I'm not big on chain mexican food places, but its hard to say no to an invite from a co-worker who is older and nice. After my first time I've pretty much go with her every few weeks.

This particular location is probably one of the last original restaurants in its shopping center which is also adjacent to the Del Amo Mall. I think the shoe shop on the back side is also still in business. Everything else was newly added maybe 10 years ago. Prior to that it was the Del Amo 9 movie theater (showing my age here!)!

The first time I went here I wasn't sure what to expect, but my co-worker Maria says they have an all you can eat buffet for $8.99 so I figure hmm that's not bad considering I probably would've spent more than that just on a lunch. The buffet is from 11am to 2pm which is a pretty good window since not everyone takes lunch at the same time.

They seat you in a separate area from the regular restaurant and its self serve with the exception of drinks. You do get a waiter who will bring you drinks, but outside that you're on your own buddy! Since my coworker comes here a lot they were quick to bring her a drink, however they forgot that I was with her. No hard feelings, but its hard not to notice two purses and plates sitting on the table. I digress.

There are approximately 5 stations you can go to. One serves two types of soup for the day. I recommend the pozole with a dash of cabbage. Mmmm, really good on those days when your sinuses don't cooperate. Another station has an assortment of diced meats and handmade tortillas. There is a station that has deserts, fruits and salads. Lastly, the middle station which has beans, rice, chicken and the yummy plantains! I don't know what they lace their plantains with, but I could probably go there just to eat them!

I think once you've gone to the buffet a few times you get a feel for what you like and what you don't. I typically get pozole, beans, rice, their chicken (not sure what they marinate it in, but its pretty good) and the plantains for last. I'm not sure how people are able to go back for more after eating that much. I guess I just wasn't built for buffets..!

Overall, the food is good, service is awesome and the price is actually is more economical than what you'd probably pay if you sat in the regular area. Granted its not "authentic" Mexican (and that is hard to define too btw), but honestly for $8.99 how can you really go wrong?

$9 for an AYCE Mexican lunch buffet! Yay!
Ever since the other nearby joint shut down, this has become the new alternate longerlunch getaway.

I like their variety and overall selection. They offer up two types of tortillas and two meats at their taco bar, which I appreciate because it's not just the typical steak and chicken. Al Pastor!

Other than that, I really, really like the Mexica sweet corn cake. I'm sure it's not so great for you, but man does it taste good.

They also have a small dessert bar, which was very decent. It's nine dollars well spent on top of a good parking (in the Del Amo mall area) + good & attentive service.

The food is good for Americanized Mexican food.  I like the lunch buffet becuase of the variety of selections they serve.  There is a taco area for pollo, al pastor, etc.  There is a area for sauteed vegetables, corn cakes, more meat dishes.  Pozole and menduo are standard.  There is a dessert stand with fruits and vegetables.  One item I would request to have that isn't available at the buffet is the flan, only becuase I like it and it's a great dessert choice.

    CSI TORRANCE
Incident: An extreme amount of food eaten
    Date: 1/24/2012
    Time: 11am-1132am

Arriving at 1144am, I met with the manager.  Said person, a male, was the first to be at the buffet, 4 seconds after the hour.  Several employees witnessed said person pacing outside and looking at his watch prior to the restaurants opening at 11am.  As soon as the door opened, said "Hello" he apparently bolted in and went straight to the large plates.

He went immediately for a large amount of carnitas yucatan, fresh tortillas, rice and beans, salsa verde, sweet plantains, and loaded up a full bowl of Pazole de Pollo (shredded chicken, hominy - add fresh cilantro, shredded cabbage, dried chili flakes, and oregano).

The staff at Acapulco had just cleaned/shined/buffed the place for the daily opening, and it was spotless.  Said person ate nearly half of the buffet.  The evidence appears very clear and untainted.  As several eye witness employees stated, all items were just set and full into the buffet area. It would be easy to get some good prints.

    I called for backup.

At 1147am: a nice couple showed up, and I was able to keep them away from the area of evidence.  I convinced them to order from the menu instead of the large lunch buffet (just happened to have a coupon in my pocket that I received from a home mailer).

At 1151am: The scene was secure, and all was under control.  But, while my back was turned interviewing the staff, literally a mob arrived (no, not Steve Buscemi & crew from Boardwalk Empire)...and headed right to the lunch buffet.  It was impossible to stop.  Both crime scene and evidence were disturbed.

At 1157am: Groans and mmmmm's were heard coming from most everyone.

At 1203am: Officer Brooks, my backup arrived, and agreed that we take a full and detailed description of each item reportedly eaten by said person.  It smelled and looked delicious.

