layers in various places that stopped above my ears.

DURING: Lindsay really listened to what I had to say and asked a lot of questions about my hair (how do I style it? what hair products do I use? do I wear a ponytail often?...) to make sure that what she was giving me would be manageable.  She played around with it a little bit before actually using her shears.  I requested Anne Hathaway a la The Devil Wears Prada - long, sexy layers and a fringe of bangs.  We decided on sexy, longer layers to frame my "great cheekbones" (thanks, Lindsay!) and longer, wispy, less severe bangs.

AFTER: Although she didn't take off a lot of hair (due to my request to keep it on the longer side), the results were FAB!  My hair was lighter and swingier, my bangs were definitely funky (and trimmed that way on a whim, but it kinda works...), and the blowout was awesome - pretty much the best I've ever had.  Lindsay did this weird twisty thing with the hairbrush while blowdrying so as to create more volume - VERY clever.  All this for a mere $90, which is pretty much a steal in SF...though I could go with paying even less, of course, given the fact that not much hair was taken off.  Plus, it was pretty fast, which I always appreciate.

I am one happy customer, and I'd definitely come back.

I'll keep it simple. Lindsay Wachs is the BEST - EVER! She is friendly, laid-back, professional and easygoing. She listens to what you want and gives it to you! She can take my sad attempt to describe the perfect cut/style and make it into a reality. Of all the haircuts I've had in my life, Lindsay is the only one who has succeeded at giving me exactly what I want! And she does it every single time! Best shampoo massage and great conversation! I heart Lindsay and you will too!  Tell her Raquel sent ya!

Clifford is a creative genius!  This man gave the most beautiful haircut of my life, without my even asking for it.  Here's my story:

I walk into the funky Acme salon and ask for Clifford.  I was a little confused as there was no receptionist, but if I can manage finding my way through Shanghai alone, I can certainly figure things out at a Union Square salon.  Finally, I tell a hair dresser that I was there to see the mastermind.

His kind assistant gives me a great wash and a head massage to go along with it.  Heavenly.

I finally make my way into Clifford's private little room.  He is so kind, and fun!  He plays music videos...and good one's too!  It's like being in a one-person salon, and all attention is on you!

Clifford asks me what I want.  I tell him I have only two goals in life: to be skinny and to have long hair; therefore, I want a haircut that isn't short and doesn't make my face look fat.  45 minutes later, I am Anne Hathaway from The Devil Wears Prada, HOT!!!

This is by far my favorite haircut.  Clifford has an amazing vision and is completely honest with his clients.  He is great with long hair!

P.S.  He clips my bangs every other week, without notice, for free!

This review is for Clifford:

I went in for a cut and a hair tint.

Cut = 5 stars
Great movement, nicely layered

Tint = 1 star
I asked for a brown color, and he used some Matrix color that he left on for 20 minutes.  It didn't show at all.  So basically, I spent 150 bucks for color that looks like my virgin hair.  I did email him a few days later, and he told me to come back in for him to fix in a week or two if the color doesn't get better, but I didn't have time to go back, so I passed.  For that price, and for someone of his expertise, I expected color that showed.  BTW, Wella Koleston is the best hair color around, esp. if you are Asian.  So if a stylist isn't using that on you....look for another one.

Service = 3 stars
Not rude, but a little full of himself, and it comes out in the way he interacts.
