I can't believe some of the reviews about this store.  I have been going to home improvement store for 30 years and this store has the best service, best selection, fairest pricing and the shortest wait of any other store.  If you complain about this store, I cant imagine how you might feel at home depot.

I am continually surprised how easy is it to find things in this store.  I almost always find someone at the entry if I need to find something.  The people that work there are helpful and knowlegable about their products.  They dont have 2x4s or big sheets of plywood, but they have about 90% of the items that I need as a do it your selfer.

Today I am upgrading my review to 5 stars from 4 - despite the horrible snarl in the parking lot and rude entitled left turners who tried to hit me while I waited on the driveway apron for someone to pull out.

Not only do they have black wax sunflower seeds cheaper than CVS - 25 lbs for $15 - but I discovered two new things here today:

    1.  Adding chili powder to your sunflower seeds will discourage the squirrels but not the birds (we still need to see if this works!)

    2.  They have a birdfeeder for $22 that shuts off access to the seeds when  a squirrel climbs on it!

I'm all ready for those two punk juvenile squirrels who are messing with my finches.  Jerks.  Come and get it!

LOVE this store. The people who work here are kind, helpful, entertaining, and they remember repeat customers, who are treated like family. Their advice is always valuable, and they are incredibly patient with the "terminally un-handy," like myself. (Although with their suggestions and instruction, I have actually completed several DIY projects.)

I have probably interacted with most of the people who work at this store, and without exception, every one of them goes out of his or her way to find what I am looking for, even when I have no idea what that is.

This is a one-of-a-kind, disappearing gem in the world of "big box" stores, and they have my customer loyalty forever. The service here is more than five star. The garden center, a separate building a few hundred feet away, is beyond fabulous. Same type of knowledgeable and friendly staff, plus an impressive selection of plants and products. What a great business. Kudos.

A few years ago (ok maybe more than a few) this place was smaller and the amazing plant store was more secret. It's not a secret anymore but it is still great. Nice selection of healthy plants and a good place to buy garden herbs.

Can't go wrong, but can spend a little more than you may want if you are price conscious.  No lumber of other building material.

I go here for a combination of convenience and when I need knowledgeable advice on how to do my project.  In my experience , the staff in each department know building codes, understand how their products work and give good advice.  If they don't know, rather than lie or shrug you off,  they find someone on staff who has the answer you need.

They also have a  lot of stuff needed to work on the older houses in the area (my home is 100-yr old Arts & Crafts with lots of unique lighting fixtures)

They are not as cheap as Home Depot of course. To save coin, I tend to keep a list of crap to buy when at HD when I do have to go to that zoo.

This Ace tends to offer some higher quality products as well, quality that you might not find at HD or other hardware stores.

The folks in the nursery are really great as well. They've given solutions for managing plant disease and pest problems, as well has make great suggestions for new plantings.  Could do a better job of grouping drought tolerant/native plants together

I don't Yelp often and will only do so if I have had a horrifying or wonderful experience.  I would like to report that I had a wonderful experience at this ACE Hardware.  I am not one to shop at hardware stores and usually feel out of place whenever I am in one.

I was in the middle of an emergency last weekend and needed something assembled asap.  However, I did not have the parts I needed nor did I know what parts I needed.  I took what I did have to the store an asked them to help me put it together and get me the tools I needed.

The employee that helped me was so patient and clever.  We went through several possibilities on how to assemble my project.  He spent a lot of time showing me different options and putting things together for me.  He really cared about my project and was so patient with my suggestions.

I love, love, love this store and will definitely go back the next time I need something at a hardware store.

This is the local hardware store for my family. And it has everything I usually need. The service is top notch with assistants waiting in the isles waiting for us DIY'ers to ask all the dumb questions.
The garden center is a real gem in the area. Once again carrying just about anything you need with a very helpful staff.
The only gripe I have is with the ACE product line. Most of if it is cheap stuff from overseas. When I go in to buy tools and stuff I try to find the items that are American made which is usually right there next to the cheaper stuff.  But that really isn't the stores fault. Otherwise I would give five star

I love this hardware store.  Granted, I don't have much experience with hardware stores, not being a homeowner and tending to spend more time in Salon Shoes than on Aisle 7: Plumbing.  Prior to a few weeks ago, I'd really only been to this one Home Depot in Salinas, where I spent a good half hour comparing air purifiers all by myself in a remote corner of the store that was practically a mile from the checkout stands.  I don't think I ever saw an employee.

