Amazing! Small, family-run restaurant, very clean and always very friendly! I've always get the Jerk chicken and never the oxtail because it's more expensive but I promise to order it soon. The serve it to you and it comes not just with the deliciously-spiced, fall-off-the-bone chicken but boiled vegetables, sweet rice, plaintains and bread. They also have homemade Jamaican drinks which go perfectly with the meal and are tasty just by themselves.

I absolutely love coming here, it's very relaxing, pretty quiet, and again they are so nice and the food is delicious.

Ever since Coley's went down the toilet (long, long ago), it hasn't gotten any better for me than Ackee Bamboo. A cute little hole-in-the-wall restaurant tucked away in Leimert Park, this place is a gem. I haven't had a chance to try every item on the menu, but what I have tried, I haven't been disappointed with.

Curry chicken - the bizness. Juicy chicken drowning in a delicious Jamaican curry.

Brown Stew chicken - off the chain. It's been a while since I've tried this but my taste buds, they remember.

Curry goat - soft, fatty pieces of meat that also have no chance of survival.

Jerk chicken - jerked up. Spicy for real.

BBQ ribs - OMG. Who the #*$& knew that there was such a thing as Jamaican BBQ? Or a Jamaican BBQ sauce?!?! But they did the damn thing. The meat? Sliding off the bone. The sauce? Soooo rich. Mind you: I haven't had this plate since 2009, and it's STILL on my mind.

BBQ chicken - no different than the ribs. And the fact that the quality remains in tact, brings a tear to my eye. This is my staple plate. So. Damn. GOOD!

Chicken, beef, veggie patties - flaky crust, stuffed with spiced ground chicken, beef, or greens (Spinach?) with corn. I've had some soggy, greasy, limp noodle patties that got me thinking they were yesterday's leftovers, but never here. They're beautiful.

Each plate is served with well-seasoned veggies, a heaping portion of rice, 2-3 plantains, festival bread, and tons of sauce to keep the meat dressed. They don't skimp up in here: I can never finish a plate, and when I'm nice enough to let someone share with me, neither of us winds up hungry.

The restaurant itself is pretty small, but there is ample seating between this place and it's sister cafe located right across the pathway. Paid parking is available (don't get me started on those janky parking meters that now accept credit cards O_o). I'd love to come and try the Sunday buffet.

NOTE: They used to be closed on Wednesdays, but now they'll be closed on Mondays. Oh, and though I always try to call my order in, I always end up waiting the same amount of time that I would've had I not called over the phone. So I'm of the mindset that they take your order over the phone, hang up, laugh, and fill the order in person. Fair enough. So I don't bother with phone orders anymore.

I used 2 come to this place for lunch maybe 2 years back. The food was good, the patties were decent. Nowadays, I dunno WHAT'S going on. I went a couple weeks ago and the curry chicken was extremely salty and super dark green. It was as if the cook tried 2 doctor up the curry and make it "different" but it went terribly wrong. If I wasn't so hungry and cranky I would've taken it back. I had the jerk chicken one time and it was aaaaaall spice. No flavor, no umph. Just caked-on, black, thick spice. I wouldn't dare try it again.

This place gets 3 stars because it's a hit and miss. It's not bad enough to deserve 2 stars but it's not solid and consistent enough to deserve 4 stars either.

Was so juiced to finally eat here, my sis lives walking distance from this place and she RAVES about it. I may have caught them on an off day. My fish was SUPER hard as if it were warmed up a FEW times in the microwave. Man behind register kept forgeting to bring us our drinks. BUT he was nice enought to let me charge my fone while we ate (with HIS charger) lol. I dont know if I would return though :(

Trying to find something other than the fast food places in Leimert Park.  This was the closest place where I was located at the time, and based on fellow YELPers figured I would give it try.

I am a huge oxtail fan, so that was a must.  I was a bit ambivalent, the flavor was good, and very tender, but the oxtail was cool(maybe a microwave?).  Anyway definitely had much better, but the veggies sides and peas / rice were excellent and portion size was good.

My lunch date had the chicken bowl, was a drumstick in brown sauce over beans and rice.  Huge portion, good flavor, but drumstick was a bit small.

The veggie patties were just coming out of the oven, and looked fantastic, but way too much food at the time.

Overall, prices were good, portion size excellent, but will have to come back to get a better feel.

    It's Jamaican food for everyone.

If you get one entree, how can you pass up the ackee and salt fish.  I recommend the brown stew chicken marinated in Jamaican herbs and spices.  I have a friend who likes the veggie patty, but how can I suggest anything other than the beef patty.  The jerk chicken is overpriced for the quality.  Go elsewhere for that.

