I'm not quite sure why my everytime I go with anyone down to Santa Cruz, this is usually the spot they like to have lunch at. Maybe because they have a patio? Or perhaps it's very welcoming? The food is definitely good =]
I (and my party) are always greeted with the most warming host. With a smile and pleasant sound, they walk us to any tables that we want that is available.
Our waiter/waitress is absolute doll, they sounded patient and quick witted (they, I mean all of whom served me -and my group). They were quick with the drinks and the food (compliments to the chef on that too).
I guess this spot have been my #1 spot to have lunch at when I'm in town; I didn't even notice that until this moment.
Anyways, I definitely recommend this spot for peoples =] -

Acapulco is a place in all my life I've never been to. I've been going to Santa Cruz before I was born and just a little egg in my mama's belly. My friend said this place has really good salsa and he was right. But the rest of their food, not so sure. For some reason both my boyfriend and I, had to run to the bathroom after our meals. The food didn't make us barf or anything, but just kind of upset stomachs. But my friend didn't get sicks even though he had a cold.
Service was okay, not as bad as compared to other yelper. But I think my advantage was, we went during the day time when there weren't a lot of people out and it was a weekday.
I think I'm going to continue to stick to my usually Santa Cruz taqurias for Mexican. This place is just okay. -

This spot would have had more stars if it wasn't for the crappy service we received from not 1 but 2 different waiters.
We were seated right away and gave the guy (didn't get his name) our drink orders. He came back promptly with our drinks, chips and salsa. We perused the menu for a while, waiting on another guest to join us. When she showed up, he got her drink order and then we didn't see him again. We tried to flag him down, but this guy was evading us like we were the police.
Literally we waited for like 1/2 an hour before another waitress came by with a puzzled look on her face, asking if we needed to be helped. Uh yeah, we'd love to EAT here at this here restaurant. Might be nice.
So, after the confusion was cleared up, we gave her our food orders. The food was good and the portions were generous. I opted for the blackened chicken salad and he got the chicken mole. We both cleaned our enormous plates. Then it was another long spell before we got the check.
After she finally dropped off our check we were trying to divy up the bill amongst the 3 of us. She grabbed for the bill, asking if it was ready. When we told her not yet, she told us that she was getting off of work in 5 minutes, so we should figure it out quickly. Our guest was the first to comment, "Did she really just say that?" Yeah, she did. We got our cards back and watched as she parked her off-work-ass on a bar stool and drank a beer with the other staff.
We were here a long time. I shouldn't be in a restaurant this long if they are not making everything on their menu from scratch. The service was way too slow. -

I went here with my family of 5 on a monday night. The service was terrible! It took over 45 minutes for our food to come out! And the waiter did not come back to our table to ask for drink refills. In the meantime when we asked about our food the waiter seemed to have an attitude.
When the food did finally come out, it was pretty good.
Overall I would not come back here because the service was below average and food was average
Food was really good but service was really bad!!! The waiter told us he couldn't pour our margaritas because he rather us spill it then himself, since it Is our money! What the heck does that mean!!!! The food was pretty good. As a vegetarian it had a lot of options!! -

Santa Cruz, CA
I loved their wings and shredded beef quesadilla. During happy hour these items are only $5 and the quesadilla is def be enough for a complete meal. It comes with the beef and cheese inside and they provide you with sour cream, pico de gallo and quacamole so you can add as much as you want when you want. I go as often as I can, yum o!!!!!

Review from Callie S.
Great patio, strong margaritas, delicious chips and salsa, what else could you possibly want?
Tried the vegetarian burrito, wet style. About $8, well worth it.
Chips and salsa were the best I've had in SC so far. Margs are $5 normally, $4 at happy hour.
Can't wait to come back for happy hour, M-F from 3:30 - 6 PM. Super excited. -

The food was fine. Nothing special, nothing to complain about but nothing to come back for either. The service was horrible and rude. They made us feel so unwelcome. I'd rather go down to the dive Mexican taqueria by Cowell's Surf shop, because their food is worth going back for and they let you know they appreciate your business.

