I ate another sandwich here today. The cheese sandwich, with Mt. Tam cream cheese, arugula, figs/sweet fruit jam, and black pepper. For $5.15, it was a delicious and light lunch!
+ The bread, as always, was much the crunchies yet didn't hurt the roof of my mouth.
+ The cheese was creamy and light, just how I like it!
+ The fig jam was a great complement! Balances out the cheese! This was also my first time having figs in a sandwich, and I approve now! I will no longer make fun of people who pay homage to trendy figs because there is some truth to it - it IS good!
+ The arugula didn't do much for me, I couldn't really taste it, but at least the color was nice?
It was also such a chilly day, but it was still sunny, and the sky was so blue. Plus, it's almost December, my favorite time of the year. Ah, yes.
So, imagine this: you have a nice, simple sandwich, and you have the Ferry Building, and the sun and the blue, and the water, and the Bay, and the ice skating rink, and the farmers market with free samples.
Don't see anything wrong with the picture?
Well, you're right. There's nothing wrong with that picture. It was just right.

I love me some good bread!
And Acme's certainly got some outstanding bread! I love that I work… Read more »
This place is amazing.
Olive bread, sandwiches during lunch hour, and almond croissants. Don't believe I've gone wrong by picking up a quick bite for lunch or dessert for later. Prices are also pretty fair. A large loaf of olive bread only sets you back about $5.
Imagine a bread so seasoned, so soft you wish you could sleep right between 2 sweet slices. Imagine a bread that makes all your tongue's dreams come true. Today I found my future partner, I am having an affair with Acme's Herb Slab. This is honestly one of the best breads I have ever tasted in my entire life. I bought it from a store in Redwood City and it still tasted freshly baked - out of the oven and cooled style. I bought my loaf to make a GIANT sub sandwich with and while it satisfied every spot as a sandwich I could gorge it all by itself and still be satisfied. It's that good.
The outside isn't hard. It's perfectly pick-up-able with a slight crunch and a soft center. It reminds me of a rosemary potato bread loaf. It's a complete package as it, no over crisping or reheating. It's good to go.
My super sub sandwich of shame:
Acme herb slab, monster meats: turkey bacon, turkey ham, smoked turkey, roast beef, cotti salami... cheese: edam, dill harvarti, provolone... red onion, tomatoes, red leaf lettuce... mayo, olive oil, herb seasonings, garlic powder, garlic salt and black pepper... honey mustard on the roast beef... this beats any deli!!! This is downright insane!!! I can't imagine how yummy it would be if I bought it freshly made and still warm from the shop. I might not be able to contain myself. I may get so weak in the knees that I might just pass out.
This bread really is pass out worthy. Honest.
Herb slab is my new favorite. I can't wait to try the rest! I am now on a hunt to find out where they sell this bread on the Peninsula. I'm sure many gourmet stores will have it. My loaf was just under 5 bucks and worth every penny. I thought I was splurging with huge Dutch Crunch sub rolls at other stores but this one defeats them all.
I now bow to thou bread!
A whole assortment of delicious bread! I used to own a small bakery but It didn't last long. I long for to have a business like this and just eating their bread fulfills my passion. I'll be having an (h)erb slab and olive bread when I drop by again. Sandwich heaven!
PERFECTION ACHIEVED!!
Just GET OUT this bread is so good!
Pain.
Levain.
BUY IT.
MAKE A GRILLED CHEESE WITH IT.
THERE ARE NO WORDS.
you know what is evil? non-carb diets. EVIL. E-V-I-L. why? because carbs are just so damn GOOD. it's like eliminating GOODNESS from your life. and why on earth would one do that?
and on that note, you can get plenty of fresh baked GOODNESS at the acme bakery...a ton of variety, looks like it's fresh baked on the premises (from what I can tell anyway), and it's a great place to get the breads to go with the cheese you get next door and/or the meats&olives at boccalone!
[it's cash only though so you're going to need some dough to get...well...more (cooked) dough.]
my personal favorite is the sourdough twinkle...it's petite, it's cheap, it's sourdough, and it's fun to say!
One of the best smells in the world is that of freshly baked bread. It reminds me of home. Home reminds me of my childhood with sisters and brothers screaming and pulling hair and tattling and peeing the bed I'm supposed to sleep on...and homework.
The smell of bread makes me happy to be an adult.
At Acme, I have two favorites that keep me wandering here. The green onion slab and onion loaf are my favorites. Just put them in the oven to warm up for a few minutes and they are ready to be devoured.
The only other thing I've tried here is the sourdough round. I wasn't a big fan of it. I love sourdough, but this didn't make the cut for me.
Great service at the counter. I'm hoping to try more of Acme's products soon.
