This is the best coffee spot in Portland. I've been to about fifty of them, and this one just plain wins. Comfortable, quiet, mellow. Friendly owner. There are a dozen coffee shops between my house and Acme and I never want to stop at any of them. Acme is where it's at.

    Hope it's around forever.

Acme is a welcoming and warm coffeeshop built into an old house off of Hawthorne on SE 40th. One of the owners, Ken, was unbelievably friendly and we chatted for a little while as he fixed my iced mocha for me in the 90 degree weather. This place has some kitsch going for it. Old vintage signs, i.e. "beauty shoppe", "gents" and much more adorn the front of this place, but the inside is very open with a sprinkling of local photography on the walls.

I dig it. There is WIFI and places to hook up your laptop. And the price of coffee and tea ain't bad at all. The most expensive beverage I see from my seat is a large mocha for $3.70.

I can definitely see myself coming back, rain or shine.

After reading a friend's blog about Acme, the husband and I decided to branch out and bypassed our usual Albina coffee stop for Acme a little further down Hawthorne.

Well, this turned out to be fail. It seems Acme is closed. The gentleman working in the space said, "Acme Coffee isn't located here anymore," but then also said, "we will be re-opening on the 17th with a new food menu."

This leaves me pretty confused as to whether Acme will remain located here or if something entirely new is opening on May 17th. I guess, I'll have to drop by and see, but for now Acme Coffee is Closed.

After getting a haircut next door, I felt in the mood for coffee and found this little place.  It is literally someone's house, a lovely porch with vintage signs posted everywhere and a bench swing.  I ordered a mocha and a raisin bagel.   I decided to swing by this place again before I left Portland with my laptop(wifi!) and ordered the same thing.  I just enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere.

Definitely my favorite coffee shop in the Hawthorne/Belmont 'hood. It's homey cuz it's actually in a house. The decor is crazy awesome, totally pastiche ala every retro diner you've ever been to. The staff is super sweet and won't mind if you hang out for a while using their wifi. And they have pretty good coffee too.

Ken, a co-owner, is one of the best barista's I've ever encountered. I've seen him deftly prepare the most delicious espresso (and the fluffiest dry cappuccinos) while engaging in witty banter. This is truly a place to make yourself a regular. I'm only sad I live so far away!

A true neighborhood coffee shop. The big porch is fantastic, and the interior is light and airy. Good coffee (Ristretto Roasters) at reasonable prices. Open Mic night, local artists, even the occasional impromptu BBQ. Most importantly, the owners are genuinely warm and welcoming.

This place is super comfortable and welcoming.  The barista is friendly and the coffee is good.  and they have these AMAZING Cookies!  YUM!  There is all of this art and old knick knacks everywhere too.  Overall it is just a great place to have a cup of coffee.

This was one of my favorite experiences while visiting Portland. I needed to stop somewhere and get a bite before biking up Mt. Tabor, and ran into this coffee shop after a homeless man scared me inside.  Even though it was only 10:30 am, the barista made me a veggie dog and a Jarritos soda. There was a woman with a dog drinking coffee and complaining about a recent breakup, and man with a baby reading the paper. The proprietor (and all the customers) gave me ideas of what to see while I was in town. And they serve their hotdogs with barbeque chips. Hell yes. They also had the best bathroom of anything I saw in that town. I could have flossed in there.

I love old houses...I love businesses in old houses...I love coffee (Ristretto Roasters!)...and I love it when people are awesome which the owners of this place are. It's nice that this place is not right on Hawthorne because it's more mellow that way. New favorite place.
