Hipster overdose! (This place is way too cool for me...)
The rooms: "big"! In quotes because you shouldn't expect the size of an airport Marriott. This is NYC, by the way.
The lobby: Constant hipster party - either with coffee, microbrew, or gastropub-type cocktails. It's loud, but then again so is NYC.
The staff: straight out of a Karmaloop casting call. Quite nice though.
The soap: on a string. -

So, you are leaving the comfort of Silverlake for an adventure in NYC, but where is a hipster to stay? Look no further than the Ace Hotel!
This place is hipster paradise from the dark lobby with an endless see of horn-rimmed speckled faces buried in their macbooks, to the owl accents and the messages on the stairs.
This review may sound like a sarcastic mockery, but I actually quite like this place and would most likely stay there again. Neighborhood is a little sketch though. -

I cant say which I like more, the actual stay or the little after work parties they do down stairs..
Downstairs =
A bar and restaurant..
The drinks are well made with cool zany rock and roll inspired names
There is also a restaurant on the side attatched, as crowded as it is, the staff was knowledgable and attentive, alert.. unlike sometimes when it gets crowded ive been to places where I see staff freeze like a deer in headlights and seem overwhelmed - the Ace hotel staff was calm and very " together"...
The music and the vibe is cool, they have a mini photo and art gallery as well, but speaking of photos- they have a vintage photo machine there! Super cool photo machine for this really fun cool crowd.
The Rooms=
I just love the decor. Blows the hardrock hotel out the friggin box
The french doors to the bathrooms and the old style tubs, the unique thought provoking phrases written on the mirrors. And the rooms have pop art from graffiti murals to abstract musical casette tape tributes.
The sound system and technology in the room is state of the arts.
All the rooms have turn tables, or guitars- just that extra cool touch that brings it all together in luxury and creative inspiration.
The rooms are very spacious, the hallways make me feel like im high out of my mind or in some psychedelic groove trip in the middle of some classic rock video.
Oooh Ive never had a hotel stay/visit that was comparable. -

YES, this place is the BEST! The feel at the this hotel is fantastic...the moment you walk in, you KNOW it is something special. The staff fits the vibe of this place and are great. When you walk into the the rooms you know you found the right hotel! The two bed rooms are huge...the single bed rooms are good sided for NYC...super clean and quiet too. Stumptown Coffee is on the premises too! You can not go wrong staying here.
The bars are vey hip and have a great feel, locals do hang out here. You don't feel out of place here. -

It should be called hipster hotel.
Entering the place, it was unclear if it was really a hotel, or some lounge that was called a hotel, but I found the desk to the right, and greeted by former barista from Williamsburg.
Speaking of cafes, Stumptown is right next door, and also next door there is a restaurant serving fantastic cocktails and fresh oysters.
The attention to detail is amazing here. From the note pads, pencils, the pencil sharpener on the desk, the magnetic do not disturb signs, the lamps, polaroid camera, bathroom fixtures, etc. The spaces are small, and retro, though they maximize it very well.
All I need to complete the vibe is a fire escape I can climb out to to have a smoke and stare into nothingness while a lone sax plays in a distant alley. -

The Ace Hotel exudes pre-fab cool. Hipster doormen, funky signage, breakfast in a bag (?!?), the list goes on: it's all preciously scripted to ensure you don't confuse your experience with that of a Hyatt or Hilton.
Strip away the facade, and it's a well-appointed hotel with all of the appropriate amenities: a comfortable bed, a good shower, nice furniture, a desk to get your work done, and great service. I'd happily stay here again. -

I didn't stay at the hotel, just spent some time in the bar, and ugh - what a dumb choice that was. I came here with my husband and a friend for coffee and snacks and there was almost nothing redeeming about this place.
The scene was oh-so-uber-hip, with its archaic anatomy diagrams on the wall and eclectic "library," but our waitress had a very blase attitude & was impossible to flag down for service. The charcuterie plate we ordered was nothing special (nor was the coffee), and imagine our surprise when we found an automatic 18% gratuity figured into the bill (for three people? Unheard of!).
Don't bother! -

This review is for the lobby bar at the Ace Hotel, which is a perfect setting for a date or hanging out with a group of friends. It's usually pretty crowded on both weekday and weekend evenings yet it still lends itself to an intimate atmosphere with dim lighting, couches and chairs. There are just as many people hanging around socializing over drinks as there are nerds on their MacBooks (I say "nerds" in an endearing way, of course). The DJ is pretty good and the wait for a drink isn't terrible given the plethora of patrons. Def one of my more favorite spots for drinks in NYC.

