ACME - the time honored symbol of quality.  At ACME Bread, it's TWOOOOO!

If you eat and like bread and haven't had Acme I feel very sorry for you.  Their sourdough and rustic loaves, the olive loaf, the herb or onion slabs, the great rolls, baguettes of many persuasions... you just need to go line up, gawk and try.

Don't forget cash.   Acme's prices are a bargain for the quality.   I bet you will have a hard time getting home or to your next stop without ripping into some of your purchases.  What a good problem to have.

Located within the Ferry Marketplace, there is nothing sexier to me than a place that just sells bread. That is rather unfair to my undoubtedly crazy carb fetish.

I ordered a sandwich from their extremely long list of 3 sandwiches, which makes picking quite easy. Before I decided on Acme, I was going to go to another place that was a dairy place. No worries, the sandwiches here use the cheese made from the dairy across the way. Double win!

While maybe not my most favorite bread in the world, it was tasty and just crunchy enough to stand.

Probably the one thing that didn't make this 5-stars was the fact that their food wasn't made fresh to order. My sandwich was just grabbed from a pile that were already made. How long had it been sitting there?

The sign of a great bakery is highly-rated restaurants across the city advertising that they use your bread.  Acme is well-known around the bay area and it's well-deserved.  Extremely affordable prices on all their rolls and breads.  Their pastries and sandwiches are a little bit pricier.

They don't slice their breads to maximize freshness (and only have paper bags for similar reasons).  One of their best items is the single-serving focaccia with seasonal toppings served from 11:30 AM until sold out.

This is the best french baguette outside of Paris I've ever had in the U.S. Unfortunately I moved to oregon and whenever friends visit i ask for a baguette or batard smashed into their luggage. I don't care what it looks like.
When I was living in SF, sometimes the truck wouldn't come to the store until 11am; I didn't care. I'd go back until it got there.

The breads here are awesome. They really know how to bake some mean starchy objects, and they don't charge a boat load either.

The Berkeley location is certainly more unique, although this outpost really just fits right into Ferry Plaza. Providing bread to all of the artisan cafes and the like in this complex, Acme seems like the center to the spoke!

The rye raisin rabbit combines some of my most favorite items in assorted breads: raisins and rye. This little guy provides a hint of tartness and an abundance of raisin. He is slightly crusty and gives a little resistance on the inside.Good stuff for a midday snack!

The cheese round is oddly formed. It is boasts a whole mess of gluten, being almost TOO tense, but then you realize chewing it is half the fun, mainly because it is SO heavy on the cheddar (?) flavor. It is like sticking a piece of Cheddar gum in your mouth. Oh, back to the shape. It is rolled up, cinnamon roll style. I don't know why, but it sure makes it a heck of a lot easier to pull apart into large gumball shapes.

ABC doesn't need much advertising, but I just like to mark down where I have been. The system of Yelp is fun because you get to mark EVERY physical place you have been. I have had a boatload of Acme before, but after having it at Ferry, I was able to rightfully Yelp it once again. Nice.

How I was able to resist tearing my green onion slab - GOS - apart during the SIX hours it sat on my desk, its amazing aroma wafting over and teasing me, has to indicate some sort of willpower despite the fact that I will now probably go home and devour the whole damn thing.

I love Acme's GOS and have a very hard time not picking one up for $3.55 everytime I'm at the Ferry Building.  In fact, sometimes when I visit Acme too late in the day, and they're out of this heavenly bread, deep down - way, way deep down - I am kind of relieved because I know my body cannot handle eating nearly an entire slab of bread in one sitting.  Again.

A creature of habit, I've only ever gotten the GOS (well, minus the one time, due to a brain fart, I accidentally ordered the herb slab instead), so I cannot attest to the Acme's other offerings, but the green onion slab is enough for me!

I was on a shopping spree in the Ferry Building purchasing supplies for cooking dinner.

I was making pulled pork and wanted something beyond just a normal hamburger bun for the sandwiches.

I shopped around picking up the other things I required and checking along the way to see if the line at Acme Bread Company had waned.  I finally completed the remainder of my shopping.  The line had slightly diminished.

I have to admit though,  the line moved quickly.

When it reached my turn, I told the fine counter attendant that I was seeking a bread to use for pulled pork sandwiches.  She said that out of what was remaining her favorite for something like that was the green onion loaf.  I said that will do.  I paid.  We said our goodbyes and I was off.

