i love love love this place. The burrito's are huge and cheap! You can just get up and walk over to the many drink coolers and grab whatever you like. They have beer and all sorts of mexican soda's along with your regular american beverages.
I usually order a vegetable burrito and take half home b/c it is that big i can't eat the whole thing in one sitting.
If you want some good mexican food without all the pretentiousness, this is the place to go.

I eat here all the time since the Mr. moved his studio to greenpoint. I have never been crazy about their burritos but he loves the chicken. Despite my numerous begging, they can't figure out how to make me a simple bean and cheese burrito. they put broccoli and chopped onions in the veggie burrito. uh no. so, 3 stars for you acapulco, until you make me a bean and cheese burrito!
that said. if you go and are eating in, order a basket of chips. they take a bit longer to get to your table because they are deep-frying them just for you.
the nachos are omg and huge enough to split for lunch.
they have coke and pepsi FROM MEXICO in awesome glass bottles
UNIVISION is always on.
if you don't know what to order. I suggest the bacon cheeseburger. because i'm THAT kind of jew.
also they do breakfast until like 11. and it's great.

As yet another transplanted Texan, I am THRILLED to live a few blocks from Acapulco. The portions are unbelievable, the prices are great, and the food is SO authentic. Absolutely DELICIOUS. I can't wait to go back. I might "forget" to go grocery shopping this week just to manipulate another visit.

The guac is divine - slightly spicy, extremely fresh, totally perfect. Burritos, tacos... amazing. I can't wait to try the rest of the menu!

Acapulco kicks Papacito's ASS.

Far better food at half the price? I say YES!

After much deliberation (the menu is GIGANTIC), I decided on a steak burrito with guacamole. HOLY MOLY. This baby was gigantic, and STUFFED with steak. I think most of the burrito was steak. TOO MANY STEAK!!!! The steak itself was well done, which I had expected, but was nicely charred and packed a lot of flavor. The guacamole provided some wonderful zip and spice to the burrito, which just could not stay in its tortilla home. It was super delicious and inexpensive- Everything I could dream of!

Carlos Y. ordered the Enchiladas Verdes, and I think the package weighed about 2 lbs. This was some intense delivery food. Covered in sliced radishes, the enchiladas were bright and tasty.

The salsa is a bit too watery for me, but is vibrant, spicy and refreshing. Dip that warm, home made chip in some chunky, flavorful guac, relax, and let the PMS fly out the door...

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in North Brooklyn.  My buddy wants to meet for dinner tonight at another of my favorite restaurants, but I'm going to bate and switch on him and get him to eat at Acapulco.  I NEED THOSE FAJITAS!

*Updated - We ate there.  It was phenomenal.  I used to only get takeout when I lived in Greenpoint.  This was the first time I actually ate at Acapulco.  The portions are larger (wow, so much food!) and better by default.  The only thing is the service.  No matter how many times I have been there, the woman never seems to remember me or care enough to (I used to get takeout at least 1x, sometimes 2x per week).  If the hospitality were better, I would give 5 stars.

French toast is great, but for a mexican place, holy lord I've had better.

Had their pork burrito, and honestly, the meat was spoiled. Cubes of brown and white pork that was like rubber, bad. I like the atmosphere and I can see why people can get into it; the service is great too.

But their food just sucks.

This place may be out of the way for me and most people living in the area but its certainly worth the trip. The food is unbelievable! I absolutely love quesadillas with guacamole, and Acapulco delivers! The portions are very acceptable and authentic in my opinion. The menu is rather large as well. Id visit Acapulco over Papacito's any day, inexpensive friendly, convenient, filling and unreal!

We had an Acapulco burrito (veggie) and carne enchilada tacos.  Both were excellent.  I especially enjoyed the tacos.

Briana said it right, "Acapulco kicks Papacito's ASS."

It's not perfect by any means, but it's much better than the other options nearby. Much more variety, much more authentic, and cheaper. Top notch guac too.

If you like Chi-chi's then you will like this place.  It is pretty lame is what I am saying.  The best thing I can think of about this place is that it is cheap.  The second best thing is their outrageous selection of sodas including TAB.

As far as this neighborhood is concerned, and as far as I'm concerned, this is the best restaurant in the northern end of Greenpoint.  It is very cheap, the portions were huge, and the service was unexpectedly good.