I would never patronize Acapulco on my own volition, but know people who really like this place, so I end up here a few times a year....
The positives: It's lively, and it's cheap. Happy hour is a good deal. If you like sweet [and potent] drinks, the Bandito is a good deal. The chips and (spicy!) salsa are great.
The need to knows: This is is a beer and margarita place - despite the fact that they listed 5 white wines in stock, the only one they had available wasn't even on that list. Can't comment on the quality of the margarita, as I've never ordered one (I always end up with a beer).
The negatives: The food isn't so great. Sustanance. -

We had the most inattentive, slug of a waiter I have ever encountered. We now understand why as he was telling the people at the next table that he drinks on the job as the owner is never here. He swore and said things about "blowing peoples heads off". His unprofessional, contemptuous attitude towards his job and customers was a real turn off and we could not wait to leave the restaurant. This guy was a real loser and should be happy to have a job.
Aside from him the food was fine, nothing special but his attitude just soured the entire experience. -

San Francisco, CA
Straight up tasteless, gringo style "mexican" food.
Yucky. This "huera" needs some flavor in her food so Acapulco totally missed the mark.
My whole meal was just horrible. Taco salad was bland and uneventful with big pieces of inedible lettuce cores, and boiled (?) chicken. Tortilla soup was so salty I had to pour half of my water in it. (As an aside I *love* salt, so for me to say something is too salty, it is REALLY too salty.)
Two overall stars are earned though for our milf waitress with the dimples and the flower in her hair. I'd love to bump into you in a dark alley. Meow! -

Santa Cruz, CA
By far the best happy hour in Santa Cruz. The key to enjoying it to the fullest is getting an outside table during the warm months. You can sip on well priced margaritas, beers and munch on half price appetizers! All this while watching the wildlife of downtown Santa Cruz walk by. If you read some of the other reviews on Yelp, the common theme is Acapulco happy hour. Dang, I've let the cat out of the bag.
This family atmosphere of this place really stands out. Everytime my girl Vanessa and I go in we feel like we're part of the family. We have one of Manny's famous raspberry mojitos, munch on some crab and shrimp enchiladas, and gone are worries of the world. And there you have it. Bliss at the bottom of the mojito glass. -
Review from Andrew W.
Once again I am in Santa Cruz enjoying the warm temperatures and helping friends move in. Moving stirs up quite the appetite, so we headed over to Acapulco per their recommendations.
I was super hungry, so thank god Acapulco gave free chips and salsa. The most unique part was the sweetness of the chips, not an overpowering sweetness, just a tad. Salsa had the right amount of heat. I think that we asked for a refill more than a couple of times until the food came out.
We built our own combos and ordered the the Dos Fish Tacos and the Grilled Skirt Steak. Combos consisted of beef flauta, tostada, and enchilada. All came with beans and rice, so we had a lot of rice and beans to eat. The best dish was the Grilled Skirt Steak hands down, no competition. Everyone at the table must have agreed because that dish was gone in minutes. The next to go was the beef flauta. I like them but wish it came with a dipping sauce. The fish tacos were okay but the tostada disappointed. We all left stuff and with three boxes of left overs.
What I recommend:
-- Grilled Skirt Steak (a must must try)
-- Beef Flautas -

Went here on a Sunday or Saturday a bit before 4PM with my boyfriend and a good girl friend.
We ordered a pitcher of mango margaritas. Super good!! It wasn't that strong I think.. but then again I drank about 6 glasses to myself and I felt a little buzz after we left. I think it could have been stronger though because the pitcher was $20. (I know El Palomar's margarita pitchers are stronger and I think they're $15 during happy hour.) But then again these had a smoothie consistency so I don't know if that affected it? But it still tasted good.
I think I ordered the fish tacos.. I forgot what kind but it wasn't regular. We all had different orders but all the portions were HUGE.. I think about $10-$14 for each of our orders. I think it was worth it. I was stuffed after drinking and eating so much.
I was looking around the happy hour menu and it looks like some good steals. -

