We recently moved to the area and in the past three weeks that we have lived here have been to the Ace Hardware Store in Alamo pretty much daily.

Each time no matter what we're looking for, what we need, help with a project, a product recommendation; everyone in this store is knowledgeable, helpful, provide outstanding customer service. They just seem to go out of their way to see that the customer has a great in-store experience.

This place is a true gem, so much better and more efficient than going to a big box store.

    Keep up the outstanding job!!!

    Thank you!

I had to go to this Ace Hardware again because I was looking for a pair of aviation (tin) snips that another crafty person had gotten there.  Here is the formula that will assist persons of the female gender in dealing with this place:  (i) even if you know exactly what you are looking for (tin snips, nail sets, whatever) look it up online first and print out a picture.  This cuts short the old gents' fussing that you don't know what you want, or you're not using the right term for what you want so therefore you're a silly girl, or you're going to misuse what you want when you get it, etc.  You just say here it is, where is it?  If they continue to fuss, you ask them to please just answer the question;  (ii) whenever possible, seek out a female clerk.  They are smart and helpful and do not get any strange Y-chromosome jollies from trying to make you feel stupid.

This building has been a hardware store for years and years. When Home Depot bought the Yard Birds chain and renovated the building a few years ago it was the worst hardware store you could imagine (they didn't even have basic lumber products at the store!). Since Ace Hardware took over the place they have restored it to it's previous excellence by carrying a great inventory of all the random little parts you might need to pick up for whatever weekend project you are working on.

I took off one star because even though they have a great inventory for a store its size, the prices tend to run 25-30% more than equivalent items at Home Depot. Not a big deal if you just need to pick up a few things close to home but if you have a hefty shopping list of supplies to pick up, the extra few dollars on each item can add up quickly.

The staff is also extremely helpful and friendly. I typically only need to ask for help when I can't find what I'm looking for and every person in a little red Ace vest knows where everything is in the story.

Well I don't like to talk bad........... but Keith, the manager, knows what I'm talking about! I sent Keith 2 emails and never got a responsce from him. I had numerious problems there with pricing and other issues.............
No loyalty to good customers here! Took my biz down the road!

    The tails waggin the dog!

(should be 1 star but I'm a softie.)

Terrible ... We all want the Must missed " Yardbirds" back .... where service and style was king ! This ace is objectionable at best and maybe it's how these Ace's are run , because the one on Mt.Diablo in Walnut Creek is even worse. I went to the alamo ace to get some paint for an art project I was creating . The staff , although seemed like they were trying , didn't know differences in paint, that I've found in places like sherwin williams... I had stopped at Starbucks in alamo , and since Ace is in the same parking lot , I thought they'd have some supplies I needed and I wouldn't have to drive to the Sherwin Williams store .... 1st of all , I guess because they are a small store or maybe its a convenience factor , their prices are way too high 2nd  their staff is marginal at best, and 3rd their parking is way too full.

I love this Store.  Selection is awesome compared to Home Depot in San Ramon and there is almost always someone ready to help you find stuff.  Also there is always a young guy to help carry heavy stuff to your car.  On some items they are a bit more expensive but generally the conveniencemakes up for it.  Way better than the old Yardbirds, which i stopped patronizing because it took so long to get adjusments on returns.

Ace Hardware in Alamo truly does offer fantastic service.

We came in today looking for a simple piece of plywood and a router bit.

Andy led us to the right aisle and helped us out find exactly what we needed.

    Quick, easy and painless!

I found the manager to be extremely unprofessional.  I called them because they made a mistake ringing me up and I owed THEM money!  He was surprisingly cranky and oddly defensive.  I'll never go back.

Alamo Hardware has a great selection of just about anything you'd need.

They are also one of the few Bay Area retailers that mix Benjamin Moore's Aura line of paint, and they also open later than other paint stores.

Formerly known as Home Depot and before that the forever missed Yardbirds.

What has just now become Alamo Hardware, also known as Ace, still carries a good selection of gardening supplies, plants, and flowers. I haven't been inside since the change of ownership but I imagine they carry all your hardware needs as well.

This review is based solely on the customer service in the outside garden section. I was very disappointed and feel that the customer service in Alamo in general is going downhill.

I have visited the garden section several times and every experience has been sub-par. Today I had to stand in line waiting to check out, in the hot sun, while only one cashier was working and taking forever to help people. There were only two customers in front of me. Meanwhile, I spotted at least three workers cruising around doing absolutely nothing - literally, smelling the roses! The Ace moto is something like, "The Helpful store." Well define helpful. Finally, as the guy behind me started to complain, I went up and asked if there was someone else who could help check us out since I'd already been waiting 15 minutes to buy a few things. Yes, 15 minutes which I confirmed on my cell phone. Well they got someone and I was out of there - 25 minutes later.

This is the problem with big corporations taking over local businesses. I have a feeling this never would have happened with Yardbirds. In all the 20+ years I had been going there, I never had this sort of problem. They really need to get more workers in the little check out kiosk.

I have been going here since we moved to Danville. Initially, we went to the Home Depot in San Ramon. I don't think I have to go into detail on why I won't be going back there.

The Alamo staff is always on top of it. They are ready to answer all questions and will actually point you to another store if they don't carry what you need. From the time one of their staff actually went out to my car to replace a license plate bolt before I had even paid for it to really impressing my brother in law, who works in contruction. They really impress.

Very helpful staff.  I was greeted and led to the product that I was looking for.  When I was confused about the products, the employee looked at the products herself to explain the differences.

This is pretty much the only hardware store around the area. Very clean and a friendly staff that is always willing to help you find what your looking for. A little steep on prices, but I guess it's worth the convenience.

Great customer service! Like many Ace's it can be expensive for some items but, on the other hand I've even found great deals here as well.  But, I come back because of the customer service!

I remember when this store was Yardbirds and thought it was fun because they carried other items that smaller or even Home Depot rarely carried. I was glad to see it convert to an Ace Hardware, as I generally like to support the smaller hardware stores. While there prices can be slightly higher, I'm impressed by the customer service inside of the store. I read the other review about the service in the Garden area and didn't experience that at all. All of the employees were very helpful, especially Robert. He went out of his way to help me out and make sure I had everything I needed before leaving the store. Upon checkout, I was greeted by a friendly smile and an inquiry in to whether or not I had found everything ok. I told her of my experience with an employee that helped and asked to see the Manager so I could relay my positive feedback on someone that went out of their way to help me. She asked me who helped me out and I told her Robert. She informed me that Robert was the manager. I was pretty surprised, given how humble he was and genuinely interested in making sure I was taken care of. Ace is the place with the helpful hardware man!!! I'm sticking with Ace. Sorry Home Depot!
