This review is only for their weapons department. I needed to pick up a few tactical shotguns, AR-15s, and handguns for an upcoming gig. They have a modest collection of firearms but stock the most popular armaments. Their knives are only mediocre however their accessories are excellent. Mike, one of the evening service individuals is a real peach to work with (and very knowledgeable), but some of the youngsters there only work for their paycheck (but get the job done). Their prices are great but no discount for ex-military or ex-CIA members :(

My most recent experience fell right into line with the people before me and their disgust with the service.
It started in the hunting section, where three people gathered behind the counter to deal with one customer at a time, there were three people in front of me and it took a while. When I did get service it was courteous, but not that knowledgeable.
Having struck out there, I went to the shoe dept. where four staff were talking in a group, and seconds after I had arrived, all disappeared. I hunted the isles twice, looking for a blue shirt, but just came upon other shoppers equally bemused by the sudden dearth of assistants.
The check-out was smooth, but probably because nobody could buy anything. -

Good store, great location, needs more staff! I always spend more time on waiting in the line or waiting to get assistance for a specific item (such as Shimano Curado 301)... Although once you get the person in charge of the department, it is very good service. Staff does not offer help on their own as they should though. They see you looking for something but just walk by and ignore...

Came in on afriday afternoon when the store was not very busy looking for an athletic training watch. I looked for help, and when I finally found someone to help she knew nothing of the products, and didn't even attempt to find someone who did. All of the employees were just standing around talking and laughing with each other, paying no attention to me when I was clearly looking for help. I finally checked out and the price I was charged was significantly more than was clearly posted on the box. I then had to go to customer service to get help with this( where all the employees were standing talking) where they rudely told me go back to the checkout, after the checkout told me to go the customer service. This was extremely unorganized, and I was amazing at how rude the "team leader " was to me when all I wanted was a price adjustment. They finally fixed everything for me after about 20 minutes, and I was elated to leave this place. The selection of products was great, but I couldnt believe the terrible customer service and lack of initiative in the employees.
If you can avoid it, do. -

Is it weird that sporting goods and camping equipment turn me on?
A battery-operated blender to make daiquiris on the river?! A pink taser to zap the shizzle outta the bad guys? ...Boxing gloves, air sofas, softball gloves, canopies, deep fryers, tackle-boxes, fishing poles ... a canoe?! Yes please, I'll take one of each.
Though I always forget that this location exists, I'm glad it's near my 'hood. They stay busy for the most part and come in handy when I'm in need of anything from a giant cooler to a Speedo for my little nephew. The only thing Academy could do better is have more staff manning the floor and assisting customers. It's damn near impossible to 1) find an employee and 2) convince them to help you find something. They're running around everywhere, coming and going with no time to talk. Boo. -

I like this location and had exactly what we were looking for ( uniform shorts and backpack) and then some...things were easy to find b/c it wasn't messy like some of their other locations.

you know, I want to *love* Academy but I just can't! Don't get me wrong, Academy is the "store with the right price" but man do you have to wade through a bunch of caca to find what you want.
I get too antsy in stores where I can't find something readily, especially gym clothes -- how many pairs of shorts and dry fit shirts can you possibly need to sort through. And this brings me to the reason why I can't just *love* this place.....Twice now I've purchased something without trying it on only to find that the size marked on the label is different than what is on the tag...it's a pain in the ass.
Lesson learned, get in line and try on the items you wish to purchase. You will save yourself time. -

I can't believe the service I got from here. I was in need of a last minute ski mask for my snowboarding trip. So I went looking myself at first then I went ahead and asked an employee.
Oh it's in the back of hunting...
I walk to hunting nothing...
Ask another employee...
Oh it's in team sports...
I walk to team sports...
Ask another employee..
It's in the middle of apparel...
Walk to apparel...
Ask one final employee...
He's like yeah it's right next to the assault rifles and laughed at me.
You're lucky I wasn't planning on robbing you.Listed in: Houston: Shopping

First off if you are looking for any local/Texas college or pro team stuff this place has a pretty good selection and a wide variety. Rockets, Texans, Longhorns, Rice, Astros, and I even saw some Saints and Brees Jerseys. Plus the store has it's own section so it makes it very convenient upon entering. Just go left.
They carry all types of athletic lines for shorts, t-shirts, sneakers and they have a variety of different sporting goods for different departments from fishing gear, bikes, baseball, footballs, and of course hunting gear. If you need any type of sporting equipment they should carry it. I made the mistake of buying a basketball at Target, spur of the moment, then found the same one cheaper here plus five times the selection. Any future purchases of sporting good needs will come from this place.
The one star knock is mainly because the building looks like an eyesore. Someone had to say it. -

Fast, fast, fast. I had to stop in here and grab some cheap racquetball equipment and I had to do so because I was teaching a newbie. I had not stepped in some time, and I was delighted at the speed and efficiency of everything from the staff to the checkout.
They answered the questions I needed, fast and effectively, and they had me in and out in no time. If I had to say anything for this place it is that I had to dock a star for the fact that while they knew where to send me in the store, they did so without asking any deep questions and they make the experience a bit too accelerated. Without any deep engagement, I was not tempted to spend more.
However, given that I knew what I needed and all I needed was to be pointed in the direction of a specific piece of equipment, this place made the grade and did so spectacularly well. -

Oh Academy, how I've missed you. I love your halls 'o goodies that can keep me busy for hours. I love that I can find sporting goods that fit whatever phase I happen to be in (currently, in a dumbbell era) even if it means that your items end up dusty and in my closet. I love having options for all my products and being able to be a cheapskate or a big spender depending on my mood. And I love that check out is always fast and easy.
I only wish that your aisles weren't so close together. And that you had a few more employees so that someone could've told me that the blowup mattress that I bought would need a pump. But it is okay--I forgive you. I even came back a few days later to see you and get the pump instead of holding a grudge. And I enjoyed your wall of pepper spray most of all--the pink just goes with everything. -

Academy is the place to go for athletic apparel and sports goods. It is a little cheaper than Sports Authority and has a fantastic selection of Nike, Under Armour and more.
Pro: Best selection of knee/ankle braces in the city.
Cons: they don't have much Winter Sport gear such as helmets, shoes etc...
Checkout is fast and easy. -

The employees in the shoe section were all bunched together talking and one them playing with some toy that made fart sounds. We even asked for 2 different sizes and the guy walked away after getting one.
But the price was right. -

Always have what I need, but the staff is not the most reliable. Academy needs to train the staff to really know what each department has & be helpful to the customers!
