I've been to ACKC over a dozen times and absolutely love this place. Only reason I'm not giving it a full 5 stars is because their bite size chocolates are so expensive. Actually, their chocolates are more like "nimble size."  I've tried the Charo, Marilyn Monroe, Eartha Kitt, and Bette Davis.  Eartha Kitt is my fav. I've tried them as milkshakes and hot drinks. I prefer them as milkshakes. A few times we've tried to get wine, but weren't able to get any. Very bizarre. The atmosphere is very eclectic and laid back. I went once during a wine & chocolate pairing event. That was cool, but it was so packed. We don't come here regularly because of the price. Once every 3-4 weeks is a treat for us.  Overall, I recommend this place.

    THIS IS CLOSED NOW!

I tried visiting last week to get some of their hot chocolate and macarons and their windows were blocked out with a sign saying that the location had shut down, but their locations in Alexandria were still open.

This is a great place to perch with your laptop. It's also perfect for meeting up with a small party of folks, without a rowdy backdrop.

As reiterated in countless reviews, the hot chocolates will make your toes curl just a tad, but don't sleep on the chai. It can hold it's own as well.

The space is cozy, unique and welcoming with free wifi, couches, small tables, high top tables and a few other nooks and crannies to settle into.

Plus, the bathroom manages to always smells breezy. I don't know how they do it.

(And I do not challenge you to challenge that.)

I am totally down with the concept of this place. I am a chocolate lover, so a chocolate bar is always something I am up for trying. I like the set up and the little tables, that lend itself for coming on  date or just by yourself. I guess that depending on the time of the day you come, you will have different experience with the crowd/noise level here. My experience was on the loud/crowded side.

I came on a Saturday night, after having dinner in Dupont.  I sat at the bar, since it was my first time and I wanted to be able to ask questions. The staff was friendly and very helpful. It was close to 9pm and I was not expecting to see much of a crowd, and there was not that many people at the time of my arrival. But it all changed in the space of 15 minutes. People kept coming in and all of a sudden I was surrounded by a crowd waiting to put their order, right at the bar. That took away from the experience, since having someone watching my every move and hearing every bit of my conversation is not exactly what I had in mind. People can sometimes forget to respect other patron's personal space.

I decided to try their pumpkin spice hot chocolate, since apparently this is one of the favorites. I have a sweet tooth, but this was beyond what I can take in the sweet department. I couldn't finish it. I knew that their drinks are a little over the top, but I was expecting something different. It just tasted like an overload of sugar that distracted from the pumpkin and chocolate flavors. It felt like they were trying too darn hard.

Like I said, is hard for me to say no to chocolate and I do want to LOVE this place. So, I guess a second try is in order. But maybe next time I will try their chocolates, cakes, and pastries and maybe pair them with some wine instead.

Hands-Down some of the best hot chocolate around.  Tons of flavors and I've never had a bad one!

They also have Carla Hall's (of Top Chef and The Chew) cookies here - look for the bags from Alchemy Catering. So delicious!

Venu N. is so right: the tables -- while unique and beautifully painted with lotus blossoms or Audrey Hepburn's likeness -- are super wobbly here.  For some reason husband and I seem to be wobbly table magnets, but this one was one of the worst.  A mere elbow lean had the whole thing teetering precariously, threatening to dump our champagne in our laps.

Speaking of champagne, we were here for Top Chef Carla Hall's ACKC cookie launch (thanks to the fab Dana Z.).  The champagne flowed freely, the cookie samples came sporadically, and Carla herself circulated the small, pop-art space, dazzling guests with her grace and charm.  Apparently one of ACKC's co-owners, Rob Kingsbury, approached Carla at this year's Taste of Del Ray with the proposition that she sell her cookies in their stores, et voilà: a few months later she's launching her cookie line, available at all ACKC outlets and select area Whole Foods.  Genius, Rob Kingsbury.  I wholeheartedly endorse these bite-sized morsels of deliciousness, particularly the Pecan Shortbread with Vanilla Salt and the spicy, savory Cheddar Pecan.