For two of us:
each a beer
guacamole and chips
2 orders each of tacos - I barely finished off one, but my bf finished his without a problem

I can't believed I've lived here for so long and have managed to not make it in sooner - what is wrong with me?!

the best mexican food in greenpoint, hands down. i'm so angry that after living in greenpoint for 16 years, i wait until i move an hour away to visit this joint. had a lovely birthday dinner there. AMAZING veggie nachos (7 bucks i think? but def to split) - the perfect amount of jalapenos and cheese/bean placement. veggie tostados were also great, maybe too many veggies if anything. corona bottles for 3.50. i left stuffed and had a hearty lunch for the next day too. the quality, and amount of food you get for the price is unbeatable. i also love how downplayed the entire place is. seems like only the locals go there, which is totally understandable as there's no need to walk that far down manhattan ave.. but please do your tastebuds, friends, wallet, and yourself a favor and try this place! i'm reluctant to have it be swamped, lest i have to wait for my cheesy nachos! but they really deserve the business so i'll take one for the team.

The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't excellent.  I would come back if I was in the neighborhood.

I ordered the vegetable huaraches and my friend ordered the carnitas tacos.  My huaraches was a bit bland, but the vegetables were fresh and I enjoyed the texture of the corn meal.  The staff is really nice and the prices are very reasonable.  Including tax, for the two of us, it was only $12.

Ok, so this place scores on atmosphere, but not much else.  Two reasons:

1.  Totally not authentic, despite being divey, which is weird.  Never in my Texan life have I seen a Mexican omelet with broccoli in it.  Gross, gross.  And if you want a mexican sandwich, better to go to the Franklin Corner Deli.

2.  More importantly, they have a problem with COUNTERFEIT MONEY.  I kid you not.  They gave me a fake $10 bill, which I found out when I tried to use it at Greenpoint Fruits and Deli, and when I came back they admitted it was fake.  The guy at Fruits and Deli confirmed this has happened to him several times with money from Acapulco.  So watch out!

As you wander down Greenpoint Avenue in decreasing alphabetical order (and increasing stench), it's easy to lose faith in your boyfriend's idea of great date.

The Acapulco proves you can still trust him.

Yes, the lights are flourescent.  Yes, if you sit too close to the door, you may have to shout over the Telemundo.  But isn't the kind of authenticity today's hipsters love?  Just thinking about those plastic tablecloths tempts me to tattoo the word "Genuine" on my ass.

Granted, if you're from the West Coast, this is no big deal. When I praise the Acapulco, I am speaking more to the huddled masses of natives who yearn to breathe free of overpriced Mexican prepared by Asians.

If you're a New Yorker, you should be impressed with the unadulterated goodness (and rock-bottom prices) of the guacamole burrito here.

Note: the  vegetarian burrito is full of sauteed vegetables, including broccoli.  Not my taste, unless you're really craving an extra dose of vitamins, or feel guilty about having eaten the delightfully unhealthy, "Crunchy French Toast."

Ok, so i eat here enough for it to be almost embarrassing for a born and raised San Franciscan. But here's whatsup:

Mexican food is about the love that goes into it. And there is A LOT of love in the heaping pile of guacamole on everything here. And it doesn't come by the ounce (Taco Chulo) or cost $4 (LA burrito.)

Mexican food is about kitsch, telemundo, negro modello, etc.

And most importantly, i don't care if it comes fed-exed from mars, Mexican food should never, I REPEAT, NEVER (Ahem, papacitos) charge more than $6 for a burrito. And that is testing the limits.

Fast, cheap, tasty, filled with love. Yup.

Acapulco is my go-to place when my boyfriend and I are hungry and need something dependable and affordable. We've been here more times than I can count, and we have had the same waitress each time. I hope she gets a day off.

Anyways, I love it here. I'm a vegetarian, and they have a decent amount of options for me. The fruit shakes are interesting.. I haven't really figured out if I actually like them. The food, however, is awesome. I've gotten the Garden Club sandwich about 50 times, and it has always been delicious. It is absurdly huge, and a little difficult to maneuver, but once you get a system going, it's heaven. It is on the best bread for a sandwich, lightly toasted, and is filled with lettuce, avocado, tomato, red onion, cucumber, american cheese, and the perfect amount of mayo. The red onion is left on the side with extra lettuce and tomato, in case you don't want it. You also get a pickle on the side.

The burritos here are ridiculous. They must be eaten with a fork and a knife, but they are worth the work. My boyfriend swears by the pork and the steak burritos (he is unable to choose a favorite). Their homemade guacamole is so awesome.. it's chunky and spicy and goes well with their warm tortilla chips. They also have a pretty good bottled drink selection, including various types of beer.

The television, located on top of one of the refrigerators, is always blasting something hilarious and in Spanish, generally some sort of strange game show. They also sell candy at the counter, and I always finish my meal with a ten-cent Andes chocolate mint.
I have no idea if Acapulco is "authentic" Mexican food, and I don't care.