The Piedmont Ace Hardware is a whole different story.  I've had to go there several times in the last week getting things for my new apartment.  This place is very well staffed.  You walk in, and there are three employees waiting to help you.  They're so friendly!  Like I said above, I'm not very home improvement-savvy, but the people who work at Ace haven't treated me even remotely condescendingly.  Also, I love the return policy here, and how much they strive to make sure that you leave a happy customer with the right size aerator for your 1928 faucet with the worn-out threads.

Much like the tiny stores, in the tiny northern midwest town I come from, this place is reminiscent of times past and a reminder of what customer service should be.  I am the company's shopper at my job and choose to spend our money here whenever possible - anywhere from 1-5 times per week on average.  It never ceases to amaze me the selection they manage to stock in such a small store (everything!), and they call me by name as I'm running through the store on a deadline. Think "Mayberry".

I discovered my garbage disposal was leaking. Gross.
So, I made a quick dash over to Ace.
    Bought two slip washers.
    My bill was $.42.
    Yes, that's right; forty-two cents.
Drove home and made the repair.

I used to HATE this ACE because it never seemed to be open. Though closing at 6pm on weeknights is a little peevish to me, I can handle the Sunday hours, now that I know what they are (I know, like it's really that hard to look it up online?) Once I walked over from my street freakishly early to find a very closed store - apparently I just didn't wait long enough like the dufus that I am. I wrote it off for months after that.

Anyway, once I finally made it inside, I was in awe. One of the things I like about ACE is that it actually IS a hardware store, not a corporate mega-WalMart of home and garden supplies like Home Depot. If you need one wrench, you can buy one wrench at ACE, whereas in my experience, Home Depot and the like offer "sets" and "kits". Sets and kits give me a rage headache. Here I can happily pick through piles and piles of parts to find exactly and only what I need.

Customer service rules at this ACE. All you have to do is wander around looking like you've finally conquered agoraphobia and you will TRIP over people asking if you need help. This super nice guy yesterday helped me find a hole saw for my drill (yeah, that's right, my bad ass uses a HOLE SAW) and a two-way spigot for the gardening project that I will likely abandon.

The only weird thing is that the garden center is so far away from the regular store. That was a little confusing.

When I think of ACE Hardware, I kind of think of Tim Taylor from the good ol' Home Improvement Days and pretty much associate it with power tools, men, and useless garbage. BUT, today I was proven wrong.

    This place is amazing.

Went in for a can opener and discovered a whole new world of...stuff! This is where I am going for.. anything for my home - whether it be kitchen, bathroom, living room.... They have everything you can think of... and more! I know this is a really long week for me that I am getting excited over a HARDWARE STORE, but it is really kind of amazing. I expected to be in and out in 5 minutes but ended up for a while longer just marveling at how many useful and random things they sell.

A strawberry huller? Only one left. Turkey basting bag? Better get it before Thanksgiving! Glass tea kettle (so as to avoid some chemicals from metal kettles)? Check. Cast iron pans, griddles, etc? YUP. Dental picks? Yes. Key duplicating service? Uh-huh. Seasonal gift wrap? Si. Grout, glass bottles, colored 3M tape, artichoke steamers, duct tape wallets, candy, ice cream, different flavored caramel? Affirmative.... anddddd I'm running out of ways to say yes.

I just have to say that if I am ever looking for anything even slightly out of the ordinary, I have confidence that I will be able to find it here. Therefore, 5 stars.

The only negative is that it is a bit more pricey. Is $7.99 too much for a standard can opener? I kind of think so but for the convenience of being across the street from work, it was worth it (plus, I don't think it is that much more expensive than at other places...especially for one that works well). I'd say maybe like... a dollar or so markup.

Also: It is really nice but I would thoroughly wash everything before use, some of it is a little dusty... maybe because nobody knows that they sell so much stuff!

