This is a gem!
They have a prime beer selection, good food (I'm a fan of the fries, and the Rachel), and live (usually local original acoustic, or semi-acoustic) music almost every night. There aren't really servers often, you just go to the bar to order what you want. It's not a great place for mingling, so much....it gets pretty constipated when there's more than 50 people or so, but when the patio opens in the nicer months it can be a little more fun.
It's worth a visit if you're in the area and looking for a fancy brew, some harty grub, or random late-night music. If you don't find what you fancy here, you can mosy on down the road and find more very low cost live music options almost any night of the week, too, so it's a good place to start (or stop....since some of the drink specials kick in after 10 or 10:30). -

I love beer.
I love live music.
I love places that offer local brews and feature local musicians.
Acadia has both. .. and for these 2 reasons alone... Acadia Cafe is a magical place for me. I have been here a few times & each time I was able to try a new local beer.
Other reasons to love Acadia Cafe.. the guys at the bar are nice, their beer selection is vast, and the space itself is quite intimate (it does get a little loud when a band is playing), and local bands play regularly (no cover charge)...
On my last visit I tried the Harriet Wodan Weizen (local brew).. and a local band was playin' some tunes.. I was happy & content... and because of this.. I will be back to visit Acadia anytime I find myself over in the Cedar/Riverside/West Bank area... -

I arrived at Acadia cafe for a Thursday lunch. Upon entering the tired cafe (it's really essentially just a bar with a large dining area), I was greeted by a sign requesting that I order at the bar--a request i was happy to oblige. I ordered a chipotle turkey sandwich, because I love most sandwiches with swiss cheese, and sat down and waited patiently.
It seemed like the wait was extended. It felt like about 15 minutes, but it was probably closer to 10, which I didn't really understand since I just ordered a sandwich (though I did request it to be grilled, which probably adds 2-3 minutes). Eventually it arrived, and the sandwich was good. It seemed like it was lacking in the flavor department, but still good. The fries were underwhelming. The meal was worth the $7 I paid, but I don't think I'd pay any more.
The one thing that this place has going for it is their beer selection, which I was not able to take advantage of, since my employer discourages drinking during lunch breaks. So, if I ever were to visit during the evening, I'd probably give it a 4. Such is life! -

What the acadia is great for is their beer selection. It's superb, especially for the neighborhood it's in. Their bartenders are also well versed in the craft of classic cocktail mixology. You'd be more likely to get a properly prepared manhattan or old fashioned than have the bartender know what the you're talking about when you order a slippery nipple or buttery nipple or whatever absurd shot people are sloppily slurping these days.
The food is really good too. Their vegetarian/vegan sandwich is indeed off the hook. While I still prefer Hard Times eats, sometimes I'm just not in the mood for a sh#! show of sorts. Then, sometimes I am.
Speaking of sh*$ shows, I can't say that I've been entirely crazy about some of the musical lineups I've encountered at Acadia. I will forever support venues that support local music though, so perhaps my snobbery should be set aside. If I had my way they'd definitely bring back the old Tuesday night improvisation that they had at the old Franklin/Nicollet location. Unfortunately the new location probably wouldn't lend well to that sort of a vibe.
Great patio, staff, etc etc. -
Review from Yvonne W.
I spend the majority of my school semesters here. It's too close to Carlson & Hanson halls to not take advantage of it. As someone making a point of trying new beer all the time, I can always find something new & intriguing on tap at the Acadia.
You can't deny happy hour here, especially if you're looking for a place for a group meeting. $4 off pitchers can take you far. Half-priced apps also ensure you'll stick around for a while. I prefer chips & guac, but people feeling more gluttonous should go for the sweet potato rounds & cheese curds. Even if you miss happy hour, food prices aren't going to force you to sacrifice that third drink.
The Acadia is also a surprisingly good place to study. If you don't like getting over-caffeinated with 3 lattes as you sit at Starbucks all night, consider beer as a good study aid. This place is quiet enough in the afternoon where you can grab a chair on stage, plug in your headphones, and go to work. They do have coffee if it suits your fancy, but that's like ordering wine at Dunn Bros.
Late-night shows and poetry readings can be hit-and-miss, depending on why you're going here in the first place. They have a "no cover songs" policy, but that didn't stop this jazz band I saw once from covering Bjork's "All is Full of Love." Fortunately, the cover was good enough to merit the exception.
If you're near campus and looking for good brew, this is the place for you. -

Another favorite haunt of mine and colleagues; we would go here before returning back to slaving away at school during happy hour. Yes... you kept us sane.. it was indeed happy. It was always nice when it got a little warmer; we'd sit outside in that little alleyway and it reminded us of Italy.
I never really tried the food, but they had a decent wine selection! -

Beer selection was great, taste before you buy is welcomed. Food was good. Staff was knowledgeable about the beers. Space is kinda weird, not weird enough to not go back in for great beer though.

