Review from Don V.
Capitola, CA
I have now been a member of ASD since April 12th of this year and so far the experience has been what I was hoping for and more. I specifically chose Krav Maga as a vehicle to get back into shape and to provide an outlet for stress. As such, all of my comments are limited to the Krav classes and not the MMA or JCF classes. My experience upon joining was that the staff was very friendly and would actually remember your name from one class to the next which was a pleasant surprise. The better part was when I had attended class that there was a mix of people in the classes. I am forty and was somewhat dreading going to a martial arts class like the ones I remember from my early twenties where the average age would be 20 with the one old guy in the class as I didn't really want to be the old guy. What I found was the average class has about twenty students ranging in age from the early twenties to the early seventies. That's right, I said the early seventies. I believe this diversity along with the culture the staff provides creates the friendly atmosphere at ASD. I can say after a dozen classes I know the names of at least twenty other students.
The typical Krav class I have attended has started with a 25 minute 'warm up' that will consist of mix of aerobic, strength and core training that will stress anyone as you control how hard you push the pace. While the staff doesn't want you dogging it in the warm up they are very good about modifications to the exercise/motion called out based on one's physical abilities. An example would be that I hurt my knee in my second class and increase the swelling every time I do burpees. As such, they provide an alternative to this movement that allows me to still get the proper 'warm up' without making my injury worse. After the 'warm up' the will focus self-defense techniques in realistic situations. I stress realistic as my past martial arts experience had a self-defense concept of striking a menacing traditional martial arts pose and then engage the attacker in a complex series of moves while doing your best Bruce Leroy impression. Unfortunately, as a forty year old in marginal physical shape the last thing I want to do is square off in an athletic competition with an attacker who is likely faster, stronger and in better shape than I am. At ASD you will be put into realistic situations and taught how to quickly extradite yourself from the situation doing as much damage as possible in three to five seconds and get away. The skill(s) will be practiced with a partner or several partners, based on the technique, and you will get a real feel for how the technique will work in the real world as you will have multiple opportunities to practice with your part via the use of punch/kick shields.
If you are looking to be a bad ass, I believe this is not the class for you. Everest and his team stress over and over that one needs to be situational aware and avoid problematic situations. It is only once someone else has decided that there will be a problem should you do what is necessary to incapacitate the attacker or would be attacker and safely extradite yourself from the situation.
Overall I give the Krav classes at ASD two thumbs up. -

Krav Maga
Ok. So after the first 3 days of my free Krav Maga trial the second thought running through my head was "Where have you been all my life", the first thought was related to how welcoming the entire staff was (is). I can't say that I've ever received a poor welcome to a new gym or dojo but after 3 months I can say that it is genuine at ASD. That's important to me because frankly the gym is popular, and it could be real easy to simply become "just another body", but the staff at ASD really puts forth the effort to get to know you and follow and promote your progress ... that's cool.
Well, all of the "feel good" stuff aside, and more to the point of what makes this a great Self Defense school for me. The first word that comes to mind is "Real". Everything that I have learned so far has obviously been well thought out and is absolutely practical. Theory doesn't play much of a role here. If a technique won't get you out of a bad situation then it isn't taught. I suppose that is the nature of Krav Maga, but it seems worth mentioning here anyway, because they do such a good job of it.
Another point worth mentioning is that I've found every work-out to be designed with a purpose and designed for intensity. That said, in my 3 months here I have never seen a student pushed or pressured to perform past their ability, the student is in control and responsible for their own efforts and progress. If you need rest, then rest, if you need water, then get some water, but if you stay on the mat, then work hard. And with all of the different types of people that I have met in class (men and women, big, small, shy, aggressive ,super intense, laid back) it seems to be a great approach for everyone.
One last thing, and a welcome surprise, is that besides teaching you the actual techniques to get yourself out of harms way, the ASD Krav staff seem to pay special attention to preparing you mentally and physically to use what you have learned in class. Knowing what to do in a scary situation, and having the mental and physical ability to execute it don't always go hand-in-hand, but they do here and I love it! -

It started with a 2 week pass and I've been doing the 300 and combo fit classes since the beginning of the 2012. The workouts are intense, and the instructors are helpful and "coach" you to help push past your boundaries. The 300 circuit training classes are well thought out and setup, and the combo fit classes are continuously changing to provide new challenges for your body. Personally after not being too active for a few years this was the best way for me to get back into shape.
The gym is very clean, the staff and instructors are friendly. Collectively they foster an environment where everyone interacts well, and there isn't a lot of ego floating around. Which is way awesome.
I would recommend to try the 2 week trial to see if it's a good fit. I think it's the most effective 60 minute workout you can possibly hope for. -