Uber trendy with hipster flair but lacking polish. I'll take prompt customer service over witty quotes on the wall anyday. Most of the time you feel like an intruder because you don't have messy hair and a plaid shirt on.
On my first day checking in, my room was 2 hours delayed (wasn't ready until 5pm), which made me late for a meeting. Then the TV wasn't working and there were items missing from the minibar (which I didn't use).
I get that they are trying to build a cheeky and casual experience but my impression of the hotel is that a rich kid invested some money into it, hired their friends and call themselves the next hottest place in town. I disagree.Comment from Graham M. of Ace Hotel 2/27/2012

I can't speak for actually staying in the hotel, because i haven't and won't. But I went to the hotel bar one night and the only word that can describe the place is the overused douchebag.
Gross.
The beers were WAY too expensive and the crowd was WAY too self-important. I absolutely hated this place. If you're into 24-year-old girls who still dress, act and talk like they're in high school (oh my gawww...like...can you even...like, believe what she's wearing?), and their boyfriends with too-tight pants and sunglasses on in a dark room, this is your place. Me? I walked a couple blocks down and went to Red Sky. Much more down to earth in both crowd and price. -

I've stayed here twice on business. Ace is a neat boutique hotel with a very "hipster" theme. The decor is sort of a retro-modern rock & roll theme- black accent walls with art drawn directly on them, vintage incandescent light fixtures, and stenciled / stamped style lettering in block fonts on everything.
The rooms are clean and staff is very attentive.
Given the younger clientele, the hotel can be a bit noisy. If you're looking for a quiet place for your family... well, maybe Manhattan isn't for you anyway. That said, I never had any trouble sleeping.
The lounge by the lobby is awesome, though the drinks are priced for midtown. My coworkers say the restaurants are really good, but I've yet to try them. (I have a fondness for the food in K-town, which is a mere two blocks away.)
Overall, a great hotel. -

Manhattan, NY
One of my favorite hotel bars. It feels like a school library inside, large desks and chairs, comfortable couches. It can be crowded but the music is not loud, great place to have a low key night, a few drinks, or small gathering. Ace- so cozy, so warm.

So I've seen the one in Palm Springs and I guess the original one came from either Portland/Seattle, so it was a pleasant surprise to see one of these hotels on the east coast.
The Conn man was staying here for 2 weeks while working out in NYC, so I had to come check out the city for the first time.
The location of the Ace Hotel here in Flatiron is hustling and bustling. That's fine...but the reason I couldn't give this spot a 5 stars because this place had taxis honking outside NONSTOP. I wish I wasn't over-exaggerating on that, but seriously, a weeknight and around 2am, honking will still outside our 8th floor hotel room. Oh goodness....
This place is a pure hipster's joint. I thought I saw a lotta weird looking mustaches back in LA around the Silverlake area but oh no...the 'staches were in full force here at this hotel.
The rooms are fairly roomy and the bed was might comfy. It would have been nice if the rooms itself had complimentary tea bags or coffee, but oh well.
The coffee joint downstairs, Stumptown and restaurant/bar, the Breslin, is definitely worth checking out. Hmm...those are worthy of their own yelp reviews :DListed in: First time to NYC?

This review is for the lobby and coffee service only, since I didn't stay at the hotel. Had a business meeting that was several hours. Met here, snagged two comfy chairs and immediately Adele, a nymph-like creature with an amazing personality and smile to match comes to take care of our coffee order. I had read an blog entry just that morning from Seth Godin, talking about the difference it makes when people actually CARE about the job they do. Let me tell you, Adele cared - and she took great care of us. It made the meeting that much more fun, and the coffee is delicious.
It's a bit dark in the lobby, but it is packed with people and gives off a buzz of exciting business deals being generated. And who doesn't want to have a gorgeous nymph bringing them delightful beverages with a brilliant smile?
This place rocks. -