As for ACKC's Washington store, it's cute.  Small and vibrant, decorated with co-owner Eric Nelson's mosaics and mirrored acrylics.  It's a pleasing, Warhol-esque combination of still-life and 1950s Hollywood starlets.  Once the space filled up with people, tho, it grew almost unbearably hot inside, and husband and I couldn't resist ordering a Milkshake Diva -- the Doris Day -- a chocolatey shake with chocolate bits and mini marshmallows (bonus: the shakes can be ordered with skim milk to alleviate the guilt and taste as sinful as if they were made with whole).  This shake was thick, creamy, and flavorful, but at $5.75 not something I'd indulge in often.

ACKC is a fun little spot.  Who can argue with chocolate?

ACKC is pretty fabulous, even so much I'm tempted to give it 5 stars... maybe after a few more visits. Plus there is one in Alexandria that I want to check out...

First off the look of the place is very cute.  They have hand painted cafe tables.  I loved the Audrey Hepburn and Lucielle Ball ones.  There are also paintings for sale hanging on the walls.

The names of the drinks are fun!  The Liz Taylor (chocolate with lavendar and pistachio whipped cream), the Judy Garland (chocolate hazelnut with rainbow sprinkles) or the one I tried, the Doris Day (chocolate with marshmallows)  You can have the option of making the milk shakes with skim milk which i LOVE.

They were proud of just winning the award for "DC's Best Small Business" and they also have best hot chocolate in the COUNTRY awarded by Travel & Leisure, which definitely makes me want to return once it gets colder....  But one thing is for sure - whether it is hot or cold outside, ACKC is a good place to go.

I love this little chocolate bar in the Logan Circle area. I stopped in one night for dessert and ended up purchasing a box of chocolates due to how different the flavors sounded - lavender and pistachio, tiramisu, salted chocolate with espresso! I savored all of them and can't wait to purchase some as Christmas gifts later this year.

The milkshakes are tasty and all the cakes look amazing.

Plus, it has such a cool vibe inside. This is one place to check out if you're looking for some delicious desserts. There is also a coffee and wine bar.

I went in for a "to go" brownie.  My plan was to smuggle it into the Studio Theater and eat it during "Pop".  Little did I know I was walking straight into a drag show.  And I'm talking at ACKC, not at the Warhol show next door!

Literally, there was a guy in drag on "stage" doing his act when I walked into this little cafe.  Every table was filled and even the standing room area.  Did I let that stop me from acquiring my brownie?  Hell no!

What's a little claustrophobia when a girl is  hungry and needs a chocolate fix?  End of story the brownie was delicious and the atmosphere at ACKC was more entertaining than the play next door I came to watch.

The owners and staff are delicious too!  Super nice!

(Caveat: I actually went here once long ago, I think it was in their first month of opening.  No problem getting a table then.  Glad I finally made it back.  I can see a few hundred/thousand other people have discovered the area/ place and I'm glad to see it is successful, even if it means I can't find a place to park my car anymore.)

I have been to ACKC three times now - once in summer, twice in Fall, and I think they have some of the best milkshakes in DC (other than Ted's Bulletin, which I think takes top honors in that category).

I have sampled the chocolate at ACKC, since they are usually handing out free samples, and it is always delicious as well.

The milkshakes are all named after divas - I have tried the Doris Day (which I found ok but didn't knock my socks off), then the last two times I had the Grace Kelly, made with chocolate ice cream, caramel and a touch of sea salt. It is (not to be too campy here) DIVINE.

The service here can best be described as "earnest yet misguided" - the people behind the counter are nice, but efficiency is not a strong suit. The last time I was in there instead of a Grace Kelly milkshake they made me a Grace Kelly Hot Chocolate, but were very cheerful about correcting the order, and apologetic as well.