It is not a real 4 star place because the prices are too high for the food, but it is above 3 stars.  I give it 3.5.  The worst part of this place is being closed on Wednesday.

This was the first place I ever tried in my search for good Jamaican fare.  A Jamaican native was my guide.  I haven't tried any other place since.

I had heard stories of Ackee and Saltfish, but didn't understand the appeal (admit it, it's not an appetizing name for those who do not know).  The instant that the ackee passed my lips, I was hooked.  It's not cheap, but it is well worth the money, and served in a portion large enough to feed two....maybe three.

The jerk chicken changed my life, and the ox-tail....it makes me unconfortable to think so fondly of the back end of an ox.

There are restaurants out there that hold back on the spice to cater to those with a sensitive palate, and there are those that go all out for the wow factor (I'll get you back for that, Orochan Ramen).  Then there are the restaurants that think less of the sensitive palate, don't care about the wow factor, and make food the way they think it should taste.

If I ever make it to Jamaica, I hope the food is as good as Ackee Bamboo.

    P.S. TING...it's a soda....drink it.

    ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING FOOD!!!!

Stopped by on the way to my hair appointment and I must say, this is some of the most tastiest food I have ever eaten.  If you ever in the area, I would try the ox tails, the jerk chicken, and the curry chicken.

The Culaloo and the bread was good.  Also surprised to discover that the patties (veggie, chicken and beef) are all made in house.  So good, I have made the trip from West Hollywood over to Leimert Park these last three days in a row just for Ackee. (Big Smile)

    Really impressive little fare.

How does this place gets 4 stars I'll never know. I've been a few times and the food is always old. Don't ever get a patty, it will either be hard or the meat inside looks like it's from the day before. The last time i went i waited patiently for 10 minutes and then they took someone's order that came in after me while I was talking to them. Not to mention the food was wack. I didnt even complain they just won't be getting my business again.

In the 5 years I've lived in this neighborhood, I never tried this place... until now. Very nice place to grab a bite of Jamaican cuisine a friend of mine in the neighborhood introduced me to them. The price is nice and the serving size is AWESOME! I didn't have any room to try their desserts but I will next time I come. The shrimp was good, the rice was nice, the veggies were fabulous. I tried their patty and I gotta say, while they were good, the ones from Simply Wholesome are still better.
Nevertheless, Ackee has all the authentic drinks from the island which was great. Nothing like a grapefruit soda!

I recommend, and this is now a new place on my lunch radar. :-)

Luv, luv, luv this place!! One of my fav spots to eat at in LA. The food is fresh and awesome. The restaurant is clean and they take pride in what they are doing. It is family owned, so sometimes they may have the teenage daughters working the counter. I haven't had a bad meal here yet. My fav meal is the curry chicken. So good. Meals come with rice and peas, cabbage, plantains, and festival (which is a fried dumpling). They also have Jamaicans sodas as well. For the person who said they rice and peas were dry, ask for some curry gravy on top of your rice and peas next time. You will be happy you did. :)

This is a must try for those of you thinking about checking it out. They stay open till I think 9pm, but realize the if you get there late, they may be out of certain items.

Ackee Bamboo is a small, cute, cozy spot with a medium-size menu that has a good collection of Caribbean favs.

For the vegetarians, they have a few different options that include a veg plate or a veg/callaloo plate.  Although I wasn't that happy with the food the first time I went (which was about a month after they opened), I think their preparation has only gotten better, and their veggies are pretty damned tasty nowadays.

Warning:  Sometimes you can wait a while for your food, and since they're a 'round the way joint, sometimes they run out of things!  but that's okay.  better fresh and out then frozen and old.  right?

But this "inconvenience" is only reason they have 4 stars...

MadProfessah's long nightmare is now over. My ongoing quest for good Caribbean food in Los Angeles has been completed. I have finally discovered Ackee Bamboo restaurant in Leimert Park. Aparently it's been around for over a year beause I saw a commendation signed by former Inglewood City Councilman (now Assemblymember) Curren Price dated November 2005 praising the restaurant's commitment to the Best of Jamaican cuisine.

Last week, I went to 4305 Degnan Boulevard (at the corner of 43rd Street) and ordered the Special of the Day (barbecue ribs) as well as the brown stew chicken for takeout. Both meals came with fried plaintains, rice and peas, steamed vegetables and johnny cake. The portions were quite generous. The ambience is very simple, with medium-sized photographs of indigenous Caribbean fruits and flowers dotting the walls above cheap but functional furniture.
You come here for the food,m and it does not disappoint.