At 1207pm: We ate and tasted reported items of said eater.

At 1215pm: I heard two songs in a row, mariachi versions of, "To dream the impossible dream", and "I've done it my way."  Beautiful.

At 1222pm: We concluded that said person has very good taste in selections.  The carnitas yucatan and the pazole couldn't be better, and the service was just terrific by a lovely, and smiley staff.

At 1242pm: I called HR, and suggested we hold the next staff function here.  It's great, and very reasonably priced at $8.99 for the lunch buffet.  Officer Brooks and I concluded in our filed report - excellent.

Plenty of parking. Right in front of Macy's and behind LA fitness.

    Prices: Decent.
Drinks - had the bloody orange margarita. Pretty good.
Food: Only had the chicken tortilla soup which wasnt too shabby.

I need to go back and try their food next time.

I really wanted to like this place but their food sucks! Not worth it at all. They lack in flavor and their service needs improvement. Makes me not want to eat Mexican Food again!

*** I wanted to also note that when I got my check and paid with the credit card I just signed the copy of receipt, and forgot to write in the tip amount because our waiter was standing there the whole time----LITERALLY watching me sign and fill it out. He then asked me "are you going to tip me or not"? WTF? *** I never had this awkward experience before...LOL! Yes, I tipped him even though the food sucks....but the waiter looked desperate. The restaurant was completely empty on a Saturday night!

I got a coupon where you buy one entree and get the second for $2.99...what a good deal...so I made a plans to come here with my friend last night.  We arrived around 6:00pm and it was packed...everyone was probably using their coupons.  We were seated right away though...but it was in the "cold zone".  Whenever anyone came in or out a gust of cold wind would come streaming into our area.

We ordered the Mexican Talapia and the Craveable Combo (which included a shrimp enchilada, arroz con pollo and a carne asada taco).  When the food arrived the talapia didn't look too appetizing like it did when my friend ordered it from the San Pedro location.  There was virtually NO mango salsa on this fish.  But the taste was decent enough.  The combo platter was O.K.  The enchilada and the arroz con pollo was pretty good but the taco was really really spicy for some reason.

Since we were using a coupon we ordered the butter pecan cheesecake.  It was alright...you could tell it was a frozen dessert but what can you expect from a chain!  So our waiter brought us our bill and did not give us the discount.  I told him about the coupon before ordering and he told me to hang onto it.  I informed him again of our coupon and he told me to wait and a manager would be by.  Wait we did.  It took like ten more minutes to get the coupon to be applied to our bill.  You'd think with so many coupons circulating that they would have a better system.

Overall, it was just O.K.  I would go back for happy hour or if I got another coupon but that's about it.  I did see a sign outside that said that their happy hour was now between 2-8pm Mon-Thurs I think.  So that's cool!!!

Chain restaurant processed food in a chain restaurant atmosphere, what could be worse?

I was dragged here by a friend whose 9 year old wanted to eat here for dinner because she ate here for lunch on a school field trip!  Believe me, I went kicking and screaming!

It seemed to be filled with people who were celebrating their birthdays because the waiters would all come out with a flan and a lit candle singing happy birthday in Spanish and then English.

The service got better after I started speaking Spanish with the wait staff.  We ordered a chicken fajita to split between my friend and I and the waiter brought out the fajita dinner with chicken, beef and shrimp!  Score!!!  Double score is that he only charged us for the chicken fajita!  Maybe he was apologizing that we had to dine here?

The fajitas were okay tasting but too bad they only serve refried beans and don't provide a healthier option like black or pinto beans.  How much more fatty and unhealthy can you make this kind of fare?  I look around and the place is filled with mostly obese people!  There were mostly grilled onions, no bell peppers or anything else and the pico de gallo was a tiny amount mixed with guacamole.  The chicken and steak were mediocre but the shrimp was gross.

My friend joked about me Yelping this place knowing how I hate chain restaurants and I told him that we Yelpers do review such places on occasion...as a joke!

Anyways, that's probably the last time I come here unless an account executive of one of the companies I rep schedules a meeting here and foots the bill OR I've completely lost my mind...

    Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Acapulco has been doing Cinco de Mayo specials all week and the day I went they were offering buy 1, get 1 free combos :).

