We went there recently for a friend's birthday and the sushi was great!
We were seated in the back room which was way too loud. We could barely hear each other so we made it more of a eating business than a socializing one.
The edemame was delicious, the red pepper did it for me. We also had the sashimi sampler and the fish was super fresh. We tried a few rolls and the Jalapeño Tuna was my personal favorite. Looking forward to going back but will make sure to sit in the front room this time...
I came here with my boyfriend because he had a card for $15 off of a $50+ purchase. We started out with about $30's worth of stuff, before ordering more to meet that minimum. The first half of our order took twenty minutes to arrive, during which I boredly watched the waitresses bring dishes to and from the back. Before the second batch of food came, we were trying to remember what we had ordered and what it even tasted like. This sushi is completely forgettable.
And the atmosphere sucks, with its loud obnoxious music (granted, they seated us right next to the speaker). There was one cool bartender that would come by and chat with us while he picked songs from the touch screen behind us, asking us if we had any requests, but still, this place wasn't so much bad as it was just utterly bland.
This is a nice spot deep in the Marina beyond Fillmore & Lombard. I like how it's understated from the outside but lively & kickin once you get in. The food is good enough, definitely California style sushi with western influences on every roll.
Great way to start off a night of drinking, right down the street from Delaney's.
Thought I would update and reiterate how delicious the garlic edamame is. It is super spicy though, so be careful if you can't take the heat. It comes doused with that hot Thai chili garlic sauce. Yum. Came here last night with a g/f and I basically ate the entire plate. Service is good and the sushi is always super fresh!

I try to avoid the Marina after living there and going out there for the past couple of years, but… Read more »
I have to admit I wasn't too excited when I found out we were eating here. first thing that put me off was the only other asian person I saw was the waitress. now how many good asian restaurants have you been to that didn't have any asians?
the hostess and waiter were really nice. they were very attentive and helpful. we ordered several sushi rolls and a sashimi combo. I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were. the fish was really fresh and the rolls were nicely made and packed with flavor.
the only negative is the price. there were 5 of us and we spent $35 each. it was a little pricey but what do you expect eating in the marina.
Is it possible to be as shit-tastic as Ace Wasabi's?
Nope!
Went here with some friends (their idea) and it was a complete nightmare from start to finish.
What went wrong?
People on pub crawls kept spilling into the restaurant. Classy!
The hostess was such an airhead (or was she high?) that she was completely confused about who was in our party, when we had arrived, where to stick us, etc.
Food was yucky.
We didn't receive the majority of our food because the kitchen was so backed up. I know what you're thinking - sometimes kitchen's are swamped... Are they swamped to the point where you should wait 45+ minutes for sushi? I don't think so.
Yuck. I hate trendy sushi spots like this. If the food isn't the draw and they still don't have their service figured out, why bother?
First off, the sushi was mediocre. Also, the edamame was disgusting. I know that isn't really what you should judge a sushi place by, but it was gross. Squishy, almost sweet... ick. What really bothered me... I was here with a group of 10 people, who all got their food 15 minutes before I did. I sat for 15 minutes, all the while trying to convince my friends to go ahead and eat! Apparently they split the orders from one table and give them to different chefs. Really? Who thought that was a good idea? Once my sushi finally came, all of my friends were done. I was embarrassed that everyone had to sit there while I finished, and they had to watch me eat, which was weird...
And after all that, a few minutes after I left I got a stomach ache.
The one redeeming factor is that they were able to accommodate 10 people quickly without a reservation (although my friend made a reservation about a week ago, but when I got there early and told the hostess I was there with a party with a reservation, she informed me they don't take reservations... what?)
Eat somewhere else.
buy one round cider smoke bomb, get one round free? yes pls!!
My gf and I are definitely fans of ace wasabi! happy hour is always fun and they have bingo at 6 ( or is it 6:30?) where the winner gets a gift certificate to ace. We almost won a few times, but always got beat to it!
no matter what else we order, we always get the crunchy ace roll and the crunchy sake roll. both are very different rolls that you cant find anywhere else. the crunchy ace roll has macadamia nuts that give it a different texture. the crunchy sake roll is fried potato bits with salmon and lemon on top...very different and very scrumptious. my gf had the eggplant and avocado handroll and said it was just mediocre. the toro and blue crab handroll were both delicious. our server was also very attentive. another waitress had came out with our dishes and didn't know what we ordered so our waiter came out to describe each roll.
we'll be back!