This is a review for the Lobby Bar:
-love the drinks (especially the Rock the Casbah!)
-trendy without being pretentious
-decent noise level, but not deafening
-a little bit of a crowd at the bar, but very easy to get you drinks and then grab a seat an one of the tables or couches
-because of the layout, it can feel spacious and intimate at the same time
-perfect for the end of a night out with a date or few friends
(quirk of being attached to a hotel: have occasionally seen a lone guest on his laptop desperately trying to work in the middle of the revelry)
Always happy to come back here! -
Review from Ashleigh G.
I'm lucky enough to travel to Manhattan for work on a regular basis. Despite closer hotels to the business I have, my colleagues and I usually stay at the Ace Hotel and cab to our destination because it's such a more pleasant place to be.
I hate most of the chain hotels that cater to the business traveller. They're the same all over the world and there is no sense of place. At the Ace, you feel like you're in New York. This boutique hotel is located in Midtown, and is a vibrant place to stay.
Every room is different, and I always look forward to seeing which one I get. Due to the different configurations, I'd advise you to ask for one with a larger shower if possible. Some of the rooms have a small, half moon configuration that feels cramped even to 5'3 me.
The Lobby bar is exceptional and makes travel feel glamourous again, where guests arrive and sit for a cocktail and mingle after checking in. The Breslin inside is top notch, and also serves the room service. It's a favourite among New Yorkers too (where most hotels I've stayed in have sub-par food, having a captive audience of hotel guests). The Stumptown coffee is among the best I've had, and I'm a total espresso snob.
The rooms all have unique touches, and some are definitely a little twee. On my last visit I had a turntable and vinyl collection on one side of the rooms desk. And tweeting a photo let to many #LATFH responses. I totally eat that stuff up though, and found it fantastic.
And free wifi! More hotels need to realize that 19.99 a day is not going to fly anymore. -

I'm sitting in the Ace Hotel Lounge as I write this review...so I must LOVE it! If you don't do well with studying amidst noise, you shouldn't come here to study....but DEFINITELY to hang out :) The food options you have at this place are as follows: 1. Stumptown Coffee (pretty inexpensive with somewhat decent beverages/dessert), 2. John Dory Bar is pretty expensive (never had the food to comment tho), 3. No. 7 Sub (affordable, good eats), 4. BYOFood :)
Wonderful place to hang with friends. Huge comfy couches, dim lighting, Wifi, as well as a long table you can work at (if you don't mind waiting for a seat).
Enjoy! -

This is one of those hotels that would make me want to go back to that city again - just cause I want a night to chill at the hotel. It screams hipster (I might be one!), that I cannot deny. I adore the ambience, the people, the signages, the interiors, the entire feel. Very urban, young vibe which I liked - very different to your typical quiet, sophisticaed hotels.
The bar is a different story, though. Damn expensive!
But who cares, I can go to a bar a couple of blocks away and sleep in and/or hang out at Ace afterwards. -

Don't forget your macbook air if you are going to pose in the lobby. Conveniently they have waitress service so you do not have to leave your blogging. Pretty good coffee ( a little on the cold side). You also can walk up to the coffee bar and take it with you or walk up to the bar so you wouldn't have to wait for the waitress to find you.
Spacious with a generous amount of seating. A good place to wait for friends or hang out if you are staying at the hotel. -

Ace hotel bar-you're cool. But I don't like shady bartenders who don't tell you that tip is included, even in cash transactions. I've double tipped many times before realizing it. I know it's not a lot of money, but I feel tricked and I don't like that feeling one bit.

Simply put: don't stay here.
I'm in a room with a non-working heater. Sent two repair people rather than switching rooms after repeated trips to the front desk and calling over the room phone through course of day. Heater still does not work. Gave up and just going to get some sleep and get out of here.
Other thoughts: Room is dark, bad vibes, facing inner courtyard construction on another building. Even if the room is $250 in NYC, I've had much better quality here.
Skip the NYC Ace. On the other hand, the Portland ACE is doing something right. Maybe the NYC crew should take note of the Portland guys.
Update: Changing my review from 1 stars to 3. I would give this place another try after I spoke with management. However make sure to ask for a room not facing the dark courtyard and make sure your heater/ac is working, then sit back and enjoy hipster minimalism.Comment from Graham M. of Ace Hotel 12/22/2011

