This place is really great!  My roommate brought me here because she claimed that they have Mexican food like we have in Oklahoma - legit.   So we went and shared the chicken fajitas plus chips and pico.  It was SO good!  really fresh - great chicken and the peppers were perfect!  The chips are freshly fried when you order chips and pico or chips and salsa.  While I enjoy the freshness of the chips they were a little too oily for me and I found myself drying them off with a napkin before I ate them but seriously they're fresh hot chips so who am I to complain.  We ate everything.  The fajitas are big enough to split plus they come with rice, beans and guac.

I will absolutely come here again.

Food was prepared quickly. Waitstaff was nice. The restaurant is basic but clean and
    low key.
The food was hot and delicious.
We had: chips & guac - outstanding. chicken quesadilla-pretty good, chicken was a little chewy, chicken burrito-very good.
Inexpensive, no frills, delicious, authentic mexican food.

One of Greenpoint's best kept secrets- from the fresh tortilla chips (they fry them per order) to the frosty beer mugs to the best breakfast bang for the buck (Crunchy French Toast, anyone?)... skip Papacito's and end up here.  Your belly + wallet will thank you.

Bonus: you can watch football games here!

I stopped here with a couple work people during a visit to Greenpoint. It was our first time in the area and we were so hungry so we walked into about 3 different restaurants without any preference. Thank God none of those places accepted credit cards because we finally ended up at Acapulco.

The waitress set down frosted mugs for our beers and was also helpful in answering our questions about the menu. My two coworkers ordered the steak torta and chicken tacos, and I had the vegetables huaraches.

Portions were huuuge and well worth the moolah. I couldn't finish my meal so I packed the rest into a to-go box.

All the vegetable dishes seem to be topped with guacamole, and while I love guacamole, I wish that there could have been texture somewhere in a dish of refried beans, hot masa, rice, cheese, vegetables, and guacamole.

    KABOOM!!!!

That's the sound of Acapulco being the bomb and blowing PapaShito's out of the water. Humble, nice people and delicious Mexican food. I grew up 20 minutes from the border in San Diego so I know it's my duty to complain about how you can't get real Mexican food outside of Southern California, but that's a load of bull. The food here is delicious, the staff friendly, portions huge and decor classic and classy. We're so lucky to have this in the neighborhood.

"Katie couric ain't doin this!!" - me watching Spanish today show while at Acapulco. while the anchors and audience play a scrabble like game that takes place in rounds and features sporadic dancing.

I do think Acapulco gets better reviews than it should because this is probably the first Mexican Diner experience for most white people- but I will let you know that it is actually a fairly average Mexican diner- I am Polish, not quite white, hence allowed to say that.

Anyway- I sprang for the Crunch French Toast with apples and Cinnamon ($6.35). The aforementioned "crunch" lies in the generic frosted flake esque chips which have been cleverly incorporated within the batter as well as being strewn atop the toast. Technically making it a threesome.

I do appreciate being Polish and being charged the advertised prices, unlike, eh hem, other Latino diners in the tri-boro area eh hem,  #polishracists

    THIS PLACE RULES!!!

    Breakfast is a MUST!!!

There are a lot of people here talking about authenticity, which I think is kind of funny because this place closes for a month every summer so the family who runs it can go visit family, presumably in Acapulco.

But I'm not one to care about Authenticity.  I mostly go here for breakfast...and I've been here for breakfast a lot!  isn't a "Mexican themed" restaurant like most, it's more of a family owned diner or super-deli that has a lot of Mexicany fare instead of American or Greek.

This is not one of those bougie Brooklyn brunch places that are going to leave you out at least 20 bucks and hungry.  Acapulco is one of the few places in Greenpoint where you really get your money's worth!  Maybe being from Syracuse NY are and not SoCal my restaurant specifications are a tad different, but the portion sizes are huge and you can have a tasty meal for around 5 bucks!  That's insane!

Definitely check out the "Acapulco breakfast" and the crunchy french toast!

The zany univision tvs can be a bit distracting but it always makes for good conversation.

they close for a month during the summer to take a break....good for them.

I ordered a pork burrito for lunch, and while I waited, I watched plate after plate of chicken go out.  I thought to myself why do people order the chicken if it looks so dry?  I returned to my office with my extra large burrito in hand only to open it up and find chunks of dry looking white meat!  I thought they must have got the order wrong because I ordered the carnitas burrito!!  I bit into the meat and sadly discovered this was their version of carnitas.  Lean pork cooked and then reheated on the flat top.