I came with a friend and we each got 3 item combos (which turned out to be more than enough food for dinner +lunch/dinner the next day). I was able to switch the refried beans with vegetables and I loved having this healthier option. Among our meal entress, I really liked the chili rellano and the chicken taquitos. The chili rellano had a nice crispy batter that distinquished it from other chilli relanos. It was my first time trying the chili rellano at Acapulco and I don't think it will be my last. I also got the chicken taquitos and was fond of this as well. It was nice and crispy and had big chunks of chicken in the inside. Normally I see taquitos with shredded chicken but this one had big pieces of chicken breast cut up. It was nice. I also liked how there was plenty of guacamole on top.
The buy 1, get 1 deal for Cinco de Mayo week was not only an excellent deal but a super yummy one too. Yay!

Lastly, I loved how the restaurant got all decorated for Cinco de Mayo. The restaurant is nicely decorated with red, white and green streamers. It is very festive and cute.

Festive decorations and yummy food..can't beat that :)

My first impression: LOUD. I came here with my parents this past weekend and we could barely hear each other from across the table.

We ordered the guac and asked that it be made to a medium spiciness. I don't think there was any heat actually in it. We ended up combining one of the bowls of salsa with the bowl of guac to get the spiciness we were looking for. The food was, as the two stars indicate, meh.

The service was not so good. We had been sitting for about 20 minutes, snacking on the chips and salsa, when the waiter stopped by long enough to tell us that he would be back in a minute. Why not just finish what you were going to do and then come over to take our order? Or better yet, take our order and then go do whatever you were going to do. Tea refills were scarce and the meat in my mom's salad wasn't the kind she'd asked for -- but my parents aren't the type to complain, so she just ate it.

Definitely not my first choice Mexican restaurant.

It has been years since I have been to this location.  We were going to go to the Red Car for lunch, but the street faire had taken up all the available spaces.
So, in the interest of time, we went to Acapulco before the movie.

We got there during the brunch thing they have on Sundays.  We decided to go with that, rather than order off the menu.

There were no plates when we first came up, so I started with the chicken posole.  It needed a slight more salt, but it was fresh tasting.  I doctored it up with onions, cilantro, oregano, lime and crushed red pepper.  It was a good start.
My sister and niece got some orange juice, but because it had ice in it, it had been watered down, but they said it would have been good, if it weren't watered down.

The beans were disappointing.  That is a deal breaker for me, usually.  The rice was better than I anticipated, which was surprising.  It actually had some flavor and was fluffy.

The vegetables were good, steamed and a hint of garlic.  I got some potatoes, nothing special.  The bacon was ok, not as smoky as I wanted.  I got some chile colorado, but the meat was a bit tough.  The chile verde had a better flavor.  The pork yucatan was awesome.  I wish I had gotten more.  The biggest disappointment was the enchiladas (cheese).  The tortillas were a bit tough and the cheese was congealed instead of warm and stringy.  My favorite thing was the tomato, onion, cilantro, and lime salad.  It was so fresh tasting and a nice contrast to the heaviness and greasiness of some of the food.

The girls loved the desserts, except for the churros.

It is a little loud in there but that can't be helped.  Would be fine for kids.  They have happy hour specials and drink specials.

Not the best authentic Mexican food around, but it's always pretty consistent.  I know what I'm gonna get when I come here.  I don't ever eat here unless I have a coupon because I can't see paying the regular price for these plates. It's much higher than any Mexican restaurant around.  But with a coupon and for the money, the food is pretty good.  It's more Americanized (meaning maybe not as spicy and I doubt they use lard) so the flavors tend to be down the middle of the road.  But, you get a healthy size portion and should come away full and satisfied.

This restaurant is clean and the service is fast and friendly.

Just a heads-up that they have a great lunch-time buffet deal: $8.95 or so.  If you're in a glutenous mood and stuffing yourself w/ all-you-can-eat Al Pastor or Chicken tacos on fresh hand-made Corn tortillas sounds awesome, this might represent a really good value.  And you know we all get in that mood once in a while.

Al Pastor is definitely way overspiced and spicy, chicken will probably be preferred.

Rest of buffet is so-so, nothing too special.  A pretty good value.

But fair warning that I can't stop hiccup'ing since eating there at lunch today.

And the service is ultra slow.

