Have you ever walked into Home Depot, and come out 2 hours later, depressed, tired, and glassy-eyed, overwhelmed by the mind-boggling array of faucets, door-knobs, light-fixtures, etc?
I have, and it's not pretty. Ace Hardware is the anti-Home Depot. It's small, friendly, and accessible. I'm always greeted by at least 3 people when I walk into the store, and as long as I don't require a large selection, I can always find what I need. I've gotten everything from white paint to tomato cages to African violet potting soil to ant repellent to furnace filters to salad bowl oil here. It always puts a smile on my face. -

I prefer the smaller stores, like Ace, to the large, impersonal chain box stores like big orange and big blue. You can find most things you need for your house or yard here and usually at a better price than the larger stores. Plus you can join their rewards program and earn money for shopping there.