I am a big fan of Acapulco, and it was one of the first restaurants I ever visited in Santa Cruz. This place has good drinks and great food. I am a big fan of there lunch burrito's which are MASSIVE. All the meat is seasoned and grilled to perfection.
If you are looking for a good sit down restaurant for mexican, look no further. -

Brooklyn, NY
Although hesitant to support Mexican food chain restaurants, especially in a town with so many higher quality, locally-owned taquerias, my friend and I decided on Acapulco. It was the happy hour special that attracted us, and the waitstaff's special brand of hostility and incompetence that drove us out, and eventually to the cookie factory.
We were greeted by a friendly young hostess--perhaps the most competent of the entire staff, which is saying something--who graciously fielded our questions about the happy hour pricing. The conversation went on too long for the male waiter, though, who, hovering menacingly, asked us if We were going to sit down or what.
We sat down. The male waiter brought us chips and salsa. The chips and salsa were OK. Then they weren't, because I found what appeared to be an insect's leg, severed and deep-fried. My friend alerted a waitress, who, after examining briefly the leg in question, said, "You know what? It's actually not as bad as you think. This is actually a piece of shrimp. It must have fallen into the chips." She brought us a new basket. We were both unsure. But we finished the chips, because we were hungry.
The chip basket empty, we flagged down the male waiter and asked to order. He was the waiter from the beginning, and it was clear he didn't like us very much at all. He said, "You're not in my section. If you had sat there"--he pointed--"you'd be in my section. But you're not." He walked away. We would have settled for the tried and true, "One moment while I get your server." Finally, an older woman appeared, smiling painfully, ready to take our order. I ordered food and a House Margarita. My friend asked for the Cadillac Margarita, and the waitress, taking down the order, said, "Liquid diet?" She laughed, and went inside. My friend, a woman watching her weight, felt insecure. What poor taste!
Soon, the Margaritas arrived. They were identical in taste and appearance. They were supposed to be different in taste and appearance. The price, this was the only difference. We felt, OK, shafted.
Later, much later, 20 long waiting-for-your-food minutes later, the waitress came by and asked if we would like more Margaritas. I said, "No, just the food I ordered." She said, "Food you ordered." I said, "Yes, the tamale." She looked at her order pad worriedly. It became apparent that the order had never been submitted. So we asked for the check and we left.
Our advice: Taco Bell over Acapulco. -

The worst Mexican food I've had, combined with lousy service make this a disaster of a place! Do yourself a favor and stay away. The waitress was rude, inattentive, and simply put, a clutz! She's not some 18-year old college student, but an older woman, who should KNOW better. She spilled water a glass of water on my mom, then a pitcher of water on my nephew, then giggled and tried to wipe it off with the pot holders she had in her hand. This dining experience was a total disaster.
The we had the chicken fajitas; they were overseasoned (very salty) and the quality of meat was awful.
They charge you for the chips, and tortillas which is another reason to stay away from this place. -

Santa Cruz, CA
such good happy hour ! (its from 3:30 -6) usually we opt for el palomar but wanted to try something different so came here instead and had a blast ! my friend and i came around 4ish and didnt leave until after 6 because it was so much fun ! the place is a little empty cause no one drinks that early but the atmosphere is chill . and i like the booths. the place is alot roomier than el palomar and although they dun have margarita pitchers for their happy hour, their other drinks make up for it .
we had the house margarita blended, a mango fruit margarita and the super strong bandito. it really packs a punch and just one of those was enough to get me buzzed. but we kept piling on the margaritas to go with the half off appetizers which were just alright. the chicken wings are like any other wings and the taquitos werent too special. I probably enjoyed the chips and salsa most food wise.
service was attentive and accomodating. like i said we spent almost two hours in there and they werent in a hurry to give us our checks or anything. def come here for happy hour and then bounce on over to el palomar for theirs too ! -

When your bill comes out to $60 you would think chip refills would be free...nope not here. Go to Olitas and get a $6 taco, margarita special..all the free chips you want!