If I lived closer to this place, I would probably spend far too much time here.
The staff are super friendly, helpful, and extremely genuine - I think I am in love - possibly the nicest bartenders I have encountered so far in MPLS. The on tap beer selection is absolutely splendid - they even use the right glasses and clean them properly so you get that gorgeous lacing.
I only have been to one show (Sneaky Pete Bauer, who was awesome, btw) but it seems like the music lineup looks pretty good. -

You like beer, here is your damn place. They have crazy amounts of beer that you won't find in most places. Probably the best beer bar in the Cities. Right up there with the Happy Gnome. Holy crap, Rodenbach on tap....yes please!
They also have great food.
It's more of a laid back experience so don't expect to necessarily get the most dashing service. I think that you have to order up at the counter some times...not quite sure.
First time I was there I went at a weird time during the day and ended up hanging out and talking with the staff about beer and the upcoming revitalized Cedar fest. They ended up giving me a few samples and made the price tag seem worth it when I finally decided on what I wanted. Next time I popped in I walked into a great local band lead by Gabe Barnett. He made some funny, scary faces while singing but man were they money! Jug band, banjo, acoustic guitar...with a side of beer. yeah. I'll have another.
One of the coolest things about this bar (besides the beer) is the live music, almost every night. Don't expect to hear any cover songs...they are simply not allowed. Never heard of that before, but you gotta love a bar that makes their own rules and sticks to em.
Bottom line... if you're a beer geek like me, hit up the Acadia Cafe! -

Wow wow wow hawow
Great beer selection and darn tootin the best fries I've had this side a the Mississippi!
They have renovated the stage for the local musicians to get their rockstar on and be sure to check out the back patio which is a great place to smoke, joke and toke (if your into that) with your friends over a pint and a burger.
There's never a huge line at the bar and the service is super helpful if you can't make up your mind on what to drink.
Five stars for the excellent food, beer, service, patio, and local music. -

Although my first meeting with you involved an obnoxious bongo band playing in the background, I have to say that overall, I am impressed with you.
Great beer selection and delicious food. I had the hummus plate during the awful bongo session. Good hummus, delicious feta and warm pita bread contributed greatly to my evening drunk munchies.
Just stopped by today after a stressful career fair. Although your bartender thought my id was totally fake - to be fair, I no longer sport the angry look and buzz cut as indicated on my driver's license - he was pretty nice to me after he realized otherwise.
Your homemade fries are delicious. They manage to be both soggy and crispy at the same time. They are delicious by themselves, but even more so with ketchup.
They have a later happy hour that runs from 4pm-7pm on the weekdays, which I appreciate.Listed in: Late Happy Hours

What a great find! Every person I encountered was simply fantastic and friendly. A special shout out to the bartender Jacob...you made my day with my cold Cider and the extra lengths you made in trying to get a hold of your manager.
The menu looked good and they have an impressive list of seven dollar drinks that would have tasted especially yummy, had it not been so early in the day.
From the looks of it, they have a great music scene, and I'm excited to pick out a couple of acts to go see. If anyone wants to get together for a Yelp outing there, let me know -- I'm game!!Listed in: Beer YUM!

I used to live down the street from the original Acadia. I had enjoyed it's theater, catching a few plays, a band or two and even a City Council debate there. I curse the condos and starbucks that drove them out.
A minor diversion: if you are one of those people that frequent starbucks that set up shop next door to existing, independent coffee shops, I want you to die. You are the scum of the earth.
Acadia relocated to the West Bank, a neighborhood I've become found of lately. I was worried when they moved in next door to another, better establighed coffee shop.
However, rather than compete Acadia apparently decided to focus on beer and food. I've been 3 times, and I couldn't tell you for sure they even served coffee.
They have a very good beer selection (besting the Nomad, IMO). The food is better than Town Hall (very hit or miss) and is therefore my go to dining destination on the West Bank (sorry, Hard Times).
The interior is bright and friendly. I would think this a great place to study, if you desire beer accompaniment instead of coffee. I brought a book last time, but wound up starting a conversation with a couple fells st the bar. I lost an hour to pointless musings on German beers (and related topics), and that's okay with me.
Service could be a little less lackadaisical. Hopefully, with time.Listed in: Kicking it on the West Bank

Love the beer selection, the hood isn't my favorite as parking can be a pain and the area itself needs to be cleaned up a bit. But, worth a stop for a pint. I enjoyed some Rogue Yellow Snow IPA (great name, eh?) with a nice cup of soup the other day.
If you are in the area, go a few blocks north (I think) to the Town Hall Brewery and compare the two. I think their menu is a bit more solid (but still basically pub fare) and they brew their own beer.
I have had a couple of bartenders, all very friendly, and they seem to know the beer, which is key for a place like Acadia.Listed in: Beer Geeks Unite!

