what a great place. I hesitate to call it a hardware store, because it's more like a think-of-something-you-want/need-and-poof-it's-the re kind of store. like milk crates (strangely impossible to find elsewhere). or curtain rods. ski edge tuning file, anyone? prices are actually reasonable, too.
and the staff... I cannot wander for more than 2 seconds alone without being offered assistance. which is a good thing because it's like a treasure hunt for goodies in there. -

This place is a vortex of time and space, how do the possibly fit everything in the universe in a single building?? After buying a place in truckee I find myself here about 7,349 times a day, and I've yet to leave without finding what I was looking for.
Oh, and their staff is awesome. -

I'm a fan of their store, their stock but NOT their prices. WOW! I know that its a vacation destination and therefore there is a premium added to their prices; but gosh.......I don't wanna put their kids thru college.
They have a large selection that every hardware store would have as well as a wide selection of interesting decor items for your home. Their outdoor living accessories are great as well. -

Ace Mountain Hardware & Sports is a great store for everything. The help is the best. The hardware section is actually the weakest department in the store but it still is good. If you need hardware, cleaning supplies, fishing tackle, outdoor clothing, home decor items, bbq's etc Ace is the place.

This place is amazing. I wish they were in my hometown.
The staff is super helpful and, even better, they have enough staff to help you when you need it. You don't have to walk around for 20 minutes just looking for someone who work's there. When you ask questions they know the answer and go out of their way to make sure you understand it.
The store is NOT cheap. Some of the stuff is double what you'd pay at Home Depot but the information they give you will save you thousands on do-it-yourself projects and you'll plop down the extra dough without even thinking about it. Think Nordstom's or Zappo's but for hardware.
It's not a huge store but, somehow, they have everything I've ever needed. -

The prices are decent and you can pretty much find anything you need here.
Employees are helpful too. -

I bought a bar-b-que from these guys - a 22.5 inch silver-black Weber. It cost me $89.99. First Bar-b-que I've owned. When you enter this place, it looks like you could spend hours exploring the store. This is kind of an ecclectic place. It's a hardware story, but with a great sports influence; fishing poles, rifles and ammunition. The cashiers tend to be young girlios. Good experience.

I still see the same people working here since I first set foot in this store in 2004. You feel such a good vibe from the moment you walk in the door. My husband and I went in yesterday to pick up a bbq. Within the first three minutes we were greeted by several employees. The buyers have tailored the store to meet Truckee needs. There are all the typical things in a hardware store but they also have amazing shoes and clothes! Love to shop here!

Bear-themed decorations for your Tahoe abode? Check.
Snow shovel or play shovel for the beach? Check.
Need a couple of nails or a barbecue accessory? Check.
This Ace hardware store has a little bit of everything, and its jumbled, somewhat messy interior is perfect for wandering around and buying things you didn't know you needed or wanted.
The staff are super friendly and if you're a Tahoe Virgin, they're full of insider's information for local things to see / do / eat. For Tahoe Locals, they'll go to hell and high water to try to get you what you need if it's not stocked. -

If you're in my ski lease this is the store that sells the anti freeze for the toilets.
The workers there are knowledgeable and friendly. I said all of, 'where do I get the anti freeze for..' before the person at the register pointed me to the right place. I was in and out of there in 2 minutes.
On top of the other things mentioned in the reviews before mine this Ace has gifts/home decor stuff. I remember seeing a hand crafted 4 x 6 picture frames. Price tag on it was like $25 or $30. Not regular Ace stuff. -

This is truly one of the most amazing & perfect hardware stores in the history of the world.
Okay, "hardware store" is such a deceptive title. They carry just about anything you need to mountainfy up your home & your life. Guns & ammo, fishing stuff, car stuff, snow gear, rustic decorations for the home? They've got it. Hell, they've EVEN GOT the kitchen sink.
If I were ever to become president, my first act in the oval office would be to designate Mountain Hardware & Sports as a National Wonderland.
On top of all that, they're incredibly friendly & all smiles even on a day when they've got hundreds of customers freaking out about driving home through heavy snow. They handled all questions pertaining to snow chains with aplomb, & even let us borrow their phone to make a call (leaving your cell phones back at the cabin to charge is probably not a great idea).
This is a seriously amazing establishment. -

Great place. Has just about all you need at reasonable prices. The staff is abundant, friendly, and knowledgeable. I would prefer more hardware and less furniture, but that is my only complaint. Check them out and buy local!

This store has everything you could need while you're enjoying your snowy vacation. Last Winter I needed a pair of snow boots, and I was able to find adorable boots in this store. They have gift items, home items, and anything you would hope to find in a "country store." I love coming here just for fun. Is that weird?