ASD is amazing! The coaches are excellent and will help you through any challenges you may have. Krav Maga is an amazing self defense technique class and you will learn new things every class! I loved doing Krav Maga and the students are good and will help you through your " I don't know how" to phase. I now do CrossPit and it's super addicting! Everyday is different and they provide you with cards, so you can monitor your improvement. In just three months I have noticed an amazing difference in my body and mind! Pushing yourself to complete the workouts alone will build your confidence. The people in CrossPit are so nice and encouraging, so even on your days where you think you can not do anything, we will be there to push you on! This applies to any class at ASD though an amazing sense of team building and spirit. ASD also holds different seminars that are very beneficial. I have taken a few Woman's Self Defense classes here and have learned much! I just took the Jiujitsu seminar which was amazing,( I have never done ground fighting only watched), the instructors make it simple for you to understand even if it's your first time. This also applies to any class you may take here. Price wise, it's TOTALLY worth it, and much more interesting then your basic gym. I think everyone should at least sign up for the two pass and come check out ASD! There surely will be something you love!

The Pit
I have been a member of ASD for almost a year now and I have fallen in love with the place. A couple months ago I joined The Pit MMA classes. Being one of the less experienced members I was extremely nervous going into my first class. This feeling quickly vanished and I immediately felt like I was at home. Each class that I attend I learn a knew technique and I can always feel myself Improving. If you are looking to become a fighter or learn some self defense/fighting techniques this is a wonderful class to join. The instructors are absolutely wonderful they are extremely kind and skilled at what they do while knowing the perfect way of teaching it. The four most important things when going to the class are to listen to the instructor, be respectful of everyone in the class, give it your best effort and wear a cup if you are a male. The instructors DO NOT judge you on your physical capabilities. Frequently people will join an MMA class thinking they are there to "hurt people". THIS IS NOT THE CASE AT THE PIT. We are all there to learn and to stay healthy. While sparring people will not hit with %100 of their force, rather %30. Be sure to inform you sparring partner if you would like to go lighter than this and have an injury that you are trying to look out for. Your sparring partner will listen to you. I strongly suggest that if you are considering going to ASD you try a class at The Pit. They are fun, upbeat and range in intensity depending on what you want and what you are comfortable with. I hope that this review was helpful for you and once again I strongly suggest you give it a try. In no time you will gain confidence and intelligence in Mixed Martial Arts and you will become part of the wonderful Pit Ohana(family). -

Our whole family is now proud students of ASD since February 2012. My family and I have been very skepical about joining any gym or dojo because of the negative vibe about them. My husband looked up gyms on Yelp and saw ASD and the different types of classes that are offered. Being that our son is about to enter high school this up coming school year we wanted him to be a lot more confident in himself and be able to protect himself as well. I spoke with Ev and asked questions about the Krav Maga class for my son and if it would be a good idea. He never pressured us into signing up and allowed my son to take advantage of the 2 weeks free promo. My son was very nervous about taking the class as he was the youngest one in there; he fell in love with it on the first day and everyone welcomed him with open arms. Being that I have a heart condition I wasn't sure about joining ASD. After a couple of classes that we've taken our son to I saw the joy he was having and spoke with Ev again about joining myself even having my heart condition. Ev advised me that there's nothing better for the heart than exercise and told me that there's a current student with a pace maker. After Ev told me that my husband and I tried the 2 weeks free promo and have since joined ASD. There is no pressure from any of the instructors or senior students. It is at a go at your own pace atmosphere which I love. The instructors are genuinely wanting you to learn and improve your techniques; you're not just somebody in their class. I've already recommended several people to ASD who are now taking classes there.
We have never been happier in our decision to join ASD and their Krav Maga class. My son's and our confidence and skill level have definitely improved in the short time that we've been taking the class and it's all thanks to Ev, Woody, Daniele, and Edgar.
Highly recommend ASD to anyone!!!

I was kind of curious about Krav Maga and thought I'd check out ASD since they have the best Yelp reviews. I just wanted to try a couple of classes--and that was it.
Driving into the parking lot that first day and seeing ASD from the outside was scary- I almost drove back home! Looking at the rest of the people in the school, I thought... I am way out my league. I'm small and shy :-). I forced myself to walk in anyway, and I'm so glad I did.
Basically, the format of that class and every other Level 1 Krav class is this: The first half hour is conditioning.. lots of pushups, sit-ups, hitting bags, etc. The second half hour, you pair up with a student of your size to learn a Krav Maga technique (like getting out of choke-holds, headlocks, and sometimes advance techniques like disarming someone with a knife/gun.) The students here are really friendly. In all the months I've been here, I may have only encountered 3 people who could have been nicer.
ASD really emphasizes safety. In Level 1, you never directly hit each other. You're always hitting a bag that your partner is holding. I've never been injured in class- the most I've gotten was sore wrists (self-inflicted because I was using the wrong punching technique).
The instructors, Ev, Danielle, Mark, Woody and Edgar are so knowledgeable and welcoming. They teach through positive reinforcement and don't make you feel bad if you're not getting it. Even though sometimes the classes get big, they're always watching you and will come over to help you get your technique right. The head Krav instructor, Ev Pepper is one of the most inspiring teachers I've ever had- he turned something that I was only mildly interested in to something I now love. I feel really lucky to train with him and the rest of this expert team.
If you might be scared to try this, don't be at all- the fear wears off. Coming to that first Krav Maga class 7 months ago was the start of one of the best things I've done. I'm learning something every day that will make me safer, meeting super cool students, and about 3 times stronger than I've ever been. I can't recommend ASD enough! -