I can get Acme breads at my local overpriced grocery store (Lunardi's) and I know all about the Acme bakery in Berkeley. There was something different and magical about coming here at the Ferry Building. The guy that serviced us was great-full of humor and pride for the bread he sells. The bread is delicious, yes, but it was seeing all of the wonderful incarnations that made us all salivate.
My husband has decided we should go to the Ferry Building often just for Cowgirl and Acme. What a great duo!
*They do not slice their loaf bread*
I love acme bread. Anytime I go to a restaurant and eat all the bread on the table, I know exactly where they get their bread from.
I had no idea their location in the ferry building sold sandwiches til today and I just devoured the cheese sandwich for lunch: mt. tam triple créme cheese, fruit jam, arugula, and black pepper on a rustic baguette. Mmmmm...good.
This place is great. The sweet baguette is awesome! I need to try some of the other varieties.
If you took bread away from me, well I just wouldn't be able to live.
I'd die.
If I had a last meal it would be full of bread, cheese and sausages. Oh and some sushi and pizza and cheeseburgers.
For the bread portion of that meal please take me here.
Need I say more?
P.S. Sidenote- they only take cash - so hit the ATM on the way here.
Can't get enough of their Sourdough Cheese Rolls! They somehow manage to get the Gruyere cheese to bake evenly thoughout the bread. Amazing.
I like to cut the roll up into little squares then toast it. YUM!
AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS BREAD. I couldn't stop eating the epi. If you're at the Ferry Building, it is totally worth it to stop by Acme Bread Co. Just grab a roll/baguette and munch on it. It doesn't need anything to go with it!
I've been to Acme Bread many a time just to get the Epi bread. It's nicely sectioned into small pieces that you can just pull off and eat. I love that. But I've never been motivated to write a review for Acme....until now.
It wasn't until my last visit that I decided to try the sandwiches. They only have three options of sandwiches. I was craving salami so I ordered the salami one. They accidentally gave us the cheese one instead. When I went back to exchange it, they just told me to keep the cheese one too. I'm SO glad that this "mistake" occured. The salami sandwich was fine. Nothing super special about it. Just some salami on a baguette.
But the cheese sandwich was exquisite! I am not kidding. You just don't expect it to taste so good!. For $5.15, you get Mt. Tam Triple Creme Cheese, Fruit Jam, Arugula, Black Pepper served on a rustic baguette. All those flavors together create a real nice party in your mouth. It was ridiculously good.
Acme Bread Company is a life-saver, why? Because my girlfriend loves bread, and there's really no easier way to say "hey honey, I know this is not going to be make you happy, but I you need give me some personal space while I play some games or hang out with the guys, but as an way to compensate for my rudeness, here's a loaf of Acme olive bread!"
So there you have it, Acme Bread Company is the life-saver for me when I need to get out of tough situations. Perhaps it might just work for you too!
Warning: life-saver effect only works on individuals who love bread, may cause angry man or woman to throw bread at your face if they are not fans of bread.
The fancy-schmancy cheese sandwich is not to be missed. Various kinds of smooth cheese, some sort of jam, arugula, cracked pepper, something else I can't remember, all ready to go on a baguette. Mmm...mmm...inspirational.
My only complaint is that I really wanted another 1/2 sandwich to enjoy but for a little more than $5, it's definitely a worth the slightly less than full feeling.
LOVE their olive bread...crusty and full of delicious plump olive pieces. I haven't tried their other breads but it has to be good if all the surrounding restaurants use their breads. Note: Cash Only!
I don't know what they put in their ciabatta, but between an Acme loaf, some cave-aged gruyere, and a split of red, I'm set for lunch. Europe, eat your heart out!
My go to place for my morning baguette (I put nutella in it and grill it). They make the best baguette (in my opinion) in San Francisco, try their Rustic Sweet Baguette, Epi, or Rustic roll.
If you are lucky, you will get it fresh and still hot out of the oven...I eat it just plain with a cup of hot latte...nothing better in the world.
After stopping at Boccalone at the Ferry Building I needed bread so went here.
I noticed w/ my trained eyes that they had Day Old Bread. Well, if u also have trained eyes you know what to look for. It's Half Price so u should look out for them (tip: read my older reviews)

Best bakery in town, hands down. Great selection of European-style breads. Not much more I can say than get your bread here.
I love, love, love Acme Bread! I think they're my favorite breadmaker in the city, and Berkeley,...
My favorite is their walnut loaf, hot buttered, toasted and eaten with a creamy pasta. I had this combination ages ago at Nordstrom downtown's restaurant and I've been hooked ever since!
My office used to be right upstairs from Acme. Over a nine-week period I gained nine pounds. You get fat just from smelling the stuff, I swear.