Okay, I totally believe in supporting the local business over the big box store and this ACE has the feeling of being your neighborhood store.  I want them to always be open, so my kids can experience that Mayberry feeling of the helpful hardware man.

The hardware  store is well stocked, I like the quirky unexpected things they carry too like books on Oakland History and stylish placemats.  The garden center is pretty good if you are jonesing for a plant fix.  BUT and here is the big but- there is a HUGE disconnect between the helpful staff wandering around among the plants and the snarly, mean tempered cashier.

I can't tell you how many times I have filled my cart with snapdragons or lettuces and rolled up to the checkout humming happily only to be greeted by this woman who seethes, anger literally oozes out of her pores.  I have tried ignoring her, I have tried joking with her, nothing works.  Now, when I see her I cringe and think about putting my plants back.  How can this store keep someone on staff for 10 years who so obviously hates human beings?

Ace is the place... takes me back to my youth... if they don't have it, or can't get it, it's probably not available... and then they'll tell you exactly how it works... or how to do it. Just think... a store where you don't have to buy three dozen of any one item...

This looks like a nice store, but we left without buying anything. On three separate occasions.  Why? The customer service sucks. This last time, three guys stood around talking about movies. I interrupted them to ask where I could find what I was looking for, and got a lazy ass, totally unhelpful response. Twice. Screw you guys, I'm going home.

Ace hardware has just about everthing I ever need for my home improvement projects and it's not a time-suck like going to Home Depot.  The staff at Ace are incredibly* helpful and know their store well -- they'll take you by the hand.  I stop by often and think their prices are fair plus they have the garden center.  I can't give them five stars because I am suspicious of their disposal practices of hazardous materials.  I returned a can of spray paint once (didn't have the spray nozzle) and the cashier tossed it into the regular trash -- we had a little chat about that...

*update:  I have to demote Ace after their paint guy gave me erroneous advice re: teak oil.  It turns out that the product I specifically asked about (with respect to fumes/ smell) was dead wrong.  Two months later the wood I treated still reeks...  The other demotion (from 4 star to 3) is due to two lazy responses to questions I had regarding some pretty basic stuff.

If I were basing this review on my first trip to the store, it would get one star. But I've been back a few times since (reluctantly, but I needed something and did NOT want to go to Home Despot), have not had a repeat experience as bad, and have come to regard this as my neighborhood go-to hardware store. That said, though it has all of the items one could wish for in a neighborhood hardware store, and at reasonable prices, I'm still soured on this place by my first experience.

    Basically, here's what happened:
I, who usually enter a hardware store something like a kid entering a candy store, headed to this Ace with my gf, who generally avoids hardware stores like the plague.  We were there to pick up a few simple things, and in the course of the half hour we were in there, not one but several straight male employees proceeded to hit on her obviously and repeatedly, in front of my face. To the point that they completely ignored me, though I was the one really checking out stuff - but as soon as she even looked at something on a shelf, a "helpful" store clerk would magically appear and be obviously overattentive. And, one particularly persistent male employee refused to leave us alone even after we both told him we didn't need help and my gf introduced me as her partner.

Simply put, if you're going to run or work for a business in a neighborhood as queer as this one, you gotta know that employees with an obvious "you just haven't found the right man yet" attitude are NOT endearing to your customers.

It's a damn shame, because otherwise I probably would really like this store. But running face-first into a wall of homophobic disrespect on your first visit really sucks.

Well-stocked and well-staffed. It has that old-timey hardware store smell of days past as well as most of the items that you would hope to find for home-maintenance needs.

I happened to need key copies during this latest visit and got them. Prompt, cheap, and with all the key-related doo-dads to tempt me while I waited.

The plusses: great staff that's been there a long time (deep knowledge, and just curmudgeonly enough); a surprisingly well-stocked store; decent prices.

Ya know, maybe, if you're someone who works at a hardware store and you see a lady standing in an aisle, obviously perplexed, it'd be nice if when she calls you over, you don't roll your eyes.

And maybe, if she asks you about a light switch and you hand her one that doesn't look at all like the one she's holding and when she tries to ask you another question, you don't just walk off.