I've been here before, right after they opened so this is a follow up review. I'm going to review it based on a few factors that are important to me when I travel.
Bed: yeah, it's comfortable. lots of good soft pillows. If you like hard pillows you may have to request that.
Bath: Tiny shower with a showercurtain that follows you everywhere you go but the showerhead is the best of any hotel I've ever stayed at
Bath Products (i.e. freebies): no sewing kit (the ultimate in free shower junk) but ample shoe shine cloths, qtips, showercaps. You don't get individual products to use, they have refillable pump bottles (Rudy brand) in the shower. I use Aveda at home and this stuff was equal if not better than. and you get a rope on a soap for the sink.
Towels: Again, some of the best I've ever used. and they have wings + horn bathrobes for you too. Nice
Room size: It's new york. you'll be ok. i stayed in 816 this time and it was fairly roomy considering where you're at
Mini bar: one of the best things ace does very well. Tons of local or really cool snack choices, good beverage choices too. And prices aren't bad for a mini bar
Wifi: free. yeah!
Desk: Good size AND outlets to plug into, although the wall outlet had an adapater so you could plug 6 things in and it was almost hanging out of the wall
Security: use your key to use the elevator. a pain but reassuring.
Staff: everyone is SUPER friendly here and very willing to help. everyone is dressed in jeans and a tshirt or button down shirt...just like everyone else in the lobby but they will find you if you look lost so not to worry!
These are things that I look for, but if you're curious, here's some other facts that might interest you:
Lobby: Yeah, it's cool. Very dimly lit, very nicely furnished. At night it's a little bit of an all night dance party without the dancing or the party. Loud music and fairly crowded, i think with people visiting the breslin bar.
Shops in the hotel: Stumptown coffee (best coffee in the universe), Opening Ceremony (I didn't go in but you can check them out on the web) and Project 8 (really great little quirky shop. I picked up some souvenirs here).
Restaurants: The Breslin. i didn't make it but you can use the googles to learn more about them. -

Best place to meet friends you havent seen for a while. Lobby area and hambugers rock, and you can choose between a porckslap and a sidecar..
You cant take your drinks downstairs to the club which blows, but on the upside you can watch your girlfriend try to dance to hip-hop...

I must admit I love the Ace Hotel, away from the cheesy "boutique" area like Meatpacking and Soho, far from the shorts and new balance crowds of Time Square, disconnected from the Bowery, the LES and their corny Banksy/Shepard Fairey arty murals, some reviewers find it pretentious I find it exactly the opposite, it's dark, nobody bothers you, everything works and contrary to other reviewers I love a place where the staff don't constantly "check" on you about everything, you are left alone to do whatever it is you are doing but if you had a complain someone will promptly be there to listen, that's what I call a good hotel.

Review from Tiffany N.
Denver, CO
I never met an Ace Hotel that I didn't like and so far I've met 3 out of 4 of them. The New York Ace is by far the biggest out of the ones I've been too. It's also the most happening with the lobby bar, double restaurants connected, Stumptown coffee, and general number of rooms/guests. Just as many people have already mentioned the vibe of this place is definitely hipster cool.
They have a wide assortment of rooms you can choose from, everything from two bunk beds to large king sized ones. My room came with the luxury of a guitar which made me both excited and nervous - "Look, I could play a guitar!" "Oh crap. What if I break this guitar in the middle of the night stumbling around in the dark." Needless to say I put it in the furthest corner I could before leaving for the night.
Also, here's a little tip for you cool cats. I came to New York this year for CMJ. Ace Hotel partnered with KEXP to put on shows throughout the day. As a hotel guest you don't have to wait in lines and can always come in. So when Clap Your Hands, Say Yeah was playing and there was a line around the block I just came down via the elevator and snagged a seat on the couch. Ditto for Dum Dum Girls, Caveman, and a multitude of other rockin' bands they lined up for the shows. Now, that's a perk!Listed in: Oh hello New York!

