come here with your list of supplies and they'll help you find it or you can look down the aisles yourself. need something fixed but don't know what to get - you can ask one of the employees or the owner. they're all pretty knowledgeable.
i love these little small hardware stores as opposed to the big home depot kinds. its just more homey and personable. -

Great local hardware store. The staff is always curteous and helpful and if you have a question that requires expertise the owner is very knowledable accross a wide variety of topics.
Additionally, if a repair can be done with a $2.00 part rather than a full $30 replacement they will tell you.
They seem to have everything that is used in local homes.
Regarding the return policy: I have never had a problem with a return. They understand that sometimes you buy two different parts and can only use one of them -

If you live in the mountains as I do, Ace Rural Supply is your closest hardware store. Even though it's more convenient, I stopped going there regularly about 20 years ago because of the rude owner/manager and his petty, stingy return policies. I give them a try every few years, thinking maybe things have changed. Nope -- it's like time stands still at that store. Nothing changes. The salespeople and owner are unfriendly. Invariably the young girls at the cash register (under age 20) are unsmiling and if you try to chat with them they ignore you. I normally always go a few miles more to the Ace on Los Gatos Blvd, a much larger store and much more friendly, helpful salespeople. Just pull into the Rural Supply parking lot and look at all the warning signs posted everywhere & you'll get some idea of the owner's personality.

When can you ever go into a hardware store these days and find anyone who knows anything about tools, paint, chicken food etc etc.
Well, they do here! I love this store--always have. People know their business and clearly like what they do. A wonderful place to get advice and help. -

If you live in Los Gatos you have two choices for hardware stores, Ace-Rural or Orchard Supply on Los Gatos Boulevard. On several occasions Rural has saved my behind, the last being when my plumber with my assistance dug up and repaired our damaged sewer line. We ended up knocking out 3 sprinkler lines in the process which is pretty par for the course, It was 4:30 p.m. and I wanted to get these lines fixed ASAP so we could close the trench which would allow my gardener to get the sod in place. I wanted to avoid heading to either of the Home Depots, and gave Rural a shot, sure enough they had all the piping and fittings needed to fix our damage. I would give Rural 5 stars and I really like buying from a small family run business, but on every occasion I have visited them the cashiers have been pretty checked out as they wished they were somewhere else.
Personally I could care less as I imagine if I was 16-18 I would also want to be somewhere else, like on a beach in Santa Cruz. But, in case any of the Yelpers were expecting a very cheery greeter/cashier be warned. -

When I use to live in the downtown area this place was a jewel for me. I still go there from time to time when I stop by the post office across the street. The selection is surprisingly good. The staff has always been eager to help. At the checkout counter they always have some unique things I can use.
There is limited street parking and the parking lot to the side offer additional parking, which is nice for downtown. -

Rural Supply (aka Ace-Rural) is one of the hidden gems of Los Gatos.
We recently experienced this for the first time.
Last Sunday afternoon we were given a thorough overview on vegetable gardening. We came away with great tips from the staff that methodically walked us through the best way to put everything in place.
We ordered a watering/feeding trough for our above ground garden, netting and 30 bags of top spoil & potting soil.
Service is king in the world of small business - as a result we will be coming back to Rural for the long term.

Ace is pretty ok. They have most of what you need, though the store is definitely much smaller than your box gignormous hardware stores that now dominate the sector. This store is kind of the only game in town, and they seem to be suitable for the smaller home projects that pop up. They do have decent garden tools, but if you are looking for flowers, trees, and such, you are better off heading up to the Summer Winds in Campbell.
The prices are quite reasonable, and they have tons of staff per square foot. There must be some decent margins in hardware, as their labor costs much be pretty high. The staff is pretty young, but seem to be quite friendly and generally helpful. Dudes rooming the aisles looking to help customers find things, while the girls man the registers up front.
You can recycle batteries and lightbulbs here too. Much more pleasant than shopping at Home Depot. -

ACE Rural Supply is my go to hardware store when I need to replace light bulbs and have keys made. They carry feed, tools and even those cute Red Flyer wagons. What I like is that there are plenty of sales clerks throughout the store who always stop to ask if you need help. Prices are a tad bit higher than Home Depot. There is a small parking lot on the side and a few spots in the front but busy weekends mean you have to compete with a lot of other residents for parking. ACE Rural Supply is also family owned so you know you are contributing to a mom and pop business.