When I order carnitas I assume it is slow cooked pork that has been broken down and then fried to create a nice contrast of textures between the fried bits and the rich fatty tender meat with extra flavor coming from the caramelized bits.  Imagine my disappointment when I was served "the other white meat".

This place is the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of Papacito's!

Where they have the decent decor and CRAPPY food with lots of drinks / beer choices, Acapulco has a typical Diner decor, only Beer, and GREAT AUTHENTIC Mexican food!

Th Guacamole is really good, and the chips are freshly made. The Chicken and Steak fajitas are AWESOME and the Avocado salad is legit!

This a no frills place with really good food!

it is super cheap, and really good!

Think Jackson Heights good, but in Greenpoint!

If you want good Mexican food and could care less about decor and all the non-essentials, hit Acapulco up!

Best cheap food in Greenpoint, great for brunch. Food is authentic Mexican and is also great for groups. Beer is cheap quesadillas are slamming, and steak fajitas are a must try.  Breakfast is great but you have to get there before its over and on weekends it can get crowded but not crazy.

The service is great and to those who disagree I'd like to point out that its a diner but its also a deli, you may have to get up walk five feet and pick a beer outta the fridge yourself. Go to papcito's if you want schmooze with the wait staff and compare horn rimmed glasses.

The chips were freshly fried, the salsa was complicated in its taste and my stomach still hurts from eating too much.  Scenesterism was at bay and I rather enjoyed it being just a regular place.  For the few reviewers who listed the food as bland, I did not share your experience and if you find yourself in that position may I suggest you consult the bottle of Tapatilo that resides on every table.

Also - eggs w/bacon and all the fixings - $4.25 - uh - yeah.  Sweet.

    This place is great.

As you experience more places in Williamsburg and Greenpoint you being to realize that the more authentic and non-hipster places are the best bets.

While Papacitos has great food, they are expensive and and when they deliver the food always comes cold.

The food at Acapulco great, especially the fajitas! The best part is, you will leave with a leftover bag and tons of extra cash in your pocket!

The servers are a bit slow, but it's usually only one lady working the entire room so you can't help but understand.

My only gripe is they don't take card over the phone.

    Acapulco kicks Papacito's ASS.

Far better food at half the price? I say YES!

After much deliberation (the menu is GIGANTIC), I decided on a steak burrito with guacamole. HOLY MOLY. This baby was gigantic, and STUFFED with steak. I think most of the burrito was steak. TOO MANY STEAK!!!! The steak itself was well done, which I had expected, but was nicely charred and packed a lot of flavor. The guacamole provided some wonderful zip and spice to the burrito, which just could not stay in its tortilla home. It was super delicious and inexpensive- Everything I could dream of!

Carlos Y. ordered the Enchiladas Verdes, and I think the package weighed about 2 lbs. This was some intense delivery food. Covered in sliced radishes, the enchiladas were bright and tasty.

The salsa is a bit too watery for me, but is vibrant, spicy and refreshing. Dip that warm, home made chip in some chunky, flavorful guac, relax, and let the PMS fly out the door...

Having lived in the Mission District of San Francisco, I was spoiled daily with phenomenal Mexican food at every turn. The east coast is an ENTIRELY different story. You can imagine my delight, then, when I discovered Acapulco in my very own neighborhood! With it's red, white, and green awning, Acapulco looks like just about every other run-of-the-mill Mexican/Latin food restaurant. However, the food you'll find there is delicious, authentic, and cheap.

You should not miss their fresh chips and salsa! I have yet to try their guacamole, but I cannot rave enough about their chips and salsa. The chips are the epitome of deep fried salted corn goodness that is matched perfectly by the fresh, zesty salsa, the complex flavors and spice of which put the tomato-y, chunky crap that other restaurants serve to shame!

I'm loving this place. Completely unassuming from the outside and modest inside, this little Mexican joint should please those who can't seem to find good Mexican fare around town (for some reason, it's a big feat in this city). It has the feel of a diner, complete with counter and stools, and the crowd will remind you that you are in the terrain of artists. No Williamsburg-esque attitude though (i.e. they're actual artists).

Great place for weekend brunch - relaxed, cheap and yummy. I'm addicted to the cheese enchiladas, although the huevos rancheros are excellent, as are the nachos (if you must they offer regular diner fare as well). You can easily leave this place pleasantly full for under 10 bucks. Service can get a little slow when they are packed, but you'll quickly forget once the food arrives.

The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't excellent.  I would come back if I was in the neighborhood.