Both meals were delicious, but particularly the brown stew chicken is something I intend to make a regular habit of ordering. It is moist, tender and spicy without being overly hot. The plaintains were not overly sweet and contrasted nicely with brown stew. The peas and rice were pleasantly starchy as I remember from home-cooked meals. I even ate the steamed vegetables and (what appears to be suspiciously deep fried dough) johnny cake. I found the sauce of the barbecue ribs a bit too sweet, but the meat absolutely fell off the bone, which Leenah enjoyed immensely.

If you are in the Leimert Park area (and even if you aren't, it's worth a special trip during an off-peak traffic hour) to check out the food at Ackee Bamboo.

    OVERALL GRADE: A-/B+.

    FOOD: A.
    AMBIANCE: B-.
    SERVICE: B+.
    VALUE: A.

I like this place. Me and my girl Tanya stopped here after a hike at Griffith Park, we were starved.

Usually when I come I like to sit on the patio, and every time very interesting people come up to talk. On this visit it happened to be a couple members of the Wu-tang clan who were feeling chatty. No, not any of the original 9 members, but some new, young rappers who were visiting LA and trying to holla--I forgot their names :( Nice dudes with New York accents, but I think they were really disappointed that we werent impressed by them---sorry, it's LA, rappers and actors are a dime a dozen :(

    Okay, back to the food:

I ordered the jerk chicken, rice and peas, plaintains and cabbage. All was delicious! The jerk wasn't too spicy and was tender just how I like it. We ordered a chicken patty and shared it. The young man on the register kinda didn't know what he was doing, and he got our orders confused a few times (we had to keep reminding him) and he forgot our drinks. I chalked it up to his inexperience, and since it is a mom and pop spot (he was a family member helping out), I let it go. At least he had a pleasant attitude.

Everything tasted great and tasted freshly made, owing to the fact that they had just opened for the day.

I will be returning because the food is consistently good, I live nearby, and I love Leimert Park.

I had to look up "ackee" on wikipedia.  It's a fruit related to lychee.  Let me tell you that it doesn't taste or have the consistency of a fruit.  The previous reviewer comparing it to gnocchi is a little more accurate...it's just a lot softer than gnocchi.

This is a very nice bright, clean little place.  I met my buddy and his daughter there.  He tells me some lady leaving the place suggested the ackee saltfish dish.  Looking at the dinner menu, I wanted to try a few different things and couldn't decide.  The ackee saltfish is $15 I told myself.  But the lady said it was good.  I hate when I can't decide.

My friend got the jerk chicken and I went ahead and got the ackee saltfish.  They must've been short in the kitchen, because it kinda took a while.  I didn't sweat it, because we weren't in a hurry.  The nice, young gal who took our order was really cool.  She brought us these empanada looking things and said "sorry for the wait, guys...one of these is spicy vegetable and the other is spicy chicken".  I replied, "No problem at all...thank you!"  They were good.  We also ordered the pineapple ginger juice.  That fresh ginger had a bite to it, but it went real good with the pineapple.  We were imagining how good it would be with gin or vodka.

Anyway, when the food came, I was surprised at the amount of food that was on the plate.  Now, I think I eat quite a bit, especially when it's good.  But that ackee & saltfish meal is really two meals.  It comes with rice/beans, plantains, and steamed cabbage.  I really liked that dish...it was very tasty.  The saltfish is salted cod like they use in Portuguese cuisine.  My friend's jerk chicken was good too.  They bake their jerk chicken as most other places grill or BBQ it.

They have daily dinner specials for $8.  I will be going back to try some other dishes.

I really don't know caribbean food well to give it 5 stars and say its as good as it gets but this place was very good and i will return to deal with these Jamaican food cravings i've been having lately.

I ordered 2 veggie patties and the brown stew chicken dinner.  I didnt even dent the plate it was so much food. I had eaten the veggie patty by the time I got home. It was very good, well seasoned (think its spinach not sure) but it was very very good and outside was crisp.

The brown stew chicken just gave me life. lol it was soooo good. It was falling off the bone, juicy  and well seasoned with whatever that brown stew sauce that was all over the chicken and that poured over the rice and beans.  I really like this for two reasons.  For one, everytime I go to a caribbean restaurant the rice and peas are good but very dry so I liked the sauce all over it.  Second, this is the first time I have had caribbean food where the rice and peas had full beans not those little pieces that I have usually seen so I really enjoyed that also.