Santa Cruz, CA
Pretty good food, and pretty nice environment. Good fusion of food between Mexican and American foods.
Outside seating is the best part about it, you get to feel the vibe of Santa Cruz downtown while listening to music from street performers.
I got the Chicken Club sandwich with fries, it was pretty bomb I'd say.
They give out their chips and salsa and refill them without even asking sometimes, which is pretty good service. Not to mention that their chips and salsa are one of the better ones out there.
Overall food and environment and service deserving of 4 stars. -

In the mood for delicious Mexican food? Look no further.
On a recent overnight trip to Santa Cruz (first-time visit for me), we were told to head downtown to Pacific Avenue to check out the stores, restaurants and nightlife. After walking for awhile, we decided to take a chance on Acapulco, which looked promising due to the large crowds of people enjoying their dinners as well as happy hour signs posted everywhere...one that was to start a mere 20 minutes later.
While we waited for our table outside, we had the luxury of getting a drink at the bar where the two bartenders took great care of us. My friends had michalata's and I had a margarita on the rocks. The margarita was okay, not the best nor the worst by far. They also gave us a few baskets of chips and salsa to nosh on which was great. Salsa=delicious.
After being seated at our table outside, it was such a nice night out, we all ordered another round of drinks as well as some guacamole to start. Definitely recommend the guac...so delicious. For dinner, I chose the Dos Fish Tacos (mmmm), others had the shrimp/crab quesadillas, a chicken super burrito and some chicken tacos. All very tasty, and the service is great.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone, it's definitely a great starting point before heading to the bars. -
Review from Nina M.
I would only come for Happy Hour & only if OUTSIDE seating is available!
Let me elaborate...
I only like outside seating because the restaurant is always musty and hot inside, no matter the season.
Happy hour? Well because the food is very average, the taco shell felt a bit stale. However, with 2$ tacos (fish are the best) & 4$ margaritas I will not complain.
I prefer El Palomar but since they lack outdoor seating, this is a good option on a warm day. -

Santa Cruz, CA
PROS: The Tostada Nachos - especially with skirt steak and jalapeños. They taste amazing. My boyfriend loves them too.
The Baja Fish Tacos are really good, the fish was cooked perfectly and all the other ingredients tasted fresh.
oh and... free chips and salsa... yay..
CONS:
I ordered their prawn burrito once and I hated it. The tortilla tasted old. The shrimp on the inside were cold and that just scares me, especially when it comes to seafood.
I service has always been good-- that is... until yesterday. The guy waiting our table wouldn't give us us a grande virgin margarita because apparently there was no button on his computer screen to accommodate such a request. (as if being under 21 doesn't already suck)
AND we have ordered this a million times before as per a waitresses recommendation.

Very good Mexican Restaurant! I went to meet up with a few friends in April. We ordered nachos and Margaritas and it was very delicious! My friend love her burrito. Very good for happy hour and drinks in pitchers. They are very accommodating and have excellent service. It has a great location too! It is right in downtown Santa Cruz where there is nearby shopping and bars. A definite place to go for lunch, dinner, or whenever you want a good margarita and a great time with friends. It is definitely a great start to an evening out!

Santa Cruz, CA
Before tonight, I would have given this restaurant 4 stars-- almost every other time that I've come the service has been great and the food matches. And I love the salsa, so from the moment that I sit down I'm usually pretty content.
But then tonight happened, and now I'm feeling that the future of my relationship with Acapulco is tenuous at best.
First, the hostess seemed none too thrilled when we asked to sit outside, and then didn't really seat us, but just kind of pointed in the direction of an empty table. I mean, I don't need someone to hold my hand and pull out my chair, but I do appreciate a welcoming smile, especially when I've got one plastered on my face. She warmed up a bit later (ish), but we quickly forgot about her when the suuuuuper awkward waiter came out. If he had been deadpanning when answering questions about the menu, he would have been one of the funniest people I've met. Except he was dead serious. Yikes. Plus, he also seemed a bit eager to get rid of us, as he dropped off the check right around bite #5.
And then our food arrived. In the past, I've loved their beans and thought the food had good flavor. But tonight everything just seemed a a little dull and uninspired. And my friend said that his meat tasted like hot dogs. =(
I still like the location and I love that they have outdoor seating, but I'm definitely taking Acapulco off my list for at least a while. -

What a fun time we had at Acapulco a few nights back with some new friends!! The atmosphere was pretty cool and layed back. The waitstaff seemed the know there stuff and they were very attentive. A taco salad, pork tacos and some other kind of mexican salad were had. No complaints at all. We will for sure go back to this place!!!!

