Review from Shasta L.
I always go out of my way to avoid swimming and other water-related activities. My parents set me up for COMPLETE AND UTTER FAILURE in life because they never enrolled me in swimming lessons, and they refused to let me play in swimming pools as a kid. I'm not even joking - if there was a pool at my friend's house, I was NOT going to that birthday party.
Crazy parents aside, I have learned how to swim as an adult. Kind of. Well, it's more like a mixture of sinking and struggling for my life, so that has to count for something. Anyway, I always feel invincible in a life jacket, so I was pumped that this rafting adventure in the Big Sky Country was going to be a safe one!
This wasn't "white water rafting" per se as we didn't have helmets, and it was the last day of the season (read: lowest and slowest amount of water in the river), but we hit some pretty cool waves and currents along our scenic route on the Absarokee River. It was about 3.5 hours of beautiful scenery, energetic paddling, and quirky pieces of information from the guide.
Our guide was named Chris, and he, along with the other guides, proved to be very good-natured and very well-trained in his job. I trusted him with my life, so when he asked me to sit out on the front of the raft with my legs hanging out, I didn't second-guess him because that's not crazy, right? OK, maybe a little. Chris informed us we were about to hit a new wave that they named "The Wall of Water."
"Wall of WTF?!" more like because I was swept under the raft and was spit out 50 yards away from everyone in less than 5 seconds. The current was so strong and my life jacket so tight that I really didn't need to swim: I was floating and moving without any effort! I'm not one to freak out or panic, so I just bade my time until I was rescued. Chris popped me and the overboard members of our rafting party like we were made of cotton candy, and he was even nice enough to offer me his dry t-shirt because that river water was DAMN COLD.
So, if you're in the Billings area during the summer, and you don't mind a little drive and a beautiful trip along the river, then head out to ARA! No swimming skills necessary. All you'll need to do is trust your guide and their swift water training! -

Went here today with my wife. I am fairly confident that this is the most fun I have ever had on the water. Most of the time it was pretty chill (this was the last day of the season) and there was a lot of nature to be spied. There were a couple of real awesome spots that the whole raft got wet, and the crew I was rolling with was pretty tight so we had a lot of fun. The last heavy rapid that we hit rocked our worlds. Five people were on the raft when it went under and myself and the guide were the only ones still there there when it came back up. The guide Chris was a true professional and kept his cool the entire time as the two of us were stuck in the rapid for almost five minutes. I can't wait until next season, and the rapids are bigger for a round two. I hope I fall out the raft next time my wife can't have all the fun.