Acapulco is definitely one of the best places in Greenpoint for cheap AND delicious food. (Only as a runner up to the slew of cheap pierogi options.)

It's hard to find good Mexican fare in Manhattan or Brooklyn, but once you've tried Acapulco you wont look any further! The portions are HUGE, ridiculously cheap, and super yummy!  You can consume a button bursting meal here (including beer) for under $10.

The guacomole is fantastic, the chips are hot and fresh, all of the meat dishes seem trustworthy... and for desert: MANGO SHAKES!  I haven't tried any of their "gringo" dishes, but the crunchy french toast sounds temping.

If you are dining in, you can sit at the diner-esque counter, where you can watch the making of your food and enjoy the Telenovela that is ALWAYS on the t.v.  They also offer take out and delivery.

my friends effing love this place. i get tricked into going every now and then, and i always hate my food! it's cheap and all, but yuck!
DRY DRY DRY. why is the food so dang dry. i've had chicken, pork & beef here, all in the forms of burritos, chimis, and tacos, and everything is rubbery-dry! i always ask for a side of sour cream just to get things wet enough to swallow down my desert-dry throat, but even then the taste isn't so great.
however, the guacamole is great. go figure. but boo for the service.

Best hidden value for your buck in Greenpoint. Always surprise to see the bill for what you had. The list of menu is spelled out on the wall. kewl. Service is quite fast and you get what you expect from a diner but in american+mexican. I can not get over the price of cheese burger $3.50. You see the kitchen right thru the long counter and the kitchen is better maintained than most other diners. Usually get omelltes or soft tacos/burritos combos. portions are big and can not finish most of time and usually take out the rest.

Like many of the reviewers below, being from California, I am always searching for good Mexican food.  I used to really love Acapulco, especially their guacamole burrito, which they seem to have changed.  I am a fan of spicy foods and have a pretty high tolerance, but their guac burrito has become almost unbearably hot.  They have also raised the price of the burrito by about a $1 ... it is still pretty inexpensive by New York burrito pricing standards, but considering these two changes I have come to prefer the burritos at Papacitos.  I agree with the previous commentators' problems with broccoli served in burritos.  It seems that this is just as common in New York as charging around $5 for chips and salsa and I am pleased that Papacitos stays away from this leafy green.

Having lived in the Mission District of San Francisco, I was spoiled daily with phenomenal Mexican food at every turn. The east coast is an ENTIRELY different story. You can imagine my delight, then, when I discovered Acapulco in my very own neighborhood! With it's red, white, and green awning, Acapulco looks like just about every other run-of-the-mill Mexican/Latin food restaurant. However, the food you'll find there is delicious, authentic, and cheap.

You should not miss their fresh chips and salsa! I have yet to try their guacamole, but I cannot rave enough about their chips and salsa. The chips are the epitome of deep fried salted corn goodness that is matched perfectly by the fresh, zesty salsa, the complex flavors and spice of which put the tomato-y, chunky crap that other restaurants serve to shame!

I'm loving this place. Completely unassuming from the outside and modest inside, this little Mexican joint should please those who can't seem to find good Mexican fare around town (for some reason, it's a big feat in this city). It has the feel of a diner, complete with counter and stools, and the crowd will remind you that you are in the terrain of artists. No Williamsburg-esque attitude though (i.e. they're actual artists).

Great place for weekend brunch - relaxed, cheap and yummy. I'm addicted to the cheese enchiladas, although the huevos rancheros are excellent, as are the nachos (if you must they offer regular diner fare as well). You can easily leave this place pleasantly full for under 10 bucks. Service can get a little slow when they are packed, but you'll quickly forget once the food arrives.

Acapulco is great Mexican food and very inexpensive. The burritos/tacos and other standard fare are the best around.

The place has a good amount of seating and a diner-style bar.

Try the crunch french toast for breakfast - french toast with crispy cereal cooked in - fresh fruit - fabulous.

As someone raised in Southern California, the worst part of living in Brooklyn is the lack of even decent mexican food.

With one of my best buds moving to greenpoint I spend some time with my SoCal brethren up in the north-eastern corner of the borough. We yelped Mexican food the other day and after reading all these great reviews we couldn't help but be curious (and a little excited).

So Ok, the chips and salsa were decent, but my friend is a vegetarian and ordered the veggie fajitas, which were nothing more than steamed vegetables. I have spent time in Mexico and never ever have seen broccoli as part of the cuisine.