CROSSPIT!
What youll need: bag gloves (you can borrow some there if you like), workout clothes!, weight lifting gloves (optional. i use them for any kettlebell workouts or when we have to do pullups. gives me a better grip and i dont get calluses. calluses - no bueno.), shoes (most of the time you're on the mat barefoot but if we do sledgehammers youll want to put some sandals/shoes on).
I originally started out with one month of Krav Maga. it was AWESOME. As my end date of Krav Maga was coming up i realized: #1. i wanted to stay with this gym.. and #2 i needed to figure out what i was going to sign up for monthly. I work full time so i needed to find a class that fit my schedule. 2 people from my Krav Maga class (on 2 different occassions) mentioned they do Crosspit and dropped 10lbs! WHAAAAAAAT??? I had to try it. I actually never heard of it before and came on here to find reviews but didnt see any :(
I called before attending the 1pm class to get more information and Ralph answered. I told him that if we had to do box jumps i was out! they scare the crap out of me. He assured me that although box jumps is incorporated in some of the workouts - theres a modified version for everything. I ended up trying the class out and now... im addicted!
I go to the 1pm class (during my lunch break) Mon-Fri. Class is about an hour long. About 4-7 ppl show up. First 30 minutes is conditioning. Usually consists of bag work (punches, kicks, etc), sit-ups, sprawls, using the jump ropes, lunges/squats, etc. All at your own pace - this is nice bc theres no added pressure to compete with other individuals in the class. The idea is that you improve your OWN time and reps every time you attend. The last 30 min we work on the Crosspit workout for the day. This will change everyday - example: 20 walking lunges, 20 medicine ball squats, 20 medicine ball pushups, 20 hip thrusters...
Sounds crazy - but its do-able! If you don't know what the workout is - the instructors go over every workout with the class before you do it on your own.
I've gone to the 7pm class as well. Great mix of people and different fitness levels. Jeff teaches this class and he uses a lot of workouts within the first 30 minutes that involve core and balance. Also a great instructor - he pays good attention to each of the students, and hes also very motivating.
1pm class is usually taught by Ralph or Ali. Similar to Jeff - they both pay equal attention to the students in the class. They both give great advice on nutrition. Don't hesitate to let them know your fitness goals. In fact, i highly suggest you do so they can work with you on how to meet them!
During your first 2 weeks they gauge your fitness level. Both really work with you throughout the class and show you modifications if necessary. Since the class is small it feels like personal training! you'll meet some great people in this class - everyone is very supportive, and motivating. Youll meet some full time moms, dads, full time students, etc. thank goodness - a gym with no egos!
If you're looking to drop some lbs, tone-up and/or drop bodyfat % in time for the summer... try this class out! You'll see and feel a difference within 2 weeks. Oh and did i mention its AFFORDABLE!? $35 a month. SWEET!1 Previous Review: Show all »

I signed up for the 2-week free trial in June 2010 and tried the Krav Maga classes. Right after the trial ended I went on a European vacation. Once back in the US, I kept meaning to sign up, but didn't for more than a year. I never was pressured to sign up. No e-mails, no calls. Amazingly, when I finally returned, the teachers remembered me. I joined ASD in September 2011 and have been going 3-5 times a week ever since. The atmosphere is welcoming, friendly, and positive. The instructors are excellent. The workouts are intense, but varied, so you never get bored. By taking classes in Krav Maga I have gained strength, stamina, and confidence. My only regret is that I didn't sign up sooner!

Crosspit
I've been doing the Crosspit classes on and off since October and have very much enjoyed the challange and intensity they present. When I started, I met with Ralph, whom gave me a two week free pass to check out whatever classes I wanted. There was never any pressure to join and I was just encouraged to take my time with deciding what classes I wanted to take. In the end I decided on Crosspit class. Each class consists of an intense circuit that's done for time that usually revolved around jump rope work, box jumps, push ups, bag punches, sledge hammer swings, and so on. The instructors(Ali, Jeff, Ralph) are always friendly and approachable and will help you complete the days circuit work out. All the instructors here are very welcoming and you'll really feel like you're part of the gym. There's also MMA classes that I would love to try when I have more time. If you want to push your limits in a friendly encouraging environment, you should definitely try the Academy of Self Defense. -