This place has everything.
Bear or Moose decor for your 5000 sq. foot rustic cabin - CHECK
Snow Shovel and Snow Hoe - CHECK
Camelback and Cheezy camping mess kit - CHECK
Rain/Mud boots - CHECK
Shower head - CHECK
$150 rabbit fur ear muffs - CHECK
Various tools, plumbing, paint and other normal ACE stuff - CHECK.
I will say though, that my neighbor doesn't call this place the Jewelry store or Triple Ace for nothing though! I've dished out cash for something here that I knew full well could have been obtained for a quarter the cost if I wanted to drive down the hill. -

Stopped off here today in preparation for my upcoming Rubicon Trail trek. This place has almost everything. It's part camping supply store, part hardware store.
They have plenty of staff and they're super friendly. -

This ain't your grandpa's hardware store.
They have all the usual hardware stuff along with a great selection of outdoor wear, woodsy housewares, cabin-inspired decorative objects, gourmet kitchen and dining stuff and a coffee cart on the way out the door. And those are just a few of the things that caught my eye while I looked around for a little plastic sled, of which they also had a good selection. If I wasn't carting around a 2-year-old, I could have lost a good part of the morning browsing around in here. -

This little Ace has everything you need for your visit to the North Tahoe area. Excellent staff and knowledgeable about fishing and whatever gear you may need to catch the local fish.
Got a good deal on a small Shimano spinning reel perfect for trout for about $20, and they filled it with mono line for free.
Also bought a small housewarming gift and they offered free gift wrap.
Great service, reasonable prices, and really helpful and knowledgeable staff. If you catch the end of season sales you can also save a bundle. I got pair of North Face shorts for 30% off sale of $40 and saw a similar pair at REI for $46.00!
An anachronism of unwavering customer service in Truckee-well worth visit for your hardware and local fishing needs. -

Lake Tahoe
Glad they are in our neighborhood. It's Truckee; Northern Exposure south of the Alaska pipeline. A weird cross between a high-end tchotchke store (think bear salt and pepper shakers for $89.99), gear store for outdoor rec, and an old-school hardware store. Nothing is cheap, but it is convenient for your last minute hardware needs (think drain cleaner at 6:30 PM) and open 7 days a week. Sometimes I have wandered around for fifteen minutes, lost, and looking for something, without assistance, but as it is the only hardware store in a 45-mile radius, where else will you go?

OMG...when I had my home in Tahoe Donner I used to LOVE any excuse to drop into this store.
all the cool stuff...beyond the crap you need at the house (like antifreeze for the toilet and the ice scraper for the car I kept misplacing)...blankets and boots and mittens and shovels and pet stuff and bakeware and....and...AAAAAHHHHHH!Listed in: Did someone say...sale?

I don't know how they do it. Truly a full service shopping experience. I love the clothing they offer: Life is good, Columbia, Patagonia etc. Hats, Bags, sunglasses, home decor, fishing...
You think it will be an Ace Hardware, until you start through the door. Great service!!!! -

Love this place. Offers all the goodies for your rustic and not so-rustic Sierra adventure. Impressive selection of outdoor gear --fishing, camping, snowshoeing, tire chains, winter-wear and more.
They don't rip city folk off for wood for your fireplace. They offer a $5 bag of wood. I *think* it's the cheapest offer in Truckee, certainly cheaper than 7-11, Albertson's or Safeway per cubic measurement.
Remember --Burning wood is like burning money -- gimme the cheapest possible. -

Let's start with employee owned. That tells you three things: i) long term staff, ii) they really do care; and iii) they live and work in the community.
Exceptionally wide range of items, with normal ACE hardware plus a focus on mountain sports and living. Need the right fly for a specific creek - go here. Need a decorator item with pines and lake accents - go here. Need tire chains - well you get the picture. Don't miss the wide range of clothing, including the real stuff like Carhart and the trendier ski clothes.
You might pay a small percentage above the big-box home improvement stores, but really do you want to support the local businesses or spend gas money and time to drive to Reno and send your money back east.
Tourists, this is one of those spots where Hubby and Wife can both have fun and how priceless is that. Where else can the wife buy placemats with little bears and the hubby stroll through nails sold by the pound. -

This is the BEST Ace Harware ever, anywhere. The employees are always helpful (and yes... patient). It never fails that I go in for some small hardware type item and come out with some fabulous piece of clothing at a great price or shoes! Stop by and you won't be disappointed.