I ordered the vegetable huaraches and my friend ordered the carnitas tacos.  My huaraches was a bit bland, but the vegetables were fresh and I enjoyed the texture of the corn meal.  The staff is really nice and the prices are very reasonable.  Including tax, for the two of us, it was only $12.

Ok, so this place scores on atmosphere, but not much else.  Two reasons:

    1.  Totally not authentic, despite being divey, which is weird.  Never in my Texan life have I seen a Mexican omelet with broccoli in it.  Gross, gross.  And if you want a mexican sandwich, better to go to the Franklin Corner Deli.

    2.  More importantly, they have a problem with COUNTERFEIT MONEY.  I kid you not.  They gave me a fake $10 bill, which I found out when I tried to use it at Greenpoint Fruits and Deli, and when I came back they admitted it was fake.  The guy at Fruits and Deli confirmed this has happened to him several times with money from Acapulco.  So watch out!

As you wander down Greenpoint Avenue in decreasing alphabetical order (and increasing stench), it's easy to lose faith in your boyfriend's idea of great date.

The Acapulco proves you can still trust him.

Yes, the lights are flourescent.  Yes, if you sit too close to the door, you may have to shout over the Telemundo.  But isn't the kind of authenticity today's hipsters love?  Just thinking about those plastic tablecloths tempts me to tattoo the word "Genuine" on my ass.

Granted, if you're from the West Coast, this is no big deal. When I praise the Acapulco, I am speaking more to the huddled masses of natives who yearn to breathe free of overpriced Mexican prepared by Asians.

If you're a New Yorker, you should be impressed with the unadulterated goodness (and rock-bottom prices) of the guacamole burrito here.

Note: the  vegetarian burrito is full of sauteed vegetables, including broccoli.  Not my taste, unless you're really craving an extra dose of vitamins, or feel guilty about having eaten the delightfully unhealthy, "Crunchy French Toast."

You have to love the dive vibe. I do, and next time I'm going to sit at the counter like I did when i was a kid with my dad. The atmosphere is seriously great and relaxed. I never imagined a Mexican diner, but here it is in all of its glory. The menu is huge (will have to go back a whole lot to try everything) and the service was diner relaxed and competent. Loved the huge beer and soda selection (am a sucker for Jarritos delicious liquid candy).

The chips were intense - thick, crunchy and hot out of the fryer - and maybe too greasy. Salsa was tasty. Burrito, however,  was a bit of a letdown. Like a lot of people have said, it's broccoli heavy and a bit bland. Would have loved some tofu or fake meat. I don't want to overstate the badness - i ate the hell out of it - but it wasn't my fav in the neighborhood. Have to get back for the corn flake French toast tho....

This place closed down for a while (I think it had to do with them hiring illegals), but it's once again open for business. I live directly across the street, so I've been to this place a number of times and was looking forward to making it a regular stop.

Unfortunately, the moderately-priced, mediocre food is overshadowed by the surprisingly inept and disdainful staff. I've never seen the head server smile, and she barely even manages to make eye contact with customers. She regularly writes down wrong orders and even forgets some items. I've sat and waited for 15 minutes in an almost empty restaurant before she even offered to bring a glass of water, let alone take our orders. I've never seen this place really busy, but it must be a madhouse if they can't handle 3 tables at once.

The food is subpar, but relatively fresh. The chips and guacamole are the best thing on the menu, but expect everything else to be missing something. That something is usually salt. In the case of the burgers, the juices are squeezed out onto the grill -leaving it dry and bland (not to mention that they refuse to dress your burger for you, so if you're on the go you'd better like your burger plain). Their coleslaw is disgusting and completely overpowered by horseradish. The Mexican food is ok, but doesn't even come close to Papacitos (THE Greenpoint restaurant), just a few blocks away.

But none of these things made me decide to never return. The incident was over some simple eggs. I asked them to be cooked a certain way and they weren't. When I told the server, she forced ME to confront the COOK with it (there's no one I would call a "chef" that works there). The cook insulted me by turning his back on me and refusing to make what I ordered. The server, who seemed like she could care less, offered to give me my money back (actually she miscounted and offered me one dollar less than what I actually paid), but only in exchange for the whole meal. I left feeling embarrassed for making a perfectly normal request...

They don't care about their service. They don't care about their quality. They don't care about their customers. If they don't want my business, I'll give it to Papacitos.

I like Acapulco, but I wasn't very fond of it at first. Coming from the South where Mexican food abounds, my expectations are pretty high. Katie S. is right that their veggie fajitas are an atrocity. BLEH. I've found that their beef fajitas (I ask for heavy on the peppers and onions) are pretty good. Excellent guacamole.