Cute space as well - also free wifi, so you get the normal contingent of hipsters sitting around working on their next masterpiece ;-)

Came back for their "Champagne Brunch" on Sunday (I didn't order anything that included champagne, but apparently that's what they call it even when you don't get mimosas) with a Deals for Deeds voucher for $30 worth of food.

Good things:  Their lavender chocolate french toast with a side of sausage was awesome, their coffee was decent.

Bad things:  Their huevos rancheros were mediocre, and their service was TERRIBLE.  I tried to tip my waitress but realized I was out of small bills, so I tried to buy some chocolate at the chocolate counter so I could make change from a $20.  I waited for 5 minutes, made eye contact with multiple waiters, and was ignored.  So I left a $1 tip, and I'm not even sure they deserved that.

Bottom line:  their food might be worth the trek to Logan Circle on a Sunday morning if you plan on ordering something involving chocolate, but don't expect any sort of customer service from these folks.  And if you're craving traditional brunch items, go somewhere else.

I panned this place the first few times I went but it's stock is rising as of late possibly because of some of the changes here.

Amid the myriad of options, a customer needs to know how to stay focused in this store. Eyes on the prize - diva drinks! Shake your polaroid picture while ordering up your flavor of choice. I like the Lucy but perhaps because I got one on Lucy's birthday and it was half off.

I can't imagine anyone actually being comprehensive about the multitude of other food, gift, and drink options here.

This place was a bit of a let-down. I'd heard rave reviews of their diva drinks and was excited to try the shake version.

I ordered the Grace, a salted caramel and chocolate shake. It wasn't actually a shake though. The texture more closely resembled an icy cold Yoo-hoo, thicker than milk (at least the skim stuff I drink....) but by no means a milkshake.

The flavor was also not impressive. Imagine an already sweet, thick chocolate milk - and then add caramel syrup. None of the salt notes came through for me; it was simply overwhelmingly sweet.

Milkshakes are a major weakness of mine, so I did have high hopes.

My husband ordered the brownie, which they kindly offered to heat up. It arrived at the table warm, with little puffs of whipped cream, looking cute. Once again, it was nothing to write home about. The brownie was kind of dry and just unimpressive.

The prices here aren't cheap and when it isn't difficult to make brownies or milkshakes at home, well....

They did have a lot of pretty chocolates in interesting flavors, so maybe that's the way to go. I just doubt I'll ever come back to try them.

Great place to go for dessert! Milkshakes, ice cream, cake, hot chocolate, what could be better? And the prices are pretty reasonable-- $5 for a slice of cake, $4.25 for a milkshake.

We had a slice of white chocolate cake which was divine.

ACKC just made my rainy day!

I had the Brigitte Bardot hot chocolate which was so good. It was so rich that I couldn't finish it but that is definitely not a bad thing. It had my taste buds doing flips and jumping jacks.

Then my wallet ended up doing a couple of flips itself due to the fact that ACKC has a happy hour. A hot chocolate happy hour...who would've thunk?!?

ACKC is fabulous. It's one of those perfect places to pop in during a free minute or stop in with girlfriends for a decadent dessert. I've had the Divas and the macarons. I'll preface this by saying I am a macaron fiend and snob :) I loved the macarons, especially the tropical flavors. They're divine, as are the chocolates and ice creams.

This place has a lot of potential but it just isn't up to par yet.

The good: The passion fruit macarons are so good that I feel like shedding a tear when they are gone. The chocolate and coffee ones are super tasty too.

The bad: Brunch is hit or miss. The chocolate stuffed French toast with lavender is superb though the other options disappointed. The egg dishes were way overpriced and not up to snuff. Service is not that great. I have always had to wait even if I just order something from the counter. Last, but not least - they have the most uncomfortable chairs and use plastic cutlery.

The ugly: The decor is a little much. Kind of a kindergarten teacher meets drag queen look.