Fantastic beer selection....Friendly service....Fine atmosphere. And the food? Have to say I haven't found a favorite yet. Still, that's not going to stop me from returning, probably with some frequency.
My first visit was for lunch, shortly after Acadia moved from Nicollet to Cedar-Riverside. My sandwich, the chipotle turkey, was fine, although nothing to write home about, and yet, I liked the place right from the start. It was good to see that it was already bustling with customers, too. Clearly Acadia had developed a good, strong following at its previous location. I left, vowing to return.
Next time I stopped was for breakfast. Again, the food was fine, but this time the place was quiet. I found myself looking around a lot, including at passersby on the sidewalk, and at the fantastic array of beers on tap. I knew that the next time I dropped in it would be later in the day. And so it was.
Acadia's selection of tap and bottled beers is what will continue calling me back. On a sunny Saturday afternoon, I ordered a black bean burger, topped off with a Wild Devil IPA. A fan of Victory Brewing's Hop Devil, I was confident that this was a sure bet--and it was. However, with some 30 taps to choose from it did take some studying and careful thought before I made my decision. (I didn't even glance at the more than 40 bottled beers Acadia offers.)
Food prices are reasonable here, and looking at the menu online I see any number of sandwiches, breakfasts, and salads I'd be happy to try. Next time I'll likely go still later in the day, with friends, to sample more of Acadia's beer offerings...and food...with some music on the side. -

Don't try to eat here after 10pm on a Sunday... Even though their website says they have specials from 10pm to close (1am).
Stopped in after the Steely Dan concert on Sunday night. We were starving and in need of some good beer, so Acadia sounded like the perfect place. Hunted for a parking spot, walked in and asked about the possibility of ordering some food.
Bartender rolled her eyes, looked at her watch and said, "we might be able to get you something fried, but make it quick, we aren't serving now."
Really? Ok, that's cool. We left and found Fitz's Bar and Grille, where we received fantastic service, enjoyed good pub food, and tipped well.
Acadia may very well be an awesome place, but for us out-of-town visitors that rely on Yelp and an accurate website (Acadia's says they serve food until 1am), it was a crappy experience. :-(Comment from jeff r. of Acadia Café 11/10/2009

I am so grateful for Acadia's proximity to the U of M West Bank because I love stopping in to devour a black bean burger and try a new type of beer whenever possible. Seriously, the selection is great.
It's small and somewhat shabby inside, but that's what makes it charming. There's always an interesting mix of people and something likeable about the overall ambiance that you can't quite put your finger on.
If you go in the evening I suggest sharing some pitchers with friends because there's usually live music and it's always a good time. -

Stopped in again.
New Year's Day night we stopped in, right the typical dead bar night, those are the kind of nights I love. We had a party of four. Some of the others ordered an appetizer, which they were happy with, and when the rest of our food came it was done well.... except... my sweet potato rounds were overcooked to the point I had to select the more edible ones. Oh well, if you expect everything to be perfect all the time you will continually be let down.
At some point after the first beer I decided it would be funny to get my co-worker friend redrunk. So we had a few more rounds, something different everytime (that's just the kinda fellas we are), simply enjoying the variety of beer Acadia offers and we appreciate.
Although we couldn't understand a thing the musician was singing, his version of the blues helped set the tone for a mildly debaucherous evening which likely ended in some girlfriend being offput with one of the partakers.
The bartender was helpful and happy, love to see that.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Acadia is a fairly cool bar/cafe with a cozy, lived-in feel. It seems like a smaller, slightly softer version of Triple Rock.
I came here and had one of their few vegan items, a house-made blackbean burger ($8 with tax). They also have a hummus sandwich and some boring items of that type. The blackbean burger normally has non-vegan cheese and chipotle mayo, so make sure to specify you're vegan.
The burger was okay. I felt the patty was too beany and dry and the streak of guacamole they added didn't really help to moisten things up. Other than that, you get your standard fixings such as a pickle, onion slices, a piece of tomato and a piece of lettuce. The bun, a dry white flour bun, disappointed me. Is it too much to ask for a fresh, simple, wholewheat option?
The fries that came with it were also decent but not great.
I'd come to Acadia for a drink with friends (they have a large and diverse selection of beers both bottled and on tap) but their food is mediocre for vegans. -