I hate giving bad reviews, because I have to admit everyone has bad days.
However, I used to really dig this place. The atmosphere is nice and the food is usually okay. I really really like the Baja Fish Taco Lunch Special.
But I went in there today I got the worst service I think I've ever actually had ever. I ordered fried baja fish tacos, the waitress brought me these grilled fish tacos that weren't even cooked 100%. I took one bite and it was pretty bad. I politely asked her to return the tacos for the baja tacos i ordered, She actually argued with me about what I ordered and refused to take them back, or take them off my bill.
I was super upset, as I've been to this place a couple dozen times and spent a lot of money there.
I ended up leaving, they comped us, but I will never go there again. This waitress was very mean and left me with a bad taste in my mouth! -

Same name, but better than the Southland chain...
-----------
Time for some stream of consciousness...
Free chips and salsa, unlimited refills
Tasty tostada chip nachos (skirt steak, guacamole, sour cream)
Margarita was sufficiently strong
Prawn burrito had fresh shrimp (perfect amount of "snap" with each bite). -

I had a really hard time with this review. I ordered the baja fish tacos which I found tasty. The refried beans that came with tasted a little on the sweet side. Not sure what that was about. But my particular meal wasn't bad. Not great. Just not bad.
Why the uno estrella?
Because my 5 year old can't yelp for herself.
A couple of hours after eating here she barfed all over the bed at the Santa Cruz Hilton. Thank god for room service!
About an hour after eating here she started complaining of tummy aches. And then an hour after that a barftastic bed episode. The only other thing she'd eaten that day was a donut. I know, I know, say what you want about bad parenting, but a donut doesn't 't cause the barfs in my experience. Plus the donut was consumed a whole 6 hours prior to her lunch at this place.
She ate chicken nuggets and fries here. Nothing spicy. The chicken nuggets were dinosaur shaped and straight out of the freezer from Safeway.
For added 'evidence' that eating here was the culprit, Mr. Kelly expereinced the squirts in the middle of the night. That same night. He's pretty sure it was the result of eating here because he could taste the burn on the way out. Thankfully he made it to the commode and no room service was required.
For the record, Mr. Kelly had Chile Verde.
Why was I spared?
I have no idea... but thank God, Buddah, Ganesh, Vishnu, Chakka Khan, and everyone else. -

Don't go here. Don't ever go here. Go buy beer on the street and take it to McDonalds before you go here. This is without a doubt the worst service I have ever had in my entire life. I'm typing this AS I SIT AT THE TABLE we sat down at an hour ago. I have been served one beer, that it took 10 minutes to even get the order in for, and am still waiting for the food I ordered 55 minutes ago. This place is terrible. The waitress is AWFUL. Go anywhere else. For the love of whatever you believe in do not come here.

Aptos, CA
Enjoyable atmosphere, very spacious-although it was a Wednesday night... if it was crowded I'm sure it be a lil louder but not so bad.
They've a great selection of margaritas (which I love)...
I especially loved the blended strawberry & banana mix, It was excellente!
Read the Tostata Nachos Appetizer explaination carefully, because it is literally a circle of chips on the plate laid flat with premium tasty bites on each individual nacho... only problem is, they aren't like a regular nacho order that has mass amounts of everything on top...which is what I thought I ordered, that's the only complaint, the app was delicious none the less, just came as an unexpected presentation plate, rather than a fill-er upper. They were literally tostada nachos...which is LEGIT as well.
Food was just the same as any other Mexican food restaurant...however it seemed more high-end with the way their plates presentation was.
Our hostess was accommodating as well as our waiter was...we left with tequila warmth, full bellies and smiling faces! -