Came to try this out free 2 weeks with a friend. Krav Maga instructor Ev Pepper is very friendly, humorous and knowledgable. During the cardio warm up portion he comes up to me and asks about myself. This is on the first day of a 2 week free trial! During those two weeks we learned how to defend against guns/bats/knives/chokes. They also come around and make sure that you are doing the drills correctly, even though it's a group class. Very practical and a good work out. I will definitely be returning for more classes.
The Pit MMA: This review may be incomplete as I only went for a day. The cardio portion was INTENSE. I consider myself pretty fit (couple half marathons and 1 full) but this thing had me struggling badly. Even during the submission lesson (taught by Ali and Jeff, both really chill people) I was dripping sweat onto my partner :P. I wanted to take MMA but unfortunately it conflicted with my work schedule.
This is a great place to gain confidence about yourself, defend against harm, and engage in fitness training. Highly recommended. -

After years on the couch and a ballooning waistline I decided to get back into shape. I've always wanted to take a martial art but never had the courage to walk in and sign up until now. I signed up for the two week trial online and showed up on a Monday evening at 7pm for a Krav Maga class in a pair of shorts and sneakers. 10 days into my 2 week trial, I was already hooked and signing up for the month-to-month.
Classes last roughly 60 minutes. Krav translates to "contact combat", but I like to call it bar room brawling 101. It teaches you to disable your opponent and get out of Dodge as quickly as possible, and it includes knives, multiple opponents, and every "cheap shot" you've ever seen in a street fight. That's not to say they're teaching you to fight dirty, but they do teach you to win and survive any kind of attack, which is the entire point of fighting.
For the first 30 minutes they wear you down... burpees (you'll have to see one to know what it is), pushups, situps, running, jumping, and anything else that gets the heart rate up and the blood flowing. At the end of the 30 minutes they gather the group, teach you a few moves, and then pair you up and let you practice. There is always at least one instructor giving you feedback and making sure you use proper form and intensity. If you come solo, they will always find you a partner, and they make a habit of switching the group around so you get to know everyone over time. At the 30 minute mark I usually feel like my heart is going to explode, and at the 60 minute mark I'm disappointed that the class is over.
Classes are co-ed, and there are people of all ages and sizes and fitness levels in each class. Advanced students will often attend the Level 1 classes and help the newer students practice their technique, which is like having extra instructors. Nobody gets hit in the face or intimidated and belittled, and the atmosphere is very positive and easy going. You may end up with a few scrapes or bruises on occasion from hitting a bag or blocking during practice, but I've yet to see anyone get injured or even injure themselves. Class sizes range from 8 to 30 depending on the day and time, and I've never seen anyone turned away because there were too many people or too few. It's an amazing workout, a chance to meet like-minded folks in our area, and you will definitely feel more confident after even one class. Oh, and you'll definitely get in shape!
I can't speak for the JCF classes other than as an observer, but I will say that the people who come and go from those classes are in great shape. I get tired just watching them while I'm getting ready for Krav class.
If you've thought about trying a martial art but can't find the motivation or make the commitment, just show up for one class. I guarantee you'll be hooked. The two week trial has no strings attached. Walk in, sign a waiver, pickup a trial membership, and take as many classes as you like for 2 straight weeks with no obligation. No crazy salesperson trying to talk you into a lengthy membership, and nothing but good people and a great workout. I like it so much I'm trying to talk my wife and daughters into signing up as well. -

First off, there's a *free* two-week trial you can pick up. You get access to any of the classes offered for a whole two weeks, at no charge to yourself, so you're free to see what classes you like best before you buy into anything.
Second, everyone here is friendly and helpful. After the two-week trial I went strictly into krav maga classes, so I can't speak in-depth on everything else, but my initial dealings were all positive.
I used to go to the gym 5 to 6 days a week, alternating strength training and cardio. Then I ditched gym for krav maga classes, and noticed much better results in a fraction of the time. In addition, I'm learning how to protect myself and others in real-life situations. I feel the best I ever have and always look forward to my krav maga nights! The monthly price is good too, and the experience will definitely last you a lifetime. -

There are not many places that teach you to think, act, and fight like a warrior. 100+ five star reviews says it all. This is simply the best fitness and defense training experience around. The facility is getting a little small for the overwhelming number of people that have poured into the school in the last couple of years, but it is wonderful to have such a diverse group of students.
I've been training in Krav Maga at ASD since 2009, on and off. The coaches make a point to train every student to their own skill level while encouraging each person to give their best. There is NEVER a harsh word, demeaning comment, or negative reinforcement. Simply put they know what you need, and they know how to get you there.
The head instructor, Ev Pepper, has been involved in Krav Maga and other martial arts for over 35 years, and it shows. His curriculum is confidence inspiring, and offers an unparalleled workout. It is impossible to find anyone better to teach you how to defend yourself and your family.
Not only does ASD offer 2 weeks of training for free when you first begin, but they also offer very reasonably priced training for your entire level progression. They are also quite accomodating if your financial situation changes and you have to take a break from training for a while.
Thank you ASD for changing my life..... forever. -