Some of the best fries in town, since I only get here once a month with a regular social meeting, I indulge ! You can't go wrong with any of the sandwiches they accompany, I've liked them all , but keep coming back to the GLBT :-) (guacamole, lettuce, bacon & tomato)
There is an amazing selection of beers on tap for such a small place. I've been back in the evening once or twice so I could try those;.local brand Surly always has good ones.
They don't always handle the lunch rush well, though. Try to arrive early. The one time we did not they messed up and brought my order a full 20 min later than my friend's. -

I tried Acadia today for my first time.
It was a cold and rainy Sunday,
overcast to the dickens.
I was feeling hollow and beaten down from the weather.
And then I went inside Acadia to be filled up and renewed.
The bright smiles and friendly demeanor of the employees cheered me right up. And their tip jar that has an old school Yo! MTV Rap trading card of LL Cool J taped to the side brightened my dismal day even more.
Oh Acadia. . . how do you manage to make me love you so quickly?
I had one of their 27 beers that they have on tap, Point's Nude Beach, and really enjoyed it. I was quite impressed with how many beers they have and that the menu offers a bit of a description about each beer. 27 beers on tap? Sheesh!! I could never get bored with this place :)
They also boast quite a selection of bottled beers.
For food, I had their vegetarian black bean burger and my socks were knocked completely off and into another dimension!!! I'm not one to choose vegetarian meals, typically, but the blurb about the burger on the menu made my mouth water instantly. A black bean burger smothered in pepper jack cheese with jalapenos and guacamole all on a toasted bun. Yum! This tasty burger came with a side of delicious fries that were the perfect compliment to my meal. I've never had a burger made of black beans, so I may not be the best measure for such a meal, but the bean patty was moist and scrumptious. Oh so yummy!
As I sat in the restaurant, chewing my food as slowly as possible so that I may savor every delicious morsel, I took in the surroundings of my new favorite burger/beer joint. Acadia has a stage for bands/musicians to play at and fliers on the walls to inform customers of future shows. Also adorning the walls were pieces of art that seemed interesting enough. I have not heard how their music events carry out, but with a beer selection such as Acadia's, it'd definitely be worth stopping in for a listen and a sip. -

Would probably be more inclined to give this a 2.5, but I'll give it a 3.
Came to see a friend play. There was just something off to me about the atmosphere. I felt like I was in somebody's basement. It just didn't seem that inviting for a music venue- that's just me. There was no place to sit, tables were really close together and hard to move around.
I'm sure this place has a lot to offer, it just wasn't my glass of hipster beer.. -

I came here for a buddy's show and I've been here once or twice before too. Pretty good beer selection, I was pleasantly surprised to find Bourbon County Stout on Tap. At a solid 13%, it always makes for an interesting night.
The space itself has a weird vibe to it. It's not quite cozy like a cafe should be. I'm not sure if it's the lighting or what but I always feel like I'm in a half finished warehouse or something. -
Review from Paola M.
I come here for lunch once a month or so. After experimenting with different sandwiches and burgers I settled on the veggie melt: very very very good. The french fries though are lacking, or better they are not what I like. They are slightly burnt and soggy, I think they are meant to be that way, I just happen to like crunchy... On the other hand you can substitute with soup, salad or sweet fries which are all OK. Also the burger West Bank burger is pretty good
They have a decent beer selection and here I once tried the Surely Bitter, I have been looking for it ever since and never found it again. Is a lager kind of beer and I happened to like it a lot, unfortunately seems to be untraceable....
I also was there for happy hour a couple of times. I don't remember the food as being particularly good (nor particularly bad), but it was pretty cheap!! -

I walked in this place while visiting MN a few years ago, shortly after Acadia had opened, and nearly gasped. All those tap handles! It was quite exciting to see.
I was in MN again over the weekend and had to stop back in. This place just gets me. It speaks to my soul. It's the kind of place I'd hang out in all the time if I lived nearby.
Love the decor. Kind of dark, lots of space, lots of beer paraphernalia. I kind of like that you have to order at the counter. The place just seems so low-key and chill. And the servers have always been friendly. The place just gives me a good vibe.
The food has always been excellent. I love the black bean burger, though the patty is a little mushier than most I've tried - so just go in knowing that. I like it, but it's a texture thing and some people don't like mushy. The burger comes with jalapenos, cheese, guac and some other sauce. Just super yummy. The cheese curds were ... not like the State Fair's. They were a little burned, but still good. I mean, you can't go too wrong with fried curds of cheese.
The beer selection/variety rocks. I love the local focus. And all the draft options.
Overall, just a great place to get a cheap-ish plate of food, good beer and hang out.Listed in: Hooray, beer!