I stopped in here a while ago when I was wandering around downtown Santa Cruz. I was hungry after adventuring, and the Japanese sushi restaurant a few blocks away was closed until 5pm, so I decided to check this place out.
I was impressed with the fast service, and seemingly invisible water refills :) The dish that I ordered came out hot, and ready to be devoured ;)
I make it a point to stop in here whenever I can...the food is amazing, the prices reasonable, and overall, it's a fantastic place :) -

Berkeley, CA
Like a few others have sad, this place has some of the best chips and salsa I've seen ANYWHERE! A group of us one happy hour went through 4 baskets of chips (with salsa), and the server was happy to keep bringing more. Otherwise for happy hour, the pints are $3.50. It should be $3 imo, but the pitchers are always a good price at ~$12. The happy hour appetizers also are excellent, and quite well portioned. I know some places that give tiny appetizers, especially when they discount them.
The general menu for dinner and lunch is mostly standard, but each dish is made in a way that gives it a much more interested and good flavor. I can't put my finger exactly on why; maybe it's fresher or cooked better, but the dishes are much better than you'll find at generic mexican restaurants.
My only complaints are that the prices are a bit higher than they should be, and the tap beer selection is pretty miserable. -

Came here with a good friend of mine for first time. When we walked in, the young lady who was the hostess seated us by the door/ main entrance which, right away, I didn't like because of the fact that there was obviously other open empty tables around, and the hostess didn't even bother asking if the table was ok for us. They served us our water right away, and warm chips and salsa. And then we both decided we wanted to move to a booth table away from the front door, and we asked one of the waiters and he said it was ok so we did that! Lol! Only to have the hostess come right up to us and tell us that it wasn't ok and that we have to move back because our server has his own tables??????? I thought it was very rude, because she didn't even smile and seemed very irritated about it? I really don't understand what the big deal was anyways. So we refused to move back to the front door table and the hostess had to clear it up with the server! Whatever! When the server brought our food he just drop the plates on the table and didn't say anything. It was kinda like he was having an attitude that we moved! Lol! Anyways, we ordered the Garlic Prawns, and Crab & Shrimp Enchiladas. The Garlic Prawns was delicious, but not so much the Crab & Shrimp Enchiladas. Not a big fan of this place and definitely not coming back here again, particularly because of the poor unfriendly, unprofessional service, and the food is just plain mediocre, nothing special and the staff's attitudes just soured the entire experience.

Don't you enjoy it when a waitress tries to explain that triple sec and cointreau are basically the same thing. Me too.
Beans and rice and simple fare of the Mexican variety are just okay here. The true superstar here: bad service. Not even a try to do a decent job and fail sort of vibe. This evening was an almost laugh out loud, candid camera kind-of an event.
Good luck. Bring a flare gun to help gain the attention of waitstaff (might be effective.) and lot's of patience. So many other Mexican food establishments abound... why waste time and money. After all, the idea is to enjoy the evening, right? -

Stopped by on a late Saturday night. One of the few places that were still open and they had happy hour too. I wasn't hungry but I had a strawberry margarita and it was eh, but only $4.00 so I can't complain too much. Everybody else ordered food and they were satisfied. However I could smell the fishyness of my friend's fish taco. ICK. :/ Overall, the service could definitely have been friendlier, but the prices aren't bad. I never stopped by here even when I used to go to UCSC, there were always better places to go to...

Review from Jim D.
Two Acapulco restaurants in two days. I was in Santa Cruz with my brother and we were hungry after I helped him play landlord for his rental property. We ended up at the Acapulco in downtown Santa Cruz where they have the typical Corona beer signs, a pseudo thatch hut patio and other hanging mexican decorations. They have a full bar with a wide assortment of tequilas and mexican beers. Plus outside seating to people watch on Pacific Ave.
I ordered one of the lunch specials, the dos fish tacos ($11.95) which is two tacos filled with the cabbage, pineapple and a deep fried Mahi Mahi coated with a light batter. I was surprised because most fish tacos have that Gordon's frozen fish stick taste but these didn't. Tasty and flavorful. The pineapple salsa also added some extra zest. Chips and salsa are plentiful.
Acapulco features a full mexican menu...tacos, enchiladas, burritos, plus a nice seafood selection. Service was good, the food is better.