Maybe all this is easy and second nature for you, but that lady is scared to death of anything having to do with electricity.  So maybe she could have used just one more question answered.  And maybe she hates not knowing how to do things; absolutely hates having to ask for help and feels very frustrated to have to rely on someone who obviously doesn't care.

And maybe, if you had taken just an extra moment of your time to answer her question, she would not have had to go home and chant "Lefty Loosey, Righty Tighty" all the while her hands shaking in fear that when she turned the electricity back on, her whole house would erupt into one giant electrical fire.

And maybe, if you had taken a moment to answer her question, that lady would have been so grateful that she may have baked you chocolate chip cookies as a thank you for your kind help.

    I'm just sayin'. . .

Excellent local large hardware store, with lots of roaming staff to give you a helping hand.  Prices are of course higher than Home Depot but that's a ridiculous complaint.  Good luck getting someone at Home Despot to help  you find that T-6 Torx driver you desperately need.  You're paying for service.

The only real complaint is that for every 5 super helpful friendly people in here, there is one crusty summbitch who will look for any reason not to help you or to heap scorn on you for your stupid question.  When that happens, I can go quickly find someone else who will be a little easier to deal with.   I know I shouldn't have to, but when you examine the alternatives, this place looks pretty damn good.

My favorite hardware store. This is the kind of place with a person standing at the end of all the aisles waiting to help you. And they don't badger when you want to just look around either. It's rare that I can't find what ever little thing I'm looking for in here. I've even bought and had a piece of mirror cut here for an old dresser. Their paint department is pretty good, too. Ace paint is good for the price. I love this place. Home Depot makes usually makes me want to smash my face into a wall. It takes an hour to find someone and then they have no idea how to help you. This place offers the exact opposite experience.

Nice trellises.  Nice plants.  so-so parking.  Seriously, the only thing I've purchased here are trellises, but I do eye the vines from time to time.  The trellises are cheaper than East Bay Nursery on San Pablo in Berkeley, and nicer than anything I've seen at Long's or OSH.  I can be found buying trellises here on the regular - whether it's to give vines something to hang on to or to sit on top of a pergola, Grand Lake Ace is your trellis source.  Since I know you were all secretly wondering where your next trellis was going to come from, I felt it was my duty to clue you in.

1st gen Scion xB trellis hauling note: you can conveniently bungee them to your roof and stack as many as you want on top, but if you forgot your bungees just flatten your front seat, fold down the rear, and you can even get a couple of the wider trellises in and as many of the narrower ones as you like.

I swear, someone is going to google "trellis" and "scion" and find this. :-D

EDIT: YES!!  When you google "trellis" and "scion" this is link #6.  Yelp,  thou art powerful indeed!

What a FIND in the Grand Lake area!

As a preface, I'm a teacher, and not exactly a rich one at that. I'm planning on painting my classroom to cover up some lovely graffiti art and a wall-size mathematics mural that blanket my history classroom right now.

I had the paint, now I needed the supplies.

I waltzed in, and almost immediately I had employees helping me find brushes, rollers, tape, and everything else. The store has a huge selection of products, and I'm not the most handy girl so I certainly felt lost amongst the paint chips and caulking guns. (I think nothing screams "I'm clueless" more than a girl on a cell phone with a blank stare.)

    But it gets EVEN BETTER:

So I saunter up to the cash register with my items that undoubtedly cost $75+ and I'm a little peeved. School districts and the government can talk all they want about "tax breaks" and "reimbursements," but at the core, teachers wind up shelling out a whole lot of money to keep the rooms in working order and the kids happy and well-educated.

As "Ernie," the guy behind the cash register, scans my items, I half-joke with him:

"Don't you guys have a teacher discount?"

He ignores me. It's been a long day, and I'm persistent:

"Well, you SHOULD have a teacher discount."

Ernie looks up at me, and points to the screen:

"Oh, I know. I took off some for you."

He does so with a sort of winking nod and I know that it's not common practice to do this. But I smile and look at the receipt. THIS teacher just spent $45 and saved $25.

And believe me, $25 saved to a teacher is something fantastic. (So Ace, get on it and make this a common practice!)

Great service and competitive prices.  I hate going to Home Depot, because even if you can find someone to help you, the staff know nothing.