I have been coming to the Academy of Self Defense for 2 years now and it is absolutely the best school I have ever been too. The classes are simply amazing (The PIT, JCF, Muy Thai, Krav Maga) and more importantly, the people (Instructors, Students) are the best around!
The instructors know exactly what they are doing and are extremely patient if you are still trying to master a specific technique or routine. They have always taken the time out to educate me on topics ranging from Self Defense, Proper techniques in kicking/boxing, dieting/nutrition and how to maintain an overall healthy lifestyle.
One key element which keeps me going to ASD 5 nights out of the week (besides the amazing workout) are the students that attend the school. EVERYONE is polite, respectful, nice and friendly. I have made many new friends at ASD and we have go out after class for dinners and group outings a few times a month. ASD also has good 50/50 ratio of female/male students that attend so no one feels uncomfortable or left out.
They recently also expanded their school and now are offering nutritional supplements and gear at their ProShop. Never thought it would be beneficial to me until I sat down and talked to one of the instructors and realized what benefits I can get from taking some nutritional supplements such as Glutamine and Protein Shakes.
I recommend that everyone who wants to get in shape and improve their overall lifestyle (Mind, Body and Soul) to try out their two week free membership and take it from there...I am almost certain you will end up enrolling! -

2 weeks of any free classes to try out to commit before you sign up. They offer a morning class workout with Jivoni and several afternoon sessions of various Krav Maga and MMA classes as well.
We're morning people but wanted to check out what the after work classes looked like. We arrived around 6:30pm, filled out the waiver, and watched in the little entry room at all the students bustin' their @sses and working hard. Being the gym is in an industrial area, the "A/C" is pretty much the shipping/receiving door rolled up. So for a hot South Bay day of 100 degrees like it was, it was sweltering in there. Add about 25 some odd sweaty students, it was miserable. I looked over to the Canadian to see what he thought, and just watching from that little sauna-like room, he was dripping sweat. Morning class it is.
Monday, day 1: Morning class with Jivoni was great. We did some boxing, kicking, burpies, squats... and I feel wonderful and energized! Bring it on Monday!
Tuesday, day 2: Another great morning class with Jivoni. We did more boxing exercises and used sticks. My abs and thighs hurt from yesterday. My shoulders and rotator cuffs hurt from the unfamiliarity of punching and kicking. How many squats did we do? I dunno but I'm trying to figure out if I can learn to pee standing up.
Wednesday, day 3: Circuit training this morning with Jivoni was good. Various exercises that consisted of: rowing, hanging leg lifts, squats, picking up a heavy dummy-running across the gym and throwing it on the ground, flipping a mac truck tire outside and other various make-me-wanna-puke exercises. At least it's no longer 100 degrees outside, but I can't seem to get the smell of the loaner boxing gloves smell off my hands. Ick.
Thursday, day 4: Worked the punching bag during this morning's class with Jivoni. We did enough knee lift-skips to make me want to b*tch-slap all fond kid memories of ever doing so. I've never seen my shirt so sweaty in my life.
Friday, day 5:
The Canadian: "Do your legs feel like jelly?"
Me: "EVERYTHING feels like jelly."
Saturday, Day 6: 300 training this morning and my whole upper body has become sore. I can't snap my bra together. Sad.
Monday, Day 7: We did enough butt exercise (fire hydrants, leg kickouts, kickbacks, etc..) to make a grown woman cry. WAAAH! One day closer to buns of steel! I'd jump for joy but that would be using my butt muscles. Pass.
Tuesday, Day 8: Boxing sparring with a partner. Good thing she was patient. Mental note to self: Go get a mouthpiece. I'm starting to walk like a cowboy.
Tuesday Night - Krav Maga class drop in: Israeli self-defense class. Starts with 15 minutes of strenuous warm-ups (rolling around with a body bag and beating the sheyat out of it) followed by the remainder of the class learning technique. The technique portion of the class involved defending yourself if you were held up by a gun. Good thing the gun was plastic as I believe I shot myself once in the head and several times in the chest by accident. Oops.
Wednesday, Day 9: Double class yesterday has left me with the workout shakes. I can't cut fruit or lift my coffee cup without my grasp having a little bit of tremor to them. My knuckles are red and tender from last nights beating the bags during the Krav Maga class. Today's morning class was circuit. Who was the genius that installed those bicycles of death? 1 minute to stay over level 6 speed. I could barely get it over 4.5. Looking at my diminishing speed, Jivoni peers over my shoulder and screams "You're dying! You're dying! Pick it up!" Dude, I was dead half a circuit ago.
Thursday, Day 10: I'm convinced whoever says that burpies are your friend is the anti-Christ.
Wednesday, Day 12: The long independence day weekend was so good to us, we missed yesterday's morning class. Talk about regretting it. I felt every cocktail, chicken leg, corn dog, ribs and hamburger I ate all weekend. Those damn bicycles are gonna be the death of me.
Thursday, Day 13: Warm ups working the butt muscles today were rough: fire hydrants, forward circles, backward circles, cross overs, etc.... repeat. In rapid succesion. Painfully. I just hope no one walks by my cube while I'm massaging my booty 'cuz the Sensitivity Training I'll have to end up going to will cut into my workout time.
Jivoni's class will kick your @ss something proper. Not in a bad way, but in a tremendously great, not wasting your time way. He's a great teacher, offers good variety, and will keep you motivated with all his cool jams playing. The gym is great and clean. The people are nice and friendly and motivate you when you're on your last leg (literally).
We'll be signing up... but until then...