The service is quick and friendly, and the delivery is particularly awesome. Whoever takes my orders on the phone is very pleasant and understands easily, which is a huge plus.  I also like that the menu is pretty extensive, so my boyfriend and I can both be pleased if he's not in the mood for Mexican food.

Overall, I quite like Acapulco with a tweak here and there.

My friend and I stumbled upon this place randomly one Friday afternoon. You would never expect that this place was worth anymore than two stars from the outside, but it is a real five-star place.

    1) The price: While some of the traditionally cheap places further down on Manhattan Avenue have been raising their prices at many times the rate of inflation, this place still has those great pre-gentrification prices. Most dishes are below $6, and burgers are in the $3-and change range.

    2) The beverage selection: While you can sit down and order your food from a menu, you get your beverage from one of the two walls of coolers, that have all Pepsi brands, all Coke brands, tons of independent brands, and a great beer selection.

    3) The food: It tastes great and the menu is huge.

    4) The TV: It plays Mexican soap operas... But hey, you get to learn some spanish while you eat!

Make the trip of Manhattan.  Excellent Mexican food, perhaps the best I have had while living here.  We had the chicken burrito, steak nachos and chicken fajitas.  The chicken burrito and steak nachos were so much food I didnt even touch the chicken fajitas.

This place is *cheap* and great.  Dont let the outside deter you (it looks like one of those sketchy food places you see in Queens that is always empty, the ones you pass by and say "wtf eats THERE?  how do they pay the bills to just stay open?!"), its nice and clean inside and the food cant be beat.  Do it!

Excellent breakfast too. Huge portions. Very good price. (I rather eat here than Papcito's).

I ordered so much stuff here already I already forgot most of it.

Recently, ordered the steak burrito and chicken burrito. Overflowing. Can't even hold it up. Sour cream on top. Tons of mexican rice.

Quesdillas were ok, not great. Too little cheese. But still good.

As someone raised in Southern California, the worst part of living in Brooklyn is the lack of even decent mexican food.

With one of my best buds moving to greenpoint I spend some time with my SoCal brethren up in the north-eastern corner of the borough. We yelped Mexican food the other day and after reading all these great reviews we couldn't help but be curious (and a little excited).

So Ok, the chips and salsa were decent, but my friend is a vegetarian and ordered the veggie fajitas, which were nothing more than steamed vegetables. I have spent time in Mexico and never ever have seen broccoli as part of the cuisine.

My chicken burrito was bland with a capital B and wasn't even wrapped, just folded over sloppily so it looked like it was packed with chicken popping out of the side but none inside the actual faux-burrito

Maybe I'm just being too picky because I grew up on some of the best Mexican food in the country, but this place is a poor excuse one way or another. Go to Chipotle, it taste's more authentic than his place.

As yet another transplanted Texan, I am THRILLED to live a few blocks from Acapulco. The portions are unbelievable, the prices are great, and the food is SO authentic. Absolutely DELICIOUS. I can't wait to go back. I might "forget" to go grocery shopping this week just to manipulate another visit.

The guac is divine - slightly spicy, extremely fresh, totally perfect. Burritos, tacos... amazing. I can't wait to try the rest of the menu!

Acapulco is the best foodie semi-secret in Brooklyn. Incredible fresh-made guacamole and the best quesadillas outside of Mexico proper. Don't let the low prices fool you, the food is top notch. Very unpretentious. Good drink selection that you grab yourself from the fridge. My BF and I have been going here for years and have never had a bad meal. Only downside: they close for vacation through the month of August, so you'll be jonesing for some Acapulco love. Plan accordingly.

Now this is great Mexican food.
I live two blocks away and have to stop myself from going on all of those nights when I just don't feel like cooking dinner.
My absolute favorite is the steak tostada with a side of guacamole and a side of jalapenos.  The tostada is incredibly crispy and light and the combination of marinated steak, sour cream, lettuce and a drizzle of their green salsa is perfect.  Oh yeah, don't forget to grab a beer from the fridge and ask for a frosty mug with a wedge of lime, it just can't be beat.
The enchiladas are great too but for some reason, probably because everything else is so cheap I usually don't "splurge" on this $9 plate..hahaha, but you should sometime, it's worth it.

Great place for a group! The food is super-cheap, with something for everyone, and very friendly service. The chorizo soft tacos were excellent. Get a side of guac - it's also great!!

With the bright fluorescent lights and plastic tablecloths, I wouldn't recommend it for a romantic date, but with such cheap beers whoever you're with will be looking great in no time...