I have to say the bread worked perfectly.  It was soft enough on the inside to soak up some of the sauciness of the pulled pork.  But it did not get soggy at all and held its shape very well.  Oh, and it was delicious.  The green onion added just a little special something..  My only regret is that I should have bought two loaves.

Pulled Pork Sandwich on Green Onion Loaf

Overall, the attendant was very helpful and very friendly.  On the whole, even though it was very busy, the staff were nice to everyone and did not seem to be bothered by the hectic pace.  I also saw that some of the attendants were patiently helping others determine which bread would best meet their need.  In the end, it is all about the product.  I really enjoyed the texture and subtle flavor of the green onion loaf.  I would not hesitate to try it again.  But, I also want to try some more of their breads.

The bread here is heavenly and I will never be able to find bread like this ever again.  You think I'm joking, but I'm serious.  Whenever I eat bread here in SoCal, my heart breaks a little.  I can't wait to visit NorCal again to rip into a feast of Acme Bread and feel my soul become whole again.  If I could marry Acme Bread, I would.  On our wedding night, I would worship that bread like it was the second coming of Christ.

Sourdough batard, pain au levain, cranberry walnut, oh my!

SO MANY CHOICES. I'm overwhelmed every time I come, but no matter what I randomly point to, I always walk away happy. Acme bread is unwaveringly amazing and not terribly pricy. You can get a fairly large hunk of bread for as little as $2.50.

I often get the large sourdough batard for around $3 or $3.5. I swear I eat through that thing like candy. The only bread item from Acme that has ever underwhelmed me is the pumpkin roll. Everything else..DELICIOUS. I will never buy bread in a grocery store again.

    Beware: Cash Only!

Olive batard, what happened to you???  I brought you home and the next evening you had disappeared, never to be seen again.

The few slices we had together were amazing, heavenly, I really would've liked to continue this relationship further.  But I left you in the kitchen all alone by yourself too long, and other people wanted to get their hands on you too.

I understand though.  You're just so beautiful, and perfect in every way, why wouldn't you get snatched up the second I let my attention wander?  It's okay though, I know there are plenty of Olive Batards and breads in the bakery that are also interesting and comes in different shapes and sizes. You're my number one though.  *weeps*

Acme Bread knows how to make bread! I go to ferry building practically daily to pick up a couple rolls, a baguette or a slab of bread.

The bread is fresh and soft. Even if you cant eat the bread in one sitting, it is great reheated in the oven/toaster.

Auspicious cicumstances in San Francisco afforded me opportunities to indulge in the same sandwich on consecutive days...

Acme Bread Company prepares three daily sandwiches for purchase until sold out or 2 pm, whichever comes first.

My sammy - sweet rustic bread enclosing fig jam (fruit spread changes at their discretion), Cowgirl Creamery Mt Tam cheese, arugula and cracked black pepper!  Sweet Mother Nature!  I cried when I penetrated the sandwich!  How can this be?  It's creamy, sweet, chewy and majestic!  Magical combination, a symphony of UHMAZING!

    Namaste!

I know they sell Acme bread at lots of supermarkets and specialty food stores, but somehow the epi just doesn't taste as light and chewy anywhere else.  I'd argue that their epi is better than the one at Bouchon.  It's always fresh, crisped just right outside, so sweet inside.  This is the perfect accompaniment to anything from Boccalone or Cowgirl.

The line is always long, but it's definitely worth it.

    My heart is broken.

Getting off work early is a rare treat. I can't think of a better way to spend it than with fabulous people and a stroll around the Ferry Building. Upon arriving, I realized that I may still have a chance to pick up a ham and cheese turnover before it sells out! While one of us was off to Blue Bottle, I had to make a quick beeline for Acme Bread. Once I got to the front of the line, I was told the apple turnover was sold out. I asked about the ham and cheese turnover and the man behind the counter had to break the news to me.

The ham and cheese turnover has been discontinued.

How do you mend a broken heart? I imagine the cure is something with a flaky layered crust, teeny cubes of ham peppered in gooey cheese.

Please come back. I will splurge on my gluten intake just for you. I miss you.

STAY AWAY FROM THE SANDWICHES! STICK WITH THE BREAD!

    BREAD: 5 stars
    SANDWICHES: 2 stars

I made the mistake of ordering the Salame Sandwich. Boy, was the bread excellent. But the sandwich is QUITE small. Included inside is a very, very thin slice of salame.

I may return, but will just order bread next time.

TIP: Buy bread here, and combine with the meat at one of the several meat specialty shops in the Ferry Building. YUM!

