I'm all for helping local business, but as far as what I need in a hardware store, Ace just doesn't deliver. They do have specialized items that are hard to find at the mega stores, advantage Ace. But if you just need some wood stain , some deck sealant, or something of a general nature their prices are much higher.  And because they aren't frequented by customers as often, alot of their merchandise has that "bleached from the sun" look on the outside. I'm always suspicious of stores like that. Sorry, dear. :(

In this age of gigantic home-centers it's hard for a smaller hardware store to survive.  That's too bad, because when you just need a bolt or a drill bit a trip to Lowe's or Home Depot can feel like overkill.

Meanwhile, those mega-stores might not even have what you're looking for.  I needed a lock mechanism for an old casement window.  The hard-to-find Home Depot employee told me they didn't stock such a thing, and theorized that nobody would have it.  Zell's had it, and for less than $5.

And they have thousands and thousands of other things, too.  Plus, considering how much smaller the store is, browsing around for them is actually quite pleasant.  On many visits, in spite of going in needing one particular thing, I have explored every aisle, just seeing what's out there.

You might find what you need a few cents cheaper elsewhere--though I wouldn't miss the $1 bins if I were you--but you won't get helped as promptly as you will at Zell's.  

And even though it's location is tricky to get in and out of, it's easier than George's, and much less frustrating than the congested traffic around either the Home Depot, or the Lowe's on Archer.