Many reviews here are for the lobby bar and not actually for the hotel itself. It's on the pricey side but then again it was only $100 more than a main stream hotel, so very much worth every penny. Very central and convenient location.
We had a very nice stay here at the Ace Hotel. Stayed here for a few nights. All the amenities here were great too - see my other reviews for those. This is a cool concept hotel and attract the hipster crowd. In your room, you will find a Polaroid camera for use.
The lobby bar is a very popular hang out for local histers. You will see lots of Mac Books because WiFi available, oh and great coffee, cocktails and beer. They have a resident DJ playing cool music all day and night. Check out the Sunday night live music series. Events posted on their website.
Notable mention: It was December and had windows open as our room was so hot. Could not get the room lower than 71 degrees. They only have radiator heat and no air con. I don't think I would like to stay here during the summer.Comment from Graham M. of Ace Hotel 12/26/2011

This review is for the lobby bar, not the hotel.
I love that I can get hammered in a library-esque setting. chic library with nice leather couches and large tables, but library nonetheless. All those all nighters, wishing for a drink or five instead of studying or working on projects... my inner nerd is giving myself a high five.
Good spot for catching up with friends over drinks.. you'll still be able to converse without yelling. The lobby bar is huge, and my first thought upon entering was "why did I have to wait outside for?!" The wait wasn't long, but it was not necessary. There was enough space for everyone to spin around with their arms out if they wanted to.
Over all, love it once you're inside. -

Talking about the lobby bar here, not the hotel itself:
Lame. Wad to wait in line to get in even though there were hardly any people inside. Totally a trick to make people think it's packed. Don't fall for it. Don't be a human billboard like I did. I would've left if my friends weren't already inside. $17 for a Makers on the rocks. Pffff, haha! That's the last time I'm ending up in that bar. May the farce be with you.
Update: As it turns out my band was going to have a track on The Ace Hotel compilation record but one of the employees saw my bad review of the bar, recognized me from the band and promptly removed us from the comp. Haha, nice. I stand by my review. -
Review from Taylor B.
Over the course of the past 8 months, I have worn many hats to the Ace Hotel.
On my first trip to this hipster haven, I wore the happy hour at the lobby bar turned liquid dinner at the Breslin bar hat. While my recollection may have blurred slightly (perhaps due to time passing, but more likely due to the heavy pours of the bartenders), I much preferred the Breslin bar. Maybe it's just me, but I have a big problem with people sporting ratty sweatshirts and greasy hair whining about "the man" while downing $16 cocktails. Inside the Breslin I found a bar packed with a more mature (while still relaxed) crowd and bartenders who served up custom concoctions (albeit with a strong dose of attitude).
On my second trip to the Ace, I had the pleasure of dinner at the Breslin. While I don't believe in Yelping retroactively, the food - though all artery clogging - impressed me. I don't recall every item we ordered, but my friend and I shared about 5 dishes and not one of them left anything to be desired. (Full disclosure: we skipped dessert here and walked down the street to Gramercy Tavern for our last caloric indulgence of the evening).
More recently, however, I frequented the Ace as a full-time student, camping out with delicious Stumptown coffee while abusing the free-with-purchase wifi for hours on end. This spot gets me out of my apartment (where I have yet to master the art of productivity in my jammies) and into an environment with like-minded patrons with the same objective. The music rocks (think Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan) and the hotel scatters plenty of outlets throughout the place for those of us with computers (about 99% of everyone here) needing a jolt. Yeah, the hipster thing is still an issue, but coming here during study hours versus happy hours makes it much more bearable. If you're planning on getting work done, make sure it's nothing that requires bright lighting as it is dark, dark, dark in here. Also, if you're on a budget, you may not want to make The Ace your everyday go-to as one uber-small (though admittedly uber-delish) cappuccino ran me $6 and the half grapefruit another $8. -

Review from Neline S.
I've heard about this place from my friend who told me they serve some great cocktails but unfortunately, I was on a date and I had to behave myself and stuck to my classic and ordered a gin and tonic so I wouldn't get so drunk.
What's interesting about this place is they have Stumptown Coffee when you first enter so you can order some cappuccinos then head into a lobby where people "just hang out."
There are several leather lounge chaises and then a really long wooden table where people were drinking and watching the scene.
We were lucky and found an empty spot at the end of the wooden table to try and have a conversation but unfortunately, music was blaring and to the left of myself were 6 men doing shots and celebrating something.
They have a full bar and service is extremely attentive. The menu was American Fare but we ended up sharing a charcuterie plate. It consisted of 4 selections of meat and I only remember eating chorizo, flatbread and a small bowl of mixed cauliflower and olives. They had two spreads which went well with the flatbread. I also enjoyed the olives but it came after I ate the flatbread with the sweet spread on top to counterbalance the tastes.
Also, the crowd was extremely polite. I had my bag hanging at the edge of my chair and it managed to fall to the floor without myself or my date noticing until another gentlemen picked up my bag and handed it to me.
WOW! I am a lucky, lucky girl!
Overall, I can only comment on the service as polite and attentive. I would come back here with friends to enjoy the drinks. -