The selection is amazing- all kinds of varieties of hot chocolate.  I bought some 10-card off KGB deals or someplace, so I get to try them all.  Of the 4 that I have tried thus far, I have had to take 3 back to add more sweetener or syrup in them- a messy task considering the whipped cream and other toppings that are on top.  Also, only the first one was hot- the rest were a complacent room temperature.  The wait is long, and for some reason, their other desserts don't seem to be that good- I had a chocolate chip cookie cake thing that I ended up throwing away.  I will be going back to use up my card but no plans to return after that...

I'm not usually one to splurge on a milkshake.  But when my roommates and I came across this fun-looking place during a trek down to U St. for dinner--and all of us being suckers for desserts--we couldn't resist and decided to explore.

Well, it did not disappoint.  It was a $5 and change well spent.  I had the Lena Horne milkshake--milk chocolate milkshake with spices such as nutmeg and cloves, topped with whipped cream and some toffee.  One friend ordered the red velvet lava fudge cake (not being a huge fan of red velvet I wasn't impressed, but everyone else who tried it loved it).  The third member of the party ordered the Doris Day sundae.  Everyone was pleased with their selection.  The desserts were unique and delicious.  The decor and atmosphere were funky and great for a group of four to hang out and chat.

I wouldn't make a habit of coming in here simply because it's a little overpriced; that being said, if I am looking to splurge on both calories and cash this is where I'll go.

I love the hot chocolates at ACKC, but I give it five stars for customer service.

I placed an order for chocolate capitol buildings to distribute at a conference in Florida. When the chocolates didn't arrive, I called ACKC and the staff lept into action, tracking my package and looking up the phone number for the local post office where I was staying, so I didn't have to deal with the dreaded USPS customer service line.

They could have given me a tracking number and made it my problem, but instead they were positive and super-helpful.

    I love ACKC!

Went to a chocolate/wine/ice cream pairing class last night.  They shouldn't have wine in the title because you get less than a full glass total throughout the night.

They gave us almost too much chocolate, but the quality was great and it was delicious.  The ice cream with sauces is amazing, especially the Lucy sauce which was chipotle and cinnamon.

I went in for the chocolate class--I had bought it for my fiance as a gift.  The shop itself is really nice but there was no real area for the chocolate class.  We had to pull a few random tables together and awkwardly lean in to hear the woman give the class. She also read her notes the entire time--it was like having a report on chocolate being read. I zoned out more than a few times.  It was hard to hear and people kept walking in and out of the class--we were seated at the bar, so we would lose what the instructor was saying because of the various machines at the bar.  It was definitely not what I pictured or had read about on the website.

I would recommend just going to AKCK and asking lots of questions when you go to purchase your chocolate--you'll probably get the same amount of information on a more intimate level.

This place sums up for me what's wrong with many boutique-y shops in the center of a city. Too damn expensive!! I love the concept of walking a few blocks to buy gifts from a locally owned store rather than going to a chain, but the chocolate here is far too expensive for me to casually get it en route to a dinner party, for example.

But I'm really writing b/c I just stopped in for an ice cream cone and the one they gave me was MINUTE! Literally about half the size of a regular ice cream cone from your average parlor. I am an ice cream fanatic and was really looking forward to a mid-day treat. Oh well. I won't do that again.

On the plus side, the sugar cone was nice and fresh.

Came here with my husband after having our taste buds stimulated by the "the taste of chocolate" event at the National Museum of the American Indian.

I was excited by the selection of Hot Chocolate.  We sat at the bar and got ourselves ready for a treat.  I  really wanted a couple, but the sampler - three 4-oz tastings for $11.95 - seemed like a terrible deal, given that each 12-oz Diva is $4.25!  If you do the simple math, they're charging you $11.95 for $4.25-worth of chocolate!  I did appreciate the honest of the barista, who told us it was a terrible deal upfront.