*nom nom*
It takes a lot to get me out to the Marina. Let's just preface this reviewing by saying that. A lot. When my friend invited me for free sushi, of course I could not decline. We ventured out into the Marina. We made a reservation which didn't seem like it mattered because they sat us down right away without asking if we had a reservation. We sat in the front room and the music was kind of loud. A mixture of top 40 and random rock. I ordered the kamikaze chicken fingers to start. I loved the spicy garlic aioli sauce too. I had the Ozzy Roll which was also delicious. It had tempura shrimp with spicy sauce and sliced jalapenos. I loved the jalapenos on top it was the perfect touch of spicy. We came back a few weeks later and I ordered the same thing with an Anchor steam. The food was consistently good. We didn't have a reservation the second time and I wish we had-since there was a long wait for a Monday nite. The service was not as great the second time either. No one refilled our drinks-which you kind of need when you are eating sushi-especially when there are jalapenos on top. I wanted a second Anchor steam but no one ever came around to ask to refill it. They also never brought us plates! We were eating out of our soy sauce mini plate. It was a little strange that the server never picked up on that. I wouldn't come here for an intimate date. Great for may be a loud group or a good friend outing, not somewhere I would go if you wanted to have a serious conversation.
Hola folks!
well well well...seeing as how I took a very timid foreigner here, who isn't used to fresh California and Japanese seafood, it was already destined to be a wonderful, daring experience!!
the folks here are all very friendly, even the Asian chefs who usually are rather quiet seemed to light up at each and every customer, they threw out their suggestions freely and happily...our waitress was amazing and beautiful, she even comped us a saki and beer at the end
the restaurant offers a great mix between cooked and raw dishes so everyone can easily find something to munch on. i hiiighly recommend the sauteed scallops, not only are they a garlicy-delight, bu they come in a beautiful clam shell with endives and cheese smothered all over the top...fabulous. second, order the fresh sashimi of the day, it was definitely exotic and wonderful.
the missing star? the seating is a little awkward and marina yup yups can disturb the dining experience..tee hee...other than that, its definitely worth a visit, if I lived closer i'd be a regular fo sheeeze.
I came here a few years ago for a friend's birthday dinner, who had chosen the place because "it's good, and more importantly, there's no ugly people!"
I've been here several times since then, and it is good, and I'm pretty sure there aren't any ugly people here either. I no longer eat seafood, but I do remember the 49er roll being pretty tasty. Now I stick to the garden roll, which is probably the best vegetarian roll I've had, anywhere. Throw in some buy one get one free sake-bombing, and I'm a happy camper!
When I requested a glass of water from the waitress while dining here last week, she gave me the most confused look and replied, "Water...?" I glanced over to my friends and they were all giggling.
I've concluded that she was either...
a) Very high
OR
b) Very stupid
I fail to believe that anyone is that dumb.
Anyway, the sushi isn't the best or the worse I have ever had. Ace's is a great happy hour spot.
Lastly, notable is the roll with the cream cheese and mango. I didn't expect to enjoy it but it was tasty.
Wish there was one of these in LA...
Pros: Fresh sashimi, hamachi kama is well done, prices are really reasonable and it's got a great laidback vibe and the staff is awesome...they usually hook us up with free sake when we're there since we're regulars...
Cons: Hard to think of any...honestly. It's not the best sashimi I've had in my life, but it's pretty damn good.
Yummy sushi and sashimi, great drinks, laid-back vibe, REASONABLE prices, and bingo = Two thumbs up!
I used to like this place, but after being to several other places for sushi, I'm beginning to love it. Considering what you would pay and what you get, it is a deal. Favorite roll is the salmon with the thin slice of lemon on the top, with tempura bits center (Can't remember the name )! Yummy!
This restaurant spends more of its name's real estate trying to sound cool (Ace / Rock 'n Roll) or hot (Wasabi) than on its cuisine. For once, I guess, one can judge the book by its cover.
Atmosphere was lively even at 10 PM on a holiday Monday. We sat at the sushi bar and the chefs were talkative and fun. Service was attentive and quick.