I'm waiting for Blue Bottle Coffee to open & standing outside the Ferry Building, enjoying my Acme Apple Turnover.......fresh & warm out of the oven, flakes getting all over my face. I can't help but burst into poetry......
Ode to the Apple Turnover:
My dear Apple Turnover
You are so very sweet
Your flaky crust & cinnamon
Paired with apples, a bit of heat
Hot out of the oven
So buttery & freshly baked
Every morning, of your appley deliciousness
I would absolutely love to partake
Acme Apple Turnover, cooked with love and affection
Soft enough to melt but firm enough to crunch, you're true pastry perfection
I've enjoyed you many times & keep coming back to get
Thank you dearly my dear Acme, this was the very best one yet!

Acme is simply the best bread around. I love the pain epi! Sort of trying to not buy it as often as I do since it makes me not venture out to the other ones. If you work downtown or happen to be at the ferry building, you can ask them what will be coming out of the oven soon. I can't even begin to describe how good the pain epi is hot from the oven.
Aside from my obvious favorite epi, the herb slab is super good and so is the batard and the baguettes. I also really like the deli rolls and the torpedos for sandwiches. Another great treat is the sourdough wheel. Probably not the best thing for you on the menu considering that is is covered in what I think is parmesan cheese, but it is super good and a nice chance of pace for breakfast.
Do yourself a favor, go to Acme, ask them what will be hot soon and hang out an wait for some of the best bread around straight from the oven.
I am all about bread. I love bread! The smell. The sound of the crust. The feel of the crumbs. The taste. Everything.
And I love Acme bread. Their sourdough has to be one of my favorites ever *second to Boudins*.
I recently came here on a Friday afternoon, hungry for something. Thinking I'd orger a croissont and leave, I decided to ponder the selection. I already knew that Acme bread was the shit....I've sampled it at Hog Island and at the Wine Merchant. So instead of buying a croissont, I decieded on a soursough baguette. And a great choice! Coupled with a salami cone from Boccalone and their sparkling water, I had a nice picnic lunch to enjoy al fresco!
Mmmm....bread......
Of course, the only drawback to buying the baguette? I ended up assaulting many a people while wandering around the Ferry building the rest of the day. Notably at Sur la Table where, my baguette, decided it hated everyone around me and whacked everyone in sight. My bad.....
Some of the best bread I have ever tasted in my life! This is definitely going on my "must stop-by and get something" list whenever I come to the Ferry Building. One of every type of bread, slab, and roll they offer are arranged and labeled all around the cash registers so you can clearly see what you are getting.
The line seemed long when we got there but moved SO quickly that I almost didn't have enough time to decide what I wanted! There were so many options that I just opted for the whole wheat raisin rolls to eat as a mid-afternoon snack. O.M.G was what I thought when I had a bite of it. I am a fan of raisins and they were surprisingly plentiful in that little roll. The bread was crunchy on the outside, moist and full of flavor on the inside with nice hints of salty and sweet...*drool* Exactly how fresh baked bread should be!
I really want to try their cranberry walnut bread, baguettes, croissants, and olive rolls next time I am in the area. Oh, can't forget their sandwiches too...I'm looking forward to my next trip already!
Cash only but don't fret because their prices are very reasonable. Under $2.50 for 2 whole wheat raisin rolls...woo hoo!
I am a self-professed carbovoire.
I love all things carby, especially bread and baked goods.
For Acme, I am willing to travel across town.
My favorites:
Herb Slab & Onion Slab.
They are oh so good alone, or used as sandwich bread.
"Woohoo! As good as [bread] gets!"
I love Acme bread! It is delicious and made with organic, simple ingredients. Their sourdough baguette is the best and is far better than any grocery store made bread. The baguette is good eaten by itself, used for sandwiches or sliced up for dips & appetizers!
The cranberry walnut bread is yummy as well, it's loaded with plump cranberries along with the crunch of walnuts! Makes a nice breakfast bread, is good with brie & cream cheese and isn't sickeningly sweet. Also love their herb and grain breads as well.
There was a tempting array of pastries too!
They have 4 locations around the bay and I've also bought their breads at Whole Foods. Definately a fan!
I have walked by Acme Bread many times but never stopped by to actually buy anything (the lines were so long every time I'm there!). Recently I actually got a chance to buy something from the counter because the lines were not that bad.
I bought the green onion slab and it was soooo good! It also wasn't greasy or overly salty either. The bread is definitely yummy and reasonably priced as well. I paid $3.30 for a whole slab. Will definitely come back to check out their other baked goods.
This is carb heaven!!!
If you love bread, this is definitely the place to go. They have bread for everything...breakfast, lunch and dinner( http://static.px.yelp.... ). You can grab a ham and cheese turnover for breakfast, pick up some croutons for your salad, or grab some of their hamburger buns.
