My girlfriend and I stopped in to have a drink and an appetizer, and found out they had happy hour on both until closing on Monday through Thursday!. We had the antipasti plate and the calamari.  The calamari was fine, but I loved the antipasti plate, with the olives, artichoke hearts, salami cheese and drizzled with balsamic vinegar.  It was a delicious treat at a more than reasonable price.  We finished off with mushrooms in a lemon garlic sauce..we will be back!

My wife and I decided to eat here based on Accurso's latest television ad. It made us feel as if we were missing-out on something special.  After eating here, we realized what we were missing was a better meal someplace else.

We arrived between 6:30 and 7:00 on a Friday evening and the place was pretty much dead. First red flag. The waitress was friendly and polite but didn't have experience working dinner service. She didn't know much about the menu items and didn't know when to clear the salad plates before the entrees arrived.

We both had the salad with house dressing. While the ingredients were fresh the dressing was an oil and vinegar mix that had no flavor at all and was disappointing. My wife's eggplant parmesan was OK, but not so good that she'd come back for it.  My chicken parmesan was overcooked to the point that the edges were blackened.  In addition, the chicken did not taste like it was fresh. I got the impression it was processed food - a fried chicken patty you'd expect to get at a fast food restaurant.  I'm not a bashful eater, but I didn't finish my meal and wasn't even interested in taking the rest home.

At any other restaurant, I'd be pleasantly surprised by the low price we paid for the meal. However, that evening I feel I got exactly what I paid for - not much.

My MIL was in town one evening without the FIL.  She's from a very small town outside of KC.  My husband asked her where she wanted to go to dinner.  She has the entirety of KC at her feet.  Where would she like to go?

    Olive Garden.

A little piece of me died when she said that, but I should have known better.  She's the lady who orders a hamburger everywhere we go and prefers the steak at a hole in the wall diver to Plaza III.  My husband and I joke about taking her to an "ethnic" restaurant just to see what she would order.

Unfortunately (Fortunately?), the nearest Olive Garden is at least 30 minutes from our house.  Darn. So we did the next best thing and took her to this well priced gem of a restaurant.

The food was tasty.  The accommodated my annoying special ordering habits and gave us a luscious basket of buttery garlic bread.  Though my MIL was less than thrilled with her lasagna, my husband and I loved our eggplant parmesan and pasta diavolo.

So, while it is no Olive Garden (note the heavy sarcasm), I really liked this placed and will probably go back.  It is more casual and less pricy that the OTHER italian place up the road, I think it was a great neighborhood place.

Hubby & I wanted to avoid rush hour traffic after an appointment on the Plaza ran late, so we called Sis and met her at Accurso's Restaurant for an early dinner (5:10 p.m.)  I love the space which is part glitz with glittery pictures on the wall and hand blown light fixtures and part old-fashioned family charm with a whole wall filled with pictures of various Accurso family members from the past and present.

We've eaten here many times since they moved to the newer space a few years ago.  The service is always good and I love the open window walls that bring the great eclectic Main Street neighborhood within sight.  During Christmas time, they have the whole railing which encloses the outdoor seating area beautifully decorated with crystal beads and white fairy lights and baskets of velvet red poinsettias.  Even with some heaters, it was really too nippy to sit outside but very pretty and festive none the less.  The crowning touch of the evening was the pleasant and talented trio playing music of the season while we enjoyed our meal.

I've left the mention of the food for last in this review because, to me, it is the weakest part of the Accurso's experience.  And it pains me to have to say this because I know they are capable of doing some things exceptionally well.  I've had a few things that were outstanding.  But many more dishes that I just wanted to be so much better than they turned out to be.  The Mary's Chicken Modega that I ordered this evening was an example of this.  Described on the menu as Charbroiled chicken breast topped with mozzarella and lemon mushroom sauce.  It was quite tender and moist, which was pleasing.  But I found the lemon sauce to be heavy on the sauce (that was thickened with too much corn starch or perhaps another thickener) and way too light on lemon flavor.  My entree was also served with a side of spaghetti and red sauce that was good, but served in a small bowl that I had trouble eating from (my problem, not the restaurant's).  Hubby, who is always on a quest for a perfect lasagna, said that the meat sauce covering his lasagna was sweeter than he likes and that the meatball was very bland.  Sis chose a plate of fettuccine from the $10 entree menu and commented after hearing Hubby's opinion that she generally avoids the red sauce but loves the Alfredo sauce dishes.  I tend to agree, as I have had several very nice Fettuccine Alfredo dishes on past visits -- most often paired with chicken or with shrimp or salmon.  And I did enjoy them very much.

I'm still going to visit Accurso's lovely restaurant space every once in a while, but I sometimes wish the kitchen could always live up to the challenge and make this the best Italian place on this part of Main Street.  It deserves to be... so I'll keep visiting and keep hoping.