Sushi itself was a bit disappointing. We found the salmon a bit rubbery. Hamachi Lime Roll was more about the cilantro than anything else. The tai was exceptional, however. As they were cleaning up the bar, one of the chefs said that they freeze the fish at night to make it last longer which was a bit of a let down, although that might be more commonplace than I imagine.
Price was very reasonable for sushi but fair for what we got.
All in all, a fun place for a late night eat.
A lively atmosphere, including a sometimes rowdy bar (could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your disposition), but decidedly mediocre sushi.
I had my standby nigiris and thought the rice used was too moist. Also some of the cuts of fish were a little chewier than ideal. The spider roll was ok, no complaints. I didn't subject them to my saba and uni test, I had a feeling it would be a bad idea. The selection of nigiri was acceptable but not extensive.
Price seemed reasonable with a large group and some drinks all 'round it ended up being about $45 per person.
Final word: if your friends drag you, don't worry... it's fine.
i came here randomly with some friends one night, and yay i found another yummy fresh sushi rest!!!! they have one of the best hamachi kama and the sashimi are soooo fresh. Our waitress was extremely nice too. she even helped us pour our big bottle of alky when she saw our shot cups were empty! i cant wait to come back and try everything on the menu!
btw, parking is a b****. i came on a week nite. my god i was circling around that seemed forever!
So here's how the conversation prior to me walking into Ace went:
S: we're going to head out to the Marina. A's idea.
Me: A WOULD pick the Marina.
S: so it's this place called Ace Wasabi.
Me: Where?!
S: Ace Wasabi. [Repeat 5 times because I'm hard of hearing].
Me: I'll just Yelp it and meet you guys there.
Parking: it's a skill that cannot be learned. You just need luck and a whole lot of patience. Or cash?
Service: friendly chefs, friendly hostess, super cool waiter.
Drinks: how can we say no to sake bombs when the second round is on them? Just know when to stop.
Food:
Spicy green beans: awesome, and tasty.
Sushi: fresh, innovative, delicious and a visual delight to boot.
Atmosphere: with the rounds of sake bombs going at every other table, you can't expect anything less than rowdy.
Loves it!
Happy hour hamachi kama...the best!! N perfect price!!!- sushi is good, hand rolls are excellente, sake ( I always get the unfiltered one) great.. Good crowd, friendly service, good location. What else can I ask for?!;)- I've been there multiple times and am curious if there are any health risks for eating sushi almost everyday?!?! I want some hamachi Kama right now!!!! Yum! I absolutely recommend it! try it, u'll see!
went here the other night with friends who love sushi and wanted to eat, though I don't and accompanied them and watched them eat. yeaaaa.... I didn't eat sushi but they had tasteLESS fried Calamari that was fresh, hot but not even supplied sauce and salt could out flavor into it. Friends finally walked out not happy as they thought the sushi they ordered was yeck, plus when another item was ordered, after 20 mins and no delivery, they gave up and we departed. The staff was very friendly greeting us upon entrance and exit, but such slow service. The place was crowded front and back though, but still... 20mins for an additional item to be served is quite long. The miso soup was tasty... :-)
I just recently dined here, on a Monday night. It was moderately full. sat @ the beer bar where the bartender took our order. we had a couple rolls and several beers and sake. the rolls were great.
The ambiance is rock and roll motif. wasn't too impressed But would return, with a group of friends to crank it up a notch.
It was overall a decent sushi bar.
O yeah had the Green Tea Cupcake w/ Lychee Frosting...... Had better. but had to try the combo out... ;p Ya know.
Rock N Roll time!
Very energetic place that gets crowded all the time. With the good food and cool atmosphere, that's expected.
- They have BINGO on some nights where you can win a $20 gift certificate
- Sashimi is FRESH
- Seaweed salad is good
- Service is friendly
- Gets crowded and loud, especially after the sake starts flowing!
Location might be a hassle for parking, but there's plenty of bars to hang out at after dinner. Not a bad place to grab some good Japanese food in the Marina area.
Ace Wasabi presents a good middle ground between somewhere like Naked Fish (quiet) and Mas Sake (loud). We had a table by the front, lively atmosphere but not obnoxiously loud.
Sushi was good. The sashimi was fresh, the nigiri just so-so. Really liked the lobster roll with mango. Probably sacrilege for those "sushi snobs" out there, but it was a nice balance of flavors, had a good "tang" to it, and wasn't outrageously pricey.