I got the Lucy (semi-sweet chocolate infused with chipotle) and my husband got the Eartha Kitt (semi-sweet chocolate with toffee syrup).  Both were good, although all 12-oz of the Lucy may have been a little strong for my taste.  I love spicy food and handle spicy very well, but something about the concentration of the chocolate and the healthy quantity of the chilis was a little much to digest after a half a cup.  I wish they had the 4-oz tastings for a reasonable price, it would be a perfectly quantity of chocolate to satisfy your cravings.

Apart from the Divas, they have many selections of confections, from chocolates to cupcakes and brownies.  They also sell gift chocolates and cards.

They also serve brunch on Sundays from 11am-2pm.  From the brunch menu, it appears standard fare, but it may be nice to come here to have a cup of hot chocolate with your omelette or ham and cheese croissant.

ACKC gets four stars for atmosphere and two for taste - at least for the thing I had most recently.  I will say that I have had peanut butter pie here that was *excellent* but they didn't have it when I went in recently - instead the hubby and I split a brownie sundae.  If the brownie was warm, I think this would have transformed the dish into something lovely and delicious.  Instead, it was just an overly sweet bowl of goodies - nice, but not great.

The coolest part was their little sundae buffet.  When you shell out your $7 for a brownie with ice cream and more whipped cream than you could ever want, you also get access to a huge tray of a la carte toppings.

Atmosphere-wise, it's a very nice little shop and a great place to meet people to chat.

I don't fall into the girly stereotype where shoes become a fetish and tubs of ice cream are for drowning out feelings. I don't usually like chocolates, I find them too sweet, BUT the Lavender Pistachio bar from ACKC is heavenly: Belgian couverture infused with lavender de Provence and salt roasted pistachios.

I now understand PMS cravings for chocolate, I just hadn't found the chocolate bar for me yet. This is the chocolate bar that I use to bribe myself with to process one more client account at work.  I always buy 1 extra bar in case other people are around when I want to eat some and i am obliged to share.

The earthy flavor of the lavender is the best part of the bar for me. The tiny dried flowers are aromatic and give good bursts flowery/grass flavors when eaten whole. The sea salt pairs nicely with the chocolate too. I like when i get a small shaving of salt on my tongue in the midst of creamy chocolate. Pistachio adds a nice toasted smell and a bit of texture to the bar.

The esprseso, roasted almond with shoyu, and nibs are my other favorites. I don't mess with any fruits or spices in my chocolate.

I don't order food or eat there, I just buy chocolates and jet. I haven't taken a chocolate class either. In my experience the majority of people in there are tourists, so most people are confused about where to order, who to buy chocolates from, if drinks are going to be sent to tables, etc. I expect this and just ask to be rung up wherever there is a staff member. They're nice and helpful.

Treat this like a nice neighborhood chocolate cafe, no need to get expectations sky high. If you read about this place in a newspaper or magazine and are driving X miles on a special night with out of town guests in tow...you might be disappointed, you might not. Go with an open mind, not one published dude's opinion.

I total agree with another yelper's (tad bit harsh) assessment of the decor. It's not how I would choose to decorate but - what do you expect from a place that names it's chocolate drinks after famous people? This place is that sort of kitchy.

The chocolate has been accused of being stale! Out of approx. 40 bars and truffles I've bought, none have been stale. I go about once a week and usually aim to get 3-4 bars and usually one flavor is sold out (aka they make small batches which sell out frequently).

Wish I had a lavender pistachio bar right now!

Brunch review. Sigh, where to begin?

Price: how can you charge $14 for a plate of food and serve everything with plastic cutlery and plastic cups? This is an insult to my wallet and the environment.

Service: one flustered server for the entire brunch crowd during MidTown Dog Days? Didn't you expect more people would come due to higher foot traffic and think that perhaps you might need some back-up? While the only server was overly apologetic and sweet about the loooong waits for ordering, for food arrival, and for the check to drop, I also wonder if he was in the right field of work. He seemed nervous, a bit frustrated, and not quite confident enough to handle the pressure of serving the whole house solo.