Average food -  my yellow tuna pasta lacked taste, very bland.
The tomato sauce on the lasagna is VERY sweet
The atmosphere in the front of the restaurant is nice; however, the back leaves something to be desired.

If it's about the food, Accurso's rates right up there. I love them purely for putting amogio on the menu. Their sugo is pretty good, too and that's actually high praise.
Portions have been generous on my visits, so unless you eat like a linebacker you should walk away with lunch for the next day.

Now I'm another one who preferred the old Accurso's location, but only because it reminded me of eating at my elderly Aunt's house. Wood paneling and a vinyl red & white tablecloth WITH a hole in it?! That's charm that's been earned. I realize the decor naturally had to change to match the more modern space they now occupy, but it just doesn't convey the same well-loved, warm feeling. That said, at least this place is still alive and kicking. Jenny's in the North End used to be our go-to Italian restaurant and they closed years ago so count your blessings, right?

Myself, my boyfriend and another couple went to Accurso's for dinner last night (Saturday).  Upon walking through the door we were greeted by a very friendly hostess who took our name and informed us that there was about a 15 minute wait. Less than 10 minutes and a glass of wine later we were shown to our seat in the main dining room.  The main dining room is very generic as far as decorations go, but they did have some wedding and family photos (the Accurso family I'm guessing) lining the side wall which was a very nice touch.  Our server was very friendly and attentive, making sure to address any questions that we had over the menu.  At his recommendation I went for the daily special, Tiger Prawn pasta.  When my pasta came out I was shocked to see how darn big it is!  Angel hair pasta tossed with baby tomatoes, asparagus, grilled corn all in a tomato cream sauce with 3 big tiger prawns sitting atop the mountain of food.  The tiger prawns were exceptional, and the pasta was good, but it was not anything extraordinary for me.  I liked Accurso's enough to go back, but I will definitely be trying other Italian places in the area before then.  All in all it was a good experience with good food, but I'm convinced that I can find somewhere in KC that can top it.

First, the server was amazing, friendly, attentive and actually quite charming!  Beyond that...mediocre is the best I can say about our experience.  We started with my favorite app - calamari - it was okay, but certainly nothing special - and an alternative to, what even they describe as, "red sauce", would have made this much better.  Our salads arrived and I'm not sure who was on the salad station, but HUGE chunks of romaine on a small plate are just unexceptable, not only were the cuts to large to eat, the plate was so small it made it impossible to cut into more managable pieces.  My date had the salmon special, which was so unevenly cooked the edges were burnt and the middle was raw.  I had the seafood linguine, which, while better, was disappointing in that it was obvious the shrimp was frozen, the clams were either canned and faded into the sauce or were forgotten, the two scallops in the dish were acceptable, albeit a bit over cooked.

I wish they would get their act together and serve the kind of food their reputation suggests they are capable of creating.  Unfortunately, I've yet to experience the food that made their name here in Kansas City.

Going forward, I'll brave the wait and go to Il Centro.

It kills me to only give Accurso's a two star rating.  Only a year ago I would have given them a five plus star review.

I know I can't live in the past, but for this review, let me take you back to what I'm comparing my review to.  Accurso's sat up the hill from its current location.  They had been there forever.  It was a hole in the wall deli shop that started to serve dinner.  For dinner they threw on some checkered table clothes and added some candles.  The owner is a big, portly Italian man that I just wanted to have hug and feed me.  Comfort in all senses!  The food was amazing.  The diablo sauce...amazing, the Italian butter dipping sauce....amazing, the chicken spiedini...amazing.

Then the news came that they would be tearing down the building that housed Accurso's for all of these years and they would be opening up down the street in a new strip full of thriving businesses.  Yay, I thought.  A chance for them to have their dream restaurant and a new chapter to begin.

Well it turns out that I hate their new chapter and their dream restaurant.  The space is cold, lacking of character and charm and down right ugly.  It's like someone who decorates new homes in the suburbs came in and threw up their version of Tuscany all over this place.  The tables seem to float around a big open room and all warmth is gone.  The food, which has become very expensive, has also lost its soul.  It's good not great.  The wait staff has been lesser than mediocre and I have never seen the owner since.  For some reason we have only been to the new location on Monday's, but I don't feel like that's any reason for the food or service to be any less than any other night of the week.

I just want someone to hug and feed me......really good Italian food.  Where did he go and what has he done?

I hesitated to go to the new Accurso's after seeing their steep prices and hearing mediocre things. I saw that they were advertising new specials and lower prices, and decided to take the plunge.

The new location has a lovely open decor. The space modern and  unlike any other Italian restaurant in town, which I usually find to be too dark and antiquated. I was a bit distracted by the large TV in the main dining area.