Service was good; our waitress was patient with our ever-changing order and very attentive.
My friends and I love this place!
Here's why:
Awesome sushi (fresh and yummy)
Awesome staff (everyone including chefs)
HOT bartender!
Okay, so we're girls and not to shabby looking. So every time we go there, not only do we come out full and a bit tispy but we have so much fun. The bartender always gives us free drinks and we have some pull with the chefs. So we get a couple free rolls here and there.
Even without the free stuff, we love this place! We always have fun. What could be better? Good food, good drinks, good company and good service!
My only complaint, it's a bit pricey but what sushi place that's good isn't. I don't want to get sick, so I rather pay for quality fish than eat something questionable.
Great service... from our waiter! He was very attentive and understanding, where as it seemed some of the other gals working there had more of an attitude. The sushi is very good, the atmosphere is fun -it's definitely really loud so I would recommend it as a stop before a night out.
Pretty good sushi for the price. Great atmosphere inside..and love the "buy one sake bomb, get one free" special.
Get drunk then walk to the bars. FUN
I spent hours doing research on yelp looking for a good sushi restaurant in the Marina. My friend and I wanted an easy on the stomach meal for a night out on the town and have tried most of the other sushi establishments in the Marina so decided to try somethign new.
The reviews for Ace Wasabi's let me think that the atmosphere was to be desired. I really wasn't all that concerned about the food b/c I typically order the same thing at every sushi restaurant.
However, the atmosphere was less than desirable. The crowd was unnattractive in a cocky way and the place looked very commercialized, maybe like tex-mex type. It was hmmm,,,,unnappetizing?
I must say the wait staff is courteous and the sushi isn't bad. The service and food aren't why the place get's two stars.
As an elite member I have to start being pickier about handing out my stars....And this place just didn't do it for me.
This place rocks the hizzy! I've been going for years and the food, the service, the people, the atmosphere have all been consistently solid! Three cheers for keeping up the great work.
meh, i like naked fish better - yea free edimame!
Normally when you go to a sushi place the menu is loaded with different simple rolls and sashimi, and then there are some fancy rolls - not here. The downfall here is that the menu is limited - they have a few simple rolls, a few fancy rolls, a couple sashimi and nigri options, and some other entree options.
What we got did taste good though!
Also, the front of the restaurant is very casual - kind of looks like a fast food place? (think high tables and stools) The back is more like a restaurant with tables and chairs
One of my favorite neighborhood places for sushi with friends. We go there all the time for sushi bingo! Yup, most weekdays at about 6:30 they pull out the bingo cards for your chance to win a $20 gift certificate for your next visit. I haven't won yet - boohoo! But so far, the first timers we bring always win. WTH?!!
Such a great atmosphere and the music the play there just brings you back to the 80s and 90s. Lots of fun! I have to admit that I really only venture there on the weekdays. Fridays and Saturdays tend to be a bit crowded and a bit of a scene, but other than that the sushi is yummy enough. I recommend the butterfish nigiri, crunchy sake roll, the seared something tuna with ponzu sauce appetizer (sorry, can't remember the name!)... and wash it all down with hot sake.. mmm mmm
I've been wanting to try this place with my friends for a while now. I've heard rave reviews about it and I'm glad to say it lived up to all the hype.
The ambience was urban/industrial that whispers trendy but not enough to scream "I'm too cool." The food was off the wall fantastic. I don't think I ate one thing there this weekend that I didn't like.
The appetizers were amazing with some bordering on the surprisingly good. We ordered a variety of standard and signature rolls which were just amazing. I have to say the signature rolls are the way to go if you're tired of the same old sushi rolls and wanted to try something different. They all had unique flavors that tasted delicious and the presentation was very nice as well.
I've been to a bunch of sushi joints around San Francisco and this place is probably one of the best sushi places in town.
I completely had Ace's pegged as more of a hang out sushi joint with the scene of every other table doing sake bombs while rocking out to blaring tunes and eating crap sushi than an authentic Japanese restaurant (it's a general assumption apparently,) but I was pleasantly surprised by the selection of Japanese specialties and sake on the menu.