My friend picked up an olive loaf and rosemary potato bread. I didn't think I could finish a whole loaf by myself, so I just grabbed a sourdough cheese wheel. I tasted a small piece of my cheese wheel, and it was sooooo good. I can't wait to eat the rest of it!
Now I know where to get lots of yummy bread! I'll be back for more!
The bread lover's heaven! HUGE selection of breads and with Cowgirl Creamery right next door and wine store a few steps away, it makes the ferry building the perfect one stop shop for a relaxing night with cheese, bread, and wine!
I LOVE carbs - noodles, rice, bread, pasta - you name it! It took me forever to decide which breads I wanted to try this time. I opted for the olive bread (delicious although a bit salty) and the green onion bread (good texture, light subtle taste). Service is friendly. Cash only!
The best bread and the best prices in the city. Why go to whole foods and pay double when you can get the same excellent product straight from the source.
Everything is excellent! I am am a fan of the Green Onion Slab and the traditional baguettes. The chocolate croissants are also great. You really can't lose here.
Make sure to have cash because they don't take plastic.
I wish Acme would just bake me a gigantic loaf or roll just so I could sleep on it, eat a little bit and then die on it. That would be sweet. This is my highlight of going to the Ferry Building. Doesn't matter which bread you pick, it's great. I love the Olive Roll and the worker recommended the Torpedo Roll. I wish I could come here everyday and just make a new sandwich with a different bread every day.
"How can bread be that good?" What a question when discussing Acme. There are really no words to explain the bread. It's just amazing, soft and flavorful. I've always loved bread and this place makes me go above and beyond the unthinkable.
My mouth waters and tummy rumbles when I think of the fresh baked breads that come from this place. I'm a sucker for fresh bread with cheese, I could live off of that only for the rest of my life and be in heaven.
Only downside? Cash only, so stop off at an ATM before you come here.
the best bread in SF! acme bread company bakes a large variety of fresh baked breads. they have a sample all the breads laid out on the front counter. check it out!
i go for the rustic baguette and the sour dough round. bring cash! it's cash only...and be prepared for a short line.
Writing this makes me droooool. Only downside to this place is its cash only.. but damn I'll be lookin at the bottom of my purse to look for any cash I may have.. because this bread is to die for!
Seriously, who carries cash. Lol... but my itty bitty coin purse has at least 2 bucks in it for some wonderful breaddddd.
The bread here is pretty top notch, one of the best bread places I have been in the SF bay area. The variety of bread that they have to serve your carb-guilty desires is bountiful. This place and its neighbors makes the Ferry Building a place for me to swing by whenever I am in need of food and in the neighborhood. Recently I gota Rustica loaf here, some cheese at the cheese shop nearby, a great evening with some great wine tossed in.
My only suggestion would be if they had a board of what breads they have available because of the wide selection that Acme has, and on more than one occasion when I was pysched to get one kind chosen they were out.
There is something about the minimalist Parisian sandwich -- saucisson sec, butter, maybe cornichons for contrast, on a chewy crusty baguette -- that is soul satisfying. There are no bells and whistles here. No avocado-mango salsa. No curried shrimp coleslaw. No piled-high mounds of roast beef. There are no powerhouse flavors to bowl you over or extraneous fillings (iceberg lettuce, I'm looking at you) to stretch out bland flavors to fill a stomach. A perfectly-executed Parisian sandiwch (Salame, here) is the elegant pinnacle of sandwichery.
And here, we have that near-perfect sandwich. Salami is as good as I've tasted, cut slightly thicker than I'm used to, but with an amazing melting mouth-feel that is never unctuous. Enough cornichon to brighten the flavor without overpowering the meat. Butter bringing the entire enterprise together, and, of course, supreme bread.
If I have any criticism, it's that the sandwich was maybe a little small for the price, but perhaps that is more to blame on my appetite having been artificially inflated by larger-than-my-head deli subs than any fault of the sandwich here itself. My co-luncher got the green garlic sandwich, which was great in its own way, but I'll stick with the simplicity and grace of this three-note harmony every time. Exit the Ferry Building, play the flâneur by the water, and pretend you can hear an accordianist in the distance, and you will have no regrets.
Arguably the best of the bay area's bread places. Try their daily bread special, which always great and on a rotating weekly schedule, pretty much any of their rolls esp rosemary, olive and pumpkin, and any of their sandwiches. I'm not as fond of some of their raisin rolls but that's not their fault.
Don't be afraid of a long line. The line moves quickly and it's cash only.
Bottom line: Really, if they make it you will probably like it. They are bread artists! Pair with some cheese from Cowgirl next door and you're ready for a classic Parisian sandwich that is simple, delicate, delicious and will totally knock your socks off!