We ordered a special portabella ravioli in a spinach cream sauce and the Italian steak. Both were well-prepared and delicious. The prices seemed fair, and we were quite pleased with a $20 bottle of wine. Little things, like garlic-buttered bread basket, make it special.

Overall, I don't have too many negative things to say. I'm giving it a three star review because I think it reflects the overall quality, good but not exceptional. I don't think it would make a good location for a date or special occasion like many Italian restaurants do, but it's a lovely place to go for dinner.

This is a must try if you live in Kansas City and want some good Italian.  Forget Garozzo's, Jaspers, and Cascone's.  The prices were very reasonable, the atmosphere is very nice and the live acoustic music was a welcoming addition to our already great experience.  Our server was extremely attentive and even included our 3 year old which most servers just ignore.  The food was outstanding, the sauce was some of the best I've had as far as Kansas City Italian eateries go.  I can't wait to go back.

I'm a walking endorsement for this place. Accurso's is God sent.

I think if Accurso's went out of business and/or permanently shut their doors, I would eventually wither away and die. It's just not right. I shouldn't even be thinking those cruel thoughts.

Once again, Accurso's has made me fall in love with food--not just Italian food per say, but the true meaning of valuing GOOD food. Any restaurant that is (most importantly) locally owned, can stay in business 30+ years, AND serves outstanding food constitutes an A+ in my gradebook. What more can I possibly say, their food is undisputedly outstanding.

And ya' know what, I'm not even a fan of calamari. The chewy, rubbery texture of squid makes me say no thanks. But someway, somehow, Accurso's has the ability to make that frown turn upside down, and I'm actually ordering their fried calamari--I get the strange feeling that I'm being brain washed by their delicious food.

And I will preach it over and over until I'm blue in the face. If you love Alfredo sauce, then make Accursos your destination. Their Alfredo sauce is muy perfecto. Never too buttery. Never too oily. Never too heavy. It consists of a velvety texture of rich flavors of Romano and Parmesan cheeses.

I should get paid for all the voluntary advertising I do for this place. I can't help it. Accurso's is like my home away from home. I can say without any reservation in my heart that Accurso's is my all time favorite restaurant in Kansas City....probably even the world.

The decor is nice and our server was very friendly, but that's as far as it goes. The night started with me ordering a grey hound, when I received it the bartender had made it with gin instead of vodka, each course took quite some time to reach us and the food was sub par at best. My mothers chicken Marsala had no Marsala wine in it, when asking the server what wine was used he replied, "red." Don't call it marsala if there is no Marsala in it; and my fettuccine Alfredo was drowning. Of all the great places to eat in the plaza this unfortunately is not one.

Really?  No review for Accurso's?  According to the Accurso's website this place is an institution!

Well, they also had a pretty good review from the Pitch, too.

I've never been here for dinner, where apparently classic Rat Pack tunes waft through the air as the owner makes the rounds and the place is packed.  I have, however, taken many a coworker here for lunch where their chicken fingers rock everyone's face off and there's no shortage of people coming by wondering what the smell is.

The only downside to this place is the service can be a little lackluster.  I mean, I came in once with a $50 order... act excited, get to know me, something...damn!  The waitress with the tats seems nice enough, but I'm a sucker for waitresses with tats.  It's a recognized disorder.

Support your local business, and eat up.  Tell them some guy on the internet sent you!

I've been a return guest with Accurso's for well over a decade. I loved the old location, but I understand the need to compete in the modern market, and the move had to happen. The new place doesn't have the feel of the old one, of course, but the new atmosphere comes with an incentive, and it's pretty serious. Accurso's now offers a five dollar lunch and ten dollar dinner menu during the week. I'm not kidding. Run. Now.

It's been a year since my previous review of this place...was there tonight for the first time since their move from their previous location.  My boyfriend always chooses it for his birthday dinner.

The food is still amazingly, amazingly fantastic.  The atmosphere of the new locale is not what it was, though, sadly, which was also a big part of our love for the place.  It's nicely done and lovely, but it looks like any other restaurant, now.  No real personality of its own anymore...too bad.  Can't complain about the food, though...it's still wondrous.