We ordered a few rolls from the regular menu and a special roll that our server practically forced us to order. His "It's REALLY good" went from a light, suggestive tone to a deep, commanding snarl (no joke.) He claimed to have ate it for 2 straight weeks and would take it off our bill if we didn't like it, so we did bc we had nothing to lose, although it was a little intimidating and really weird.
All the rolls were really good, specifically the special roll (shame on me for not remembering the name) that our server "persuaded" us to order. I could definitely see myself eating that everyday for 2weeks if I had the opportunity. Anyways, I stood corrected, as Ace's does serve quality, authentic fare, and we were the only table slamming sake glasses and rocking out to the tunes of our own obnoxious voices.
I'm generally cautious of going to Sushi places that are either themed (i.e. Rock & Roll) or not clearly authentic Japanese, but I stumbled into Ace Wasabi's following some afternoon drinks in the Marina because people were craving sushi. Maybe it was the drinks I had prior to dinner that fueled my appetite, or maybe it was just the fact that I wasn't sure what to expect, but the rolls at Ace Wasabi actually weren't bad. In fact, I stuffed my face like the piggy that I am.
A couple of highlights:
Crunchy Ace Wasabi Roll
Flying Kamikaze Roll
Tiger Roll
The restaurant is loud and packed full of the Marina crowd, so it's a great place to hang out with friends...not so much for kids or a family dinner. Don't forget to check out the giant ipod-style jukebox that you can play with. Rockin.
To the 200+ reviewers below: We get it - you think the Marina is pretentious. By the way - you (i.e. Hayes/Cole/Potrero/etc hipsters) still keep visiting and bitch every time ... so suck it!
Now to review the actual restaurant ...
They actually have pretty damn good sushi. I'm not talking about a Philly Roll. Which by the way, if anyone mentions a Philly Roll in their review please disregard immediately!
Their sushi is legit and well priced. The owner/manager is extremely nice (and she's hot). Its a fun crowd (please see comment above before rolling your eyes) and they don't take resos so grab a drink and wait.
This is NOT Mas Sake. The food is very good and so is the atmosphere.
This is a totally average sushi place. Decent nigiri and a good assortment of funky 'white people' rolls. As a whiter person I enjoyed the one with scallop and green onion on top. Oh their tuna tartar is good too.
BUT, this place does BINGO every night at 6:30. One round and the winner gets a $20 gift certificate!! NICE totally RANDOM touch - love it!!
Yes, the people here late night and on weekends tend to be tools but com early, eat sushi, win bingo and be merry.
BF and I went here a few months back, and though it was my first time, he'd been there quite often in the past. I wasn't that impressed, and neither was he - saying it'd gone down hill since the last time he was there. I would agree that it was OK, but not great.
(We ordered the kobe, some rolls, and I got some nigiri...)
...another memorable joint for me. My - now hubby - but back then boyfriend and I would frequent this place often. He lived close by and it was our "go to" spot for sushi.
This is the only sushi place where the boy has truly LOVED their spider rolls --- they are OUT OF THIS WORLD at Ace Wasabi.
Love the atmosphere... it is a fun place to meet up with friends and enjoy decent quality sushi.
It certainly isn't "the BEST" but it hits the spot.
Ace Wasabi Restored to Excellence!
Thank you Ken Lowe! Thank you Akiyo! Thank you Marisa! Thank you to all the Chefs! Thank you to all the Bus Boys and Dish Washers!
I'm here today to tell you my faith has been restored. I can honestly say without any reservation that Ace is back on top of it's game. And yes, I do believe we here at IrascibleChef had something to do with it...
Of course Ken Lowe's response to his loyal customers comments ultimately deservedly gets the credit and thanks! The last time I was back, a short while ago, I proclaimed that Ace was back, but this past visit pushes it over the top!
The latest addition to Ace's dining room--Akiyo our lovely host and manager visibly present and actively participating in our fantabulous dining experience.
We did have to wait to be seated (but it was welcomed.) Great, there's a favorite place around the corner to get a drink. We were back within the time limit, but we did have an additional 35 minute wait. No big deal--Asahi and Saki does the soul good.
When we were seated we followed the hostess to the back area and this nicely dressed woman apologized for our wait. (I thought that was interesting--very interesting!) I asked the hostess if that was a manager (A visible floor manager was something I highly recommended and had previously been painfully absent.) I was delighted to hear that it was in fact a manager. (I was asked if I would like to speak with her. I said no, knowing I would before the end of the evening.)
