Our concierge at the Courtyard by Marriott Historic District recommended a private tour that would knock our socks off to a beach that is only accessible at low tide and gets us as close was one can get on land to the historic Morris Island lighthouse.

We met Gresh, the operator, at a dock outside of Charleston and he took us by motorboat through estuaries that were lined with live oyster beds and teeming with wildlife like brown pelicans and other birds.  We actually saw a pod of bottle nosed dolphins playing near the boat!  Spectacular.  Gresh anchored off of the beach, which was prominently featured in the movie "Glory" as the battle site at which over 1000 black Union troops perished (and are buried there!).

My kids and I walked the entire beach without encountering another soul on a brilliantly sunny and beautiful afternoon.  We found lots of pretty shells and sand dollars to take home.

Gresh was great - his family has been there for generations, he clearly loves the area and cares deeply for its environmental integrity and is a terrific tour guide.  Do not miss this experience - we will remember it for the rest of our lives.  It went all too quickly!

We took a 2 hr tour with this Charter back in May (2011),  Hands down finest boat tour we've been on.  I'd echo everything Nikki K said in her review.  Gresh (6th or 7th generation local?) made the tour - he and his son were fantastic guides, and my family (and my folks - 6 total) had a memorable evening tour.

Trust me - If you want to really experience the intercoastal waterway, the ecosystems, the dolphins, the secluded beaches, Do not do a large tour on some big boat.  do a small intimate one like Gresh's.  yeah, you'll pay a little more, but it's well worth it.  We stay on Kiawah when we visit, and this is exactly what we've been looking for for a number of years.  we kind of got lucky and stumbled upon it.  We'll likely do same tour when we return next yr.

By far, one of the most meamorable experiences of my life.  The concierge of the Holiday Inn Historic District in downtown Charleston, SC essentially explained that booking this private boat charter out to the Morris Island Lighthouse would be one the most romantic and serene boating experiences of our lives - and he was right.  I can't even imagine what our trip to Charleston would have been like without this boat trip... great I'm sure, but certainly not as memorable.

Essentially Capt. Gresh Meggett is a local boater, fisherman, and knowledgeable ecologist that does private boat charters on his boat to the Morris Island Lighthouse.  But what is so spectacular isn't just the lighthouse itself, it's your journey there and back.  The tour is private, so it's just you (and occasionally his son) and Capt. Gresh.  He explained to us the in's and out's of the marshland around Folly Beach and a lot of the eco system.  He was so smart and knowledgeable.  He taught us how to catch shrimp and we caught some! It was so cool! We saw oyster beds... dolphins, sting rays, flounder beds, fish of various types, horseshoe crabs, blue crab...  we found sanddollars, some of the most beautiful shells I've ever seen.  It was a chance of a life time.  He knows so much regarding the history of the civil war and what specifically went on along that coastline and that area.  It was fabulous.  I can't even begin to imagine how much fun kids would have.  The best part is, he was the first one to start these charters out to Morris Island!  So he's the true go-getter regarding this type of tour.   He gets you there early so the shelling is at its prime and the tide is at the perfect location.  He tells you about the history, snaps a few great pictures, and then you are off - you have the entire island to yourselves.

SO ROMANTIC, right?!  How can you possibly visit Charleston, SC without this trip!  I can't recommend this enough adults, couples, families, kids... it's perfect for EVERYONE.  I believe he also does fishing charters and sunset cruises.  The highlight of our trip.