I'm a carbo-vore!  My love of breads started at a young age; I remember seeing a picture of me as a toddler with a third of a baguette in one hand.  For the past year I've been discovering how yummy Acme Bread is every time I get Roli Roti's orgasmic Porchetta sandwich.  While the bread is delicious, the Porchetta outshines everything!

The true test though was this weekend when my cousin brought over Acme's Pain Epi.  Oh my!  It was so delish, I didn't even need butter!  Chewy and hard enough & not too much flour dusting.  Their bread is super fresh too!  Watch out for me on BART I may accidentally whack you with a baguette or two, but at least you'll be hit by good bread!

There's just something about carbs that you just cant hate on. Cheese, pasta, bread, they are all the things that make my life go round, and that is why whenever like I wanna splurge on my carbs, I head down to Acme bread and devour the goodies they have there.

The rosemary rolls are sooo delicious. and so are the baguettes, the french rolls and the foccacia. So so good. Pop in next door to Cowgirl Creamery and indulge even more in gluttony :D

Such great yummy bread!  We got:  the rustic roll, herb bread, croissant, and the cinnamon swirl.

This place is all about the bread.  I read some negative reviews about their premade sandwiches.  Ummm... did you take a look around yet?  the Ferry Building is a freaking market with artisanal specialties!  Next door is a cheese shop, and after that a specialty cured meats shop.  Make your own sammy!

    Anyways:
rustic roll - crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.  very solid.  i'd probably like wrapping it in foil and throwing it in the oven to get it steaming hot and slathering a bunch of salty, full-fat French butter on it.
herb bread - it was so aromatic, and full of rosemary and other herbs.  it was really soft and chewy.  it went great with the cheeses and meats we got at the specialty shops.
croissant - i was really disappointed with this.  it wasn't flaky, it wasn't buttery, it actually tasted like bread.  i don't think sweet pastries are their thing...
cinnamon swirl - not bad, but not the best.  it wasn't yeasty and chewy and elasticky like i'm used to.  lots of cinnamon flavor and sugary, but again sweet pastries are NOT the thing to get here.

i'm so sad i don't live in SF.  but probably a good thing because i'd be carbo-loading at this place all day everyday.

I eat way too much bread.

My arms are starting to look like Acme baguettes.  My right thigh- an Italian Batard, left thigh - a Rustic Batard, my fingers and toes look like twinkles (mini baguettes), and do we even need to address my stomach?  Yes my friends, Rounds and Rolls.

My favorite all time bread from Acme is their Pain au Levain.  Whenever I come across a restaurant that serves Acme's Pain au Levain I always request for more throughout the duration of my meal.  The crust is perfectly crisp, and the inside is pillowy but not too airy, chewy but not pizza dough-y.

All of their items are bargain priced. I paid $3 for a loaf of Italian Batard and it looked bigger and felt heavier than my 2 month old nephew.  Friendly service every time I stop by.  Cash only.  High-fives welcome.  Jazz hands optional but not yet widely accepted.

Bread = my friend. my enemy.  my love.  total bane of my existence.  It's a real love-hate relationship--I love bread, and my body hates me for all the carbs. :)

I love the green onion slab here (and when they say slab, they mean a SLAB), and their baguettes (crunchy outsides, soft insides).  And everything else that they make of the baked variety.   I love the bread that's all stuck together in a leaf-like formation, but you can warm it up a bit, and pull it apart.

They don't just have savory breads...they have some sweet pastries too.

    Service = friendly.

This place is cash only, so be prepared.  In other words, don't bother asking re cards.  There is an ATM in the building, or walk your butt down the street, as it IS near the Financial District and get some cash from any of the bank ATMs.

Being married to a baker has made me pickier about bread, and this place is sooo good! I tried the little olive bun as a snack, which had the perfect "sour" taste, could have eaten more than one! Hubby bought a load of sourdough which we toasted for breakfast and was also very tasty with a nice crust and sour flavor.  Definitely stop by this place if you appreciate good bread!

This is some really great bread. You're at the Ferry Building and you can get a great cheap snack to take outside to eat while you're contemplating the beauty of the bay.

My wife and I were there on a gorgeous September Friday morning. We enjoyed the Twinkle and the olive loaf. The Twinkle is a small baguette. Good stuff. The olive loaf though, wow! They sell them in these small 80 cent balls. They are soft and have olives baked in. So delicious.

Acme Bread is a highlight of any trip to the Ferry Terminal.

Bread should make you happy. It should fill you up and give you the boost that horking down a bunch of carbs should naturally give you.