The restaurant is nice, small and quaitn, a nice little sofa and candles on the tables.  There was a young teenage girl helping me she was very friendly.  This actually seems like a nice place to have a nice little lunch. Overall, I think I found a spot for my Jamaican cravings

I'm sorry, but a copious amount of food does not a great rating make.  The prices seemed a bit high for what they were serving.  This was meant to be a Jamaican restaurant.  It is similar to the various Cuban restaurants in town.  To that extent, it's the flavors that will keep you coming back for more.  Here, I didn't quite get the flavor that I was looking for.  I ordered BBQ chicken (i know, who orders BBQ chicken at a Jamaican restaurant?).  There was so much BBQ sauce that it drowned out everything else on the plate.  The fried plantains were not all that great.  The rice and beans were good.  I did share the plate, because there was so many carbs on the plate, I didn't want it going right to my gut.  Next time, I'll order the Jerk chicken or the curry chicken to see if their Jamaican flare is fair.  However, on this visit, I wasn't that impressed.

Fantastic.  Great Jamaican food and the nicest decor of any Jamaican restaurant I've been to outside of Manhattan.  Also, there's always good reggae music playing to get you in the right state of mind before devouring some Jerk chicken, curry goat, or oxtails.

The specials of the day are very reasonably priced and the portions are generous.  The staff is Jamaican, so this isn't an Americanized take on Jamaican food.  Service is cool and food comes out quickly.

I eat here every weekend and if you are thinking Jamaican, this is your best bet in the metro area.

I know this is a well loved restaurant and probably a cornerstone of the community for food and socializing. And I am not that well versed on Caribbean food, having only eaten it a few times. So please keep that in mind after reading my review.

    Decor/Ambiance = 3.9 stars
    Service = 4.3 stars
    Food = 3 stars
    Authenticity = 4.5

So you see, everything rounds up to a nice 4 stars. The better points of the place is how homey, clean, and quaint the restaurant is. There are a few tables inside, but I loved the courtyard outside with the rosebushes and the patio tables. It just had a really comfortable atmosphere where you could enjoy your food.

The service was also very good. We had a very attentive (and cute) server who made up his bit of scattiness with an eagerness to rectify some minor mistakes. LOVED him. The person at the register was a little slow, but was very patient with us in figuring out what we wanted to get.

The food was...a little less than I was expecting. My brother says jerk is different at every restaurant he goes to, but I was expecting my jerk chicken to be a little more glazed, spicier, and sweeter. It was a little more watery than I anticipated, and while it was definitely a well cooked chicken, the flavor wasn't as potent as I'd thought it'd be.

That said, the plantain was out of this world amazing. I could have eaten just a plate of that with the fry bread all day! Maybe if I were to go back, that's exactly what I'd do. The beans and rice were also very good, although I could have done without the stewed cabbage. (There wasn't anything *wrong* with the way they prepared it, it's just...I've never liked plain stewed cabbage).

I also think something should be said about the authenticity of the place, since I saw a whole table of people that were from somewhere in the Caribbean. I thought if they were eating here, that says a lot of good.

As part of the Trekking Los Angeles (http://trekkinglosange...) tour, these folks brought out trays of food for us to try.  The baked jerk chicken was amazing!  It's nicely marinated and comes out real spicy.  The rice helped put out the fire.  The vegetable patty was unusual.  It's a golden yellow colored turnover filled with some leafy green vegetable and corn.  They also offer a beef or chicken version.  I also had some deep fried bread.  It was very dense, with specks of corn.  The flavor was milder than I would have guessed, but I still liked it.

With only ten tables, this family-owned establishment is quite small.  But the prices are very reasonable and the food is worth checking out.

I hurt myself yesterday.  Oh man, the festivals there are as good as the ones I had in Jamaica. We lucked up and they were out of them so they made a fresh batch and they were hot and yum-my!

I'm officially a fan of any brown stew dish they make, I had the chicken yesterday and it was flavorful and plentiful. Get thee to Leimert Park.

Alright. For those of you not familiar with Jamaican cuisine, you've found the RIGHT spot!

First of all, Ackee is the meat of a flower. Originally from somewhere in the continent of Africa. The meat of this flower is very delicious. Same texture/consistency as tofu, but with a much different flavor. It's more on the savory side, but not too pungent at ALL! Ackee & saltfish (a dried cod),is a traditional breakfast in JA. It's usually served with boiled flour dumplings, but for some reason, they serve it with festival dumplings here (almost like hush puppies). It's a wonderful combo, and I LOVE it! Not too fishy, and full of great flavor!  It's not a dish for everyone, but I'd have to say, it's one of my favorites!