Visited on a Wednesday night before a show at Triple Rock. Staff was exceedingly helpful and courteous. Food was solid, and it arrived within 10 minutes of ordering. Burger was above average, and the side salad (I substituted at no charge) was great.
I didn't try any of the beers or wine, but there was an extensive selection.
The overall vibe at Acadia is great - I was impressed by the wide range of ages of patrons in the restaurant - seemingly people from their 20s up to their 70s, and I dig that. -

I have worked on seven corners for 4 years and have not been here until this week! I don't know what I was thinking. Their food is great and their tap selection is even better!
It was simple and perfect. My buddy was in town from across the world. We had a nice walk through campus to reminisce on old times when we decided to get lunch and a beer at Acadia.
I had the Classic Turkey sandwich. Simple turkey sandwich with their own chipotle mayo served on 7-grain bread. Great for lunch. They have hand-cut fries to accompany the delicious sandwich too. However, there were way too many to finish!
They have Summit's Oatmeal Stout on tap, among many other beers you wouldn't imagine to see! You don't see this beer on tap a lot, so I had to indulge. Just like I remembered, sweet, smooth and delicious for an afternoon treat. They have beer for everyone.
We sat on the patio that is tucked between Acadia and Mapps Coffee. It is an odd spot for the patio, but it is intimate enough for conversation without taking away the city feel.
You need to order from the counter. We only saw our server when he brought out the food, but that was all we needed. My meal and beer was $15 including tip. Just what I was looking for that day! -

Totally still 5 stars for Acadia - I'm here yelping from a booth on the corner of 4th and Cedar and enjoying the different crowd during the day. I am hunkering down some fries and a beer and settling in to study (don't judge me, I'm from Wisconsin) metabolism for the afternoon. They have Crispin! I've been wanting to try that, so that was exciting. However, they ditched their other cider beer, which is vaguely disappointing, as the other one was slightly cheaper. However, Crispin is a bit more tasty. So, I'm alright with it.
They are training someone today, so I had to wait a bit for my drink, but I've been there and you have to train them sometime, so whatever. They are smart to train them during the day! They were drilling him on all the different beers - I appreciate that! I like my acadia employees with their information about my beer.
Anyway, yay Acadia!Listed in: West Bank (my love), We like to study

I ordered the Vegan Veggie sandwich, and they said it would be 20 minutes. Okay, so they were busy.
40 minutes later I'm thinking "Hey, this is like salad on bread, what's the deal?" and then I notice that many people who had ordered more complicated meals after me had already been served.

Environment is a little too college and barely post-college for me. The beer selection is mid-priced but excellent. The food is average, though their veggie burger is tasty, as are the fries. I never even noticed this place, and it's on the corner of cedar-riverside. On a Sat. afternoon it was packed. It was solo live music time. I met up with a friend who was performing there. They have a great bar menu. I ordered a spinach salad, that came with a tangy, homemade dressing. My friend got a portobello mushroom sandwich on grilled panini. He frequents here, probably being a musician.Good sized space that doesn't get too cramped.

Lately I have suffered through some of the worst music around to enjoy a meal at the Acadia. What is the deal with the college crowd thinking that inexperience and inability means their music is "experimental"? Still, I have come to the conclusion that I would do anything for these black bean burgers. From now on, I'll be sticking to weeknights before 9 pm to avoid the new wave of musicians. I have recently discovered a new favorite beer called Lagunitas courtesy of the wonderfully informative Acadia beer menu. Delicious...and with a black bean burger in my sights, not even the disastrous "music" can keep me away!

i stopped here for a couple of pints after a meeting on campus. the a/c wasn't working (or maybe it just doesn't exist . . . ?), so upon entry i debated whether or not i should stay. i decided to get a pint and see what happened. as soon as the beer hit my lips, i completely forgot about the a/c. beer -- YUMMY!
it's a friendly, no-frills place where you can catch some local musical talent and put back a few. if you're looking for bells and whistles, then this probably isn't the place for you. however, for a little rough around the edges fun, this was a great choice.