We had many of the past favorites including the Albacore Tataki (which is still the best ANYWHERE,) Tuna and Salmon Tartare Old Style on deep fried Shinto leaves (not on the menu any more--just ask for it Old Style. This time the ingredient I don't care for was isolated--dill and I think a little lemon that starts to chemically cook the tartare.)
On the rolls side of things we had the Kamikaze--spicy tuna & asparagus wrapped w/ albacore tuna topped w/ ponzu & scallions, which is always a treat, Spider Could be claimed to be the best Spider roll any where, and the newest addition to the USUAL the Ozzy--oh my, it's soooo goood! The Ozzy is crab draped on top spicy tuna, topped with sliced fresh Jalapenos that give the flavor without too much heat--simply scrumptious!
On the Nigiri side of things--Salmon sushi is my favorite and always a must order--it was fresh and delicious and Hamachi Toro, which I've been getting into lately, was as my brother said, "that was the best bite!"
--All was washed down with Asahi and Saki as if there were any doubts...
We were served quickly with a smile by a helpful, knowledgeable server Marisa who did graciously join us for sip of Saki.
As we were leaving I stopped to thank Akiyo, whom didn't have business cards yet, gave me some chopsticks with her name and my favorite restaurant in SF it's restoration to excellence. Ken Lowe--great decision, great hire! Thank you!

iChef Returns to Ace
As a follow up to my Ace Wasabi: How Important is the Waiter post I needed to… Read more »
Saturday is one of those days when anything can happen. And by anything, I mean play a little beer pong, sober up, have some sake, and end up feeling like you've been run over by a steamroller the next day. The next day being Easter Sunday, when you stumble out of a new friend's house after sleeping on her couch, to catch a cab back to your car, where you smartly left it.
Prior to that...
The soap star, the birthday boy, the italian, the runner and I came here after much internal dialogue with myself over what it was, exactly, that I wanted to do. The runner thought she knew someone who worked here, but alas, that person had moved to Colorado. Or Oregon. I can't remember.
We sit at the table near the window to get the ultimate people watching, and I swear the bartender checked me out. Or saw how crap I looked. One or the other. The menu wasn't as extensive as I would have liked, although if you eat sushi, I suppose there's some nifty stuff on there. The runner, who also doesn't eat fish (yay) suggested that we get the chicken finger things, which turned out to be delicious. I also ordered the chicken teriyaki, which was nowhere near as tasty as those chicken fingers. They also have hot sake with a splash of plum wine, which is pretty tasty. I ordered my usual sushi staple, the Kappa Maki roll, and it fell apart before I could poke it with my sticks. Our waitress was great, and put up with the fact that we brought in a case of beer and were trying to float away on a river of sake. She didn't get mad when we ordered random appetizers, and little else.
Not impressed, but not going to run away next time someone suggests it, either.
One thing was the music...
I blame the Sopranos. Why else would Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" play THREE TIMES IN ONE VISIT?
Came here with a friend not too long ago to have dinner and to visit a fellow named Mikey who works here (and used to be a customer of ours when we were bartenders!).
After getting situated at the sushi bar (where all the action takes place), we drank some sake cocktails which were fruity and light tasting (couldn't tell they were alcoholic).
We ordered some tuna tartare to start which was on top of guacamole which we happily scarfed down with those styrofoam looking shrimp chips. For sushi, we had various nigiri and some of their special rolls. One of the spicy rolls had chopped jalapeno that made it extra good. The fish was all very buttery and good quality. Just when we thought we were good with the amount of food we ordered, the sushi chefs (as playful, goofy and flirty as they were) gave us a ton of other things to try on the house (other nigiri and rolls)! My favorite was the tuna tataki and we were also made a special lobster omelette by Mikey...he insisted that he make something for us even though we were thisclose to exploding from fullness so we just said "surprise us!"
Just as we thought we were done gorging ourselvers, he made us dessert in the form of tempura bananas, sliced up and present like sushi, haha.
and lastly, just as we thought that it couldn't get any better, Mikey refused to let us pay the bill no matter how much we protested! Unbelievable! I'm eternally grateful for such a wonderful dining experience.