Food: The concept of french toast stuffed with chocolate and bacon seems heavenly to me. The execution, however, was barely palatable. Tip one: take out the smoked paprika - it totally doesn't work. Tip two: get tastier bacon and a better recipe for the french toast. My companion ordered an omelet and it came accompanied with a piece of rock-solid white Wonderbread toast. Really, at $14 for a plate of eggs, there should be much better bread included.

Atmosphere: Seating outside is a major plus. However, the menu, all of our plastic cutlery, straw wrappers, and empty plastic cups just basically blew around in the wind. Why all of the disposable junk? I still don't get this.

ACKC should stick to being a chocolatier and perhaps a hot-chocolate bar and give up on the brunch idea. Clearly their heart is not into being a restaurant, but they must have felt it was necessary to jump on the brunch bandwagon and try to draw in more money this way.

Although the place is a bit small with only around 10 tables, the hot chocolate was very good.  I also liked that it had a coffee shop vibe where you could chill out with some friends, but it was just a bit nicer than your typical Starbucks.

The downside was the service and the price.  However, it's a great place to go on occasion and I'll definitely be back.

On a hot day, try the lavender lemonade; it tastes mostly like regular lemonade but smells clean and flowery (My husband hated it though; he thought it tasted like soap).

On a cold day, try the "Lucy," hot chocolate spiked with chipotle and cinnamon.  Its sweet spiciness can leave one's throat feeling singed (my husband likened it to swallowing a torch), but it did warm me up fast.

The cafe's decor consisted of odd mosaics with lots of butts. They were for sale. And yes I posted a pic http://www.yelp.com/bi...

Coming from a chocoholic of sorts:

Kingsbury Chocolates are so good. The flavors are awesome. I tried a goat cheese truffle which was right on the money. I love their truffles. The store itself has a cafe for winery and caffienation. There's also art hanging that I believe you can buy.

Hailing itself as DCs first cocoa-bar, Artfully Chocolate Kingsbury Confection just opened last week on 14th St. I happened to be walking by with a friend who loves chocolate, so we went in. Just to be clear I do NOT like chocolate.  (I am an anomaly within the female population) Every once in a while I can nibble on a teeny bit of really good dark chocolate and I am set for months.

With all that being said.... their truffles are AMAZING. WOW. SIMPLY AMAZING. I had the cinnamon-chipotle truffle (a spicy warm creamy ball of goodness) and the Brie truffle (a ridiculous brie cheese and chocolate blend coated with black sesame seeds) These are truly the kind of chocolates you nibble and experience. It took us about 20 minutes to savor two truffles each. My friend also went for a brie truffle, but also had a toasted coconut (think fresh coconut bursting in your mouth) The truffles are made fresh daily on-site, and they have a wide variety of other chocolate confections that are as dazzling to the eye as I am sure they are your mouth.

The space is warm, inviting and very bright. The owner of the store has decorated the space with his own brilliant art and orchids. You can be assured that I will be back there frequently over the winter to try out their cocoa bar.

At long last, a dessert place in DC that's open late(r) - 11PM at the weekends.

In addition to selling chocolates and chocolate-related novelty items, ACKC also does a variety of excellent hot chocolates named for some of Hollywood's once leading ladies - Judy, Marilyn, Lucy... I'll definitely return for the Audrey, an intense, French-style drinking chocolate that's served in a dainty espresso cup. It's smooth and thick and suitable only for serious chocoholics. Swiss Miss this ain't! In fact, all of the hot chocolates at ACKC are made with shaved chocolate; no power here.
I'm not so much a fan of the "art", lots of which is for sale here.

And Biagio, with its wide selection (Recchiuti, NEWTREE, Christopher Elbow, Guittard, Dolfin) and proximity to home remains my go-to for chocolate but I'll definitely be back to ACKC for dessert or anytime I'm craving hot chocolate.