Here, buying a staple gun took maybe four minutes -- staff are usually waiting to help you, and the checkout lines are short.  They also had a much better quality ceiling fan mounting bracket than the one at HD, for about the same price.

They also exchange propane tanks.  Grill on.

Overall, this is a great neighborhood hardware store.

Ace IS the place with the helpful hardware folks!  This is one of my favorite hardware stores in the Bay!  They are always willing to listed to my description of my issue, without laughing, and direct me towards whatever products will be helpful.

FYI - When it's girl scout cookie season, there's usually a table out front with girl scouts hawking their wares.

Service.  Seriously.  You walk in and in the first 60 seconds someone in a red vest will ask you if they can help you find something.  I come with a list and the staff literally walks me from department to department until everything is checked off.  One time I went in with a lamp that needed rewiring and I didn't really know what I needed, and not only did they figure out every little part, but the guy went into the back for a minute and rewired the lamp for me!  The total cost was something like $1.39.  And they're all so friendly and competent, you leave feeling like maybe the world isn't such a mess after all.

If your time is worth ANYTHING AT ALL, this is the place to shop.

    I LOVE THIS PLACE.

I know nothing about hardware, home improvement or anything else along those lines. I often go into this store barely sure of why I am there and I always leave a little more knowledgeable and completely satisfied.

The staff here is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The fact that they put up with my stupid questions is also a big plus. For example, one time I came in looking for those plastic things you put on the end of stool chairs...know what I'm talking about? Yea, I really don't either. I actually asked the worker, "I'm looking for those plastic things that go on the end of the stool that protect the bottoms" and magically he knew exactly what I was talking about!

Their selection is a lot less than Home Depot but you also don't have to deal with the crowds of annoying people.

The cashiers are a little less friendly but the workers throughout the store more than make up for this.

I'm not sure how their prices compare to other hardware stores but if you are looking for place with great customer service you should definitely go here!

Disorganization and chaos at it's Mom & Pop Shop best. That's what Ace is to me...narrow aisles, crowded shelves, but every item you could need at a big warehouse like Home Depot AND the employees are all seconds away from hitting retirement age, so they want nothing more than to show you pictures of their great grand kids, exchange a few friendly words and help you find the PERFECT paint thinner.

I may never go to a big home supply store ever again!

Hardware stores are really a hit or miss thing these days. Mostly miss.  I hate going to that giant orange store that shall not be named because their employees are idiots and don't know their products. Such is not the case here.

I went in looking for casters to fix an old chair I got at Urban Ore (see my review).  Every store is laid out a little different, but the first guy who saw me displaying the "where is it" look knew exactly where I needed to go as if it were his department.

The next thing I needed was a finishing oil. The guy directed me to the other department.  The guy there knew everything about the products including their subtle differences and uses as if he used them himself.  I realize he's in sales, but it seems like they all do their homework there.

    I love this Ace!
I have always been a fan of Ace but the Grand Avenue staff always have a laugh to share.
Personality plus and efficient knowledge of where things are.
Sense of humor seems to be a prerequisite for the staff.
Everybody makes you feel like they are working to serve you.
Maybe they would give lessons to the mayor and other public servants , so that we could have government Aces????  Yes I would want to be a bug on the wall that night.  Can I, Huh?????

Very helpful staff.  I got a nice showerhead, some tools, twine for a baby shower (don't ask),  pepper mill with steel parts (no plastic for me baby!), a fan, and I almost got a beautiful bamboo cutting board.  I hear they also have those nyc style shopping carts, which should come in handy on saturdays when I walk to the Farmer's Market...

I'm so glad I found it!  I'd rather roam around here than in the Super Longs in Rockridge.

Very good selection for its size and amazing floor service (there seem to be about 20 people working the floor on any given day).

The prices are somewhat higher than the BIG home stores, but the convenience and service make it worth it (though I still go to the big stores if I am buying a large ticket item, as I prefer to get a much better price).

Of special note is the Ace black Friday deal that has showed up in the past, which is a make your own sale coupon ... 50% off any one item.

The people at the cash registers are often not as nice and sometimes seem rather annoyed and short.  Nevertheless, if I am standing there I have already gotten what I came for (and received ample help finding it or getting the correct thing), so I do not care so much at that point.