Late Saturday evening, I was pleasantly surprised to be seated quickly. Chips and salsa (half a small dish) served quickly, chips were a bit greasy and too many small pieces (how does one eat the little pieces... with a spoon? throw that stuff out), asked for a second salsa bowl (with a friend, no sharing dipping items). Received our drinks fairly quickly but took forever to place food order. Lots of servers rushing back and forth, asked three times for more salsa, excuse me, may I have more salsa? Excuse me... ok, just show me where the salsa is I'll get it myself.... Brought us more chips, had to beg for salsa again. Eventually got the food, I had the special, three tacos.. forgot to tell waiter I wanted crispy shells (option, crispy or soft) and he didn't ask. Food was pretty good, vegetables actually had some flavor but served in an annoying little bowl. Chipotle also served in a little bowl, no spoon to dish it into the tacos... soft shells fell apart and dropped filling onto the plate, wet even before the chipolte. Tried to order a regular margarita, blended... no can do, they will blend a fruit or special margarita but regular margarita on come on the rocks.... I stayed with diet coke. Thought it was safer. My New York was rising to the surface.
Bottom line, the food was really better than the chips and service (they weren't rude, seemed distracted) led me to expect. I would not object violently if friends wanted to eat there again. Music not so loud you can't talk, clean and comfortable. Crowd was a tacky del amo kind of thing but well behaved (except everyone taking pictures of themselves eating at Acapulco (your peak experience this week?) flash in our faces, not the restaurants fault.

Let's start with this, it's a chain...which usually means average food and so/so service. However, my experience was better than the aforementioned stereotype.

My chicken fajitas were good. If you really want to make them taste GREAT, ask for the butter wine sauce (that's key!). I complimented my food with a strawberry margarita which was also good, but weak, they need to be stronger, but I guess I always have that complaint.

During my visit I had two little kids with me. The way they cater to kids is the saving grace. The kids menu has several items, my kids both went for the chicken fingers, which also came with jello. They ate everything, which speaks for itself.

My night was made by my server (Horacio), he was on it! Always a pleasant surprise when you get good service at a chain. I'll definitely go back, the food is above average, but most important it's a good place to take kids. We even left with two balloons which seems to go a long way with kids...

Great lunch buffet.  I usually don't care for Acapulco's menu however the price of the buffet and the choices they offer aren't bad at all.  I love the taco bar and the chicken fajitas.  They also offer a soup station (it seems to change depending on what day it is).  You can find menudo and chicken pazole here.

Yum. Good food. Decent prices... I really love it when there's a coupon for this place. 2 can eat huge quantities for Under $20.

Margarita Mondays will get you a margarita for $2.50, half off appetizers in the cantina area, and also, dollar tacos. It's a great cure if you've got a case of "the Mondays".

I think this place deserves better than 2.5 stars. Sure, it's commercialized Tex Mex, but some of the dishes are pretty good and you can get cheap margaritas even in the dining area on Mondays (hence the name "Margarita Mondays"). Granted, there's very little alcohol in these cheap drinks, but think of them as smoothies and everything's cool. Also, they regularly run ads in the mail and newspapers for buy one entree, get a second cheaper one for $3.99. That's quite a bit of savings if you pair a Sea of Cortez, for example, with a Fajitas Grande.

I was in the area after doing some shopping at the Del Amo Mall, I worked up an appetite but I was pressed for time so I decided to do a take out order instead.  First of all I was not impressed by the way I was greeted when I walked in. Second I tried to make small talk with the hostess while I waited in the lobby for my order and she just seemed uninterested. Ok I would see why if it was a friday or saturday night. But it was on a wednesday around 1pm,  I believed and the place was practically empty. Lastly when she brought my order out she just wanted me to get the hell out of there already and not go over the order with me which is her job to do so in the first place. So I told her, "Hold on let me just check and make sure we've got everything in here".  Like she got annoyed or something.  Whatever! I had a 20 minute drive back home you best believe my order  be done right, b/c one of my biggest pet peeves is when they f**k up my order.  I get home and I realized that the quality of the food is not as great I always remembered.  The value of the food wasn't  great either after milking me for $20+ for two Asada tacos plate and a Fiesta Salad. As far as service I'll just stick to Acapulco's in Downey (it's closer anyway), San Pedro or even Long Beach. But so long Acapulco Del Amo or whatever they're better known as.

Well, the missus and I ventured in here after nearly a year of abstention. I'm happy to report that the rude, barking manager was nowhere to be seen, and as such, I am raising my review from 1 to 3 stars. We're going to start going again, and if he remains gone, I may raise my review to 4 stars.

As soon as we arrived, we were seated in a nice booth.  The hostess explained the Sunday brunch buffet, but we chose to order from the menu.  The supreme fajitas were delicious!!  There was more than enough food for the two of us, and we even had leftovers!  Maybe it's because we stuffed ourselves with chips while we were waiting for our food - about 15-20 minutes.  Staff is attentive and there are a lot of them.  The chips were fresh and crisp and the lemonade was perfect.  It wasn't overly loud or crowded.  Service was quick and polite and professional.

This was our first time at an Acapulco's and I was very impressed!