Came here on February 17th, 2012 and I will be returning ... we were treated quite well! the drinks are over priced but worth it ... after a few mimosa's and several drinks called rock the casbar, I headed over to the photo-booth which is right next to the bar and took funny faced pictures with the husband .. it was such a great date night ... not to mention the great little snacks they give while you drink ... we snacked on caramel popcorn, spiced almonds and chips! my kind of spot :) the decor is amazing!

This place is fabulous! Really kitschy and hip. I loved the trendy atmosphere. Quote frankly there are enough good reviews for this place to go by. The food is ok, I think they tried to be creative (not sure about success) The drinks were good and really you come here for the scene. Overall I had a good time. I would definitely go back if someone suggested to meet there (I would not come up with it however)

Review from Jon H.
Came here for late night drinks. Great drinks and atmosphere. Modern yet old-school, and I love that they focus on quality ingredients in their drinks. I was delighted to find individual servings of tonic water used in drinks (versus stuff from a fountain), mexican coke (sweeter cane sugar), and fresh ginger beer (for dark & stormy's). The prices are a bit sky high, but normal for NYC (about $14 a drink), and there's a paltry list of bar snacks to order up, but the seating is ample (lots of couches and big tables, almost felt like a library) in the lobby, and the service is fast. The restaurant looked nice and packed too, so probably will give it a try. The drinks are also super strong, so even though the prices are a bit high, 2-3 drinks will get you going pretty easily.
Not bad, no lines to really get in, good service, and high quality. -

I came here around five months ago on a rainy night in NYC. We picked this place to be our rendezvous point before we barhopped around Korean lounges.
It was a WEIRD night. The main demographic inside the hotel that night were people in their 40s dancing to EDM. I didn't want to believe my eyes, but my friends confirmed it.
It was exceptionally loud inside that we couldn't even hear ourselves through all our yelling, so we left -- not really sure as to what we just witnessed. -

Every once in a while you stay at a hotel that's different, Ace hotel is one of those places. It's a little eerie inside, I think it's meant to be an old gymnasium. Cool concept, not the greatest execution.
I was here for work and since the W in union square was sold out, I got to stay at the Ace Hotel. This is one happening place. The rooms are nice and big, but the setting is a little off. Only one set of elevators, and a gym in the basement. Comfy beds, would stay again, recommend if you want to try something different.Comment from Graham M. of Ace Hotel 10/27/2011

This place is not just for hipster,s darlings. We are 25 years too old for such a label and loved every little thing about our stay here!
The room was small, yes, but perfectly laid out, everything we needed was there, the only time it felt cramped was if we tried to walk around the (very very comfy) bed -- tight squeeze past the wall mounted tv. Bathroom was quite big and had very cool doors. All so very lovely, really! They even leave you a free laptop for use during your stay -- how great is that?
Yes, it's dark. Hallways, lobby, rooms, etc. I rather like dark, so I loved it. Let's face it -- the darker it is, the better we look... The esthetic is very industrial, functional, clever, tongue in cheek touches abound. For example -- instead of the requisite do not disturb sign, we had a magnet to slap on the galvanized steel door -- one side said "NOT NOW", the other: NOW. Get it?
Lobby bar is loud and vibrant at night thanks to the terrific DJ, but the moment you step into the elevator, the noise is gone. We had no trouble with noise in our hallway. Staff: delightfull all around.
Lots of restaurant options, from the wonderful Stumptown for coffee and pastry to the lobby offereings and Breslins. All great great great. Just go. You'll love it.Comment from Graham M. of Ace Hotel 9/22/2011

I really like this place. Good rates, great rooms, nice staff. I've stayed here twice and both times had an excellent experience. Can't think of anything to complain about!