That's why you go to Acme Bread. It's a quick. convenient snack (and strategically located next to Cow Girl Creamery) smack dab in the middle of the Ferry Building. I highly recommend the Danish cheese wheel (baked sourdough with cheddar folded in!) and the sourdough here.

One word of caution: somehow, the employees here didn't get their Blue Bottle coffee in the morning because they all managed to be pretty grumpy with me when I stopped by. I require a smile if I'm going to toss down five bucks for a loaf of bread, guys.

I came here for lunch on Friday afternoon with a friend who was on break from work.  I got the pre-made sandwich that has goat cheese/jam/etc and it was just eh.  There was hardly any cheese on the bread, hardly any jam, or really any flavor.  You essentially just ate BREAD.

The bread was good but there is no seating so you have to stand awkwardly (who wants to stand while eating?) and I felt like the only good thing about it was that it cost me 5.15 verses the outrageous 9 dollar sandwiches that their competitors sell.

Don't think I'll be coming back here again.

OH AND THEY ONLY TAKE CASH.  What is this, 1960???

Okay, I bake bread I eat bread but I do not in no way consider myself a bread snob. Chocolate snob yes , bread snob no.

This review is based off of 2 visits.  Ciebatta bread, sourdough and  the third I forget.

All three loaves were aparently stolen from a construction site that were going to be using them at a later time for building blocks.

    The taste was medicore .

I was dissapointed. However I do love their packaging. Reminds me  of an older time , when bread tasted better then the packaging looked.

    Sorry.

    Fresh baked bread!

Beware, there are long lines on Saturday mornings. I got to the Ferry Building Marketplace only 15 minutes after they opened at 8AM and I was at least #15 in line. I couldn't believe it.

Anyhow, I love bread and I couldn't resist getting a baguette here for my picnic lunch. Between the sourdough and the rustic sweet baguette, I decided to buy the rustic sweet baguette. There were several customers before me that bought the same thing so it must be the bread of choice.

Well, I sure had no complaints. The rustic sweet baguette was the perfect accompaniment to the (salty) salumi and cheese. With a beautiful golden crust and a soft, chewy interior, I couldn't stop nibbling on this bread!

    Price: $1.90 each.

This bread totally wins over Tartine's bread.  I came here today with my brother and bought a huge loaf of sourdough bread, a slab of focaccia, a mini rosemary bread, and a mini rustic bread for about $6.50.  All of them are A++++++++!  They all taste exactly how a perfect piece of bread should taste like..crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside.   This place is a must if you're ever shopping at the Ferry Building!

Whenever I pick up one of the tasty baguettes from Acme Bread Company, I feel a strong urge to beat someone over the head with it. But then I would be depriving myself of its crusty sweet goodness. A tough decision, for sure, but ultimately my stomach wins out.

I don't make it out to the Ferry building as often as I'd like, but when I do, I grab some breads from Acme without fail. I usually opt for the baguettes (sweet, italian, or sourdough), but I've ventured out from time to time. Their bread is so good lightly baked with some butter, or olive oil, or nice cheese from next door. And for the most part, their bread is really cheap! That's not something you'd expect from a top-tier bakery. I love Acme bread.

If one day I decide that I can't resist anymore, you better watch out, cuz I'm coming for you with that sourdough.

We had 2 different baguettes and olive bread buns, which proved to be the best bread investment I've ever made.
I suggest to stay clear of the sourdough baguette, which is weird bec I love sourdough, but this one was tasted really funny.

Their olive bread on the other hand was to die for. Definitely a must, and I would come back to San Francisco JUST for that! mmmm

Acme's sweet baguette and pain epi are easily the best breads that I've ever had. They're perfectly crusty (but not hard) on the outside, and soft and moist on the inside. They've become the standard by which all other breads are measured and fall short. Fresh loaves from Tartine, Bouchon and La Farine are all far inferior. Bring on the challengers, but so far none has proven worthy.

Acme baguette + brie cheese + cherry tomatoes = Woohoo! As good as it gets!

it's pretty simple...best bread in the bay area.  hands down.  I worked in a bakery before and acme has it down to a science.  even their hot dog buns are delicious.  I'd eat those alone without the dog.

Bread isn't overly dense and has a nice (not overly cooked or tough) crust.    I love the onion slab and it makes a great sandwich bread if you grill it up a bit.  There's lots of good bakeries in the area, but no one comes close to acme.  definitely check it out for a great treat in the ferry building.