Jamaican food is very eclectic in it's traditions. Jamaica is NOt a homogeneous country. It's a unique blend of African, Chinese, Indian, Syrian, Caucasian, and Native bloods. The food also reflects this! Jamaican food is a unique blend of different spices, and it the eastern/western influence is a tongue tantalizing experience. You will probably not like it, if you don't like savory/spicy foods.

The meat pies here are pretty good, in comparison to other places. I have had a lot better though back on the East Coast. Not bad, and definitely worth a try though.

The place itself is very small, and has more of a Mom & Pop shop feel,  but true food connousieurs know, these places are the only ones for GREAT food!  Something looses it's luster, when the kitchen has to prepare meals non-stop all night!

Had the Tuesday special of Curry Chicken.   Awesome.  Perfect amount of spice with meat falling off the bone. Rice and beans, cabbage, roll, and plantains.  Yummy!

The friendly staff and bright, clean space make this casual, inexpensive Leimert Park hangout a great spot for some serious Jamaican food.  The meat pies and Ginger Beer (non-alcoholic) are a satisfying afternoon snack.  The daily specials - I lucked out with BBQ ribs last thursday - are a full meal with rice, plantains and a hush puppy.  I didn't need to eat again the rest of the day!  A great precursor to a night of music at nearby World Stage, Babe & Ricky's or KAOS.

Being a native Jamaican I can say that California is seriously limited in the authentic Jamaican cuisine department. This place is pretty much the only Jamaican food (outside of my Mom's) that is REAL. I frequent it and our families know each other. Remember that real Jamaican food is cooked with the Scotch Bonnet pepper (google it) so ask for mild if your taste buds shy away from true Caribbean spice! If it is your first time try pattie (beef, chicken or veggie) and a Ting soda pop. More adventurous patrons should try the whole steamed fish - divine.......

I first learned of Ackee Bamboo from other Yelp! reviews. They all said this place was really good. No one actually said anything negative. I decided to give it a try.
When I arrived on a Saturday afternoon the place was quiet. It was a little small but, very clean and well-kept. I decided on the Brown Stew Chicken( served with rice, plantains, cabbage and a hushpuppy).
When the waitress brought my food out, I was impressed by how plentiful it was.The menu (modestly) said "small" pieces of chicken. In actuality they were quite ample portions. The flavor was reminiscent of a very delicate barbeque. Precise, with a careful, homemade taste. The rice was simply okay. The cabbage was good.  The plan-tains were okay(I'm not a good judge of them). And the hushpuppy was the best I've ever tasted. Overall, the food was piping hot and  very, very fresh. No reheated leftover tastes.
I will definitely be returning in the future and would recommend this establishment to all!

Jamaican food at its best! "Ackee" is apparently some kind of starch, almost like gnocchi. Their Jerk Chicken is the best I've ever had, and their Oxtail soup is wonderful.

Went for lunch... For about $7, I got a large portion of jerk chicken, cabbage (surprisingly good), rice, and that "donut thing" Jamaica is known for mmmm...  The food is spicy which is the way I like it.  The chicken was awesome - great flavor and very tender.  Got to love the value to taste ratio on this place - very nice!  Will definitely go again.

so I went there last nite. If you are looking for a place that has customer service DO NOT GO HERE!!!!
When we were ordering I asked the waiter "HOW ARE THE OXTAILS" he told me they were delicious, he did not offer me a sample... I said ok lets go for it. I got them and they were disgusting. I love oxtails my mother is West Indian so I do know caribbean cuisine. So I asked if I could have the ribs instead, my friend had them and they were great.
So once were done eating we go to pay and im being charged for the Oxtails, its like a $5.00 difference in the total. So I say I had the ribs and that what im paying for. We got into a full on blowout in the middle of the restaurant. The female owner preceeded to tell me that I should have asked for a sample. ???? Who goes into a restaurant and asks for a sample????? If I would have been offered a sample I would have took it. So while I loved the ribs I will never go back to this place. The customer is always right...even when they are wrong. I worked as a server in undergrad and this was unacceptable. I understand them being a mom and pop place, and I love to support small businesses but customers should be treated with more respect, and if samples are available it should be disclosed before the ordering of a meal. TRY IT AT YOUR OWN RISK

LOVE this place. This is the best excuse for getting over to Leimert Park! Friendly and helpful owners, small and quaint establishment. Be prepared to wait if  eating in for the fresh prepared food. If you are in a hurry, call ahead for take out. One thing that you MUST TRY is the brown stewed tilapia. OMG, delish. I have never had anything like it. So flavorful and moist with your rice and peas, callilou, plantains, and bread. Don't forget a ginger beer on the side. It all goes down so nicely together. YUM, I am salivating just typing this...