Who needs Costco (in Reno or Carson City (our closest) and a lengthy drive from home when you can go the ACE Mountain Hardware in Truckee?! And who needs 50 pounds of laundry detergent or paint when 5 gallons (or less) will do just fine. From light bulbs to Carhart jeans and socks - this fine addition to our community can take care of your every need. Plenty of parking and a staffer on almost every aisle to answer your questions or point you in the right direction.
If you are a mom, dad, contractor or just a visitor passing-through, ACE is at the hub of our town (adjacent to Safeway, banks, pizza and the pharmacy - and a hop off of I-80.
Prices are most fair and the smiling staff can't be beat. -

Truckee, CA
I have a love/hate relationship with Ace...mainly because it means I am in the middle of a project and something that I may not really want to be doing. Cause, face it, if you live in or visit Truckee, you want to be outdoors DOING something. Not inside trying to install a magnetic screen door so your dog can hang out on the deck.
But, they do have everything. Except the french door size of the screens...must order those before winter.
Their decor section is great...but a bit pricey. Hardware stuff is regularly priced. Don't like that you have to go outside to lumber/outdoor department and then go and pay...I always forget things because of it. -

What? No Ace for you? Ha I went in looking for a toilet and ran into my ex-mother-in-law. Speaking of toilets, she's quite a turd. Cutting to the chase, the staff here is strictly awesome. I was referred to the veteran employee eating a tuna sandwich and drinking prune juice at the back counter. I said, "I need a really powerful crapper." He had me with the proper turd shooter in mere moments. He was still munching on his sandwich as I waved good-bye and thanked him for such a magnificent shit flusher.

The folks that work here are great...love'em. Helpful to a one. And curtious too. As a contractor that worked in Truckee for 7 years, I highly recommend this hardware store. Prices are a bit high, but it's a small town and shopping here sure beats a trip to Reno!!

Super mixed on this place.
On one hand their store is really nice and the staff is awesome. If you ever have a problem with a product you bought there it's not an issue.
On the other side.... Enough is enough with their prices! Last summer I wanted a simple box fan. It was $45.00. Kmart had the same one for $12.99.... I can deal with a slight markup but three X? -

WAAAAY more than a hardware store! They have clothing, gifts, random ski gear, sunglasses...you name it. Everything from snow chains, to firewood, to gloves and boots, to decorative candles. You can even get keys made.

I've spent too many years in a place that has no garage and a huge stairwell down to the house. Though I carry two shovels with me in the car at all times during the snowboard season, I finally decided I needed a full fledged snow shovel for the house. I guess I've finally gotten tired of the hour digging in or out of the place on big storm days. Plenty of winter goods amongst other hardware store items. They even have this quirky espresso shack attached to the outside where the barista belts out Journey while he makes your coffee.

I've never been in an Ace Hardware with a collection of products as diverse as this before.
They have clothes, shoes, hats, home decorations, and then the usual hardware stuff. It is rather crowded and oddly organized, but that's what happens when you have everything in one spot.
If you forgot anything for your trip to Truckee, this is definitely the place to go. -

Truckee, CA
This place is crazy expensive and filled with fancy over priced made in china shit. Often referred to among locals as Gucci Hardware for this very reason. Other than the price, it is a nice enough store. The people are friendly and they have a large selection of stuff, especially considering the size of the store. More like a general store, an interesting combination of sporting goods store/department store and hardware store.

This place has everything shy of a locals discount. I appreciate the convenience, however if your buying any high dollar items or allot of supplies, especially lumber, your better off making the trek to the home dump in reno

There aren't too many choices when it comes to local hardware stores around Truckee, but even still, Ace is the place (...that's "with the helpful hardware man" for you young folk). Everything you could possibly need and super friendly staff - clean bathrooms too!

My husband prefaces me entering the store with "it's okay honey, this ACE is different than the others, you'll actually like it. It's a COOL hardware store." Um yeah, well I don't hate this hardware store, which is actually more of a REI meets OSH meets Pier 1 Imports, but I won't go as far as to say I like it. It does however seem to be a pretty complete store for all things needed in the Tahoe area. From fishing licenses to citronella or coffee it's got you covered. The staff was knowledgeable and visibly beaten up from all of the holiday crowds. The fishing department was overwhelmed and it would have been helpful if they had, had more than one individual to assist with the purchase of flies. Other than that I wandered around a bit and was amused by the trinkets but on further visits made the choice to remain in the truck.

This place is GREAT. The first thing I noticed when walking in was how nice the store looked, then how well stocked with a variety of items and finally, how helpful and friendly the staff was. I highly recommend patronizing this fine establishment!