I had the opportunity to dine here on Saturday night. We walked in around 8:30 without a reservation, but were seated immediately. This was actually not my first choice for Saturday, but a place down the street (who doesn't take reservations), was pretty booked, and we were hungry. So, we were seated in the dining room behind the bar. My first thought was, I'm not sure what type of atmosphere Accurso's is trying to project. Very contemporary tall glass windows, white walls, pictures of Italian weddings and Italian children, tables packed in like a cafeteria and, a flat screen tv hanging on the wall. I thought the tv's were a great addition for the bar, but in the main dining room, it seemed out of place, and it was distracting. There is another more private dining room, with rich curtains, a wooden wine holder, and warm wall colors. This room is comfortable and inviting as opposed to the poorly decorated "main" dining room... Enough about décor, on to the food!
First off, our server was great. We tend seek out a dining experience, not just "food", so we naturally take our time when eating, usually enjoying a bottle of wine and great conversation. Sometimes this annoys servers, however, ours was very friendly and laid back. We started with a bottle of Chianti, (They have a nice selection of 20$ wines) and some calamari. The BF loves calamari, and he claimed it to be the best in town to date. That's saying a lot for him.
We then ordered our entrees, chicken spadini and Mary's chicken modiga. The chicken modiga was covered with creamy, melted mozzarella cheese, and was very rich. The spaghetti side was a nice touch. The chicken spadini was incredible. It was served over pesto fettuccini, which was also delicious!  Also worth mentioning was the side salad that came with entrees. We both opted for the balsamic dressing recommended by our server, and it was fantastic. The right ratio of balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Very yummy.
While I found the décor of this place questionable, the food and service were really great. I would recommend it.

Yikes..everything about this dining experience was a mess. We were a group of 11 on a Monday night, and the restaurant had patrons, but I'd hardly call it busy. The service was horrible..took forever to get our drinks (timed it a 35 minutes) and they forgot to bring our appetizers.  The garlic bread they bring to the table brought me to my college days when frozen garlic bread from Walmart at 3AM was an acceptable snack after a long night of debauchery. The salads that came with our meal were mainly composed of iceberg lettuce with some stale crutons, and the salad hardly had any dressing. The actual dish that I ordered, Penne Diavolo, was decent so I was able to eat that. They did discount the bill a bit which is why I gave them the second star, but I will not be returning here on my next visit to Kansas City.

Tuesday night featured $3.50 house wines by the glass, an extensive $10 dinner entree menu, as well as the perfect volume live jazz. I think I hit this place on the right night.  I may have been disappointed if I'd been made to pay menu prices considering the food was three and a half stars, the location/atmosphere was four, the service was a scrappy three due to our waiter suffering from TMI syndrome.  I think it'd be an easy place for  a weeknight, but I won't cry if I never go back.  Just eh.

This once charming little Italian hole in the wall has morphed into a corporate want-a-be.  This wouldn't  have bothered me so much if the service would not have been so bad the night that I went.  The waitress was awol.  (did I mention the dirty salad?)  To top it off she repeatedly charged my credit card too much.  Every time she tried to fix her error she made another one.  It was not her first night.  I really hope this place get's back to it's roots.  Put the owner back on the floor.  Monitor the quality of what comes out of your kitchen.

I've eaten better in New York. But so what. As mom and pop joints go in Kansas City, Accurso's is consistently good. Generally high quality ingredients, gigantic portions and nice preparation/presentation. The chicken dishes are excellent. All of the basic red sauce stuff is tremendous. Some of the cream sauces are a little thick and short on finesse, but even those are tasty. Reasonable wine list and decent prices. I'm a sucker for the old school knotty pine, red and white tablecloth, Chianti bottle decor, too. Accurso's has good food, reasonably priced with a friendly environment and service.

Accurso's is my favorite place for spaghetti in Kansas City, they have the classic red and white table clothes, and their salads are a big as your face, but some how manage to fit in your stomach.  The garlic bread is dangerously good, especially if you don't tell them to stop refilling your basket.  One thing I recommend other that the spaghetti and meatballs is the antipasto platter; an assortment of olives, meats and cheeses, make sure to bring your appetite or by the time you get to your entrée you won't have any room left!

I was so excited to come back to Accurso's after a brief encounter with their delicious tiramisu. Tonight, the family and I went there for dinner, and to be honest-- we did have high expectations. Although the owners and staff were very friendly and generally helpful, the food was mediocre at best. Portions were definitely generous, so an entree can definitely be split between two and both will be very satisfied. We ordered the Antipasta Chopped Salad ($11), Chicken Spiedini ($15), and Seafood Linguine ($22). The Antipasta salad was pretty terrific and fresh, but the two entrees were not tasty. The chicken spiedini itself tasted 'alright' but sat on a lifeless abyss of unseasoned oily pasta. The seafood linguine was quite literally drowning in heavy whipping cream and the dish was white as snow. I love rich, delicious food...but this was just fattening and lacking in any kind of flavor. For dessert we ordered the fateful tiramisu which had led us back to Accurso's. Although delicious, the tiramisu was miniscule. The portion was so frugal and ill-presented that we actually felt sorry for the dessert. We ate all of it within about 5 spoonfuls and agreed that it was delicious but lamented that there wasn't more. We'd heard from a waiter here before that everything (tiramisu included) is made from scratch in house, but unfortunately the food lacked flavor and thought. If you insist on going to Accurso's, I suggest ordering the tiramisu, but don't expect to share. It's a great example of what the famous Italian dessert should taste like, but the serving size is only one.