This place rocks!!!
I've been coming for about 8 months, taking mostly Krav Maga classes, and I can't say enough good things about this gym.
First off, it's a helluva workout and secondly the instructors are all total pros. They are super helpful and friendly. Not sure of a technique? Ask. Injured? Let them know and they'll make sure you don't aggravate it further. They will never make you feel dumb or physically inept. Everyone gets the same amount of attention, whether you're hardcore and hitting 8+ classes a week or a once every two week type of person.
I've gotten stronger, got some great workout tips to do at home, and feel like I can defend myself on the street. Hopefully, I never have to prove that last comment!
And if that's not enough of an endorsement, try it for FREE for 2 weeks. You will get hooked! -

Recently I joined the kickboxing class for a month; the instructor is awesome and after meeting some of the other teachers I have to say they are all very motivational and friendly! However, beware, the front desk lady at night is very rude! She rolled her eyes and gave me attitude after I needed my acct changed. I didn't know that if you had your fee taken directly out of your acct instead of paying each month you only pay $50 instead of $65, which she never told me and I found out after my friend told me. She has bad customer service and makes the establishment look bad. But thankfully I won't have to deal with her anymore.

I tried the two week free trial, and loved it. I like being challenged when I'm working out, and this was definitely -the- place to be put to the test.
I tried the 300 class, and at one point, sneaked outside to catch my breath and rest a bit... No resting here!! They found me and dragged me back in, no joke! :)
Everyone here seems to be in great shape, which is definitely encouraging. The instructors were very patient and cool, I will definitely consider signing up to be regular member. -

I rarely come across Fitness or Self Defense academies as good as these guys. The Academy of Self Defense is excellent!
Krav Maga, Muai Thai, MMA, JFC 300, and a Weapons & Tactics class reserved for local law enforcement. They all compliment each other if you decide to combine the martial arts. And the classes aren't out of reach financially either! A 2-weeks Free Trial? I doubt any other martial arts academy or gym will give you that kind of deal.
If you're looking to keep in shape, I recommend JCF 300 or the Pit at 1pm.
Then again, all of the classes will keep you fit! Those two are just more focused on getting you in shape. You can really set the bar with these classes. Very much like CrossFit, if you are a fan of that too.
If you're looking to learn how to protect yourself offensively and defensively, I would recommend Krav Maga, The Pit (7pm), or Muai Thai. These classes are taught with very knowledgeable / experienced instructors who get straight to the point and keep you on your toes. The overall group is pretty awesome!!
You'll be surprised what you can accomplish with their work outs!
Get to this place - it's the right stuff! -

Two Words - Amazing instructors
I started here on a two week trial, took most of the offered classes and realized very quickly that this place was addicting. I immediately joined and have nothing but praise for this place.
The students here are great and the environment is very relaxed. If you are on the fence I would recommend taking advantage of the trial offer. Make sure to take all classes to see what you like and what fits you best. Case in point, I started the trial thinking I wanted to do Muay Thai kick boxing and Krav but ended up liking the MMA program the best.
MMA instructors Ali, Ralph and James are very professional yet friendly. Training with them is great. They are approachable and will go above and beyond to help/guide you. -

I originally started ASD back in 2006, sometime when it was still "small" and was only that one portion of workout area. I did krav maga and absolutely loved it. The instructors, at that time, were fantastic. Ev is "field tested" and knows his stuff. He is a good instructor along with being motivating and pushes you to your limits.
After about a year with Krav, I somehow just stopped going. Life changes, career changes, and I just stopped going. It was like that relationship where you break up and you don't really know why you did.
Recently, I re-joined. They welcomed me back with open arms and boy am I surprised (not really) at how big the workout areas are now. They have expanded and have 3 designated areas for working out. They have a pro shop too. There are more instructors as well. I signed back up for krav with the JCF combo added. I, being a moron running on 3 hours of sleep, went to the wrong class on saturday and missed out on krav. But, luckily, with the instructors being so accommodating and wanting me to "at least get a workout in", let me try the Muay Thai class. It was A GREAT WORKOUT. i have bruised shins (I guess i'm not kicking the bag right, or the bag kicked my ass!) and my upper body is sore. I have not gotten a workout like that in a long time, and I consider myself in good shape. Jivoni is a great instructor as well, and pushes you to your limits and then some!
Overall, I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a cross training type gym or a fight class type workout. You can make up a bunch of excuses but it's your health, and it could be your life that is on the line. I travel all the way from Morgan Hill to workout here. It is great. Try the 2-week trial and I'm sure you will join. -

