Review from Richie P.
Berkeley, CA
I was at Hilton Waikoloa Village for a conference, and I wanted to get a haircut before I gave my presentation.
I found Michelle on Yelp and gave her a call. She said she closed at 5 and I told her I was headed over. We got lost on the way so by the time we got there it was already close to 5. I called her and she had already closed for the day, but she came back to give me my haircut anyways.
She gave me a good haircut for $20, and most importantly, my girlfriend approved. It was a little shorter than I intended but it came out quite nice and I looked sharp for my presentation :-).
She also told me about a great snorkeling location: the Place of Refuge which is south of Kona. Very beautiful coral. -
Review from K F.

I would give Michelle -0- stars for standing me up for a hair appointment, but, I raised the review overall by two stars for the excellent pedicure I received from one of her employees.
My family lives in Waikoloa Village and one of the stylists at Absolute, Francine, used to visit my father in his home when he was wheelchair bound, to give him mobile hair cutting service. So, we were familiar with Absolute when it had a previous owner and name.
When my sister and I arrived to visit our family, we stopped in for lunch in the village center and then popped in to see if there was time for pedicures. Owner Michelle's employee (who name I have forgotten, I'm sorry) was available and gave me and my sister each an excellent pedicure. She was pleasant, very thorough, and the pedicure was reasonably priced. Excellent foot and leg massage, as she's a former massage therapist and it shows. I'd give her 5 stars on her own but the overall experience was tainted by what I consider to be severe mismanagement by the owner.
First, you don't come over and "train" your employees on cash register and booking issues when they are in the middle of a leg massage for a pedicure, distracting them from the task at hand. Owner Michelle interrupted our gal at least 4 times to chide her for not keying in things properly on the register / reservations system. It's important, I know, to get it right for commissions and such, but keep your business to yourselves, and don't interrupt your employees during paid services to chat them up concerning data processing issues. Repeatedly. It's awkward for us and embarrassing for the employee. The training session could have waited 30 minutes when she was finished.
Second, if you have an appointment with a customer -- keep it. Salon owners don't like it when clients arrive late or don't show up at all, and they often have policies in effect to charge a client's card if an appointment is missed. Well, my time is just as valuable as the spa and salon owner, I assure you.
After paying for two pedicures at the salon, I booked a return appointment the very next morning with owner Michelle, for a haircut. My appointment was 10:00 a.m. I arrived 15 minutes early, as per good salon etiquette, so she could chat with me, look at the photo of my haircut, etc. I sat and read a magazine. And waited. And waited. Another employee said a few times "she'll probably be here soon" but no one really said what the problem was. Did she forget? Is she on her way? What's going on? She'll "probably" be here soon? That's not good enough.
At 10:15 a.m. I'd been waiting exactly 30 minutes and owner Michelle was now very late for our appointment. I had an afternoon meeting to attend which is why I wanted the haircut in the morning. At 10:20 I got up and waited outside the salon, looking to see if she was even in the area. At 10:25 I'd been waiting 40 minutes total (25 of them past my appointment time). No one noticed I was getting irritated, was overlooked, or volunteered any explanation at all for the owner blowing me off.
Bad form, no matter how you look at it. What the owner may have thought was just a vacationer who didn't matter, wasn't the case at all. My family has used this salon and has used one of the stylists in the past, and was paying for 3 services in two days.
So, the following day I toured the Kohala Spa Salon at Hilton Waikiloa Village and I guarantee you, I'll be going there for my haircuts, as will my family, in the future. Higher price, but they don't stand you up. They also offer yearly memberships for access to the spa, salon, and aquatic facilities, including a special rate with a local ID.
It's a pity her good pedicurist won't get my entire family's business, now.