My chicken burrito was bland with a capital B and wasn't even wrapped, just folded over sloppily so it looked like it was packed with chicken popping out of the side but none inside the actual faux-burrito

Maybe I'm just being too picky because I grew up on some of the best Mexican food in the country, but this place is a poor excuse one way or another. Go to Chipotle, it taste's more authentic than his place.

Make the trip of Manhattan.  Excellent Mexican food, perhaps the best I have had while living here.  We had the chicken burrito, steak nachos and chicken fajitas.  The chicken burrito and steak nachos were so much food I didnt even touch the chicken fajitas.

This place is *cheap* and great.  Dont let the outside deter you (it looks like one of those sketchy food places you see in Queens that is always empty, the ones you pass by and say "wtf eats THERE?  how do they pay the bills to just stay open?!"), its nice and clean inside and the food cant be beat.  Do it!

When my wife and I moved into our place on Clay Street almost four years ago, we imagined how great it would be if the Mexican place on the corner was actually good.  We ordered burritos for take out that night and couldn't believe the huge portions on rice, beans and veggies, all quite fresh, for less than $5 apiece.  And the food was really good.

It has remained a staple.  The menu spans Mexican and American diner food: good burgers to go along w/ burritos, "authentic" tacos, quesadillas, tostatas, tortas, fajitas, and (my favorite) huaraches.  The chips and red sauce (home made) are irresistible. The guacamole is good, too.  Cheap beer, large coolers full of drinks, and decent coffee w/ free refills--what more could you want? Great breakfast food, too.  And friendly service that transcends the language barrier.

They just put new speakers, so the Latin music can blare that much louder (when they don't have Spanish-language soap operas playing).

My favorite, though, is the sign outside that says, "We Delivery."

My friend and I stumbled upon this place randomly one Friday afternoon. You would never expect that this place was worth anymore than two stars from the outside, but it is a real five-star place.

1) The price: While some of the traditionally cheap places further down on Manhattan Avenue have been raising their prices at many times the rate of inflation, this place still has those great pre-gentrification prices. Most dishes are below $6, and burgers are in the $3-and change range.

2) The beverage selection: While you can sit down and order your food from a menu, you get your beverage from one of the two walls of coolers, that have all Pepsi brands, all Coke brands, tons of independent brands, and a great beer selection.

3) The food: It tastes great and the menu is huge.

4) The TV: It plays Mexican soap operas... But hey, you get to learn some spanish while you eat!

It's been awhile since I've been here, because even though it's in Greenpoint, it's not in my Greenpoint. Wonderful, low-price Mexican food that's not Tex-Mex. There were four of us, and we each got something different: soft tacos, grilled steak burrito, huaraches, and something else. We shared a chips and salsa, which were fresh and warm. I got a tamarindo Jarritos, and I don't think they have horchata. The food was great, and the ticket $40 for all four of us. Worth returning to!

Now this is great Mexican food.
I live two blocks away and have to stop myself from going on all of those nights when I just don't feel like cooking dinner.
My absolute favorite is the steak tostada with a side of guacamole and a side of jalapenos.  The tostada is incredibly crispy and light and the combination of marinated steak, sour cream, lettuce and a drizzle of their green salsa is perfect.  Oh yeah, don't forget to grab a beer from the fridge and ask for a frosty mug with a wedge of lime, it just can't be beat.
The enchiladas are great too but for some reason, probably because everything else is so cheap I usually don't "splurge" on this $9 plate..hahaha, but you should sometime, it's worth it.

Like most Californians living in New York, it's become something of a hobby for me and my roommates to bemoan the lack of decent Mexican food to be had on this coast.  That said, there is a real lack of decent Mexican food to be had on this coast.  For example, when I order steak fajitas and instead of onions and bell on the skillet you bring me carrots?  That is outrageous.  Acapulco does not pull that nonsense.  For a reasonable price they brought me two very tasty soft tacos.  I wanted one soft and one hard taco, but they wouldn't do it (which kind of bothered me...I mean, how hard is it?)  The tacos were overflowing with pork, and I also ordered a  side of rice and pinto beans.   Neither was the best thing I've ever eaten- the pork was a little dry, and I could have used some cheese and/or sour cream, but the meat did have a nice authentic Mexican flavor.  My roommates thought the steak on their tacos was a little dry as well.  We also shared chips and guacamole, and the chips were fresh from the fryer, hot and crispy.  The guac was a nice consistency with plenty of chunks of avocado.

Unfortunately, Acapulco stops delivery a couple of blocks from my apartment, and it's a tad too far (about a mile) to walk to very often, so I don't know how likely I am to become a regular customer.  But it's comforting knowing that when nothing but Mexican food will do there's at least an option.

Super cheap, very tasty and they deliver. A much, much better choice than Yummy Taco.