I only attended the Krav Maga classes, so I am speaking about them. This place rocks. The facility is nice and clean. The instructors are awsome. Fellow classmates are awsome. There is a good mixture of people training: Super tough and well not super tough. I highly recommend doing the 2 week trail. You'll be happy you did.
You really learn how to protect yourself and kick butt! -

I began ASD almost two years ago, shortly after having my 2nd child. ASD is NOTHING like regular group or kickboxing classes at regular gym's (Gold's/24 Hr). ASD's JCF and 300 blow the competition away! The best sweatiest workout ever! I instantly dropped weight and gained muscle. Coaches Woody and Jiovanni are excellent ; they push you to your limit!
All ASD staff is friendly and the facility is always clean (including the bathrooms!)
I've never taken any Krav or Muay Thai classes but from what I see, they kick butt too! So if your tired of the same boring routine at the gym, try ASD's 2 week membership--I'm yet to meet a person who wasn't impressed and didn't sign up after :) See Ralph, he'll take care of you!! -

Followup review. Place is still awesome. I've been here for over a year now and just love being here. It's become my second home. As with the other reviews down below, the instructors here are awesome and do care about their students. Regardless if they are first timers, brown belts or long time students, the instructors will be more than happy to show the proper techniques or answer any other questions that the student might have. I have upgraded my membership and look forward to attending other classes like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, etc.. Time permitting of course. As for results I have lost 22 lbs in 1 year. Although the numbers aren't off the charts, I feel a hell of a whole lot better.
P.S. Re: Recent Sunday visit review down below. Unfortunately that was a typo. The gym isn't open until 11 PM. I don't have any kids, but I notice the kids programs have quite a few kids and they seem to have a good time. And no I'm not a member of management, just a student.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I have been training with ASD since 2005 and there is NOTHING like it. Each workout is rigorous, group-oriented and fun. I have never been successful with mega gyms or personal training - I find them boring and uninviting. But when you visit ASD, you actually join a community of people who motivate you to stay on track. With the awesome music selection they have - complemented by their spectacular coaches - you could never fail in such an environment.

Review from Edison T.
ASD has changed my life. This past summer I stepped on my WiiFit balance board and it called me obese. I was horrified that this little video game called me that. I didn't exercise at all for a few years prior to this incident with the Wii so I slowly started to get into physical activities.
After 4 months of bicycling everyday and playing WiiFit very intensely for hours at a time, I managed to lose about 20 lbs. That's when I knew I had to step up my game if I wanted more results. A friend of mine went to ASD and so I decided to stop by and do the two week trial.
After the 2 week trial I managed to lose 8 lbs! I took about 2 classes at a time each time I went. I was nervous at first because there were a lot of people who were in great shape and knew how to kick ass. But the environment here is so welcoming, everyone is willing to help out the new people and show them the correct techniques. The Muay Thai class is such a great workout, it's all about controlled aggression. The BJJ class covers each technique in such great detail. The 300 program is just an absolute total body workout. JCF really helps you tone your body and get your conditioning up for all the other classes.
It's now been 9 months since I've been going to ASD on a regular basis. I've lost a total of close to 60 lbs. Besides drastic change in physical apprearance, I also feel great and energized everyday.
I love the staff here from all the Coaches to all the staff members, it's really like a close knit family. Don't you want to go to a place where everybody knows your name? Sometimes I feel like I just live at this place and I wouldn't have it any other way. -

I've never been a gym enthusiast. I was pretty content with doing my own form of crossfit at home and throwing in a jog or two on a weekend. When my husband approached me about ASD and taking a Krav class with him I was a bit resistant but decided to give in. The first Krav class we took, I thought we were in pretty good shape but boy did it kick our butts! The first 30 minute workout is quite intense and the self defense is equally the same. I knew after the class was over we were both hooked. I felt totally comfortable there. Everyone is eager to help you out and the instructors are amazing. Not to mention, if you like to work out to cool tunes like Linkin Park or even Jimmy Hendrix, then this is the place for you! If there was a 100 star rating, I would definitely give it to ASD! I am so glad we joined and am looking forward to many more butt kicking workouts and self defense techniques.

Asd is a solid school,I'm taking the Krav class and learning alot of new skills, the staff is friendly and the prices are great,I did my 2 week free trial and have now sighned up.I wake up looking forward to training in the morning.this sure beats the gym,it's like having a personal trainer but your not even paying close to what you would pay at a regular gym,6 weeks in and I've lost 16 pounds plus the skills I'm learning r priceless.I like the fact that their is know ego at this place and their is a good vibe between all of students and teachers,I've been to other schools and got the vibe that if your not trying to be on their fight team your just another number,it's not like that here @ all,the coaches at ASD seem to actually care about the students,if I could I would give ASD 10 stars!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Everest Pepper you're a amazing coach...... -
Review from Amanda G.
My guy and I have been looking for a new way to shake up our workouts, and after reading about this place, we decided to take advantage of their free trial.
We went to several Krav Maga classes, a few JCF classes, and one Muay Thai kickboxing class.
Everyone we met there, both employees and people working out were incredibly nice, and very helpful.
I work out daily, but am not really much of a class kind of person,.Although, this place changed my mind a bit. There is no cliquishness, no attitude, none of that kind of behavior that can occur in similar settings.
I enjoyed the Krav classes, but I would not go to them for my main cardio workout. Some classes had more cardio activity than others, some were more instructional. I was a little disappointed, since i was expecting something different.
If your primary objective is getting a kick ass workout, this is not the class for it. If you're looking for an interesting self defense class, with some cardio mixed in, this is perfect.
I also think these classes are very useful, (especially for women) it's good to be able to learn to defend yourself if you have to.
I liked the JCF classes too, but those seemed to fill up the quickest. On one occasion we couldn't even get in. We were told that Monday evenings are the busiest, so if you want to try the JCF class, go on a different night. I liked the variety of exercise that was done in those classes. Kicking, punching, kneeing, crunches, etc. You get to do a bunch of different stuff, which makes the time fly by.
The Muay Thai class was fun, but for me, (i have some knee problems) it wasn't ideal.
All in all, I think this place rocks. I'm not sure if this is where we'll end up joining, but I'd recommend it to anyone. I was really impressed by how friendly everyone was, and how patient they were, (especially in teaching me some of the boxing combos, I'm not the most coordinated person.) -

This place is my addiction. There is nothing else in this world that will get me on the road by 6:20AM to get to my 7AM combat fit class with Jivoni. I sometimes dream about him shouting, "Don't touch my tape!" (part of the '300' boot camp class...you'll see)
I started a year ago to kick the crap out of anything after my boyfriend broke up with me, and although it's been a long time since I've imagined his face on the bags, it's still the most motivating workout EVER.
Not to mention I've lost 4% body fat, gained pounds of muscle, stronger bones, etc.
BTW, the women who take these classes ROCK...you'll consistently see more women heading in for the pain than the men. This includes punch combos, kicks, weights, pushups, pullups, obstacle courses..you name it. Nothing will bug you for the rest of the day..seriously. I finally built up the nerve to take Krav Maga after a year of the combat fit, so I'll write back and let you know.
And if you do show up for class after reading this, ask for 'Jersey'...that's what Jivoni calls me. -

If you DONT want to be HOOKED on ASD....I recommend NOT to do the 2 week trials.....After the first 2 classes...i was hooked! JCF combo and 300 was AWESOME. I was sweating like a man, and I hated waking up in the morning for their classes, but it was worth it. I even changed my schedule at work so I can go to their morning classes! After the 2 week trial, I ended up signing up for their JCF classes...Unfortunately I sprained my ankle a week after (not at JCF), that I had to put my membership on hold and havent been able to return since. I hope my ankle heals soon, so I can get back into the ASD ways! Oh how I miss those blurpees!

I took the Womens Self Defense Seminar at ASD this past weekend. The information, instruction, and training I recieved in just one seminar will last me a life time. The instructors were phenomenal, and the skills they taught me were so easy to understand, and simple to remember that I know I won't forget them. This seminar was a perfect combination of instruction, technique, demonstration, and practice. The only thing I regret is that I didn't invite more friends to attend, and that I personally waited so long to sign up. I have been telling all my girlfriends about this class, and plan on taking their next seminar on rape prevention in August.
I can't stress enough how this class changed my view and awareness of my surroundings. I am the biggest skeptic when it comes to "being attacked' I always believed that if I was in an "affluent" area that I was safe. I have now learned how wrong and misinformed I was. If any female is looking to learn life long skills on how to protect herself, her children, and family, I recommend this class. If there is one self defense class that you take in your entire life to protect yourself, I recommend it be this one!
ASD has done a fantastic job and a great service to our community in offering this class. Everett and the other instructors make the class entertaining and informative. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! All of you were amazing, and I hope this review brings women into the seminar because NO WOMAN deserves to be put in a situation where she feels scared, or abused!! -

I have been going to ASD for a few years off and on. I have to say that No matter how much weight you bench press, curl or how many miles you run, you will never be ready for a JCF kickboxing class until you go and get your butt kicked by the master, coach Jivoni and you sit there wanting to throw up cause you lost it for not going for 10 months.
Coach Jivoni has trained many great fighters around the world and was Cung Le's personal trainer. He knows his stuff, you don't need to come into his JCF class knowing how to fight or know the combo's. He class is a cardio class that will help you lose weight and feel great but if you do want to be a fighter ASD offers you a ton of different class. None that I can speak of since I only go for the cardio.
BTW Monday classes are bad at all anymore since they added 2 JCF classes. One at 4 pm and one at 6 pm.
Hit them up for 2 week free passes. Promise you that you will like the class. Get your body in shape for the summer and help you in the long run.
